People: Monica Bellucci & Vincent Cassel separate ‘by mutual agreement’

Monica Bellucci Vincent Cassel

On Monday, we brought you a slightly sketchy story (via a Brazilian newspaper) about Monica Belluci and Vincent Cassel supposedly separating after 14 years of marriage. In the report, we heard about how Monica had enough of whatever Vincent was doling out and had left their Rio mansion to return France with the couple’s two daughters. At the time, I wondered aloud whether Monica had finally decided that a fidelity-free marriage was not something that she wanted to live with forever.

Now I have another (more juvenile) theory. Since news broke via People (the source among sources when it comes to publicist-friendly celebrity gossip), our photo agencies have swiftly set about bringing older, archived pictures of Monica and Vincent to the forefront. Check out this side-eye that Monica is giving Vincent’s awful perm-hair in 2002. Ladies and gentlemen, this is where the trouble truly began. Look at her face!

This more recent “Miley tongue” photo from 2012 probably didn’t help either.

Seriously though, I shouldn’t be trying to make you laugh at all, and I do apologize. The dissolution of any marriage is a very sad thing for a multitude of reasons, and we shouldn’t make light of this serious event. People magazine has indeed confirmed that Monica and Vincent have decided to go their separate ways:

European film stars Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel have separated “by mutual agreement” after 14 years of marriage, according to reports.

The Italian actress, 48, and the French actor, 46, met in 1996 while filming the French film The Apartment. They married three years later and have two daughters – Deva, 8, and Leonie, 3.

Bellucci, a former model, starred in the Matrix sequels and also played Mary Magdalene in The Passion of the Christ. Cassel is best known in the U.S. for his work in Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen, and in Black Swan.

Both of their reps confirmed the split, with Cassel’s saying the separation is “by mutual agreement.”

[From People

The question remains whether or not Monica and Vincent are still trying to work things out or if they’re just separating as a means to filing divorce. My theory? Vincent finally decided to get with one of his side pieces on a more permanent basis. His loss.

Vincent Cassel you are a damn fool!

    • Liv says:

Yep, unbelievably stupid (if he really left her).

    • Rose says:

      Sing it sister!

    • V4Real says:

To each his own but I don’t get this man’s appeal. There is nothing remotely sexy or good looking about him.

Monica is beautiful but it takes more than looks to keep a marriage going. It was rumored that ScarJo once said that after she got over Ryan Reynolds good looks there was nothing more there.

    • RocketMerry says:

      Amen.
Monica always comes across as thoughtful, warm, funny, sensitive and caring; on a more superficial note (which apparently is the only one men care about), she is one of the most gorgeous women that ever existed.

If he left her than he’s a fool indeed.

      • V4Real says:

Maybe she was the one who left.

Weren’t they rumored to have an open marriage; that doesn’t always work out well. Perhaps they are both at fault.

On a lighter note she does not look 48.

    • Shrubee says:

What is she giving him the side eye for? Her bangs are bad enough

  2. lem says:

Both of them have terrible hair in that 2002 set of photos. What the hell is going on with hers?!?

    • Amelia says:

      Extensions gone wrong??
And Cassel is a natural red-head?! I did not know that.
It’s a shame, I really liked them together. I hope their kids are doing alright.

  3. CTgirl says:

This really is too bad. He’s magnetic and she’s gorgeous. After that, can anyone else measure up?

  4. blue marie says:

if that’s the case, then he’s an idiot. she’s hot in that black dress.

  5. Franciss says:

It is a travesty that Cassel is best known in the US for those films. Gah! I love him so bloody much, he’s a terror actor and like dirty-sexy.
I wish them the bet, they were a gorgeous and talented couple.

Side note, does it bother anyone else when Europeans are grouped like that? “…the two European actors….” Rather than “the Italian actress an French actor” though I suppose the article does point that out later. Maybe I’m just cranky this morning.

    • SBJ says:

Italy and France are part of Europe so calling them Europeans is right

She is overrated and not so gorgeous and him…. Well, I don’t see any sex appeal, AT ALL, nothing like his dad was.

  6. Maria says:

    She’s walking sex to me.

