Juergen Teller refused to shoot Miley Cyrus for new Marc Jacobs ads

Miley Cyrus

You’re looking at the new Marc Jacobs ads starring Miley Cyrus. We should all be grateful that we’re seeing “grumpy, moody” Miley instead of “tongue” Miley. She’s such a ragey rebel, right? The other ad at the bottom of this post is worse and makes her look like Justin Bieber. Moreso than usual, I mean.

Believe it or not, these ads caused a bit of a stink at their conception. Miley’s been working up to a campaign for awhile. She kissed a lot of Marc Jacobs ass to get here. Miley wore Marc’s designs to last year’s Met Gala and Night of Stars events. Both dresses went over very well in comparison to the dreadful way Miley usually styles herself. Miley also went naked on a Marc Jacobs shirt, and she featured another t-shirt about gay marriage rights on her Instagram account (photo below). So … Marc loves Miley, but Marc’s usual photographer does not. Juergen Teller flat-out refused to shoot this campaign. Ouch:

MARC AND MILEY: For the spring advertising campaign, Marc Jacobs chose a special friend of his and Robert Duffy’s — Miley Cyrus. David Sims photographed the most talked-about celebrity phenomenon in Los Angeles alongside models Natalie Westling and Esmerelda Seay Reynolds on a beach set by Stefan Beckman.

That Jacobs would choose Cyrus is altogether not surprising. She has been a big supporter of his, having recently taken her clothes off for the “Protect the Skin You’re In” T-shirt campaign and presented the designer and his business partner with the top award at Fashion Group International’s Night of Stars in October.

“Robert became friends with Miley a few years ago, and I know her through him,” Jacobs told WWD. “I met her years ago at Robert’s birthday party in Savannah and we became friendly.”

The campaign is not a literal translation of the designer’s spring runway production, though. “We wanted this beach with girls kind of sulky and broody, and we thought it would be cool if it was Miley with what could be two friends, feeling distant and quite dark.”

Cyrus, he explained, fit the campaign’s vibe. “We all just love her and her entire being, her energy, her talent, her intelligence, everything,” he said. “There’s nothing I don’t like about her. She is just genuine and very natural.”

Not everyone in Jacobs’ camp seems to share his opinion, though. Jacobs usually works on collection campaigns with Juergen Teller, but this season’s choice of Sims, who shot the recent beauty campaign, had a simple explanation. “I have worked with Juergen for years and love him as an artist,” Jacobs said. “He just didn’t want to shoot her.”

[From WWD]

Damn, Juergen Teller whipped out his bitch on this campaign. That’s pretty telling. I wonder what Miley thought about Marc and everyone else knowing that Juergen wasn’t down with her role as spokesmodel. Thank goodness Marc didn’t call in Terry Richardson in a pinchhitting role for this campaign. Can you imagine?

I really like these pictures. They look great and she somehow looks good.

  3. Aura says:

    This campaign looks great,

  4. Annabelle says:

I love the Justified picture of Timothy Olyphant.

  5. bsh says:

She looks terrible in those photos. She’s such a nice girl but god, nobody, especially herself, seems to be able/care about valuing her in the right way.

    • LOL says:

she is such a nice girl??????

    • Maria says:

I’m sorry but she’s so ugly… I like her catchy songs but that doesn’t hide the fact that she’s unattractive. She’s talented but still ugly.

      • Moi says:

What an ugly thing to say. You can disagree with her antics and I swear if I ever see another picture with her tongue sticking out, but don’t be hateful. In reality, she is not ugly aesthetically. And you need keep this video in mind. Her performance of Jolene, is mesmerizing.

Someone else is using Moi as well, I will post as “Moi, just Moi” from now on. 🙂

She looked good at the Met Gala, but I’m not sure how feel about “Teenage Wasteland”

  7. CaribbeanLaura says:

Seriously are she and Bieber long lost twins????????/

  8. Kiddo says:

Moody atmosphere, professionally executed selective lighting. I think Miley looks attractive and androgynous, which may have been the intended aesthetic. In the first photo, it seems that Miley’s companion might been murdered, with the viewer questioning, “Is the red her hair color, or is it saturated with blood?”. This would have made for excellent movie poster material, if the narrative was about a murder mystery or a story in the horror genre. With the selective lighting, it’s difficult to see the clothing. Maybe the photographer wasn’t so much against Miley promoting the brand, as he was against the direction of the campaign? Maybe this type of styling isn’t his thing or he didn’t feel as capable in producing the end result.

I agree, I really like the atmosphere and mood in these pictures, I think the composition is great. However, I think Miley is failing here. She looks like she’s trying hard to be pouty, something off in the position of her mouth. I think she was supposed to look androgynous, and they are succeeding in that, but I think she looks too much like a child actor IMO. Like trying too look brooding instead of just brooding.

  9. Liv says:

“I met her years ago at Robert’s birthday party in Savannah and we became friendly.”

She’s 21 years old. When was she supposed to hang at a party of Robert Duffy?!

  10. bns says:

Marc is such a famewhore. He only picked her to get people talking.

I hate her, but that dress she wore to the MET gala is perfection.

    • TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

I agree whatever happened to using real models, not the celebrity of the moment; that’s why ad campaigns in the 80s and 90s were so much better; great models, great photography a lot of variety and the emphasis on fashion, not tacky celebrity, The fashion world has made a large mistake focusing on celebrity, and not fashion. Anyone remember chipmunk’s “collaboration” with Max Azria for walmart; how much did chipmunk get for slapping her name and face on those products?
And marc Jacobs ass kissing is fulsome; her “intelligence” Please, chipmunk’s an uneducated illiterate twit like most celebutads, notice the message t-shirts were worn with an ulterior motive – money and keeping in the spotlight, the politics was an afterthought.

