Cate Blanchett in sparkly Givenchy at the AACTA Awards: fantastic or tragic?

Here are some photos from the AACTA Awards in Sydney, Australia yesterday (today? No, yesterday, that’s right). Obviously… Cate Blanchett. Goddess. Perfection. Lovely. Pale. Fantastic. Amazing. Gorgeous. Aspirational. She’s wearing Givenchy, which isn’t my favorite, nor do I think it’s particularly flattering, but still… a mediocre dress (designed by Kanye West’s BFF) on Cate Blanchett is still WAY better than almost everything else. I didn’t even know she had that kind of cleavage – I always thought she was rather small-breasted. Will investigate.

While I’m studying her boobs, take a look at these close-ups of her face. Note the natural crow’s feet and laugh lines, note the natural nose crinkles. And it works. She’s perfect and ridiculously beautiful. I even love her rock n’ roll hair. PS… I love her for that shade of lipstick.

I’m also including some photos of CB’s former crush Sam Worthington and his current girlfriend Lara Bingle (I think she just looks pregnant, I don’t think she IS pregnant), Delta Goodrem (in Michael Costello) and Geoffrey Rush (they’re not dating or anything, they just posed together for fun) and little Bindi Irwin.

Gorgeous. Fun. Unexpected. A total win!

    • Holly says:

Totally agree! When I saw this the other day (and all of the close-ups), I thought simply: sheer perfection. How can someone be so talented, so unique and so lacking in pretention?

And how does she manage to find such unexpected looks year after year after year…? I think she’s going to be the next Meryl Streep (sorry Julia!), I really do!

    • Julia says:

      +1,000

  2. Ice Maiden says:

This is gorgeous. Cate rarely goes for overtly sexy looks, so this is a nice surprise. These dresses always have the potential to look tacky. But not on Cate. She is immune to all things tacky.

  3. Kristen says:

Cate is absurdly gorgeous. And i love that she’s aging naturally. i don’t love the top of that dress, but the skirt is beautiful and interesting. I can’t believe how old Bindi Irwin is!

  4. Liv says:

Sam Worthington’s girlfriend seems so super famewhorey, unbelievable! It surprises me again and again that many men are not able to see that.

    • LadySlippers says:

I don’t wonder if they see it and just don’t care.

    • Penny says:

She’s the closest thing Australia has to a Kardashian, but without the business savvy. Sam knows exactly what she is, everyone does.

      • Belly says:

Yep, she got her ‘notoriety’ by blatantly pursuing and/or shagging *attached* high profile sportsmen.
She’s a complete famewhore, and a bit of a slag too. IMO.

    • Kali says:

Co-sign on Penny’s “Kardashianesque” descriptor. She started out in an Aussie tourism ad being the hot chick in a bikini and her tagline was “so where the bl00dy he11 are ya?”

    • allons-y alonso says:

Ugh. That’s because she is. Luckily, her t.v show ‘Being Lara bingle’ had such low ratings it was cancelled after a few episodes.

      • Aisha says:

Hahaha, I remember that show! I don’t know who thought that was a good idea, she has no discernible talents and isn’t funny, interesting or charming… So yeah exactly like the Kardashians.

  5. AlbC says:

Can we haz some pictures of Elizabeth Debicki added pretty please? (won best supporting actress for Gatsby and is sooooo an heir to Blanchett)eir to B

  6. Hannah says:

Don’t like Cate’s dress. It looks like there’s a part missing in the middle. It would’ve looked better with the top part in a V-shape.

Lara Bingle: Christ, what a… eh… look!

  7. lucy2 says:

I don’t love the top part, but overall that’s a great dress on her. The fabric is sort of mesmerizing.

  8. Kali says:

This is quite rock n roll for her, I love it! Fun colours too, not the usual ice goddess colours/look that she does. I do like her Armani looks though, there’s a reason she’s such a good fit with that brand (that Si print ad? Divine….)

  9. paola says:

Oh my god she is perfection. Love her face, her eyes and her teeth as well!
Lovely Bindi Irwin is a lovely teenager now.
    how old is she now?
Aussie is striking again! Good for them

  10. We Are All Made of Stars says:

Wow, I hope to God that if I ever wake up and see that Laura Bingle lady standing over me that I have tons of garlic and a bunch of crosses on hand. The demonic gaze, the white skin, the dress, just everything.

I am surprised everyone likes Cate Blanchett’s dress. It kind of reminds me of something that you’d dig out of a theatrical costume closet from a production of Xanadu that was done in the 70s. Don’t. like. it.

  11. Lark says:

She’s so beautiful. And I love Geoffrey Rush…I was surprised at how much I liked the Book Thief. I wonder why he doesn’t do more movies?

    • Penny says:

He’s always done a lot of theatre and these days quite a bit of voice work, so he’s probably only available to film something a couple of months out of each year.

      • Lark says:

That’s awesome, lucky people who get to see him on stage. I’ve heard he’s a lovely guy, I know someone who worked on the Peter Sellers film he did and had nothing but good things to say about him.

  12. Ag says:

    Perfection. That’s all I’ve got.

  13. alexc says:

She is magnificent – sexiest woman alive and a stupendous talent.

  14. Dawn says:

I thin she looks great! Nice hair, nice makeup and a wonderfully fun dress. What more could one ask for?

  15. Cecilia says:

Fabulous!! Gorgeous woman — beautiful dress. Cate never disappoints.

  16. Grant says:

    I flove Cate’s dress.

  17. Maum says:

Love Cate but am I right in thinking that she’s botoxed her forehead? I noticed during her acceptance speech at the Globes and when I saw the close up of her laughing I was struck at the contrast between the (cute) crinkle nose wrinkles and the smooth forehead.

Lara Bingle’s cheeks disturb the hell out of me. They look like they’re trying to slip down her face.
    Why is he with her???

  18. Vanessa says:

I love looking at the dresses, but one thing I noticed was that (when viewing the award show gowns) they weren’t appropriate for my 3-year old to look at with me. She wanted to see the “princesses”, but we came to the conclusion that all their dresses were “broken and missing parts”… *sigh*… too much cleavage and too many cutouts. Maybe we can have more fashion posts with real princesses? They dress conservatively. 🙂

    • Jade says:

Sit your 3 year old down with a Disney princess movie maybe, not a gossip site… Or awards show photos.

(Sanctimommy of the day you are)

  19. Olive says:

Cate is too gorgeous. Is it just me or does she and Anna Torv (from Fringe) look a bit alike? I don’t know why but I totally remembered Anna while looking at these pictures

  20. Sumodo1 says:

Cate is a wonder. She is so beautiful that she outshines a lousy dress. THAT, friends, is beauty.

  21. IceQueen says:

    Kate is perfect!

  22. LilyT says:

She is perfection. Nothing else to be said.

  23. poof says:

    Love Cate!

  24. A Fan says:

Feeling lots of love here…great dress – love the style, love the colours, love the sparkles…

[…especially love that there’s no blocks of cement on her feet…]
