Brad Pitt talks about Oscar hopes in Tokyo

We reported yesterday on Brangelina’s arrival in Japan. As the family walked through the airport, it seems like every photographer in the world got pictures of them. Today Brad had a press call in Tokyo for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Unfortunately for all involved, he neither shaved off his moustache nor took off that newsboy cap.

Brad did talk about how honored he was by the critical reaction to Button, and how much he hopes people will keep coming back to see it. He also talked a little about his own chaotic life, but managed to stay mostly on-topic about the film. Reuters has details.

Hollywood actor Brad Pitt said on Wednesday he was thrilled by the raft of Academy Award nominations for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” which include his own first nomination for the best actor award.

Pitt was in Tokyo with his partner Angelina Jolie and their six children for the Japan premier of the film, which leads this year’s field with 13 Oscar nominations, one short of the record shared by “All About Eve” (195O) and “Titanic” (1997).

“So we’re thrilled to see it, to see it acknowledged that way,” Pitt told a news conference in Tokyo. For us you know, it means that more people get to see it and I think it’s a worthy film that deserves that kind of viewing — over and over again. Go see it three times and see it again,” he added.

Pitt, 45, faces a tough race for the best actor award, to be announced on February 22, with Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke seen as the favorites for their respective roles as a gay rights activist in “Milk” and an aging professional fighter in “The Wrestler.”

“Benjamin Button” tracks the love story between the title character, played by Pitt, and Daisy, played by Cate Blanchett, and the joy and pain they face as one gets younger and the other older.

Pitt, said his current life was as dramatic as the life of the fictional Button, who was born in his eighties and aged backwards.

“Well, I think it’s well documented. I have six children now so it doesn’t get more dramatic than that,” said Pitt.

In July 2008, Jolie gave birth in France to twins, a girl named Vivienne Marcheline and a boy named Knox Leon. In addition to the twins, Jolie and Pitt are parents to four other young children — adoptees Maddox, Pax and Zahara, and their first biological daughter, Shiloh. Japanese television showed the entire family arriving at the airport in Tokyo, greeted by screaming fans.

“Benjamin Button,” loosely based on a 1920s short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, has been floating around Hollywood for decades. The film’s producers, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, took over the project about 18 years ago, but struggled with the central issue — how to depict its star being born as an old man and eventually dying as a baby.

Technical wizardry allowed the producers and director David Fincher to use Pitt throughout rather than multiple actors. Despite the flow of Oscar nominations, “Benjamin Button” has had a rough ride so far this awards season, having been ignored by both the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes, two Oscar bellwethers.

I think Benjamin Button will probably take home a few Oscars for the special effects and make-up, but I doubt it will pull a Forrest Gump and win Best Actor, Director and Picture, despite its Gump-like qualities.

And while this is perhaps off-topic, where is Cate Blanchett? She’s been MIA for a large part of promoting this film. I realize Blanchett has work to do in Australia (I think she’s directing a play) but would it kill her to show up for this film’s media blitz every now and then? I miss her, and her fabulous style.

Isn’t Cate Blanchett expecting? She may not be up to so much intensive international travel these days.

  2. daisy424 says:

BB is one of the best films I have seen. Very interesting story. I found his character was easy to care about.

I agree Kaiser, the special effects/make-up were great. Funny you mentioned Forrest Gump; BB reminded me of FG in how he makes his way through life, what an odyssey.

    Texasmom, Kate is pregnant again??

  3. Chiara says:

I was sorry to see BP was nominated. The first 54 minutes of the film was computer generated, following scenes were flat.

I enjoyed Leo’s performance in Revolutionary Road, Ralph Fiennes or David Kross in the Reader for the 5th slot.

  4. Sauronsarmy says:

No, Cate is not pregnant. I know its down to Sean and Mickey but can somebody give Frank langella an award? Yeah some people thought frost/nixon was bad but I thought Frank did great.

  5. anna says:

@ daisy – not sure if you knew, but they (fg and bb) were written/adapted by the same guy, Eric Roth, so similarities are, I suppose, expected.

  6. Kaiser says:

Daisy, yep, anna’s right. Lots of people have been commenting on the button-gump thing.

I want Brad’s sweater. It’s so pretty. It will be mine.

  7. daisy424 says:

    Thanks for the explanation *wink*

  8. Orangejulius says:

I loved the movie and thought Brad did a great job in all but his scenes with Cate. They didn’t seem to have any chemistry and when he looked at her with that blank look in his eyes…

  9. jay says:

He really believes his life is sooooo dramatic. I mean tons of families have 6 or more children. He is so full of himself. He and Angelina work hard to make it seem so dramatic….but the only dramatic thing is his children being raised by nannies. Now that’s drama…or atleast it will be when the children write books.

  10. DD says:

well I have SIX kids this, and I have SIX kids that…
He doesn’t have much to say other than the fact that he has 6 whole kids.

  11. NotBlonde says:

I agree Kaiser. That sweater needs to be on me. Now. Probably smelling of smuggled beer and baby throw-up….i’m kidding! He seriously looks like he smells delicious in those pictures. I just went into creeper mode…

  12. morgs says:

I’m sure Cate’s taking a back seat because even though some of us LOVE HER, the majority of the world would rather hear Bradley speak than Cate. He’s the main ticket, she’s probably just enjoying her family and working her theater job.

  13. MT says:

Perhaps Cate is a responsible mother who cares more for the stability of her children than thet promotion of her career and photo-ops?

It is the Brangelina that got their priorities all wrong. NOT cate.

  14. dali says:

Brad may be emotionless and dull with no acting skills, but amazingly he does have fashion sense. He might be one of the best dressed guys in Hollywood, with perfectly fitting jeans and yummy sweaters like this one. Angelina probably has no say in it, since she dresses like a grandparent.

btw, how are they going to drag their kids from country to country many times a month when the kids finally get old enough to want stable schools, regular friends, etc? Brangie’s incredibly selfish lifestyle might have to be altered a bit then. Most people don’t drag their infants all over the world a hundred times a year.

  15. Jenna says:

Oh my god, for some reason these pictures spark my fancy for that man. But fear not, Jensen Ackles, I will not stray away.

I have not seen the movie yet but I plan to. I hear it’s three hours long and I would prefer to be at the house where I can pause the movie for any type of break.

  16. Keekee says:

Why is he always squinting? Eye lift gone bad?

  17. Aspen says:

    MT: Indeed!

  18. Diva says:

    Maybe he needs glass, lol.

He’s making me all warm inside in these pics… even with that God-awful mustache. {=0)

I love the hats on him, too. Not on everyone, just him. I tried to put that kind of hat on my husband, who is 29, and he looked like he needed to be returned to the old age home, lmao.

  19. Diva says:

    GLASSES, lol… he’s clearly got a glass already {=0P

  20. so what says:

I think BB will win some oscars, hopefully Brad won’t…I think he is a mediocre actor at best, he used to be hot, now hes not!

  21. Rose says:

Dali, I am a tad offended by your comment,I am a grandmother and I dress better than Angelina Jolie and I know not to go out in public wearing my clothes backward.

  22. Keekee says:

Rose, maybe you should give fashion tips to AJ then. I think she’s confusing herself with GRANDMA of six instead of mom of six!

  23. Keekee says:

If Brad needs glasses that badly where he is squinting in every picture then he really needs to consider Lasix!

  24. jpd says:

brad has come along way in his acting, i enjoyed his acting in this film, and i agree about the sweater, sexy at it’s best.
