Robert Pattinson ‘doesn’t want to be famous anymore’, might go back to school

FFN_Pattinson_Robert_BJJ_120213_51277018

Have you missed Robert Pattinson? I have. I feel like there hasn’t been any good gossip about him in months and months. Granted, he spent much of last fall knee-deep in Hollywood starlets, but I think he spent Christmas in England and I have absolutely no idea where he is these days. Is he still in London? Did he come back to LA? I don’t know. But he has been keeping it largely undercover lately, and Radar says that it’s all part of a new, quieter, not-chasing-fame Sparkles.

Sorry, Twihards: Twilight star Robert Pattinson “doesn’t want to be famous anymore,” and hopes to move behind the camera, a friend of the actor tells Radaronline.com exclusively.

The very private movie hunk who shot to fame along with his co-star and former girlfriend, Kristen Stewart is growing tired of the constant adoration from millions of fans, says the source.

“The cost of fame is the thing he and Kristen used to complain about all day and that hasn’t changed at all for him,” Pattinson’s pal explains.

So now, the British-born actor, 27, “is looking at a whole new approach to his future and is even considering going to theater school to focus more on getting behind the camera,” the source claims. “Rob’s been talking to a lot of independent filmmakers, and the last thing he wants to do is act in another blockbuster. He would like to direct a movie one day.”

Pattinson’s weariness with his fame as vampire Edward Cullen came through last year in an interview with Germany’s Interview magazine. The actor appeared to diss members of his extensive fandom when he sighed, “Twilight has its own parallel world, its own fan culture that has been forming on the net since day one — and in an intense way that has never existed before. Sometimes I ask myself what these masses of people do the whole day,” he said. “They sit in front of their computers and comment on anything having even remotely to do with Twilight.”

The media scrutiny only grew more intense after Stewart cheated on him in 2012, the source notes.

“Rob really can’t stand being famous, even though he loves his job,” says the friend. “I’m sure all the hell he went through with Kristen was the final straw for him as far as fame is concerned.”

[From Radar]

Well, I don’t think Kristen was the “final straw” actually. Because after their break-up and subsequent on-and-off nonsense that went down for months, Rob was partying a lot and as I said, hooking up with a steady stream of starlets, many of whom were in the Robsten Circle of Friends. He also partied with Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix, which is never a good sign. I’m just saying… while Kristen’s infidelity probably contributed to Sparkles’ current angst, it’s more than possible that he’s just sick of the entire Hollywood scene. For good reason.

Incidentally, I keep seeing the Dior Homme commercials and I can’t help but think that Dior completely mishandled the build-up to this campaign and the campaign itself. I do not think Dior got their money’s worth out of Sparkles in any sense, and that’s on them not Sparkles. Also: a few weeks ago, the first trailer for Sparkles’ movie The Rover dropped. It actually looks pretty good, but that’s because of Guy Pearce.

Wow! If this is true then good for him and how refreshing to find someone who actually wants to be educated. I can’t imagine having that kind of fame at such a young age. He can always come back to acting if he wants. Good luck to the guy!

    • Lisa says:

      Agreed!

    • Hannah says:

I don’t know if its that commendable. Isn’t he 27 or 28? If he wanted to become an actor why didn’t he go to theatre school before embarking on an acting career? Seems like the logical way to do it. Out of the current crop of Brit actors he is the only one who didnt go theatre school and it really shows.

      • another nina says:

In his very first interviews, when he was still an unknown, he’s mentioned that he did not get admitted anywhere due to low scores on qualifying exams (I’m not sure how they call them in Britain). He also said that he never did any homework at school…

      • Rae says:

Life? Things don’t always go the ‘normal’ route. Hell, I just re-started doing my degree again when I am 28.

It doesn’t matter if you’re 27 or 2.7, if you choose to go back to any school (theatre or academic) it is a good thing.

      • Em says:

@anothernina securing a place in drama school in England has nothing to do with grades. It’s based on acting talent, they go through a process of auditioning. Art,music and drama schools are not reliant on academic ability.

      • Kimmy says:

Agreed. I’m 29 and considering nursing school.

Never too late. Good for Sparkles!

  2. The Original G says:

    Ok. Good luck!

  3. Nikkie says:

He has been complaining about hating fame for the last 4 years this is nothing new. I’m all for Sparkles going back to school either to learn how to act or direct. He is right about the Twilight fans and their internet usage.

    • MonicaQ says:

It’s kind of scary honestly. Almost as scary as the Beiber kids or tumblr’s obsession over anything Sherlock/Supernatural. Seriously, what do they *DO* all day besides make gif and write slash fic? Even if I wanted to do that (and I don’t), I got to go to work and school and practice, man.

      • Nikkie says:

They vote for polls over and over again all day, they look up stories about their favorite twilight actor to defend his or her honor. Watch they will get an alert on this story in 5..4..3..2..1

      • Anname says:

The really scary group now believe that he is in a secret relationship with Kristen and that she is pregnant. They have created an entire fantasy around these two people. I can’t imagine what Rob thinks when/if he sees stuff like that. He’s not the only celeb to have that kind of weirdness around him, but it is definitely intense.

