Elsa Pataky: ‘Supportive wife is the role she most wants to play,’ says source

Ron Howard’s Rush was released in only five theaters this past weekend, and it averaged $40,000 per screen, which is really good news. That means that the buzz is growing for Rush and that Chris Hemsworth can carry a film which doesn’t feature Fabio hair and a giant hammer. Rush will get its wide release this weekend, and my guess is that it will probably be #1 at the box office one week from now. So, do we give Chris credit for having the acting chops? I’ve said this in many Tom Hiddleton/Loki posts – Tom may have the fan-girls (and fan-boys), but Chris is the one with Hollywood backing him. Hollywood thinks Chris is the Next Big Thing. Chris is booking back-to-back film roles and more often than not, he’s carrying the films.

But should we give Chris’s wife Elsa Pataky some credit too? I think we should. I think Elsa sees herself as powerful Hollywood wife, and it’s her job to support her husband’s career with well-timed family-friendly photo-ops and lovely-dovey red carpet appearances. Us Weekly had a little hint into Elsa’s strategy:

On the press tour for Chris Hemsworth’s movie Rush, Elsa Pataky was never far behind.

“Supportive wife is the role she most wants to play,” says a source of the actress, 37.

It pays in dividends: in Rome, Hemsworth “opened doors and held her hand,” says a witness. “What a gentleman.”

[From Us Weekly, print edition]

This makes sense to me. Elsa may want to work as an actress, but she’s realistic about it. She knows she’s never going to be a movie star in her own right, but she can be one half of a power-couple. It’s the Jennifer Garner/Rita Wilson/Kate Capshaw School of Hollywood Power. And my guess is that Elsa is totally going to get pregnant again and soon, if she’s not already knocked up.

  1. Spooks says:

Because there are no other roles for her.

  2. blue marie says:

ha ha ha, yeah okay. it’s because no one is offering her any roles..

    • Nooneimportant says:

True. She’s an actress and let’s face it all of them want to be be movie stars – but it’s not working out for her, so she will settle to being part of a power couple.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Yeah but I object to Garner being lumped in with this chick and others. She had a pretty solid career hit with Alias and got a decent amount of critical approval for that role. I mean, she had a career before she met Affleck. I think she just genuinely wanted to be a mom and wife, I really don’t think it’s the strategic move that’s insinuated here.

Again, I’m not saying she’s some amazing actress, but I think she’s good enough to play a lead role in a tv series, I just think she’s not interested at this point.

      • Anna says:

I agree. I think ‘supportive wife’ would be the last of Elsa’s roles if she could get others.

      • Westie says:

Garner had a better career than Affleck for much of those early years. It wasnt that long ago that Ben was considered the famewhore douche who took credit for a script that his bestie wrote alone.

      • V4Real says:

The thing about Garner is that she does have some talent and was doing just fine before Ben came alone. I loved her on Alias.

      • campbell says:

Cosign completely with this. Plus, Jen still makes a movie or two a year. No way will Elsa ever have that opportunity.

      • blue marie says:

you’re right, Garner’s really not like the others..

  3. aims says:

Is it just me or does it all seem 1950’s? Being the little wife, behind her husband, making sure he does well. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

    • Anna says:

It’s not as simple. ‘Being a wife’ has given her the most industry/red carpet visibility than she’s had in years. It just hasnt translated into proper work.

Also, an interesting contrast: until the Argo campaign, we almost never saw Ben Affleck with the kids. Always Jen. Whereas India’s first photos were in Chris’ arms, and he’s been photographed w his daughter more than Elsa has been. Or carrying groceries. Or doing other errant stuff. So he’s a star AND a super-involved dad. Elsa’s gotta beef up SOME function.

    • j.eyre says:

Hey aims. I do understand what you are saying and the US Weekly and Esquire pieces tried this angle but I think in the cases Kaiser cited, including Remora, these women are a huge part of their husband’s success. I think Elsa is directing CHemboy in the media and she is doing it just enough that he is not getting the backlash for it. Were I am better woman, I would even say she is taking the hit for it on his behalf – but I am not a better woman and if I canonize her, lusting after her husband is going to seem awkward.

