Angelina Jolie is Hollywood’s highest paid woman, only woman in ‘top ten’ earners

FFN_BAFTA_Awards_FLYUK_021614_51331499

Angelina Jolie is on the top of the Hollywood heap once again. Only not really. Women’s Media Center compiled their list of “highest movie stars” and wouldn’t you know? Angelina is the only woman to crack the Top Ten. It’s a sausage party beyond Angelina, only… the list seems to only be about money made from actual film work. In which case, Robert Downey Jr. with his crazy backend deal for The Avengers and Iron Man 3 was always going to be #1.

The top 10 highest-paid movie stars in Hollywood? A bunch of dudes…and Angelina Jolie. The Oscar winner was the top-earning female actress in 2013 with $33 million, according to figures used in a report compiled by the Women’s Media Center, but her seemingly to-die-for paycheck was only just big enough to put her on par with the, er, lowest-earning (you know, in Hollywood dollars) male actor, Denzel Washington.

Who’s tops? Robert Downey Jr., of course, with a $75 million haul from the Iron Man franchise, per the New York Film Academy.

Liam Neeson was the 10th-highest-paid male star, with $31.5 million, allowing just enough room for Jolie (who, while some of her top-earning male counterparts have been nominated, is the only one other than Washington to have won an Oscar) to squeeze in at No. 10 overall.

The ubiquitous Channing Tatum trailed RDJ last year with $60 million, while Hugh Jackman was next with $55 million, followed by Mark Wahlberg, with $51 million.

Dwayne Johnson is the not-so-surprising sixth-place hunk (his box office was bigger than Downey’s last year), ahead of Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Sandler, Tom Cruise, Washington and Neeson.

As for the ladies who also had what can still be considered a very good 2013, Jennifer Lawrence was second to Jolie with $26 million. Kristen Stewart ($21.5 million), Jennifer Aniston ($20 million) and Emma Stone ($16 million) rounded out the top five.

[From E! News]

I don’t doubt that Aniston has made $20 million off of film projects in the past year, but I would think that if we were counting money made from endorsement deals, modeling projects and SmartWater percentages, Aniston would be bumped up Jolie-level. Aniston’s side projects are very, very lucrative. Of course, Angelina has some lucrative side projects too – the Chateau Miraval wine, the Louis Vuitton endorsement, The Style of Jolie jewelry. The thing about Angelina’s endorsements though is that I think a lot of that money goes to charity.

As for the dudes… as I said, I’m not surprised by RDJ. I’m also not surprised by Channing Tatum, Mark Wahlberg (he’s become a huge producer) or Leonardo DiCaprio. I’m a little bit surprised that Tom Cruise still cracks the top ten. I’m also surprised that The Rock is on there too.

PS… Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are both going to present at the Oscars. YAY! They’ve made the list compiled by EW – see the full list here.

    Emma Stone???!!!!!

  2. GeeMoney says:

First I find out about Cumberbatch presenting at the Oscars, and now Angie and Brad are going to present too?!? My day has just currently been made.

Glad to see that there is at least one woman close to the top on that list… there should be more, though.

    • Ag-UK says:

Love Cumberbatch but there is no way he would miss the Oscars.

    • Kim1 says:

Did you know AJ is on a 3 day UN trip .She is meeting with Syrian refugees in Lebanon today?

      • rosalee says:

It’s terrific she is going to Lebanon to witness the desperate situation of the Syrian refugees. But, what is she going to do? Pitch a tent, hold a barbecue, kiss some babies. They need much more than Jolie. I am impressed with her funding infrastructure projects, schools, building homes. But a cheque for medical services, tents, warm clothing, sleeping bags, food, schools or advocating for a accelerated visa processing would be more welcome. I would love it if she stood up in the UN and pointed out there are three streams of refugees. PS she is one of the most beautiful women on the planet, and generous with her name and money. Beauty with purpose.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I am excited about Cumberbatch presenting too! Also happy to see that JGL and Thor will be there….and, I’ll admit it, I won’t mind gazing at Efron either 🙂

    • Oooh, the ‘Batch is going to be there???!!! I wonder what he’s going to present–that voice. Le sigh. He could read the damn phone book to me, and I’d still listen.

