Victoria Beckham ‘wants an empire,’ considers herself American minded

Victoria Beckham

The New York Times profiled Victoria Beckham for its T-magazine offshoot, and the results are mildly surprising. The photoshoot, such as it is, is made up of two laid-back photos of Victoria working from home. Of course, the journo freely admits to watching the entire (highly strategic) setup of the Coke and Pepsi cans in the background but says Victoria cheekily resisted putting grapes in the “office” photo by saying, “We don’t want anyone to know I eat. Why ruin that?” She has such a wicked sense of humor.

What struck me most about the interview is that the NYT reporter initially mistook Victoria, who was wearing jeans, a t-shirt, no shoes, and a messy ponytail, for a nanny because she looked so relaxed and was playing with Harper. Little Harper was around for most of the interview until Victoria put her down for a nap. What follows is a rather endearing talk with the former Posh Spice about her work, David, and her children:

Victoria Beckham

Her unyielding ambition: “I want to reach as many women throughout the world as I can. There are more categories that I want to enter into. I have five categories at the moment. But at some point I would love to do shoes, I would love to do fragrance, I would love to do makeup, I would like to do underwear. There are so many things I want to do. I want to get bigger and bigger. I absolutely want an empire.”

She already misses Los Angeles: “I am very career minded, and I think my personality is more suited to America. I am a working mum.”

David does the cooking? “Yes, he’s really good.” When David was playing soccer in Italy a few years ago, she explained, the family was living in L.A., and he was left alone on his days off. “So he decided to go to culinary school.”

The kids are (relatively) normal: “We have what I consider to be normal birthday parties. I’ve been to parties in L.A. that are mind-blowing. I mean, quite literally mind-blowing. People get cellphones in the party bag, that sort of thing. Fabulous, fabulous parties. Ours aren’t like that. They are normal kids’ parties. We’ll have a bouncy castle, a face painter.”

She wants to look natural in magazines: “Normally in a fashion shoot you’d be plastered in makeup, in amazing clothes. I find it embarrassing when you don’t look like yourself, when you’ve had tons of retouching. I don’t want to be made to look like I’m 25. I’m 39. I don’t have any issues with my age.”

Why doesn’t she smile more often? “I dunno. I smile in family pictures. When you’re in a position to be paparazzi-ed just walking down the street, you’d look a little daft if you were smiling all the time.” (Apparently, the eternally sunny-seeming Kate Middleton never got that particular memo).

On brand Beckham “You know, we don’t look at it as a big brand. It is, but it happened very, very naturally. It seems that now everybody wants to make a brand; everybody wants to build a brand. Ours happened very organically. The most important thing is each other and the children.”

Why she became a designer: “I just wanted to create beautiful clothes, good quality clothes I wanted to wear myself. And then I wanted to create handbags, because I couldn’t find the right handbag that I wanted to carry. Then I couldn’t find the right sunglasses, so I decided to make my own sunglasses.”

[From NYT T magazine]

Victoria really has come a long way, baby. I remember years ago when she had massive boob implants, dressed like a total chav, and fit right in with the soccer WAGs. Back then, there were even rumors that a lot of designers were offended that she’d wear their clothing in public, but there was nothing that they could do about it since she purchased the clothing. Of course, that could have just been some really mean and untrue gossip, but whatever the case, Victoria has had the last laugh.

Here’s some proof that Victoria really is hands-on with her kids. She’s got all four of them minding their manners at LAX in early June in these photos. Sure, Victoria looks utterly ridiculous walking around in platform sandals while carrying little Harper, but otherwise, she’s a pretty normal mom. Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz obviously adore her, and they all seem like really good kids.

    Once upon a time fashion design required a bona fide qualification. Now any famous non talented celebrity or ‘wag’ considers themselves to be the next Lagerfeld.

    • Nicole says:

      No. All that has ever been required is that people buy your clothes.