      • mimi says:

Actually, it’s his own fanbase who vote in online polls like overly obsessed idiots, not the Twihards. Twilight has been finished for over a year now. Those Twilight fans have already moved on to the next YA franchise. Go to Rob’s imdb board and see for yourselves!

      • Janet says:

Anname, they sound like the ones who went to the premiere of Breaking Dawn wearing long white wedding dresses specially bought for the occasion.

(Probably the only time in their lives they ever got to wear one.)

  4. Anna says:

I think he’s one of a few actors who sounds believable when he says he doesnt want to be famous anymore (I am looking at you, Shia). He never really courted publicity and always seems more at home at a dive or with his band, but when in public he was always well-behaved. I like that he’s taken on a lot of low-budget, low pay but interesting work since the end of Twilight, or even between the films. So…best of luck to whatever he wants to do.

  5. Jj says:

He went to London way in advance of Christmas and the last time he was papped was the first week of December there. He got a lot of peace there. In the meantime, he also went to Morocco and shot a movie and then onto Toronto. He’s been there a few weeks and starting another movie today. Yeah good for him being out of LA for months

  6. dahlianoir says:

“he spent much of last fall knee-deep in Hollywood starlets”

My brain needs bleach now, THANKS !

  7. Lucy says:

If it’s true, then great for him. I really want him to do well, whatever path he chooses.

  8. Felice says:

So do you think he will still do Lost City of Z with Benedict Cumberbatch?

    • AG-UK says:

probably if he tries to get into University here or the US couldn’t start until September so he has a few months to work if he chooses

    • Anname says:

It’s in preproduction, and I think they took it to Berlinale to seek additional financing. Cumberbatch has said it’s the next thing he is doing, so it looks like it will happen.
I think the school thing is made up, he seems focused on building a respectable career at this point.

  9. lucy2 says:

If that’s what he really wants, good for him.
I have had my fill of the Twilight people complaining about their fame though – they willingly signed on to a franchise of a HUGELY popular book series. What did they expect?

    • Janet says:

I think the Twihards took the crazy to a whole new level.

    • Nikkie says:

      @Another Anne

They signed on to make more films with a new contract after the initial films became box office hits. So he signed on knowingly for more fame/ twilight madness. Then post twilight he signed on to a high profile advertising job with Dior cologne. Actors who want to avoid fame don ‘t seek out advertising contracts. He did it to keep his profile high, to not be forgotten. Don’t get me wrong I think he is a nice guy but sends mixed messages.

  10. ali says:

Ummmmmm ok. Don’t know when he’s going to fit school in. He’s got about 3 or 4 films on his slate for this year to make , one with Benedict Cumberbatch. He’s currently filming now with Dane Dehaan in Toronto and just finished filming with Nicole Kidman and james franco.
Sounds to me like this rag is desperate for a story and is starting to make things up like Hollywoodlife.
Having said that he is a very clever young man and I wouldn’t be surprised if he took up a part time masters course at some point in time.
As for fame this genuine young man never sought it and has
dealtwith it with humour and grace. A real gentleman. He’s quiet at the moment because he’s working and because he qon’Tt activ
ely seek the limelight anymore. Only work related publicity imo.

    • Anname says:

Agree! I wish him much success and look forward to seeing him back on movie screens this year.

    • Joyce James says:

I agree with the comments that he never sought fame, and seems to be a pretty level headed young man. On another note, none of his “pals” would ever talk to Radar! Siince he has been out of the spotlight, Radar is just seeking attention. Now just watch the other gossip sites pick this up. I look forward to his movies that will be released later this year, and wish him the best.

  11. Kelly says:

Yes, finally, disappear please, you have zero acting talent. And I’ve never found him appealing, at all, I mean at least Cumberbatch has charisma and talent, this guy has nothing, I seriously don’t get his appeal (other than the Twihard crazy delusions of Edward I guess?). He seems like a nice bloke and all, but seriously, he is a prime example of pure luck with nothing to back it up. So unfair really.

p.s. he doesn’t want to be famous but he’s doing Dior commercials??? biatch pls

  12. Mia4S says:

I’m not sure school is the way to go unless he really wants out of it all. Wouldn’t it make sense to try some stage work? He’s a very mediocre actor, particularly in his British peer group, but another franchise kid (Dan Radcliffe) got some credibility by going that stage route. Of course theatre critics are merciless. so maybe school first.

    • lunchcoma says:

I actually think school would be a good move for Pattinson. Celebrities don’t typically have high graduation rates, so it’s not the same kind of commitment as it would be for a regular person. For him, I think it would be a year or two to think about what he really wants out of life – if he wants to be a movie star, a non-star actor, do something else in entertainment, or leave the industry altogether.

Granted, I don’t think there’s a bit of truth to this, given that he’s signed on to a bunch of movies at the moment, but I think it would be good for someone who’s clearly very conflicted about fame to take some time off.