I think in her case, were she offered gigantic career she would take it. But, for now, her best shot is to catapult her husband and hitch a ride. Fortunately for CHemboy, she is savvy and very good at what she is doing.

I am going to choose to believe they are in love because I want nice things for them and India.

      • Anna says:

No. I do not like you being all nice like this 🙁

      • j.eyre says:

You’re right darling, it is a terrible shade on me. Let’s go down-thread and be absolutely unrepentant, shall we?

      • aims says:

I agree. A lot of these actors have a partnership, with makes them more appealing. Tom and Rita, for an example. But I guess the point I was trying to make was. If you feel that your part in life is just being that women behind your man, that rubs me wrong. It’s ok to be supportive, but it’s equally important to follow your path as well.

      • j.eyre says:

yes, I concur. Certainly there are people who honestly do just want to back their partners in life and that is fine, but I do not think it is the assumed role of the woman in the relationship nor do I should be.

I also tend to believe, like others here, that “supportive wife” is not the role she most wants to play but will take it over obscurity.

  4. Kate says:

Well, she’s tied herself to the wrong man if Power Couple is what she’s going for. Hemsworth is a lousy actor, he’s handsome in that beefy jock way that would ensure he would be forever type-cast even if he did have talent, and to top it off he’s a bit of an idiot, so there’ll be no great producing or directing feats once the acting work dries up. He’s got maybe 5 years of proper fame and another 5 years of terrible action films before he ends up back in Australia doing DWTS for the second time.

She would have been better off sticking with Adrien Brody. There’d be less opportunities to be papped, but Brody will at least always have a steady, respected career.

    • bobbiesue says:

I was going to write almost everything you just said! Completely agree. Even with the Adrien Brody part. +1

    • Ashling says:

      Lol’ed.

    • Joy says:

I agree with everything you write except the implication that Brody is some kind of mid-level power player. The guy squandered his moment by picking big vehicles to try and be a Movie star. Now although he does occassional bits in decent films, he is off most peoples radar. He is that guy that people ask the ‘whatever happened to’ question even though he still works.

    • Joy says:

    • Buckwild says:

I don’t know if I would write off Chris Hemsworth so quickly. Since Hollywood has deemed him a “BIG MOVIE STAR”, he could make a successful transition into a long career re: Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio. I think he’ll be around for awhile.

      • Miss Melissa says:

Agreed. Brad Pitt never struck anyone as particularly bright during the height of his beefcake career. He got more interesting as he got older.

And on Angelina’s arm. She made him more interesting, sorry.

Chris seems like a decent guy who enjoys his job and his family in equal measure. I have to say, the thing I liked him most in so far was Star Trek. I thought he was great in that. Thor makes him look a bit like a dote.

Rush looked like it was more of a serious role. Haven’t seen it, but maybe this is a first step towards legitimate work? He might just decide he wants to be serious and start working on it.

Nobody thought of Tom Hanks as serious after Bosom Buddies or Big. It was Philadelphia that changed everything.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I don’t know, you may not like them, but Brad, Leo, Tom–they can act. They may not seem like the brightest/ most eloquent (this might just pertain to Brad), but they can act.

I think Thor is hot and all, but I’ve only seen him as Thor. And Rush doesn’t appeal to me–so I’ll be relying on you people to tell me if he’s any good.

    • Westie says:

Adrien Brody has a respected career? Among who?

      • Anna says:

Thank you. On the one hand we have a 6-picture Marvel deal, double-dose of Howard, potential 2nd franchise, names like Spielberg and Mann on the projects roster… and on the other, someone who became a has-been 5 years ago (dont kill me, Eve).

      • Eve says:

Indeed, Brody doesn’t have a respected carrier…anymore. And you know who we can (at least, partially) thank for that, don’t you?

