Sofia Vergara and the ladies of Modern Family at the SAGs: same old or gorgeous?

When people who are just casual gossip consumers see Sofia Vergara on the red carpet, they link “holy crap she looks amazing,” and she does. Sofia Vergara knocks it out of the park, almost the same way, in every gown. She practically wears the same gown for every awards ceremony: sweetheart neckline, full skirt, solid color fabric or solid color sequins. It’s hard to shade Sofia Vergara for looking gorgeous, but I would just love to see her mix it up. This silver Donna Karan looks similar to her Golden Globes after party Zac Posen gown. Still, I feel petty for pointing it out when she looks this good.

As much as Sofia stays in her comfort zone, her co-star and friend, Julie Bowen, mixes it up. Julie was in this fashion-forward Carolina Hererra, with a pointed burnt orange bustline, visible stitching, and a line-print skirt. I thought this gown was the perfect mix of modern and classic. It was interesting without being strange. Julie told Giuliana Rancic that her dress was “gorgeous but it’s funky,” and Giuliana of course said she loved it. I’m surprised this is Hererra, because I remember her designs on Renee Zellweger for years, and Renee’s dresses were very staid. Maybe that was just Zellweger’s taste.

Ariel Winter, 15, was in blue white and black Badgley Mischka. I’m so sorry to say this about such a young girl, but the first thing I noticed were her boobs! When Modern Family won for comedy ensemble (the fourth year in a row!), Bowen started off their acceptance speech by saying “we’re going to make Sofia talk because America loves her and her boobs.” When she said that I got confused about whom she was referring to, because Bowen was standing right next to Ariel Winter. I’m sorry! And I’m sorry to my friends who have teenage daughters.

Oh, and I found it ridiculous when Sofia said “I can’t barely speak English” during her speech. She needs to lose that shtick. They should have let Ty Burrell do the honors since he gave such an awesome funny speech when he finally won for male actor in a comedy series.

Sarah Hyland, 23, was in a kind of boring bell-shaped pale Pamela Roland gown. There were a lot of neutral solids on the red carpet last night, and Bedhead will be doing more for you shortly. At least Hyland’s styling was much better than we saw at the Globes, where she had giant dark eyebrows. At the SAGs, she had lovely sideswept hair and flattering makeup.

I didnt really like any of their dresses really. I kind of like Ariel’s….but yes I found it a bit odd that her boobs were so pushed up considering she’s only 15.

    • Falula says:

Me, too! I just said to my husband that I think it’s irresponsible for stylists to dress teenaged girls this way. I wouldn’t want her to be ashamed of her body and would never say that she shouldn’t feel comfortable in her skin, but this dress in particular looks like it is designed to put her chest on display. I get that she is large-busted naturally so they are going to be there no matter what, but I feel icky about this dress.

      • Tig says:

I concur with you, but be warned, quite a few below disagree. I could readily sympathize if she’s having to buy from a store, but certainly someone could have made her a dress that flattered her young figure w/o this corsetting effect- it’s like she stepped off “The Tudors”.

  2. Katiekat says:

Is the stitching coming apart on Julie’s corset/bust? Or just a detail?

  3. lisa2 says:

Sarah H. wins. I don’t like Sofia’s dress and Julie doesn’t have the body type to pull that dress off. I love Ariel’s dress. Not on her.. and yes the boob situation is wrong. She needs a different cut of dress to accommodate her. But I love that print pattern.

    • Zapatos says:

The dress is really interesting, but it’s making her torso looks square. Not fat, of course, but it obscures any waist definition.

  4. Frenzy says:

Sofia’s too pageant-like and Ariel’s gown is inappropriate for 15!

  5. TheCountess says:

Not crazy about *any* of them. And yes, Sofia’s Charo shtick is boring beyond belief.

  6. bns says:

    Love Julie Bowen’s dress.

    Ariel Winter’s isn’t bad, either.

  7. Sullivan says:

Sara looks cute. I think she and her stylist have accepted that she can’t pull-off the runway model styling.

Sofia knows what works for her. Va-va-voom is her red carpet look. She’ll probably do this well into her geriatric years.

    • Kellie says:

They both looked lovely. Julie Bowen was a disaster, not even including the dress falling apart. And Ariel looks far beyond. 15.