  13. manta says:

Well The Rover looks pretty good not only because of Guy Pearce but because David Michôd directed it. I loved Animal Kingdom and have been waiting for his next picture.

As for Pattinson, I only saw him in Cosmopolis and have no strong feeling about him, one way or another. But if Michôd picked him,it could be interesting.

    • Jenny says:

Exactly what I was going to write manta! 🙂 Guy Pearce is a great actor but if this movie is good it will be because of Michôd directing, I think. Animal Kingdom was amazing. I’ve been waiting for his next movie too. I’ve seen Pattinson in a few films, Cosmopolis being one and I think he is a really uneven actor. Sometimes he can be really good, like the last half hour of Cosmopolis, but at other times he is a bit cringe-worthy. So it’s going to be interesting to see him in the Rover.

  14. Div says:

He signed up for a huge Dior contract, and was a regular at the Chateau Marmont post Twilight so I find this unlikely. He was looking like a hot mess for a while though and was hanging with Zac Efron’s circle and apparently Joaquin too, so I give him credit for getting out of L.A. and that group.

    • deehunny says:

I was just about to say– how can you take this seriously when he was partying at the CM daily… the opposite of not wanting to be famous or seen. He is probably just taking a break.

      • Anname says:

I do not understand why people think he went to CM to be seen, He would sneak in and out of there, with no photographs allowed inside. How does this translate into wanting to be famous/seen, since he was actively avoiding being photographed? If he had paraded past the paps going in and out it would be different, but he didn’t do that. On a side note, I too am glad he left LA and that shady group of people behind. He did seem to flounder a bit this past summer, but seems to be in a better mental space now.

      • lunchcoma says:

I don’t know that he went there to be seen, but someone who wants to be private would drastically increase his chances of being able to do so if he avoided that place and a couple of dozen other celebrity hotspots.

(Which, I mean, I guess that might prevent him from hanging out with some of his friends, but friends worth having would be willing to move the party elsewhere.)

      • Lara Morgana says:

He WAS partying at CM. You know, when you’re young and going through major life changes you reach out for any little thing to help you make it through the day (or night). So he partied for a while finding his way through life after his breakup with Kristen.

The party scene got old, he’s moved on.

Most people go through phases in their lives when they are just attempting to find their way. Why is that so hard to understand?

  15. blueclouds says:

There are no friends of his talking to Radar, they just made stuff up based on the fact that he hasn’t been papped in nearly three months and there’s no ‘drama’ surrounding him anymore. I think he prefers his life this way. His biggest problem is he was overexposed with Twilight and Robsten and not his works. People looked at his other movies and said ‘meh. He smiles like Edward Cullen’, ‘he stares like EC,. Now that both are over, he’s smart to stay lowkey and focus on his career. I’m pretty sure he’s not quitting any time soon. He has two movies coming out this year, and two in production. The teaser trailer for The Rover is too short to judge but both Guy and the director praise his acting in this, so I’m excited to see this movies. And the Dior campaign is quite successful IMO, at least for him. He gets the money and the right kind of exposure. I think he’s on the right track.

    • Joyce Jones says:

Agree that the Dior campaign is quite successful, and he gets the right exposure. Gossip sites never discuss his movies. He had a small role in Queen of the Desert which he has completed (the Director tweeted that he was pleased with his performance), and today he began filming the movie Life. Twilight was a crappy movies for teens and I believe he should not be judged by onky Twilight. Most of the critics praised his performance Cosmopolis and it was 65% on Rotten Tomatoes. I like the choice of movies he is selecting now (most are supporting roles). He’s focusing on working with good Directors and great casts.

  16. Mel M says:

That last pic of him is funny and it’s not trying to be. He looks like he’s possessed.

    • lady mary. says:

i hate that pic 2 ,out of all the pics that they could have got out of this gorgeous man, they choose that pic a for main campaign ,

  17. another nina says:

That’s an old story, I guess. He kept talking since before 1st Twilight times about intentions to go to school (he mentioned law school) and then joked about becoming a dentist with Jon Stewart. His struggle with fame is a defining theme of his Hollywood story. Timing of this radar’s post is strange though. It appears that Sparkle’s career is finally back on track (although not in a lead capacity). However, instead of being at the top of the world after working with some of the finest directors, Sparkles is depressed and disappointed…

  18. lulu says:

there are pics of him in Toronto filming, so I don’t think he is in London.

  19. St says:

He is nice person. But he can’t act and it’s just painfully to see him on screen. He had many chances to prove he can be better and he looked like himself in every movie.

  20. Ravensdaughter says:

Holy shite-“The Rover”. Guy Pearce has always been a stand out actor-this film looks beyond intense.
This could help (no spoilers, from IMDB):
“A loner tracks the gang who stole his car from a desolate town in the Australian outback with the forced assistance of a wounded guy left behind in the wake of the theft.”

  21. MeganDraper says:

He’s such a different person without the drama in his life. People don’t want to admit it but that’s one part of what his relationship with Kristen was. Both of them are at fault for that. He’s really trying different things in his career. I hope he succeeds.