  11. Leila in wunderland says:

    She looks like a zombie.

Either the guy didn’t want to meet her because he thinks she’ll be annoying based on her antics, he’s scandalized and offended by her twerky, unladylike image, or he’s bothered by one of her cultural offenses from last year. I’m guessing it’s the second.

I liked her gay marriage rights t-shirt.

  12. Frida_K says:

I’m with Juergen on this one. Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas. Why do it if you aren’t compelled? He’d be slimed by the second-hand connection to “Uncle Terry” AND he’d have to deal with The Tongue….ugh. No amount of money would be enough to compensate.

    Smart guy, Juergen.

  13. gaggles says:

Meh. The photos are not terrible. Can’t stand her though. She strikes me as incredibly vapid and shallow.

  14. Roxanna says:

Is it just me or does the last picture remind you of Angelica’s doll Cynthia from the Rugrats?

  15. Venus says:

Considering the recent W cover photos, maybe Jurgen Teller did Miley a favor by stepping out…

  16. Nicolette says:

I like it for the fact that her mouth is closed, and her stupid tongue isn’t hanging out like a panting dog for once. And she isn’t licking anything. Refreshing.

  17. als says:

Maybe Juergen just doesn’t like her. I’m sure many people in the industry don’t like her, but a few actually express it.

  18. Malificent says:

I’m having a hard time getting with the Post-Apocalyptic Victorian Schoolgirl look. It’s like “The Buccaneers” meets “On the Beach”….

  19. GIRLFACE says:

So… I’ve been watching Homeland and I’ve come to the conclusion that Miley Cyrus is probably the only reason why people in the Middle East hate us all. It’s totally fitting that Marc would like her. In my opinion his designs look late 90s and budget just like Miley. The only decent thing he ever puts out are bags sometimes. I also think the campaign tag line may as well say: “Marc Jacobs. We’re trying.”

  20. Dani says:

For a second I thought the picture of her sitting on the beach was Justin Beiber. Yikes.

  21. Marianne says:

Juergen Teller was responsible for those ugly pics recently in Wmagazine. So good. Those pictures of miley are actually quite good.

  22. Bread and Circuses says:

Nice enough photos, but the first one makes her look odd. Androgynous, yes–but also there are weird shadows around her mouth that do not go well with the emo eye makeup. They’ve made her whole face look malformed.

I actually prefer the Justin Beiber shot.

  23. Aly says:

My god…I can’t believe MARC JACOBS hired miley Cyrus to be the face of his campaign. Why would you want someone so unattractive to be your model? She has no business being connected to the name Marc Jacobs, and Teller obviously know that. Good for him for keeping his integrity. This new campaign became a joke the moment they hired her.

  24. moi says:

composition is awful in this photo…the concept is good but poorly executed. And miley is not smart; she may be pretty, whatever, good voice, anything BUT smart. People who pursue education or educate themselves through means of literature and personal development are smart. regular people are smart. not “celebrities”

  25. AMBER5ASH says:

    She looks like Grumpy Cat.

  26. Kosmos says:

I don’t find Miley interesting at all, particularly not in a photo shoot. And in the media world, even though we’re seeing a lot of her lately, shall I say WAY too much of her lately, I have never, ever thought she was very talented or interesting as a person or as an artist. Having PR people put your face out there to me does not necessarily equal real anything. So I’m already really sick of the tongue and her whole overall over-the-top demeanor.

  27. Susan says:

Well, one can only speculate why Juergen wouldn’t shoot her – but it’s refreshing to see it when someone does turn down the quick and “easy” Miley-buck. She is cute, but smart? Not only is she quite the opposite, but she’s proven herself – many, many times – to be crude, nasty, mean spirited, vulgar, manipulative and out right stupid! She delighted in her attempts to hurt others – that’s what really “sealed” it for me! She bragged about wives complaining about their husbands “lusting” after her VMA “performance,” she humiliated Amanda B. – for what? and then quite stupidly tried to do the same to Sinead O’C – who was honestly trying to offer well-intended wisdom and support! Laughingly, she bragged about “making history” with her raunchy VMA performance. (What little she knows of historical events makes that seem like a reasonable statement). I won’t watch or financially contribute to anything affiliated with this little sl**. She’s burnt too many bridges already for my taste!

    • Leila in wunderland says:

You’re decrying being ‘mean-spirited’…. while at the same time calling someone a slut, which furthers the misogynistic and violent notion that female human worth lies in sexual modesty and withholding oneself sexually. You’re promoting violence against our sex.
      Pot, meet kettle.

But you are right about her comments about Sinead O’Connor and Amanda Bynes- even though Sinead’s commentary was equally problematic with it’s whorephobia, it’s perpetuation of the virgin/whore dichotomy, and it’s implication that women need to dress conservatively in order for men to not commit sex crimes, no matter how well-intended her letter may have been. I’ve seen people deliver homophobic messages with supposed ‘good intentions’ too, but that doesn’t take the bigotry out of it. But other than the thing with Sinead, I haven’t seen any other examples of her being mean-spirited or ‘manipulative.’

  28. Jaded says:

Maybe I’m getting to the age where I stand on my front lawn and yell at kids to get off but she’s just the most utterly fatuous, stupid, ridiculous, tacky, vulgar, moronic person I can think of (besides Justin Bieber) to use as a celebrity for this ad campaign. It glorifies all that is vapid, sensationalistic and useless in this world. Bah humbug.
