Amy Adams attempts a retro look in Valentino at the Globes: budget or hot?

wenn20981493

I can feel all of the grandmothers getting ready to shout at me, but here goes: I think Amy Adams is one of the most consistently disappointing women on any given red carpet. Amy is always nominated for everything, because she works constantly and she’s one of the best actresses of her generation. But as a Fashion Girl, she kind of sucks. I feel like every year, we get our hopes up that this will be the year that Amy just kills it sartorially, and every year we’re disappointed.

For this year’s Globes, Amy wore this Valentino ensemble –she arrived on the red carpet with a cool cape thing, and I was hoping that she would own the sort of 1970s-Halston vibe (which is an homage to her American Hustle character), but she took the cape off quickly, possibly because someone told her about Lupita Nyong’o, I think. So what we were left with was half a look, and it was not the interesting half. Without the cape, it was just an ugly dress that didn’t support her girls and the two reds kind of clashed. Plus, her hair was kind of meh. I was glad that she finally won something though.

Mila Kunis was also there, for no real reason. I mean, she presented one of the first awards, but she was SO unmemorable. When I saw her on my list of ladies to cover, I couldn’t even remember what color she wore. It’s Gucci, by the way. Blah. I also don’t get the slicked-back hair – Mila usually has great hair, I don’t get why she was styled like this.

And here’s Helen Mirren, just because. Helen wore Jenny Packham – I always admire Helen’s commitment to wearing sleeves, but I’m not really feeling this gown. Let me really look at it though… huh. Okay, giving it another chance. I kind of want to mess with it though. I want the neckline to be tighter and I think the color should be a tad darker.

Ugh, I honestly think she’s a great actress but what is with this Asgardian get-up? I mean, really? With the coat too? What was her stylist thinking?

    • Florc says:

Can’t help, but love the coat. For so long Amy looked so innocent and pure. She’s been showing a more alluring side since AH.

  2. Lydia says:

Well, I really liked Amy’s dress. And her win as well. Go Amy!

    • Stef Leppard says:

I liked her dress too! Maybe it would have been better in another color though. And her face looks so beautiful. Is that a weird thing to say? She just looks gorgeous and glowing.

I hated Mila’s dress for some reason. It does nothing for her and she doesn’t seem to be having any fun.

    • Audrey says:

I love it too. I think she looked stunning in that dress

    • OhDear says:

      Me too. That cape!

    • gogoGorilla says:

I didn’t mind the dress, either. Hated the cape thing but otherwise I thought it was kind of fitting, given the role she played in AH. Plus, I love a deep V that doesn’t involve a ton of cleavage hanging out. She has the right body for it.

    • littlestar says:

I liked her dress too! Thought it had a strong 70s vibe, which I love. Her hair was pretty blah though, and the same with her makeup.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I like the dress as well. It really shows off her lovely skin and I think she looks great in that color. I like the light make up with it.

    • Sumodo1 says:

When you have skin like Amy Adams…you can wear a dress like that and nobody really sees it. Her hair was lovely.

  3. Esmom says:

I love those colors on Amy. I hadn’t seen the cape last night, I’m not sure what to think.

But yeah it’s hard to get a take on her “style.” Maybe because she’s so fresh-faced and sweet looking, that anything that’s edgy or mod or vixen-ish on her seems jarring to me.

  4. blue marie says:

    Helen looks lovely, great color.
    Mila is meh.
And I love Amy’s hair and top of the dress, but not the bottom.

    • Anna says:

Oh yes, probably my 2nd favorite hair of the night, after Lady Mary. Such a quirky, cute updo!

    • lana86 says:

agree about Helen and her dress! pleasure to look at!
Dark red is not Amy’s color, she looks washed out

    • V4Real says:

Yes Helen looks great. Amy’s dress is not bad.

In other news I guess we can squash the pregnancy rumors surrounding Mila.

And there weren’t any Timberlake/Biel sightings last night.