  8. T. Fanty Fan says:

Sofia seems to be taking her hair back to blonde and I like it

  9. SonjaMarmeladova says:

Sofia is such a beautiful women, but she looks so tacky every frickin time. And she needs to go back to dark brown hair. Quickly.
Julie is so pretty and she looks great.

    • Zadie says:

Every time I see her, I think TACKY TACKY TACKY. And please, please ditch the blonde. Her complexion is too dark for blonde hair.

    • V4real says:

She’s a natural blonde. You guys sound worse than the people who told her if she wanted to be a working Latina in show business she needed to look more like one and dye her natural blonde hair dark.
Her complexion is too dark for blonde hair, wow

      • hunter says:

Just because it’s her natural shade doesn’t mean it looks good. Not everything we are born with actually “looks good,” that’s just life.

      • Mika says:

Hunter : I think it’s because she’s so tan now. When she was younger, her complexion was paler, so maybe that’s why blonde hair doesn’t seem to suit her anymore.

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

I know she’s a natural blonde and I don’t really understand what you’re saying. The fact that she’s a Latina has nothing to do with it Jessica Alba is also a Latina and she looks good blonde. I doubt anyone would look good with this weird yellow-brown-blonde colour.

      • V4real says:

Maybe you need to read @Zadie’s comment. I would have said maybe she needs to go back to her original shade of blonde and not this shade. I wouldn’t say she needs to go back to dark brown .
Anyways I like that she’s not afraid to go back blonde.

  10. Kiddo says:

Julie Bowen’s dress would have worked on a darker complected woman. The colors don’t flatter her. And the cut of the dress flattens her out and diminishes any waistline. The concept is interesting in a 70’s kind of way, but I don’t think it enhanced her physical assets. But I give her credit for trying something different.

  11. Sisi says:

Sofia’s boobs look odd in this dress, the corset must have a unflattering shape or something, because normally the form fitting shape of her dresses is spot on. Sarah Hyland looks great, vast inprovement from the Globes look.

    • Belle Epoch says:

I actually like the top of her dress because she is downplaying her boobage, and everything is under control if she has to bend over or raise her arms. With a figure like that she could make the whole event just about her boobs!

  12. Renee says:

I CANNOT stand Sofia Vergara and agree with the poster above that she needs to lose her shtick. But I think that she looks amazing, the top of her dress looks like there is a minimizer in it. I don’t know how I feel about her lighter hair, even though I’ve read that her natural hair color is blonde. But now that I think of it, when I see pictures of her modeling in Colombia her hair is usually darker. A necklace with stronger greens would have helped to set it off from the dress.

This is the first time that I’ve thought that Julie Bowen looks good. That dress looks awesome on her. Mazel Tov.

The little girl in the blue dress…I guess she shouldn’t be showing her chesticles like that. I guess the effect is not too bad because the rest of the dress is flowy and the pattern is spring-like. Where was her mother when she was leaving the house?

    • Ariel’s mom is in the middle of a custody battle for her (I don’t know if she dropped it or not)—but basically what Ariel (and Ariel’s older sister) is alleging is that the mom is abusive, etc. So Ariel’s guardian is her older sister, who’s in her late twenties/early thirties. I agree the dress was inappropriate, because it makes her look WAY older than she really is—I would hate to be the guy who didn’t really know who she was and hit on a 15 year old-I’d feel like a perv.

    • Boxy Lady says:

I feel badly for her, honestly. I developed early like she did but it was the 90s and I wore a lot of big, plaid shirts to cover them up. Even wearing a turtleneck, which doesn’t show any skin, looked kind of obscene! The size of her bust probably doesn’t leave her with a lot of formal dress options. Not in today’s fashion world, anyway.

      • Yvette says:

+1 man, she doesn’t look inappropriate if the only thing people are up in arms about is her boobs. What the hell is she meant to do with them??

I developed early too, and it sexualises you before you’re really ready for it, but u can’t exactly strap them down.

Give her a break, she’s got big boobs, and apart from them, I think it’s a totally age appropriate look.

  13. MollyB says:

I feel bad for Ariel. Wasn’t one of the reasons she wanted to get away from her mom is that she felt her mom was inappropriately sexualizing her too young? And then for her TV mom to make a comment about the nation’s fascination with her breasts in such a public forum? She’s only 15. Ewww.

    • SW says:

I don’t think the boob comment was for Ariel, it was for Sofia. When your boobs are that big, it gets hard to hid em in a nice gown without it looking odd, even if you’re only 15!