So no, I won’t kill you for saying that because it IS true – although, and to be perfectly honest, I hope you won’t kill me for saying that Hemsworth, in spite of having the better carrier right now, cannot act his way out of a wet paperbag. And it deeply saddens me that the actor whose acting chops (lol!) leave A LOT to be desired is the one getting the better opportunities. Sorry, but I find that totally unfair, no matter how you slice it.

P.S.: I can’t help but laugh every time I type “Hemsworth’s acting chops”. I’m really sorry, I don’t mean to insult you, but I think he’s awful. I even call him “HAMsworth” – still better than Henry Cavill though.

      • Anna says:

        Hi Eve!

Ok, so…even though I would MARRY HEMSWORTH TO DEATH (TM), I do think Brody is the better actor. Actually, if you hadnt gone MIA for the last few months, you’d have noticed my recurring comments of apprehension that RUSH reviews will all say something along the lines of ‘H struggles to hold his own against Bruhl.’ I am totally the ‘unbelieving Thomas’ when it comes to him and his bona fides. Miss Jane has been much more faithful 🙂

And yet, he is getting critical acclaim for his acting in RUSH, and I really dont think that the likes of Mann and Howard (TWICE) and Spielberg (even tho Robocapalypse’s fate is in Q ATM) would be so eager to work with him if he really didnt have a good dose of talent to carry their films. These are not the people for whom a pretty face/butt and likable paps shots are enough.

      • Eve says:

        @ Anna:

Not to be a complete bitch (even though I know I am and I’m ownning it)…but I don’t always hold Spielberg’s opinion on an actor’s performance all that high. For instance, he loves Tom Cruise — hadn’t Cruise gone batshit-sciento-crazy, I bet Sielberg would still be working with him.

Hemsworth may have charisma (which doesn’t appeal to me), but he’s not a good actor. I’m really sorry, my dear, for posting these comments — the sole reason why I’ve refrained myself from expressing my opinion on Hamsworth’s acting was to not (even inderectly and unintentionally) insult or hurt you (I really mean this). But he’s no better than, say, Mark Wahlberg — I can watch him in a movie, I’m not especially bothered by his presence…but, just like Wahlberg, he plays the same character in every single film he’s in (with the same mannerisms, the same facial expressions, even the same voice tone). So, my point is that the roles they keep landing could certainly be in better hands (not necessarily Brody’s, by the way).

But I had to post these because I needed to make a point: the relationship with this woman (and his bad career choices while he was with her, and BECAUSE of her) has practically destroyed what could/should have been a wonderful, respected carrier.

A final observation: it’s not like I hate him (Hemsworth) — far from that. And I still prefer that he gets the roles that could be easily end up in Justin Timberlake’s or Henry Cavill’s hands…*shudders*

P.S.: Oh, dear god, I misspelled “career” TWICE in my original comment.

      • Eve says:

        And ONCE AGAIN in my second reply — forgive me, please. I know it’s C A R E E R.

      • Anna says:

You are the sweetest, most considerate b*tch! MUAH!

      • Eve says:

        *muah back*

Oh, and I noticed another one of my misspellings…I typed “inderectly”. People, I know it’s “indirectly”.

P.S.: I took an anxiolytic pill so maybe that’s the reason for my typos.

  5. H. Scott says:

I think Elsa would most love to be a huge superstar in her own right, but she is a better wife and mother than an actress, so it’s probably better if she focuses on her strengths.

  6. Maddy says:

I really enjoyed Rush, actually. I was surprised as I wasn’t expecting much of Chris, perhaps unfairly. I was also very busy fangirling Daniel Bruhl. He’s gorgeous.

  7. Mia 4S says:

Wow, what a sacrifice! Think of all the great roles she pass…hahahaha! Sorry I can’t finish.

The movie is supposed to be good but it won’t come close to number one. There is a big animated movie opening. Still, if he is trying to distance from Marvel this is a good start.