    • littlestar says:

From all of the pics I’ve seen of Mila last night, she had bitch face in every single one of them. Does anyone know why she was so miserable looking last night?

    • Mauibound says:

      Helen looks amazing

  5. bsh says:

Shut up! Helen Mirren is fab, as usual!

    • Nicolette says:

+1. She should sit all these other bitches down and give them all a lesson on style. She always knocks it out of the park as far as I’m concerned.

    • elisa says:

I agree! I love Helen. I also think that her dress is probably one of those that looks much more gorgeous in person than in pictures. The pattern of Helen’s dress must have looked stunning on the red carpet.

  6. Ice Maiden says:

It’s s nice dress, but Amy doesn’t have the va-va-voom to make it really stand out. She’s a very attractive woman, but in a ‘girl next door’ rather than screen siren sort of way. And the visible boob tape is unfortunate.

Helen is gorgeous, Mila is forgettable.

    • Eleonor says:

I think Nicole Kidman in her heydays (ten years ago circa) could have worked the hell out of that dress.

  7. Spooks says:

Amy doesn’t looks good, but she won. Yeeey.
I don’t think she always disappoints. The blue dress and the red dress she wore to the 2008 and 2011 Oscars were amazing.

  8. Anna says:

It’s too bad about Amy’s cape – without it the dress looks just sad and cheap, and I am not getting the retro vibe.

LOOOOVE Dame Hellen’s dress – not just appropriated, but such a pretty color, embroidery, and nice shape for her.

Not sure why Mila is getting so much hate on her outfit. I think she looked nice! And the execution of a metallic wasnt predictable.

    • littlestar says:

I liked Mila’s and Hellen’s dresses as well. I don’t understand why Mila looked so sour last night though?…..

  9. Sarah says:

Helen Mirren if flawless as usual. The color might be a bit to “springy” but she works it every time. I thought Amy was fine. Mila just doesn’t do it for me, but then again, she never does. I don’t get what all the hype is about her. When she isn’t styled she is simply not an attractive girl at all.

  10. Marianne says:

    Amy’s dress looked so cheap.

    I loved Mila’s dress though.

    • emmie_a says:

I thought Amy’s dress looked sort of cheap too. I like the cape but the dress by itself is totally underwhelming.

I hated Mila’s dress. It looks too matronly for her and it’s just too much dress on her petite body. Someone taller might pull it off but it just drags Mila down & it actually looked too heavy for her when she was walking.

  11. Kiddo says:

Amy Adams has that innocent girl next door face and she can never seem to pull off ‘sexy’, or avant garde, a la AnnE Hathaway. Helen Mirren, on the other hand, brings the va-va-voom. How old is she again? Hot damn, I’d like to look like that at her age.

    • A Different Kate says:

Did you see American Hustle? She can definitely pull off “sexy.” Her dress last night would’ve been better if she’d done her hair differently.

      • Kiddo says:

I have not seen it, maybe I will feel differently, but so far, she looks always looks virginaly chaste to me. Will go look for photos.

      • Kiddo says:

Still not seeing it. In the only photo I was able to find, she looked like Nicole Kidman, who has the same type of issue for me.

  12. Lori says:

MIlla looks terrible………..Ashton is sucking the hot right outta her.

  13. Sullivan says:

I liked Amy’s ’70s look. The cape was kick-ass, but maybe she wasn’t feeling it.

Helen looked great. What the dress lacked in style, was made-up for in color.

    Mila’s look was forgettable.

    • Mairead says:

It would be amazing if the colours worked better. It is possible that the lighting and flash is affecting the colour?

  14. Hannah says:

I don’t get all the fuzz about Helen Mirren’s style. I think she dresses quite old. She has this amazing figure and yet most often she’s clad in garish, old ladyish colours.

    • Sassy says:

Helen is old! And a wonderful example to all of us old broads as to how to dress tastefully as we age, and that white hair can be fun, fun, fun with the correct cut!

