Idris Elba & Naomie Harris at the ‘Mandela’ premiere in London: gorgeous?

Here are some photos of Idris Elba and Naomie Harris at last night’s London premiere/royal screening of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, the film based on Mandela’s memoir of his early years. The stars and royals walked the red carpet a good hour before the news of Mandela’s death broke through the international press. According to some of the royal beat reporters who were in the screening (or waiting outside), the news of Mandela’s passing was withheld until the movie was over, or at least that’s what I heard.

I’ve enjoyed covering Idris and Naomie’s promotional tours on behalf of this film because both have been extremely respectful of Mandela and his legacy. You can just tell that Idris was and is so incredibly honored to be playing Mandela and for his portrait of the icon to be accepted by Mandela himself and those who knew Mandela best. The story Idris has been telling recently is this: when presented with a photo of Idris, in character on the set, Nelson Mandela thought he was being shown a photo of himself. Idris loves that story.

After the royal premiere, Idris issued a statement on Mandela’s passing, saying: “What an honor it was to step into the shoes of Nelson Mandela and portray a man who defied odds, broke down barriers, and championed human rights before the eyes of the world. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.” Harvey Weinstein (who produced the film) also made a statement – you can read it here.

Superficial stuff: I think this is my favorite dress that Naomie has worn thus far! The dress is McQueen and it is GORGEOUS. Also: Twitter was blowing up last night with people talking about how Idris’s Oscar chances have gone up now. STOP. Don’t turn Mandela’s passing into an Oscar campaign.

Madiba’s death is going to be a dose of publicity heaven for Harvey Scissorhands.

    • LadySlippers says:

I never thought about Harvey reaping the benefits. But dayum, you are so very right.

      *frowns*

I was okay with the cast getting a big bump from his death but I have to draw the line at Harvey. Not that it’ll do any good.

  2. LadySlippers says:

    Both were gorgeous.

  3. LAK says:

the front of her weave is appalling. If you are going there, do it properly!!!!

I’m sorry to say that Hollywood *is* that crass. That was my 2nd thought after i heard about Madiba’s passing. This film and the production crew are going to receive a boost from his death.

This film had great reviews coming out of Cannes and Idris on everyone’s lists as a dead lock. Then other Oscar bait films came out and this film started to falter to point where it looked like it had dropped off completely.

This is a great chance [in their view] to show how liberal they are. Harvey is probably dancing with glee.

    sidenote – yea McQueen!!!

    • ldub says:

      YES. those EDGES. NO, girl.
      the rest is perfection.

    • I Choose Me says:

Is it a weave? Or did her hair person go overboard with the product? I just thought it was too much hairspray. Other than that mah girl is flawless. Idris looks his fine self as per usual.

    I love Naomi Harris’ dress!!!

I have yet to see the movie. It’s only played in two theaters in Manhattan *frown*, but luckily one of them is quite close to where I live.

  5. Jenna says:

Oh, Luther how I love thee…but not in a way where I’d want to hit it. That makes sense, right?

  6. blue marie says:

    They both look so lovely

  7. Violeta says:

Urgh that dress is perfection… Chiwetel come and get back together with that woman already!

    *dives in foxhole*

  8. Lark says:

Both are incredibly stunning. Idris is my forever and ever dong, even with the DJ’ing.

And yes, old Harvey Scisscorhands quickly issued a statement on Mandela’s death to promote the film and it was cringeworthy to the point that several of the film journalists were shaking their heads on twitter. The thing is, from the get go while people were meh about the film they were praising Idris and Naomi for their performances…but Harvey kind of shoved them aside because he picks his “favorites” and he was heavily pushing August: Osage County and The Butler….In the past few weeks, the film has been out in a lot of the NYC/LA theaters and a lot of the critics were like “wait, why aren’t people pushing Idris for a Best Actor nomination?”….so that started picking up some renewed interest for him…Add in Mandela’s death, the film breaking records in SA with it’s opening, and old Harv is going to make Idris his pet project. Watch. I would be shocked if Idris didn’t get a nomination after this…..I bet the nominees will be Chiwetl Ejiofor, Idris Elba, Bruce Dern (old, beloved, campaigning his heart out, won Best Actor at Cannes and went from a maybe nom to a guaranteed one according to the Oscar pundits recently), Robert Redford (supposedly Jack Nicholson is campaigning behind the scenes Harvey W. style for him), and Matthew McConaughey. I think poor Leo is going to get pushed out, always the bridesmaid and never the bride…..I know people went crazy at a Wolf screening, but some of the critics said it may be too excessive for the old stodgy academy members (apparently it was almost NC-17)

    • LadySlippers says:

And people get all sentimental with an iconic person’s death. This (sadly) could not have come at a better time for Idris to get a Best Actor nod from the Academy. Naomie will probably also get a nod but if we see a lot of public tributes for Mandela that continue all throughout December — that may be the best campaign ever waged for an actor.