  8. Lila says:

Honestly whatever works for her and them. There is nothing to support any ideas that he is forcing her to do anything. He seems to love her. This seems like her choice for her career and family. I’m not going to shade her for what she chose.

  9. janie says:

I love this couple! Not everyone can be a mega star, but there are a lot of very rich ones who work all the time on all kind of projects. I think that’s the life they both want.

  10. lucky says:

and Jennifer Garner has a career, or at least had one that was quite successful.

  11. Maria says:

“Hemsworth “opened doors and held her hand,” says a witness. “What a gentleman.”

WOW lol. do your duty as a wife and mother and he might hold your hand!

if both partners are fine with it, no problem for me. if you see people with big careers talk about marriage and such basically all of them have a supporting partner. sherly sandberg said ‘the most important career choice you’ll make is who you marry’and that goes for both genders.

    • Smoochy says:

And Chris married a plastic surgery loving famewh*re whose only purpose now is to “be a supportive wife and mother” to his progeny. Speaks volumes to me about the kind of guy he really is away from the cameras.

  13. ShakenNotStirred says:

She’s giving up acting because she’s terrible at it. Makes perfect sense to me.

  14. GlimmerBunny says:

He has “Fabio Hair” in Rush too! Not that I mind because I think he is the hottest with longer hair 🙂

  15. Iggles says:

She is very pretty! Especially with the long bob.

Good for her. She has a man who is successful and can provide for their family. She is choosing to invest in her marriage instead of trying to use his fame to get roles. Smart choice in my book.

  16. Relli says:

    hahahahahahahaha OK then…

  17. Miss Jupitero says:

CHemboy is hitting it big, and I think this will be the film that will establish his acting chops. No flash in the pan here: I think he’ll be with us for a long time. He certainly works hard.

As did Elsa, I could snark about her. Yeah she had other dreams, but if they are happy together, I think being the support system is a worthy role. It’s not the 50s anymore. Back then there was little recognition that wives/mothers were equal partners in anything. This has changed.

Poor TommyAnnE is crying again in the kitchen. That should be him on the red carpet with his beloved.

  18. QQ says:

Ohhhh celebitches!… This place is my fucking sanctuary! I truly do mean it, i Love we all see thru this chick and her attentionwhoriness and machinations and things like that Maroon 5 guy being a douchebag, or Lulzing at J.aniston is preggo… is really the small Snarky things

  19. j.eyre says:

I will be doing my damnedest to put Rush in the #1 spot this weekend. It is taking every ounce of strength I have not to sneak out to the Arclight and see it this week.

Remora is beautiful but holy hannibal, I could absolutely eat Chemboy up with a spoon in any incarnation. I love that he is getting so much buzz about this movie. He and PocketSquare (Bruhl) are quickly becoming my favorite couple (you know, next to CHeyre)

    • Anna says:

      Please teleport me to LA!

ETA – Being totally unrepentant 😀

    • j.eyre says:

I am still working on that, darling. I have Miss M manipulating a few theories as we speak. Mr. Rochester wanted us to “go through the movies and decide what we should see” on Saturday. I laughed him out of the room.

Being a smart man, I think he sees the benefit in accompanying me to 2 hours of hot CHemboy operating as pure sex. Chemboy may, in fact, be his best friend come Sunday morning. And if we could work you into the scenario, it would cement things.

      • Marty says:

I already saw the gif of his ass on tumblr. There’s no way I’m not going to see this movie at least five times.

      • j.eyre says:

WHAT?!? Excuse me, I need to cancel a parent/teacher conference to devote my life to Tumblr.

Make no mistake, I will be in the theater every day after Saturday while Mr. Rochester is at work. I am simply saving my first time for him… hell, he deserves at least one “first” from me.

      • Anna says:

Miss Jane, I am available for ALL scenarios.

        Marty.

        Marty…

        Marty –

        Ok, words fail me.