As for Amy Adams, as I watched yesterday when Ryan Seacrest was interviewing her my thoughts were: She needs stronger makeup, her hair is ridiculous and not attractive, the top of the dress was doing her no favors. Her bust looked smashed. It was a rather dowdy look.

    • Suze says:

Well, what age would you want her to dress?

  15. smee says:

ITA – those colors clash and the dress has absolutely no fit to it. Not flattering. The matching cape didn’t help. Lupita was the only one wearing a cape the right way anyhooooooo

  16. capepopsie says:

Hellen looks fabulous as always! Gracefull and aging beautifully.

  17. minime says:

I think you girls here at Celebitchy don’t really like the “clashing colors” style. I actually love it! I think it could only improve by having better support around the chest. Still, I guess it fits well to her and she looks comfortable on it, what is always half the work on pulling up a style.

Helen Mirren looks amazing! The hair is flawless. She’s such a class act.

  18. Kristen says:

I thought Amy’s hair looked amazing.

  19. tifzlan says:

I love Helen Mirren’s dress. The color just pops off her pale skin. She looks gorgeous!

  20. serena says:

I’m happy for Amy, she deserved it! As for her style.. yeah, it kind of sucks, but I like this event’s make-up and hair! Basically from the neck down is a no-no! lol

    • Mairead says:

I agree – love her work. She’s always pretty much the best thing about a film, with JLaw and Jeremy Renner’s magnificent hair in AH being possible exceptions.

(We won’t talk about ‘Leap Year’ which was abominable sh1te!)

  21. Dani says:

I actually think Amy was one of the best dressed last night. She’s working it.

  22. Snazzy says:

Helen looks fab, I actually really like the neckline, and I find it goes great with the hair. The colour could have been darker, but this lighter colour is amazing as well.

BTW she totally deserves he own post, always …

  23. Reid05 says:

I actually really liked Amy’s look. It was minimal and streamlined, and personally I’m so tired of seeing a bunch if strapless sweetheart neckline ball gowns. Also, her face was just glowing and beautiful.
Mila is also beautiful but we’ve seen her in basically this same look a million times.
Helen looks amazing as usual and don’t mind the color at all.

  24. GiGi says:

I kind of thought Amy’s look was a bit on the nose considering the movie for which she was nominated. Meh.

  25. OriginallyBlue says:

    Helen and Amy!

  26. Renee says:

UGH, I can’t stand Amy Adams!!!!!!!!! She is SO BORING.

I also can’t stand Mila Kunis, I just want to slap the smug off her face. (But I do like the gun metal color on her, that tone is really flattering on her.

Helen Mirren’s dress is not good, the color is off and there’s something frumpy about it but she looks so beautiful and sexy and confident that she makes it work. It’s a real talent to be able to do that.

  27. K says:

    I thought Amy looked fantastic.

  28. kibbles says:

The dress only looks good with the cape. It looks cheap without the cape because her top is overexposed. She needs to cover her breasts or her arms. The cape really made the dress look elegant in a 1970s style. Too bad she took it off!

    • lunchcoma says:

Agreed. I didn’t see it with the cape until this morning, and only now does the look make sense to me. When I saw it on the red carpet it looked unfinished and like it didn’t match. The cape really pulled it together.

  29. Quinn says:

Amy’s hair is adorable…Mila is not aging well.

  30. Tig says:

I wasn’t too crazy about Amy’s dress, and thought the choice of a very low pendent necklace wasn’t the smartest either. Just so glad she won!

I loved Mila K’s dress, and would have liked HM’s dress more in a different color.

  31. flutters says:

I actually like Amy’s dress, probably mostly for the color. Wish she’d done something more interesting with her hair though.

Helen Mirren looks fine. I love her hair & the color of the dress is not spectacular but perfectly nice.

  32. salamanca says:

Amy’s dress is kind of meh, especially for best actress. And I have to ask/say this: did she have her nose done? If so, it looks like Pinokios’ woodden nose.

  33. Axis2ClusterB says:

I actually really like Amy’s dress, but I wish it was either all one color or different shades of blue.