  3. Renee28 says:

It’s makes Hollywood look bad when recently Sandra Bullock has been far more successful than some of these men and she’s not on this list.

    • Aria says:

      Totally agree

    • JaDeRu says:

This also surprised me. Maybe the Women’s Media Center asked permission to use financial earnings before they did their report? (I don’t know, is that something that’s public information?) Sandra and a few other’s, both male and female, seem to be missing.

    • Erin says:

Angie’s movies seldom make money. Sort of surprising.

      • Sienna says:

I dont know where you get your information from but Angelina’s movies almost always make the money back with profits.

        The Tourist – Budget 100M & Profit 300M
        Kung Fu Panda 2 – Budget 150M & profit 665M
        Salt – Budget 110M & profit 290M
        Changeling – budget 55M & profit 113M
        Wanted – Budget 75M & profit 341M
        Kung Fu Panda – Budget 130M & profit 631M

I have only listed those movies she has acted since 2008 and all of them have made back atleast 200 percent profit. Even with the upcoming Maleficent for which she is paid 25M plus 10 percent backend – will be a mega hit and critics are predicting it will gross more than 500M globally. Unbroken again she is getting 20M and 10 percent backend and that movie is one of the most anticipated movies in 2014.

  4. V4Real says:

Damn, didn’t I take the wrong career path…. I would be happy if I made 2mill last year.

But wasn’t this list compilied by Forbes or some other mag months ago?

    • FirstTimer says:

Yes. I think they only used the data Forbes had and noticed that only Angelina made the Top Ten list from the Top Earning Actresses list of Forbes. I think it’s more on how the actresses’ salaries were compared against men that’s the point of all these.

    • Janet Planet says:

Why is she making so much money? Her movies are so friggin’ boring. They’re either Lara Croft variations, or some sort of maternal costume-heavy Oscar vehicles. Snoozefest.

  5. MrsBPitt says:

I was shocked that Channing Tatum was No. 2! I love Channing, but never dreamed he pulled in $60 million last year!

    • V4Real says:

That’s only becasue he had several movies out during that time period. The same thing with Dwayne Johnson. They wouldn’t have made that much if it was with just one movie, like Downey.

    • Nikkie says:

Didn’t Channing finance Magic Mike on his own? He would have gotten a big chunk of profits from the film’s success. Add to that his pay from GI Joe, 21 Jump street , White House Down.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Channing produced both Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street. Producing makes a lot more money than just acting!

  6. FLORC says:

    She’s so pretty. So jealous.
Don’t her and brad donate somewhere between 33-50% of their take home pay forball income earned while many ventures have all profits minus overhead go to charity?

  7. dizzylucy says:

I’m not sure how they figured this. The only acting work she’s done in recent years is Malificent, right? No way they paid $30+ million upfront for that, maybe with back end deals once the film is released, but not upfront. Directing money?
I also find it hard to believe that Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Lawrence don’t crack the top 10. They had 2 of the biggest movies this year, and yet are beat by Mark Walberg and Hugh Jackman??
At least there’s a woman on the list, but that’s a pretty clear picture of the differences still happening in Hollywood.

    • truthSF says:

This is actually last year’s list. Believe me, when the new list comes out in June, Sandra (maybe J. Lawrence) will definitely be in the top ten.

    • V4Real says:

I’m thinking even though they claim it’s from acting, they probably included other income. Didn’t Jolie only get around 14 mil for Maleficent.

From my undrstanding when they say they made $$$$ for 2013 some mags are not talking about the calendar year. I believe Forbes was using the fiscal year that usually starts the beginning of July 2012- June 2013. Some of these people had several movies during that time.

      • dizzylucy says:

Ah, thanks, that makes more sense. I looked at the list of the top movies of 2013, and some of those guys have no business being on the list!

      • Andrea1 says:

@V4real not super sure but it seems she got $20m for maleficent then $10m for the LV advert then I guess the remaining from style of jolie saw that somewhere can’t remember the site.

      • Candy love says:

From my understanding they go by how much you got paid for the movie you did during that year and not how much a movie made.

No Jolie gets paid 20 mill a movie and she also has producer credits on Maleficent as well which is why she got 33Mill.