      • j.eyre says:

FFS MARTY! I have sh!t to do today! There goes any productivity that isn’t battery operated.

        Oh how I love you.

Whatever scenario we work out, Anna – it is, without a doubt – going to involve what Marty has linked. As soon as he hits the bed, I will be ready with the straps, you be on task with the crop.

And you too, I love you as well. Strangely, after clicking that link for the 477th time, there is very little I don’t love.

  20. Asiyah says:

Her game is whatever gets her the most attention. I think that’s her only goal. If that means being the supportive wife, she’ll do it. If that means being a “movie star,” she’ll do it. She could be offered roles but if being his wife gets her more attention she’ll turn them down.

    • Vee says:

No way, she’s going to get acting roles without CH pulling those strings—she’s a terrible actress, unless she takes clothes off I guess–they’re always open to strippers.

My guess is the fameho finally hit it big, and he’s the prize. Well good luck to them.

  21. Teresa says:

Says, the woman who Adrian Brody bought a castle for.

  22. holly hobby says:

With the dyed hair, she looks like a hipster Ivanna Trump. Could be that they share the same nose job.

  23. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

What happened with Kate Capshaw’s career? I’m guessing the high point was when she was in Indiana Jones–where she met Steven Spielberg. Because honestly, the only reason I know her name is because she married Spielberg. That and I like she hasn’t fucked up her face with surgery.

  24. TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

Fabio Wig and the Giant Hammers sounds like a good name for a band.

    • j.eyre says:

      I call theremin!

      • TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

I totally just did a Spongebob wave to some internal theramin grooves, not gonna lie at all!

That’s fine. I call lead ukelele.

      • j.eyre says:

I assume CHemboy will be wielding the Glockenspiel.

(and, I’m sorry – do people not do Spongebob waves when a theremin is mentioned?)

      • TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

Sadly, there is a 16% of the population that does not Spongebob wave at the mention of theremins. Scientists speculate that its due to a recessive gene.

CHarms on glockenspiel. Tommyanne is on tambourine, so long as he promises to wear the Stevie Nicks wig.

  25. Dommy Dearest says:

I’m getting to be pretty over Hemsworth. Don’t like the stocky body nor the hair. Plus his smothering wife is a major turn off. The whole thing just seems fake at this point.

    • Vee says:

He seems real. She seems fake.

      • Dommy Dearest says:

I feel like he’s at least somewhat aware that she’s with him due to his ‘star power’. He’s too low key (ha!) while she seems all about floating on the rainbow bridge and posing for any and every picture that comes her way.

  26. Vee says:

“But should we give Chris’s wife Elsa Pataky some credit too? I think we should. I think Elsa sees herself as powerful Hollywood wife, and it’s her job to support her husband’s career with well-timed family-friendly photo-ops and lovely-dovey red carpet appearances. ”

Nope, don’t see her helpful. I see her as a trailing anchor behind a boat that he has to work harder and harder just to stay a float. She’s not supportive at photo shoots—she’s a hog for the spotlight. Sorry, JMO

  27. Caz says:

Elsa is lucky to be with Chris. He could have picked anyone. The body language with her hand on his chest says it all, really. Was she with one of the Supernatural boys for a while..or am I dreaming that?

Yes, she’ll be pregnant again so if they split she’ll get a bigger payout.

Agree with all about Elsa’s acting “talent”.

    I’m a bit lost…who is TommyAnne, Celebitchies?

  28. ThunderGoddess says:

I still don’t understand why this lady has been spread all over the media due to a lucky marriage. I never heard of her before she had married Hemsworth. Whatever her original aims were, she bought a lavish life insurance for herself and her kids…. Sad part is that she is not helping because she is a major turn off, unlike Jennifer Garner or Rita Wilson.
She also seems fake and an attention-seeking monster (signing autographs at your husband premieres? Maybe only Angelina Jolie does that haha).
Time will tell…just my two cents, but she is going to make Chris career sink, despite his box office success….