  14. Lark says:

Sofia looks good…I think the thing is that she has a Jessica Rabbit shaped body, and she knows what looks good on her and what doesn’t…For example, she would look odd wearing a Rooney Mara avant-garde type of look.

    • Nicolette says:

Agree. She knows how to work her assets to her advantage. She does need to lose the ‘I can’t speak english’ bit already. I picture her voice being completely different off camera.

  15. Sprink says:

There is absolutely nothing inappropriate about Ariel Winter’s dress. She looks gorgeous, the cut flatters her figure, the colour is beautiful on her.

If her breasts weren’t properly supported (they aren’t ‘pushed up’, just large) she’d have no waist showing and would look dumpy as hell.

Of all the people to rag on, back off this young woman and her natural figure.

  16. Sprink says:

Also, if the bodice were cut higher it would double her size and all the fat joke claws would come out. It’s incredibly difficult to dress this kind of figure without people terming it too sexy, especially for a 15-year-old girl. Let. Her. Be.

  17. Tig says:

I liked that Sophia V’s dress and the necklace were almost an identical match- and the necklace was so unique.

It seems like Ariel and Abigail B have the same issue- but it’s doubly icky to see a 15 yr old’s cleavage so prominently on display. It really is disturbing that the “team” that puts this look together isn’t more sensitive to that fact.

  18. serena says:

I love Ty Burrell!! So glad they won!
Anyway first, I like Sofia but she has to stop with the ‘accent’ and ‘can’t speak english’-things and I don’t find blonde hair flattering on her, she looks better with brown hair in my opinion (still, loved this dress).

As for the others.. well, as usual Julie Bowen can’t dress herself and Sarah Hyland has an eybrows problem..

  19. rep says:

Tired of Sofia, time for her to stop. Plus she goes way too hard at every awards after party with the look at me, look at me routine.

  20. Zapatos says:

In most of the pics I saw last night, Ariel had a really bad case of baby heads in that dress. There was way too much pushing in and lifting in the bust.

Sarah’s dress feels a little too young and precious for her.

  21. Zbornak Syndrome says:

I always love Sofia’s lipstick shades! They always complement her coloring well.

  22. Pri says:

You’re right, Sofia Vergara needs t change it up. I’m so so bored of seeing the same thing from her. JUlie Bowen looks amazing. Her dress looks different and interesting, like if I were to meet her in there I would stop and ask her who’s it from and surely complement her choice… Ariel Winter’s dress is nice but she should have chosen something different – atleast until she is like,18? And I don’t know why Sarah Hyland’s dress and make up depress me…

  23. Zbornak Syndrome says:

Julie Bowen looks like an Ikea lamp shade.

    • TheOriginalTiffany says:

When I look at her all I see is c3po. I can’t be the only one.

I am not loving Sofia’s look. Her face is starting to look jacked to me. Like obvious nasal labial lines of filler. Same old dress again.

  24. shellybean says:

I thought Sofia looked terrible (for Sofia, so I mean, she still looked good because she’s gorgeous, but…). I don’t like her makeup here or even the hair. I think it ages her. It all looks so “done”. And the fit of that silver dress seems off in the bust area. It looked really weird on-camera. Plus it looked like silver puked all over her.

  25. Hootysgram says:

Love that show…and all the gals on it…but not one of them really impressed with their gown choices…Sophia is so darn pretty…and so is Julie but her dress looks like a science project gone awry….Love them both though…

  26. rep says:

That’s it Shellyb, she looked done, and she looks this way all the time.

  27. rep says:

    And those eyebrows…..

  28. Tsarina says:

Same old same old for Sophia. She tends to want to look like a Vegas showgirl. She could do much better. She really is pigeon-holing herself into one look and it will have ramifications: we are viewed the way we present ourselves (like it or not).

And all the dresses were terrible. ALL of them.

  29. Megan says:

I loved Julie’s dress it was forward, different and fun. Her jewelry was great too.

I hated Sophia’s honest to God she wears the same thing all the time, she dresses like a beauty pageant contestant and its boring, played out and frankly uninteresting. Every time she speaks I like her less, go watch the first season of Modern Family she speaks perfect English and she isn’t hard to understand at all. Yes she has an accent but not like this fake shtick she is doing now. They should have had Ty or any of the guys speak, Ty’s speech was great and so have all the others when they win Emmys.