      • Andrea1 says:

@Candy thanks for the clarification 🙂

    • Andrea1 says:

I might be mistaken but I think this is the list of money made between 2012 and 2013. By june this year we should know who earned the highest pay of 2013. And I dint think it includes money paid for directing. Does anyone know how much she was payed to direct unbroken? I would love to know. But am sure by the time this year’s list come’s out Jlaw and Sandra would be top earners because they had a bumper 2013. And finally I do agree with you about the differences still happening in hollywood I stated that downthread too.

    • rachel says:

Right? This is skewed. Women’s Media Center is probably just promoting her because of her charity work about Rape, — and a deal with her PR people that was good for them too. Hey, I just went to their website- it worked! Seems to me she isn’t doing AS much work that isn’t self propelled. Salt was supposed to the be the big thing that kept her relevent (ya ya I know she is relevant for being a super famous person and part of a power couple, but I mean relevant in movies in an important 20-35’s demographic). My sense is that Salt and that sily Johnny Dep movie were a problem for her in terms of being a major franchise in the way she used to be. She is so so expensive that if the movie isn’t a major blockbuster or just eeks out a profit in the post-theatres/overseas market- that studios are not killing eachother any more to be the ones that sign her up for important roles. I am not saying it can’t happen or it doesn’t happen, its just that it is a huge commitment and risk for them now- financially- so it needs to be very carefully considered.. Thats my opinion- but I am sure i will now be attacked by her people for having an opinion..

      • Tulip Garden says:

I hope you are not attacked for your opinion. If what you say is true then she was smart to sign onto Disney’s Malificent. Disney movies usually do well.

      • FirstTimer says:

What’s so bad in her work against sexual violence in conflict? I mean really, If this organization is “promoting her and her charity work against rape” then what’s so bad about it? And the data they used weren’t theirs, they just used the data Forbes released sometime ago.

      • Tulip Garden says:

I didn’t think the poster was saying anything is bad about Jolie working against sexual violence awareness. I think she was pointing out that happily for the Women’s Media Center Jolie does that work AND is the top paid female performer. So, actually, these two things together are bringing more attention to this issue which isn’t a bad thing at all. At least, that was my take on the above post.

      • Candy love says:

But in away they still are since she was offered both Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Lawrence parts in both “American Hustle” and “Gravity “.

All this list shows is that woman are still paid less them men for do the same job if not a better job.

      • FirstTimer says:

I don’t know why I can’t reply to you Tulip Garden. 🙂 Anyway, thanks for your take on what Rachel wrote; however, I read it differently. I think the point of all this is how far the difference between an male actor’s salary to a woman’s salary, that the biggest earner for women earns as much as the lowest earner for men on this list. I think regardless of who the actress is, this will be pointed out. It just happens to be Angelina.

      • FLORC says:

        Tulip Garden
Rachels comment didn’t come off as nice as you’re putting it. It was rich with snark and a strong negative tone towards Jolie… And yes she does a great deal of humanitarian work, but to gloss over it as just “charity work about rape” is showing a lack of understanding and belittling the work for the causes and charities.

        Rachel
The Depp movie was called The Tourist. It did extremely well world wide.

      • Andrea1 says:

        THANK YOU SO MUCH FLORC!
Rachael’s comment was full of snark and wasn’t as nice as Tulip Garden was trying to make it sound. I didn’t want to engage because they always say we fanatics, superstans (and whatever names they call us) don’t always allow people have their opinion on Aj. But am glad you called her out! How can you say charity work about rape? Mehn that’s So demeaning… Smh

      • What do you mean?

‘Salt’ made 293 and a half million dollars worldwide, with a budget of a 110 million in 98 days i.e. nearly three million dollars a day while it was out. ‘The Tourist’ had a budget of 100 million (wtf did they spend THAT money on??? Location and jewelry?) and made 278,346,189 million dollars in 91 days i.e. a little over three million a day. The Tourist ranked #2 on its opening weekend, as well as Salt.

You may not have liked either movie–but they still did well, and that’s not even taking into account the people that had to rent the movies, because their stupid theater only plays stupid franchise films (ME), or all the movies that we can get through Netflix, Redbox.

  8. Em says:

I still don’t think annistons earning powers are anywhere near Jolie’s. Even for the endorsement deals accompany will pay much more to use her name. I remember when salt came out, the head of the studio said the part was originally written for Tom cruise and they decided to rewrite it and offer it to Jolie. She is pretty much the only female actor who has that kind of power in Hollywood.