    Stunning.

    Him, not so much.

  7. Elodie says:

Bah! Hope she finds someone who treats her with respect and not like a granted property…

  8. cubfan34 says:

He looks so much like his father Jean-Pierre Cassel but his father was better looking.

    • Frida_K says:

      So true.

He looks like the skinny, greasy, low-rent version of his father. Not a whole bunch of class or suave-itude made it down the line, did it?

Meh. I’d go for Pops but say “non” to Monica’s ex.

  9. Maria says:

uhm why do people automatically assume that he is the reason for the break up and that he is the cheater? because he is a man?

    • Joan says:

Yeah, I wonder about that too. I don’t know them well, but it’s unfair to automatically assume he’s the one at fault, just because he’s a man. We don’t know for sure what happened.

      • SG says:

I find that seems to happen quite a bit on this website. It is assumed that the man left or cheated, or that the woman is clinging and being left behind in the dust. It seems like an unconsciously sexist default response to breakups

    • Ginja says:

This!!I agree with you 100%, I also find it funny that the guy gets all the blame in situations like these. Like maybe its mutual or maybe *gasp* it’s her who is the problem?

I agree SG, seems biased and sexist to automatically assume he is the problem with the “side chick”. I think the same thing happened to Johnny Depp, people ripped him a new one and him and Vanessa were not even married, hadn’t been photographed for like forever, and there wasn’t even evidence of him cheating.

    • Elodie says:

Well I gave my reason on why I don’t like the guy in the previous post about them, regardless of whether cheat or no cheat.

    • JennaR says:

I understand your point about being too quick to blame the guy, but in this case I’m pretty sure it’s because of the interview she did where she basically said that he sleeps around when on set away from the family.

      • goga says:

I believe she said they have an open marriage. Which means they are both allowed to sleep with people outside their marriage.

  10. Eleonor says:

I hope he doesn’t follow the “middleagecrisisroute” like Johnny Deep.

  11. Melissa says:

As soon as anyone, especially a celebrity, gives a passive-aggressive statement about their marriage, I immediately believe that it’s on the rocks. And I am almost always right. Marriage is not easy but a lot of people are blessed enough to have extremely happy, healthy, amazing, caring, loving, and faithful marriages. It really is not a foreign concept.

Call me old-fashioned or maybe I was born when dinosaurs were alive, but fidelity-free marriage, open marriage, it’s okay to f#ck anyone whenever you want marriage, “mutual” respect only marriage, just don’t work. When you are invested in a relationship, bonding with the person in many ways, or because you have kids, at some point you’re going to need more.

How about staying single or just having a casual relationship? It’s either you’re married or you’re not.

    • Izzy says:

+1. I guess I was born with the dinosaurs too! πŸ˜€

I find it interesting that HIS people released the “by mutual agreement” statement. I won’t believe that until her people release the same statement.

  12. Izzy says:

He’s so meh, with his open marriage crap. She can do better – as in, find herself a hot younger guy and have a wild romance.

  13. Laura says:

This dude could get it, sry bout their marriage and all but there is something so dirty and sexy about him!!! Gah!

  14. Tiffany27 says:

Idk what happened in their marriage, but I would sell my soul to look like her. If he was cheating (allowed or not) he is a fool.

  15. Mrs.Darcy says:

If he can’t stay faithful to this insanely beautiful woman, he is an unrepentant hound who will never be tamed. That said he is a sexy beast and I do love his work. I hope she finds a really cute young jump off, I can see that driving Vincent nuts, he seems like the “have his cake and everyone else’s” type. I think we may have a Richard Burton/Liz Taylor scenario here in a few years.

  16. hue says:

When will people understand that being beautiful does not mean someone won’t be cheated on. I have seen men with wives who could be supermodels and they still cheat on them with women who wouldn’t be considered all that beautiful by society’s standards. Plus beauty fades- there’s always a someone younger and prettier out there so if that is all someone has going for them then…

  17. drea says:

To me, Monica is one of the most beautiful women in the world. Even that weird hairdo/wig isn’t as off-putting on her.