I thought Ariel looked really nice and very age appropriate.

  30. Az says:

My favorite Sarah Hyland moment ever was when she was on Fashion Police and shaded Lea Michele’s pose-harding. It was so freaking fantastic and just I just about died laughing at it. I find it really strange when someone lives in the States and speaks English for so many years and still has an accent. Probably because I have and I don’t. I feel like it’s a schitck at this point with Sofia and it needs to stop.

    • paranormalgirl says:

My accent is still there, but it’s fairly light now. But when I am mad or really passionate about something, I sound like I just got here!

  31. rep says:

I cant stand to hear her talk. She has a phoney Spanish accent at this point. Ha ha ha ha ha.

  32. Duchess of Corolla says:

Ariel has really filled out recently. It is probably hard to find something to wear that gives her support, yet is age-appropriate.

  33. lucy2 says:

I like Ariel’s dress the best, the print is very pretty.
I’m surprised how different Sarah looks without the heavier eye makeup. I wonder why she’s switching over to a more minimal look?
Julie’s…eh. She often picks strange things, so this isn’t her worst, but I don’t love it.
Sofia’s dress is pretty, but a bit much on her. She has such strong features and often big jewelry, a simpler dress might have been better. I also agree that she looks better with darker hair.

  34. LAK says:

Sarah Hyland still has giant eyebrows which do nothing for her face. The difference is this time her hairstyle is flattering as opposed to GG.

  35. Irishae says:

I think Julie looked terrible, per usual. Sofia wore the same thing she always does (though I’ve noticed we’ve seen less mermaid gowns). Lately Sarah’s style has been juvenile and too boring, her look here is a great example of that. That leaves Ariel, who I believe looked the best overall out of the bunch. At 15, larger breasts can make anything look inappropriate unless you’re wearing a sweatshirt. I don’t find her outfit “sexual” at all.

  36. Cro-girl says:

I thought they all looked good! Tough crowd.

  37. DianeP says:

    Where was Lily?

  38. Asdfg says:

Sophia isn’t the only celebrity to wear the same style of dresses for red carpet appearances. A lot of celebrities do this.

  39. SG says:

How come no one else noticed Julie Bowen’s face? I don’t think it’s always lilting to the side like that – her mouth and eye are drooping noticeably. It looks to me as though she went in for some pre-awards ceremony Botox that didn’t take very well, or hit a nerve. Very strange.

  40. Thunderthighs says:

Tried watching Modern Family and for some reason I couldn’t get past the first episode. I have a season 1 to 3 pack but never got beyond the first ten minutes of the first episode.
Plus, Sofia and her accent make me really, really tired. That said, she looks lovely here. Same ‘ol, same ‘ol but she looks good. And speaking as a large breasted woman, yep, there’s nothing you can put on, except maybe a sack, that will not look overly sexual. 🙁 I do love Julie’s look though.

  41. Jessica says:

Sofia annoys me so much with her over-the-top (fake) shtick. She didn’t always have that ridiculous accent. She had an accent, obviously, but it wasn’t as bad before as it is now. She really needs to cool it. We get it, you have boobs and you’re from Colombia, calm down. You can tell she really loves being famous, too. And she thinks she really deserves the awards and is disappointed when she doesn’t win. I’ve only seen a few clips of Sofia on MF, but the clips I saw were not funny at all, and you could tell they were meant to be. She’s really just not that funny.

  42. Sophie says:

Sofia: best she’a looked all year.

Julie: shame about the busted stitches.

Ariel: beautiful dress, beautiful girl. I’m sure they didn’t mean for the cleavage to be so out there.

Sarah: couldn’t be any more boring.

  43. Aly says:

Is it just me or does Julie Bowen look skinnier every time she shows up to an award show? It’s startling really, and looks pretty unhealthy. She has always been thin but now it seems too much. All bones. Hope she’s ok..

Also, I don’t care how thick her accent is, Sofia Vergara is so beautiful it’s ridiculous. She’s got the sickest body, it’s funny to see some women try to say she shouldn’t show it off. Work it girl!

  44. Helvetica says:

Julie’s dress is great. It’s very imaginative and I love the geometric/creativeness/not boring aspect of it.

Sofia pretty much always wears the same thing. She is a beauty and her hair and necklace are lovely.