  34. GIRLFACE says:

Amy looks beautiful! Mimas dress is not good especially with the slicked helmet hair. Helen looks good too, her dress fits her very well.

  35. lucy2 says:

I liked Amy’s hair and she looked gorgeous, but I’m not sure on the dress. I kind of like the idea, but the top looks too skimpy. She’s not a fashionista but she’s worn some pretty stuff in the past.
Mila’s was OK, but she did look pretty miserable.
    Helen always looks great.

  36. Renee says:

Amy seems determined to show off her prematurely sagging and not attractive boobs at every opportunity-just as she did in American Hustle. Sup with that?

I noticed that there is another Renee on here! Sup with that???

  37. The Original G says:

Amy Adams has an amazing acting career and has played some of the best roles for women in the past decade.. Getting dolled up like JLO is not going to assist her continuing that, at all.

I also wish that the red carpet would stop being such a merchandizing event. When a star stand there and says ” My dress is Prada, my shoes are Choo, mye blah blah blah, ” I think it’s taken something away from the mystery of movie stars and their cachet as artists.

  38. shellybean says:

I love 70s fashion, and I love Amy’s dress. It was nice to see her not dressed like a princess for once.

  39. GIRLFACE says:

I don’t think her boobs are unattractive at all !and I don’t think most men would either. My husband thinks she’s pretty hot. They look natural. I would rather see some natural boobage on the red carpet than some sky high implant seams any day. I think it’s a good thing that overtly round frisbees and boyant flotation devices are out of style and reserved for porn where they belong. Round implants are so 10 years ago, please. She looks great and she has good boobs. Thankfully chin grazers are out of style and so is mile high mile wide cleavage

    • MrsBPitt says:

I agree…unfortunately, soooooo many women are getting implants, I think people forget what, honest-to-God, real breasts look like…

  40. Bread and Circuses says:

I thought Helen Mirren looked better than any of them! Love that colour and love how pretty the cut of the gown is on her.

    • Swan Lake says:

I saw enough of Amy’s girls in American Hustle, and I hated her character. Sorry, but I don’t get her appeal.

  41. Alexa says:

Amy looked beautiful. And FINALLY – I think Helen Mirren looks good. (I never understood all the fuss about her.) I like her dress and LOVE her fresh, couture hairstyle. Yes – Helen Mirren looked HOT last night (for once, imo).

  42. The Voice says:

Can’t stand the 70s so for me Amy Adams’ dress was a miss. Did anyone else notice that she just snubbed Robert Downy Jr when she accepted her award? Most of the time the winner hugs/kisses the presenter. She didn’t even look at him and just snatched the Golden Globe from his hands. “Gimme that!” Whoa. Helen Mirren looks amazing, as always.

  43. Maureen says:

I’m obviously in the minority here b/c I thought Amy’s performance in AH was dreadful. Her forced sexy act was embarrassing — like being sexy isn’t second nature to her so she had to force it, and her English accent was just terrible. I was actually really turned off of her as an actress after seeing that movie. I’m not likely to seek her out in a movie again.

    • Kiddo says:

I haven’t seen American Hustle, probably won’t in the theater, but I agree that Amy Adams has zero sex appeal. Someone up-thread thought she worked it in the movie, I guess I’ll wait to see it for myself.

The movie that I really didn’t like her in was the one about the food blogger and Julia Child. The character was played so annoying by her, I wasn’t cheering on the protagonist and couldn’t wait for the film to end. It went on FOREVER, except for the scenes with Meryl Streep.

      • Maureen says:

        @Kiddo

She did work it in the movie. She worked it MAJOR. Boobs everywhere,, preening, sashay-ing, come hither looks. The problem is that she HAD to “work it” because it doesn’t come naturally to her at all. There were times when I wanted to look away from the screen because I was having second-hand embarrassment. I suppose it didn’t help that I hated her character, too. I just don’t think she’s a good actress. I think she’s a one-trick pony. She does one thing very well and that’s what she should stick to. She seems really nice as a person. She’s always so professional in interviews, does a fantastic job of selling her movies, and always says the most wonderful things about her colleagues.