I don’t know what the arrangement was between Cassel and her (I’d like to think she was allowed to mess around as well), but I hope she finds happiness with someone who thinks she’s all the woman he’ll ever need.

  18. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Monica Belluci and Liam Neeson would be hottastic.

  19. MyLittlePony says:

I am being very sexist now, but Vincent is melting dripping hot, and is what I would deem as great affair and/or casual relationship material, but certainly not husband/father material. So this is a likely outcome in my opinion. Like her a lot too, her Dolce & Gabbana ads are fantastic!

  20. Madpoe says:

    She’s ridiculous beautiful!
Like the kiss between her and Keanu in the Matrix.

  21. Sisi says:

14 years of marriage is impressive for hollywood standards.

  22. RobotOeuf says:

I really don’t get all this international fascination with Monica Bellucci.
Here in Italy she is mostly regarded as a vapid woman and a terrible actress.

By the way, there are rumors about Bellucci having called it quits with Cassel due to her relationship with married Russian tycoon Telman Ismailov.

    http://www.spletnik.ru/buzz/gossip/44491-monika-beluchchi-razvelas-iz-za-oligarkha-telmana-ismailova.html

    • riri says:

Don’t bother, most people here would rather fawn over her beauty and make Vincent look like a dog who cheated on his Goddess of a wife (how dare he!). I too have also heard of her allegedly having affairs including with women (yet he is made out to be the one sleeping around). And yes, depending on who you ask, she is considered vapid and a terrible actress.

    • another nina says:

Yes, all Russian media mentioned it.

    • Bijlee says:

I don’t get the fascination with either of these two. Cassel seems like a douche and Monia seems so boring.

    • Anne says:

Vapid? really? Terrible actress I can see but I can’t see vapid. I’ve read many of her interviews and she comes across as intelligent and she carries herself well. I do find her a tad bit boring though.

    • John Wayne Lives says:

Look at the women worshiped here in the US… prepubescent twig is the order of the day. MB is unapologetically classically womanly… she is a libido bumper. Real woman

  23. Lindsey says:

I can’t understand being the dude that wants some new new after banging Monica Belluci, but I guess some men really do get bored of even the smolderingest of women. SMDH.

  24. KinChicago says:

Wow RobotOeuf- I hope not, that “tycoon” looks like a lawn gnome.

  25. pwal says:

    Wow… Monica’s 48?

  26. Ginger says:

    So much Vincent’s loss +1000!!

  27. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

He looks like a starving werewolf with that perm.

    • Lostara says:

The hair and beard was no “fashion choice” of his; he was working on the movie “Renegade” back then. So his look was necessary for the role.

By the way, I find him incredibly hot in that movie (a western).

  28. Denise says:

I saw Vincent Cassel walking down the street alone in Paris a few years ago. Whatever you think of his face, he does present incredibly well. He was wearing a black suit and white shirt, probably Hedi Slimane for Dior Homme. He had that look of constipation he’s known for and he did glance at me. And I felt like a street urchin in his presence despite doing my best to look good when I’m out. The impeccable dressing combined with that attitude is either a panty loosener or a lady boner killer, depending who you are. (For me it was the latter. I’ve had enough of hot but difficult men in my lifetime!)

  29. Anne says:

So is she considered intelligent and well-spoken in Italy or is it only in the U.S?

    • nebi says:

Actually she never kissed any media a.. in Italy, nor she is particularly friendly with papz like others who call them anytime they take a walk.
She moved from Italy years ago and she always refused a career in the b-List Italian comedies – they can be quite gross but actors are well paid so that very few of them refuse those contracts. She made a couple of them and then she tried something different. Even as a model she had a career on her own.
Therefore media are never kind to her. Of course she is not a Nobel prize, but I think that – so far – her career choices have been smart.

Signs You’re Getting Old #72: you have never heard of these people before in your life.

  31. GByeGirl says:

He looks just like Rand Paul.

  32. DahliaDee says:

I have no opinion whatsoever on their separation, but I’ve always lusted after her and liked his acting. Oh, and for some reason, I always wanted her and Lambert Wilson to get together:
