Cate Blanchett in creamy Armani Privé in Deauville: gorgeous or overworked?

Here are some new photos of Cate Blanchett at the Deauville Film Festival in France on Friday. She was at the opening ceremony in these photos, but I guess she’s at Deauville to premiere Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine. Cate wore this creamy Armani Privé dress which… I’m not sure about. What is going on these days? First I disliked that Christopher Kane spiderweb dress (blah, it didn’t fit properly) and now I’m not feeling this Armani. I mean, don’t get me wrong, even when I’m not crazy about something Cate wears, it’s still pretty amazing. But this seems bulky (it’s a coatdress, according to RCF), overworked and the neck is too high. Plus, it washes her out. She’s so lovely and pale, but would it kill her to wear a bold color? Hopefully, this is as I theorized last week – she’s building up for some spectacular fashion moments for the big awards shows. Hopefully.

Meanwhile, I recently heard that Cate is going to be working on some period film produced by Harvey Weinstein. The film is called Carol, and it’s one of Todd Haynes’ passion projects (all of Haynes’ films are passion projects). According to Deadline, the film is about “a burgeoning relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York… Blanchett is playing a wife trapped in a loveless marriage who’s desperate to break free but fearful of losing her daughter in the process.” Mia Wasikowska was supposed to costar with Cate, but now Mia is out and Rooney Mara is in. I’m not sure if Mia/Rooney was supposed to play the lover or the daughter…? Mia would have been a great choice to play Cate Blanchett’s daughter.

And remember how I said that Blue Jasmine was full of a ridiculous and amazing amount of fashion and jewelry p0rn? Well, Forbes noticed it too and they put together a wonderful article about how all of these designers and jewelers loaned all of this stuff to Cate Blanchett and Woody Allen for the film. It’s really cool! Karl Lagerfeld even designed some custom pieces for Cate.

    Holy Moses. She’s ridiculously beautiful.

    • Marjalane says:

Just saw Blue Jasmine today and she is SO beautiful that she looked good even in the scenes with a red nose and melting make-up! She’s really a versatile actress; I hope she picks up a strong nomination for this!

    • NeoCleo says:

Yep, she’s one of my husband’s crushes. I’d be jealous too, if I didn’t have such a big crush of my own on her.

  2. Abra says:

I think I might not hate it if her skin didn’t blend into the material.

  3. Lucy says:

I like the dress – it needs different shoes though

    • *unf* Joan Jett says:

Yes to different shoes! Or at least a size, that is not too small or too tight for her feet.

    • tealily says:

YES! My first thought was “love it,” but then… I don’t know. Something weird with the length and/or the shoes…

  4. Lila says:

I think this is stunning. The workmanship is stunning and the color and style are gorgeous on her. She was made for couture.

  5. melior says:

Mesmerizing! And I don’t say this often. There’s a eeerie quality to her beauty

  6. Katren says:

    Hideous!

But then again I could never like someone who hangs around with pedophiles. Yuck

    • Turtle Dove says:

I’m not a fan of Allen or Polanski, but, to defend CAte, she’s not hanging out with pedophiles.

Soon-Yi was 21 when she had her affair with Woody Allen.

Cate has no control if Roman Polanski shows up to the premier of Blue Jasmin.

      • Toot says:

Suuure it started when she was 21. Sad that Cate is working with Woody.

      • Barhey says:

Not saying I support any celebrity who supports Roman Polanski (that horrible man needs to be languishing is jail) but I get the feeling the film industry is so chock full of unsavory types that it would be impossible to truly boycott the industry entirely as a high profile actor. It seems like no matter who you choose to work with, they are or are connected with someone or something morally questionable. The only way would be to quit entirely.

  7. NayNay says:

    Looks like a wedding dress.

  8. lisa2 says:

    Her face is stunning.

The dress color is to light for her skin tone. It just kind makes her fade away.

Not a good look or choice this time around.

  9. loie says:

Too bulky! She is ageless and stunning, though.

  10. Ann says:

I even like her fashion misses; she at least takes risks!

But, yeah, two thumbs down for calling pervo creepy Allen her “hero”.

  11. The Original G says:

The shoes are too bridal and the dress colour washes her out. Love her anyway.

  12. LindyLou says:

I think the dress looks very matronly. I love the hair and makeup but no to the dress…and the shoes.

  13. kileyray says:

She is beautiful. The dress is very lovely but it drowns her out. She needs something with a bit more pop!

  14. Azurea says:

I hate to say it y’all, because I adore Cate as much as any of you….but Cate’s forehead is botoxed to a fare-thee-well. She looks to be in strong sunlight & squinting like mad in the top photos, with no frown lines in sight.

    • Mel says:

That just really good make up.
she’s almond eyes and hella cheekbones so her lower eyelids go up to protect her eyes without squinting. You just have to look at the HQs and see all her wrinkels, as well on the armani ad, even on the blue jasmine poster.

    • KB says:

You should watch Blue Jasmine, you can see every beautiful wrinkle and pore on her face!

  15. Ag says:

Cate looks amazing but, yeah, the dress is somehow “off”.

  16. andrea says:

She looks like a conservative bride.

  17. smee says:

The dress has a very “mother of the bride” vibe – it ages her.

But, of course, she’s still fantastic.

  18. Andrea says:

This dress doesn’t do it for Me at all… And the shoes too

  19. lucy2 says:

I think she looks amazing. Don’t 100% love the dress, but does it matter? It’s Cate!

    • Jen says:

CATE BLANCHETT. THAT IS ALL. SHE COULD WEAR A PAPER BAG AND STILL BE FLAWLESS. DO NOT SHADE ZE CATE!

  20. kennedy says:

OSCAR for Cate!! Also, Rooney plays her lover not daughter. So bummed Mia dropped out.

  21. vixo says:

She’s one of the very few fortunate people that always look amazing even in rags. Her Makeup artist, Mary Greenwell, is also a genius.

  22. Ashley says:

She had a couple of other outfits from the festival that I thought were amazing but I think your right in that she is building up for later down the road.

  23. d b says:

I love Cate, BUT…her style the last couple of years is too washed out. I feel she needs more contrast, especially with her hair color. As you age, colors that worked before don’t anymore. Never thought I’d say this, but Cate needs a makeover

    • Ann says:

a, “as you age” has nothing to do with colors not working on you anymore; it has to do with your coloring/makeup/accessories. b, Blanchett does not need a makeover.

      • d b says:

What, you don’t share my opinion?? Lol. However, yes, as you age one’s looks shift–hair color fades, skin tone can shift too. So what? She’s still stunning. I feel her hair color is too pale for her, and so are the colors she’s been wearing.

  24. Tania says:

No no no. This is her first ever misstep. She looks like a granny.

  25. Miss so and so says:

Dress is dreadful. Shoes are dreadful. Cate… just wow she is breathtaking! Her skin is porcelain… she puts the orange tan crowd to shame!

  26. janie says:

I don’t care for the dress or the color. It reminds me of an old lace tablecloth, something just off.

  27. newtsgal says:

Miss Cate could wear a potato sack and she would still look better than most of the Hollyweird crowd….her class and talent are untouchable!

  28. tracking says:

Spectacular dress, but her hair/makeup choices should have been brighter and fresher to offset the washed out effect.

  29. Cary says:

    Miss Havisham

  30. HoustonGrl says:

OMG. She can do no wrong in my eyes!

  31. Mari says:

She glows in this. I like the color and the texture and lower half of the dress. My only comment is that she’s a little too covered up. If it were sleeveless or the neck were lowered a bit it would be a dramatic improvement.

  32. argirl says:

    Cate can do no wrong.

  33. annaloo. says:

    She looks luminous

  34. dcypher1 says:

She is always the epitome of grace and elegance, so beautiful. She can make a potato sack look good.

  35. Mel says:

so much bad taste in this board. Just because YOU wouldn’t wear the dress does not mean it doesn’t look good on her. She looks ethereal and carries it with an elegance and regalness that many could only dream of having. Only cate could go from a bad ass slouchy suit, to this, and to the dior couture tent she just worn.

  36. Flower says:

Lovely but just a bit too bridey, it needed a tint of colour a light peach tone or palest blue would have worked better I think.

  37. EIleen says:

I am somehow getting a Nicole Kidman vibe from this dress, her coloring and the styling-Cate is so pretty wish I could look like her on my “bad fashion” days

  38. Green is Good says:

    Magnificent as always.

  39. Spaz says:

I love cate. Not a huge fan of the dress. And I won’t see blue jasmine because I think woody Allen is so overrated. I’ve never like anything he’s done.

  40. Janet says:

I love the dress and think she looks great in it.

  41. Maritza says:

I totally agree with Kiddo, she does have a mother of the bride look but a gorgeous mother of the bride.

  42. Decloo says:

Ghastly. Like a midwestern mother of the bride.