    • Kim1 says:

      Aniston usually does 2 or 3 films a year.Jolie does 1 film every 2 or 3 years.
Also after watching the Lisa Kudrow trial the Friends actors were still getting residuals in 2013.Kudrow earned $100M from Friends. She was the lowest earner because when the show started her salary was $13,000 an episode, the lowest of the 6.

      • FLORC says:

        Kim1
I thought for certain all the friends cast stoped receiving that money a few years ago. No?

      • Kim1 says:

I thought so, until I watched some of the trial coverage they put a bar graph saying she ( Kudrow) earned a million in Friends Residuals in 2012 and I believe $900,000 in 2013. Her ex manager is suing her for his cut of the Friends residuals. I think the money(%) tapered off over the years. I was also surprised that Kudrow earned $100 million just from Friends . BTW Kudrow was acting dumb like her character Phoebe on the stand.Inside Edition covered the trial

      • dizzylucy says:

I think they got a chunk of the syndication profits for the first few years, and now just get residuals, which are different. That’s amazing they’re all still making that much off it 10 years later, but good for them – it still plays a lot.

      • They got something like 16.6 million a year, for five years after the show ended (a split of 100 million a year)….and yeah, the remaining residuals would be around a million or so a year afterwards—which isn’t a lot compared to what they used to get.

I wonder what Jennifer does with her money? Because that’s a TON of money. I wish she’d sink some of it into some good film projects.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Keep in mind, in addition to residuals, in demand actors also get paid to “sign on” to a project whether or not it gets made. For example, I know with actors like Denzel, he could be signed to do a movie and if it didn’t end up geting made, yet he still gets $10M.

      • Penny says:

They all still get around a million a year, sometimes more, sometimes less, but given Friends popularity worldwide they can all safely rely on that income for a long time to come.

All in I believe each of the six will have earned about 120 million (pre-taxes, agent’s fee’s and so on, obviously) from Friends so far.

  9. Mia4S says:

…OK this is not new, but we may need a new thread just for the Oscar presenter list! The WTF?!?! awards go to Zac Efron and Hessica Biel?!?? Seriously WTF! I mean everyone else on the list was in or is about to be in big flicks. Wow what favours were called in there?

It’s also interesting that Hemsworth is presenting solo after not presenting with the Avengers guys last year (even though he was in LA). Hmmmm…

Beyond that I saw two words: Bill Murray. That is all. 🙂

  10. pleaseicu says:

I really admire Jolie but what is she making her money off of to crack that top 10 when she didn’t release a movie last year and really hasn’t released a movie since Kung-Fu Panda 2 in 2010 or 2011? IIRC her only acting work in the past year was filming the live-action Malificent.

I find it very hard to believe that notoriously cheap Disney gave her $30+ million upfront. Is she already making Spielberg-type money for directing? Is this all endorsement money? Get that money, girl, if so.

    • Cecilia says:

Does this money for the high earners include money for pics sold to magazines & tabloids? I really have no idea.

      • lisa2 says:

Well considering the twins are almost 6 that money wouldn’t have counted..

        you seriously can’t help yourself.

      • Bea says:

You would have to ask those who give interviews about weddings, non-weddings and no time for weddings that question.

But I’m sure you what their answer would be….”um…hair? Um…no trying um…travel to um…Iran, no, um…Indiana..no that’s close oh yeah! India!”

      • Sal says:

I don’t think Angelina would know anything about that, you’d have to ask Aniston about her infamous yearly deal with the Cabo paps, oh and People magazine of course, re her fake engagement and fake wedding.

      • Cecilia says:

I was not just talking about Angelina. I am genuinely curious if like Sandra, Angie, Aniston, J Garner etc. — any of them. Do the stars make money off of pics that appear in magazines or tabloids? Like airport shots or taking your kids to school. I know that some pics are worth more than others, but does the actual celebrity receive any money for those pics?

        @ lisa2
I know about the backend pay & residuals but what about pics?

      • Cecilia says:

I decided to just google my question & this came up:

        http://loveandknuckles.com/2012/01/how-celebrities-make-money-off-of-staged-photos.html

Edit: Celebrities, our their representatives, strike a deal (typically a year-long contract) with a photo agency to broker the sales of staged photos to tabloid magazines, TV shows, and websites around the world. Profits from the sale are split down the middle, the celebrity, and the agency receiving 50 percent. The checks come in on a monthly basis. If an agent or publicist brokers the deal, they take a 10-15 percent cut off the top.

    • lisa2 says:

She gets backend pay I think for a lot of her films. Something she learned to do after Tomb raider. So she could get some form DVD sales or maybe TV rights.. not sure. But she is smart. I still don’t think those outlets have an accurate count of how much or little these celebrities make.

Good for her. I don’t think she is making huge millions for Directing. Most directors can make from 1-maybe 10 million.. that 10 is for the big players.

      • The Original G says:

I suspect as well that this money is back end profits from other film projects. Even when you look at the male actors, none of them are commanding that kind of money up-front.

    • Tiffany :) says:

She is also Executive Producer on Malificent, she isnt’ just acting! Producing pays WAY more!

      • pleaseicu says:

Producing pays way more on the back end, when profits are divvied up. On the front end, producing usually involves expenditure of capital (financial or labor) of some kind to get the project in production and through production to post and distribution.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Yes, but that explains the $30m+ they are listing for Maleficent (that it isn’t all just from acting). From what I understand, she did provide “labor” to get the movie made. Yes, they get more on the back end, but that isnt to say that a producer of Angie’s nature doesn’t get anything upfront.

Edit: I just realized that they aren’t crediting Maleficent as being the sole source of her income, which I misunderstood originally. It does make more sense when I realized that!

  11. Jane Q. Doe says:

I wonder if they’re including the $ she’s getting for directing (and producing?) Unbroken?
Also, has anyone else in the top 10 list directed?
Now all of a sudden I’m trying to picture AJ and The Rock as co-stars…fascinating!

  12. Bea says:

I’m thrilled that they will both be presenting at the Oscars.

I’ll bet Angelina will exhausted after her trip to Lebanon, I hope she is on her way home now safe and sound.

Oh to have 2% of that woman’s energy!

    • lisa2 says:

Yeah I saw that she was there. Goodness I love her dedication. Also some idiot was posting her room number and where she was staying. it has been so dangerous there. I admire her will to do what she needs to do despite the risk.

Oh there is and interview with her and Louis tomorrow on The Today Show.. w/Tom Brokaw

OH and she and Brad are presenting at the OSCARS.. I’m excited.

      • Bea says:

I saw that stupid reporter who tweeted her hotel, travel itinerary and room number. What an idiot. I think he was pissed that the UN asked for the press not to report her being there until she was done and decided to “show them”.

I can’t wait for the interview tomorrow, she and Louis have a great “love affair” going on and it will be great. Especially with Brokaw and his Greatest Generation affection.

      • WAIT, seriously? Someone tweeted the name of her hotel, and room number??? Wow, isn’t that person nice. I wouldn’t do that to a celeb I disliked, until they were actually out of the hotel.

    • Andrea1 says:

Its good to see her doing her humanitarian work and yes Lisa I was So shocked to discover that the guy who posted her room number is a journalist isn’t that against his ethics or something. And yes I can’t wait to see her interview with Loius tomorrow on Today! 🙂 more greeze to her elbow

      • SayWhat? says:

I know it’s mean to say this but I hope that journo loses his job or at least, gets severely reprimanded. To think he puts someone’s or anyone’s life at stake.

    • Dawn says:

I am with you! I like her and I always have. I think she is truly doing good works for the world and like Audry Hepburn she is doing it all for the right reasons.

    • MrsBPitt says:

      I hope they present together!!

  13. Anna says:

Its not Amber-can’t act HEard!!???? lollll

  14. lisa2 says:

As someone said a lot of the male high earners are based on franchises. I would be curious to see what they would earn from just a normal movie.. NOT much I bet

  15. Jayna says:

It’s amazing that it took Liam to hit his 60s to be in that top ten list. Pretty amazing. You never see that.

    • dizzylucy says:

He really did have quite a career resurgence.

      • Jayna says:

So true. I predict his new film, Non-Stop, will have a huge opening. They say his third installment of Taken 3 will bring him $50 million. I read a 20 million salary, but I guess with back end percentages it could be 50 million, which is what Anderson Cooper said on 60 Minutes he would be making off of the third one. He was only paid $1 million for the first Taken and upped to $10 for the second with a percentage also. .

He never wanted to do a Taken 3, but Taken 2 made such massive numbers, which stunned everybody as big as it went, and his salary would be so big to do another one at his age that he really couldn’t turn it down.

    • I saw this interview where he said that when he did ‘Taken’, he thought it would be direct to video…..how wrong he was.

      • Jayna says:

True. And not only that, Nathasha didn’t want him to do Taken. I guess she thought it was beneath him since she was more of an artsy actress, indie films and Broadway, as was he. He just felt like doing something more physical like that before he was too old. Little did he know what a good decision that was.

Even though the first one was better, the second one earned like 150 million more at the box office worldwide.

        The first one:
        $25 million to make
        Box office $226,830,568

        Taken 2:
        $45 million to make
        Box office $376,141,306

      • lisa2 says:

And sad to say he keeps doing that same movie over and over again; or some variation of it.

      • @lisa2
I think he’s just working as much as possible, the poor man. He has done 28 films/tv work since he shot ‘Chloe’ (Natasha died in the middle of filming it)–and is doing two more projects for 2015. Ugh, my poor husband. Work, work, work….he misses his Tash.

But at this point in his career, I don’t give a f-ck if he does action films when he’s eighty years old (at which point he’ll look sixty)—I will go and see every single one of them. I do plan on seeing Non Stop—we’ll see if it plays in my area though.

      • Jayna says:

@Virgilio Coriolanus,, one of the reviews says it’s a great thriller that carries you to the end. I will be there opening weekend because it looks great.

I agree about he can keep doing whatever he wants. And I loved Unknown, he did after Taken 1, a thriller, but different. I loved Grey, which was honestly more of a character study of a man wanting to kill himself over the death of his wife and his desire to stay alive when the plane crashed. Many people were disappointed that it was not as much of an action film like Taken. I loved analyzing his character and the letter he wrote and his relationship and did he want to live or die and I loved the isolation of the set. The movie really made you think.

He will be in a lot more smaller more intimate roles coming up. He’s just striking while he can and I’m fine with it.

I would never have guessed that Channing Tatum was making that much cash. I just don’t see him as a “star.” As for Angelina, she didn’t have many projects out last year did she? I mean, she’s making great money considering I can’t think of that last movie she was in.

    Dang, Angelina Jolie is stunning!!

I love the playful Angelina depicted in the 2nd pic. I wish her safe travels as she goes about her UN business.

She han’t had a movie out since The Tourist

I wonder who negotiates their contracts. If you have a good agent working on you behalf you can get more money than even more talented (seemingly) stars.

  21. Jayna says:

She has the most beautiful eyes. They are like a blue-grey color.

    Kristen Stewart? Man…

Same thought here… haha.. I mean, I get it, Twilight and all that = big bucks. But big bucks means that she gets cast again for other projects and her acting ability… well… the nicest thing I can say about that is that it’s better than her poetry, which is downright abysmal. Never read such a ridiculous poem than that one in marie claire. Cringeworthy.

But I heard the critics are really benign about her in “Camp X-Ray”. As I don’t believe that she learned how to act overnight I guess it’s a case of really good casting. That’s in fact her strength – some people around her throw her roles where she can basically play herself (moody, rebellious, a bit insecure, a bit awkward, socially challenged). As most of these parts are in Indie movies without a lot of promotion involved (where she sucks), it’s great for her. So kudos to her team, really.

Adore Angelina and Jennifer. By virtue of all they do for charity, whether you personally like either of them or not is of course, your choice totally. But I hate seeing either of them trashed. It just astounds me. They give so much to charity and both have such redeeming qualities that are so lacking in the idiot Gwyneth and other shallow celebs who are all so sickening today. More focus on the kind ones, like Angie, Jen, Sandra etc. please!

  24. vylette says:

I like how she does not take her stardom too seriously but uses it for doing such good work. I think more celebrities need to be like her. So i wont shade her for calling paps or selling pics.

  25. Isadora says:

And The Tourist wasn’t her best either, me thinks…

I just hope Maleficent movie will not be so boring as Snow White and the Hunter. I will be so disappointed