      • moon says:

        No, designers actually had to study and learn the art of how to make a garment. There’s a reason people go to fashion school and a fashion degree takes 3-4 years. These celebrities aren’t real designers, they’re just famous names who hire real designers to do the work for them.

  2. Anna says:

    She is lovelier with each interview. I like her sense of humor.

    • LadyMTL says:

      I like her sense of humor too (I still remember that Coming to LA special that she did, she was really funny) and I think she’s a lot smarter than people give her credit for. I’m not a huge fan of her fashion – I find she tends to imitate a lot of other designers – but she knows how to market herself.

      And random aside: the reporter mistook her for the nanny? Suuuuuuuure.

    • RocketMerry says:

      +1!
      She’s lovely.

    • Meaghan says:

      Love her sense of humour, that she makes fun of herself and LOVE that outfit so much! Especially the skirt

      • nc_magnolia says:

        Honestly, Bedhead’s description of “chav” and WAG were definitely part of who Posh used to be. And still is, to a large extent.

        But the thing is, she doesn’t try to cover up her blue collar beginnings. I think she found an artistic outlet she loved, where she felt she could truly express herself. God bless her that she could finance her passion, many women can’t afford to bring their dreams to fruition. But she did, she seems to keep it all in perspective and also seems like an awfully good mum. Kudos to her as well for snarking on over-the-top “Hollywood kid” birthday fetes. They do that in my neck of the McMansion woods too, and it is utterly obnoxious.

    You know, back in the spice girl days, I always thought Ginger spice would be the one to take over the world. She seemed more motivated and famehungry than all the others put together.

    And she wasn’t shy about coming forward, but then again they say it’s the quiet ones at the back one needs to watch!

    On a different note, in all the recent pap pics of the family, i’ve started to notice that Brooklyn is looking out for everyone else, almost as though he is the parent….

    • Anna says:

      That’s true, Ginge was more front and center of the group.

    • Bridget says:

      I would imagine that as the oldest child of 4 in a family where their dad was away a lot, he’s probably feels a lot of responsibility to watch out for the others (and even his mom). Part firstborn, part man of the house. They’re famous for being a pretty tight knit family.

  4. Stef Leppard says:

    I’ve started to like her so much recently. She seems like a good mom and she has a sense of humor (who knew?)

    • carol says:

      yah there’s something about her that I can’t put my finger on – one of the only celebs that I actually like

  5. manuela says:

    zero designer and skinny doll. livse in her own world and thinks she deserves more attention. whole life aka reality show. but of course she dlike act like normal people do.

  6. LaurieH says:

    I have to say, Victoria Beckham’s clothes are really chic and classic. Her dresses are fantastic. I am not as keen on the bags and sunglasses, though. Her designs are heads and shoulders above other “celebrity” designers, including stylist Rachel Zoe – likely because she uses high-end retailers and avoided the usual route of putting her stuff in low and mid market stores (think Simpson, Lopez, Lauren, Kardashian, etc…) That said, Victoria’s prices are high. She said she wants to reach as many women in the world that she can, but with her prices, she’s limiting that. That said, lowering her prices would cheapen her brand, so maybe it’s for the best. I hope she doesn’t do fragrances. I have a complete aversion to tacky celebrity fragrances. It screams drugstore crap to me. Another aversion? When high-end designers do “special” lines for places like Target. It hurts their brand, IMHO, and the stuff always looks cheap and sweatshop-made to me. I don’t think Isaac Mizrahi will ever recover.

    • bluecalling says:

      read somewhere that she sort of copies another (I guess less known) designer’s fashion… which is not surprising… and enough of them do it.

      she has a good eye for clothes she likes… most people with the money and time will, with experience, have the same. i applaud her for taking what she was given and doing more with it but that is about it. she is not a designer, clothing mogul or some great artist.

    • LAK says:

      Her clothing isn’t friendly to those with curves, and I don’t mean fat.

      Her sizing is one size smaller if you are straight up and down and 2 sizes smaller if you have curves.