    • Mairead says:

That’s the thing. The accent isn’t meant to be accurate, just close enough to fool, initially anyway, people who didn’t know any better. Y’know the types that thought Dick van Dyke did an awesome Mockney accent 10 years previously.

@Kiddo. I thought the opposite. Sure Julie was an annoying character, but Amy was great as her. Now I know this is sacrilege here, however I thought Meryl gave a horrible caricature of Julia Child. Stanley Tucci and Jane Lynch were a godsend in those scenes to me. Now I never saw Julia Child in the past (not from the US), but from the programmes I’ve seen on the net, the accent was dire.

      • Kiddo says:

@Mairead , maybe you are right, maybe she was supposed to play a character so earnest and dull that she drove everyone nuts. I have no idea. It did make watching the film burdensome. The funny thing about Julia Child (she is in reruns/classic shows with Jacques Pépin on the Create channel), is that she is from the US, so listening to her actual accent is confusing, it’s not really Brit, but I’m guessing some type of old finishing school? Do you think she (Meryl) didn’t do Julia well, as in her odd accent, or do you think that Julia didn’t sound like she had the English accent down?

I thought Amy Adams was excellent in ‘Junebug’. But that’s all that is standing out in my mind right now.

      • Mairead says:

I adored Amy in Junebug!! The film itself was middling as it was being touted as a serious new role for that bloke from The OC. it was the first thing I saw her in and I thought she was so luminous. At the time I did actually think she was Isla Fisher, who in my mind was always Shannon from Home & Away. 😳

Sorry I need to clarify: the English accent I was referring to was Amy Adam’s character’s (following me?) cod-posh accent in American Hustle.

Meryl got Child’s accent right to my ears – as you said that moneyed, well-educated upper-middle class accent that you don’t really hear on tv anymore. It was just the voice itself sounded like a caricature- too high and too much like a comedy man-putting-on-a-falsetto. Compare it with Michael Douglas who sounded uncannily like Liberace. As I said being IrishI didn’t grow up watching her so it is likely Child’s voice was higher when she was younger.

I got a chance to watch those episodes with Jacques Pépin last year. They were so lovely, like snuggling into a warm duvet with a cup of hot chocolate 🙂

      • Kiddo says:

I haven’t seen AH, I’m waiting for it to stream. It seems like a mash-up remake, or a composite of characters borrowed from Good fellows and other classic movies, with a slightly different plot.

I love Pépin. He is still doing shows and is a gazillion times better than most offerings on the Food Network.

  44. Sara says:

Awww. I think you are being too hard on Amy. She looks great, her hair and makeup are lovely. It’s not the best dress but it’s not super ugly. Anyway she is a great actress. I just loved her in American Hustle. Mila looks lovely as well but I can’t think of a movie she was good in since Black Swan…

  45. Kelly says:

    I think Amy looks great!!

  46. Fan says:

I like Amy, she looks good and toned. I feel sorry for Mila. Ashton did not go with her to the Globe. Not fair, because when he was married to Demi he would go with Demi to almost any functions.

    • ataylor says:

When Mila was on the red carpet, Asston was literally walking out of a Starbucks in WeHo. I got a phone call from a buddy of mine asking me to remind him when the Golden Globes would be on because he assumed that they would go together since Mila and AK are now PDAing anytime, everywhere now that he’s divorced. He was obviously wrong.

  47. whocares? says:

she’s into her role… and looks FABULOUS!

  48. Anna Scott says:

Helen Mirren looks better than women half her age

  49. GByeGirl says:

Amy Adam’s dress is awesome. Her girls don’t need any support (yet). Go braless while you can! Mila was meh. Helen looked fantastic.

  50. adrien says:

Her face looks different. She looks more like Heidi Klum than Isla Fisher/ Kristine Wiig.