Plus, with 12 Years a Slave *and* The Butler *and* Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, the Academy can pretend its inclusive because, look Ma, THREE films featuring a mostly black cast! And Harvey is behind two of them!!! Wahoo! (Please note the sarcasm in this paragraph)

I see 12YAS getting f’ed over too because I don’t think Brad is on par with Harvey. Although I’ll reserve judgement until I see M:LWTF. I’d like to say Chiwetel was outstanding in 12YAS. So was Lupita.

    • Violeta says:

I finally saw both Nebraska and All Is Lost, and all I can say it’s an equal tie between Bruce Dern, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Robert Redford…. All 3 performances are amazing! I have yet to see Dallas Buyers’ Club and Mandela ALWTF but will do next week.

@LadySlippers 12 Years A Slave will make it to the Oscars but the film will probably have a chance to win on technical stuff and producing, with still a slight chance for Steve McQueen and Chiwetel for a win imo. But then again like I said Bruce Dern and Robert Redford are equally amazing…

      • AG-UK says:

@Violeta I saw Dallas Buyers Club last week when I was in NY as it won’t hit the UK until Feb. Well both 12 YAS and the others have competition as both Matthew and Jared absolutely brilliant. I even saw it the next day as I felt between the tears I missed dialogue which I did. It’s a tough year as a lot of good performances .

      • LadySlippers says:

This year really is a year of fantastic films.

        *sigh*

I’d like to see some real diversity in the Oscar wins. And go to people often overlooked.

      • AG-UK says:

@Ladyslippers – I agree but I have a soft spot for Matthew not only am I from Texas I usually don’t like the accent but his really works and his career has turned 360 degrees. Anyone I seem to want to win anything never do so I stopped getting bothered by it plus over her it’s on so late NO WAY I would stay up.

      • LadySlippers says:

@AG-UK: *Now* I get your name/handle! 🙂 So then do you sport an A&M jersey on Saturdays??

I get wanting either Matthew or Leo to finally get credit for their acting but Idris and Chiwetel are equally good and probably could use the credit a nod and a win could provide even more (who knows if we’ll pay attention to them again whereas Matthew and Leo we will).

As for the great Robert, we already know he’s good so let’s share the Award as it sounds as if there are plenty of equally deserving performances.

      • AG-UK says:

        @Ladyslippers
No my handle is actually my intitials. IF I were to support a Texas team would be UT as I lived there for 4 years. Yes all are so good it’s going to be tough..

      • LadySlippers says:

Funny! I wrote Longhorns and then remember that was UT and not T A&M. (Bad on me!!!)

So how long have you lived in London? And will you come back Stateside again?

  9. Beth says:

    Idris is soooooo hot.

  10. JEM says:

I’m a little bit in love with both of them.

  11. OriginallyBlue says:

So much pretty on one carpet.

  12. Christina says:

Naomie is lovely and her dress is great. Now onto Idris…..damn. He is such a beautiful man. Everytime I see him, I just wanna jump through the computer screen and climb all over him. Ok…getting too excited right before work…LOL. Seriously though, while it is crass that Hollywood will try to cash in with this movie because of Mandelas death…it is what it is. Hollywood is gross like that. However, I felt like this movie would be Idris’s moment to really shine before Nelson Mandela passed, and I hope it will still be. Idris is a fantastic actor. I think he should do less Pacific Rim type movies and more character driven and dramas. Also any films that involve him getting naked …

  13. Cristina says:

    They are so beautiful!

  14. taxi says:

Naomie wears that dress beautifully. Her body is perfect for it.

  15. miapatagonia says:

I thank the movie gods for giving us men like Idris and Chiwetel. So manly, elegant, and intelligent.