      Asthetically it may look good, and if you find the right size amazing, but she’s not catering to regular sized people despite her saying that she is.

      She is very popular in the far east for the simple reason that their figures and sizing is ideal for her clothes. Not so much on this side of the world unless you have the same body type and size.

    • Hautie says:

      ” I don’t think Isaac Mizrahi will ever recover…”
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Isaac Mizrahi was broke broke broke.
      And Target gave him what he needed. Cash.
      So the question is, do you want to be broke and live on past success. That pays you no money.
      Or do a cute sensible clothes line for Target. Which was a huge hit.
      And it lead to him getting to move back into Macy’s crowd again. (Didn’t he move to Liz Claiborne?)
      I have never understood the snobby attitude about the clothes game.
      The Olsen twins made a friggin fortune from their WalMart kids clothes.
      Jessica Simpson is making a killing selling her line.
      Seriously, I have been waiting for Goop herself to start a sensible clothes line. Simply because it will make a ton of cash. And Goop loves the cash!
    • nc_magnolia says:
      LaurieH, thoroughly and totally cosign.
      Beautifully said; I can add no more.
  7. Shy says:
    I love them all. Too bad her reality show was cancel. I wanted to watch them. She has a wicket sense of humor.
  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:
    I have a crush on this whole family. David went to culinary school….yum!
  9. Jennifer12 says:
    I like her; she has a good sense of humor and doesn’t take herself seriously. She has a good sense of fashion as well; the outfit in the top picture is sleek, beautiful and casual. She keeps herself way too thin, but other than that, she has a good attitude about aging and a great business sense.
    • Jennifer12 says:
      Plus, I love what a hands on parent she is.
    • LAK says:
      Her business sense is actually Simon Fuller. He masterminded the spice girls rise and American idol (inadvertently also bringing us Simon Cowell).
      The Spice girls floundered and eventually lost all ground when they sacked Simon because they thought they could either manage themselves or get a better manager.
      VB brought back Simon Fuller as her own manager, ditto persuading David to sign with him for his commercial work, and the rest is history.
      He has the midas touch. Like Benny Medina or Larry Rudolph.
      Her business sense is having the good sense to listen to her manager. Just like JLO always listens to Benny (except on her love life), and Miley is listening to Larry.
      • Gia says:
        This. She hires the right people and does what she’s told. There’s very little difference between her and all the other famewhores who pump out ‘lines’ (dress line, shoe line, perfume line). She strikes me as an incredible inauthentic, try hard. I mean her family is lovely and all, but don’t look for applause and praise from me because you take care of your kids.
  10. G says:
    I love her outfit, her interview, and respect her work, but let’s face it the woman is OCD probably about everything. If that was my mom I’d have a complex!
    • Sisi says:
      Actually David is the one with OCD
    • Brittney says:
      Disclaimer: I’m nitpicking, but I try to correct this every time I see it, because it can really hurt if you drop this phrase in casual conversation with the wrong person.
      One cannot be OCD “about” anything. One can’t even “be” OCD. I know it seems harmless to you, but OCD is a very real (and often very debilitating) disorder, and you either have it or you don’t.
      Every time a co-worker or friend or acquaintance says “I’m so OCD about washing my hands”, I have flashbacks to hiding my rubbed-raw, bleeding hands from my kindergarten classmates. It’s not casual, it’s not an adjective, it’s not synonymous with a desire to keep things clean and orderly. It’s a disorder that can take over your entire life, and when you spell out the acronym, it doesn’t even make sense in this context.
      /rant over, carry on!
  11. KinChicago says:
    That skirt she is wearing? I LOVE it and want it… Does anyone know where to buy it? Please and Thank You?
  12. Shelley says:
    I absolutely love Victoria. Her clothes are so well fitting and classy, and she is really respected by the fashion industry.
  13. Christina says:
    Love Victoria! She and her whole family are one class act. Cannot wait to see more of her designs in the future…
  14. Bird says:
    I love her. She seems to be a great mom and is funny as hell. She could be sitting around getting her nails done, but she busts her butt.
  15. Feebee says:
    I like her. She seems to keep a sense of humor about the crazier aspects of her life. I know it’s impossible to actually quantify but from the looks of her kids and their behaviour she’s an awesome mum.
    I don’t see a nanny in the pic at the airport. I guess Brooklyn helps keep things in line? Or is that the arm of one reaching for Cruz(?) in the last photo?
  16. Ginger says:
    I’m going to say it again…David and Victoria are wealthy as all get out and super famous but are actually really nice and genuine. Their kids are well behaved and all of them gorgeous. I love to see LA Galaxy games (I’m a big fan) and while David was playing on the team I would see Victoria and the children at the stadium supporting David. Even when David was injured he would come to the games with the children to root for his team. They certainly didn’t seem to be getting any special treatment and in turn, treated the fans very kindly.
  17. Ginger says:
    I love her too. I love her style, her sense of humor. I’d love to own her clothes because I think she has great taste, unfortunately her stuff is way out of my budget. I probably wouldn’t fit into any of them either.
    I was also hoping she would have done more specials. The coming to LA was great.
  18. Kara says:
    Doesn’t she have a his&hers cologne & perfume thing w David? I coulda sworn they did…his was in a brown bottle & hers was pink or something?…
    & when David was *alone* when her & the kids were in LA was this his “wandering-to-his-personal-assistant” dong days?
  19. Happy21 says:
    And an empire you shall have!
    I don’t know when or how but somewhere along the way over the last couple of years I’ve come to adore her!
  20. gogoGorilla says:
    I really like VB a lot. She seems really down to earth and hands-on with her kids. Plus, her husband is pretty hot, especially when he doesn’t speak. o.0
    And since I would rather see more posts about her than some of the other icky celebrities who keep gracing these pages, I thought I would post here to boost the comment count.
  21. babythestarsshinebrite says:
    Yay! Harper!
  22. Baskingshark says:
    While I would agree that the US mindset is far more geared toward aiming for success and one of the Brits’ many bad qualities is their tendency to try and shoot down anyone who tries to do anything different or is ambitious, I suspect the main reason Vicky prefers America is because people in the UK still for the most part refuse to fall under her spell. Largely this is because everyone still remembers her absolutely desperate famewhoring in the immediate aftermath of the demise of the Spice Girls when her attempts at TV presenting and becoming a self-proclaimed hip-hop queen failed spectacularly.
    I personally would warm to the woman far more – and take her side in this – if I thought she could actually DO anything and had earned the fame off the back of talent, rather than thanks to Simon Fuller’s marketing skills. And if she would stop trying to whore her children out, not to mention her rapidly-ageing husband and his increasingly embarrassing attempts at underwear modelling.
    As is, I will believe she designs or has a hand in designing a single one of those outfits when I see her get locked in a windowless room with no communication devices, a box of pencils and a piece of paper and she comes out with something that vaguely resembles a drawing of a dress. And not one that a 5-year-old drew for their parents’ refrigerator!
    • Vesta says:
      You made many good points. I haven’t either seen any major talent yet. I don’t know how much she actually does herself, but it doesn’t even matter to me since I think her clothes feel pushed, stiff and copied from somewhere else.
      She gets praise because of her (allegedly) nice personality – I just don’t see what that has to do with her skills as a designer? For example John Galliano may not be the easiest persona, but he sure is an exceptional creative designer.
  23. Angie says:
    I genuinely like her. I think she has a big and long career, and she clearly wants to make it primarily in the states; has for some time, now. I think that will work well for her.
  24. Lizzy1013 says:
    Need that cute leather jacket for fall!!! Designer ID any one?
  25. Laura says:
    I absolutely adore Victoria! She seems like a great mum, wife and overall good person. Her clothes are pretty and her personal style is amazing as well, she is one of my favourite celebrities, I hope she achieves whatever she desires.
