Shailene Woodley in cutout Lyn Devon at the Spirit Awards: too casual or sweet?

2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards Arrivals
Shailene Woodley was one of the more bizarrely dressed at last night’s Independent Spirit Awards. She was in this cutout navy blue Lyn Devon gown which showed off her great figure but was a bit too casual, even for the Spirit Awards. Shailene is a very down-to-earth sort who dreams of leaving Hollywood behind to live off the earth. (She really does!) So in that respect I get why she went for something casual and easy. This dress shows off her killer body but it’s a little blah for me. The skirt is way too long. Still, she’s being true to her style and she looks very happy and relaxed. Shailene’s hair is short as she cut it for her role in The Fault in Our Stars. She was nominated in the best actress category for The Spectacular Now, which went to Cate Blanchett.

Here’s Laura Dern supporting her dad, Bruce, 77, who was nominated for Male Lead, for Nebraska. (Male lead went to Matthew McConaughey, of course, for Dallas Buyer’s Club.) I rented Nebraska a couple of days ago and I really enjoyed it, although the film was slow at times. I think it’s worth watching if you can get used to the pacing. Bruce’s performance, as a man with alzheimer’s who has flashes of clarity, was top notch.

In terms of Laura’s fashion, I don’t have a designer ID on the dress but I think it’s kind of perfect for the Spirit Awards. It’s a nice cocktail type gown with cute cap sleeves, a loose skirt and a cute floral eyelet print. The skirt would have looked better if it were straight across instead of having those wings on the side.

I don’t have an ID on Sally Hawkins’ atrocious dress either, but this is just really fug. It looks like something out of the 70s that the ladies in Boca would wear. Plus she’s paired it with a huge fan purse that actually matches the ugly print, which even repeats in the belt. Her hair is messy and this look is just bad all around. Hawkins was nominated for Supporting Female, which Lupita Nyong’o took home.

Look at Hawkins’ expression. She knows this is bad.

Here’s Julie Delpy in a v-neck green dress which looks great from the bustline up but descends into asymmetric curtains on the bottom. Why would anyone put a thick border on the bottom of this gown? Plus the belt looks like those western belts we used to wear in the 90s. This dress might be ok with a sleeker belt and a less complicated hemline. Delpy was nominated in the Best Screenplay category, along with her co-star and co-writer Ethan Hawke and director Richard Linklater, for Before Midnight. I just saw that last week, and it was an accurate look into a couples’ problems, I think. There was a lot of talking that got tiresome towards the end, like many Linklater films. Best Screenplay went to 12 Years a Slave.

Laura Dern is rockin’ that look. It screams vintage chic but she can really pull it off. I don’t hate Shailene’s look but the floor length skirt is too formal. Mid calf would be great. And those arms… mygawd I need to go lift weights. Scuse me…

I think Laura Dern looks great too. I love the hair color on her.
The length of Shailene’s skirt was her only problem. She looks young , laid back and natural.

I think Laura’s dress is Little House on the Prairie Fug. Bruce looks really thrilled to be there.

I love Shailene’s outfit. It looks great. And the short hair suits her so well, she should keep it.
I love Sally Hawkins so much, but this looks bad. Really bad.

    • Aura says:

      I LOVE Shailene’s outfit.

    • Crank says:

I like it too, even though I still ain’t understanding the return of showing midriffs, but at least this isn’t a weird cutout our a ‘belly button frame’.
I think she’s a good actress and I’m glad she’s getting some attention, but I unfortunately thing Divergent is going to flop unless it gets good word of mouth and decent reviews. Nothing against her, but the movie looks too similar to what’s been done before and the trailers so far have been focusing to much on the live angle, which worries me.

::::sigh::::: Shailene Woodley’s dress is cute and works given her young age, but it need to be hemmed up a couple of inches and the dainty little necklace need to go and be replaced by a bold bracelet piece. Laura Dern’s milkmaid frock is ridiculous and ugly – like she pulled it out of the back of her closet where it’s been hiding for 25 years. I love her hair, though I am not sure if this color is particularly flattering on her. I actually love Sally Hawkins dress, though it’s too big, too long and the matching belt and bags are ridiculously tragic. Change the belt, bag and put it on Helen Mirren and it would be gorgeous. And then there is Julie Delpy wearing some random hideous dress and whose pale skin and pale hair only highlights her need go have her teeth whitened a smidge.

I don’t like Laura Dern’s dress either. It looks very dated and drab.

    • Zadie says:

I love that Shailene’s skirt is so long and the necklace is perfect,

      • LaurieH says:

I like the long skirt too, but not that it’s dragging on the floor. I wouldn’t mind the necklace so much if 1) it was a little longer (note in the first picture, it was inside the top) and 2) wasn’t competing with the big fabric buttons on the top. Just a personal preference, but when I am wearing a sea of monochromatic color, I like to break it up with a bold piece. In this case, because of those fabric buttons, I would have opted for a bracelet – like a cuff. But that’s just me.

Shailene’s short hair gives her moon face. When I saw her trailer, I thought something was manipulated since her character is supposed to have a swollen face due to illness. Guess not.

  5. Ice Queen says:

I love Shailene Woodley’s outfit but I’m not sure if it’s for this kind of an event… More an MTV music/movie awards thing…

  6. mercy says:

Love the material, colour and simplicity of Shailene’s dress, but it doesn’t work with the midriff cutout or long skirt. It would’ve made a really cute fitted, knee length dress. I like short hair styles, but there’s something off about this cut on her.

Laura Dern looks amazing, but that dress looks really retro, and not in a good way. Like a combination of bad 80’s styles.

Oh Sally Hawkins…the material is very pretty, but a whole long dress plus matching huge purse (that looks like one of those sun visor hats folded in half)…just no.

That colour is beautiful on Julie Delpy, but I don’t like the full skirt.

  7. Sugar1 says:

How or why would Sally think that dress was attractive enough to consider let alone be “the one” and the matching clutch purse looks like a makeup bag .
I love Bruce Dern he is same age as my dad and they both have the same skin tone and white hair. I do not think Bruce would do any procedures I know my dad doesn’t just good genes.

  8. LadySlippers says:

I really like Julie but get the feeling she doesn’t know how to dress to flatter her figure. I’m also thinking she doesn’t have a stylist either as her style really is hit or miss. Before Midnight was a delight to watch though — great script and great acting.

Sally’s whole ensemble is hideous. It’s all too much. Sally’s Ginger was wonderful though.

I liked Laura’s dress but agree with Celebitchy — it’d be even better without the extra fabric on the cap sleeves. I live in a Nebraska so should really see the movie. Lol. Caused a stir when they came to film here (not as much as when Clooney was filming here!).

    And Shailene looks cute. 🙂

  9. Buckley says:

Shailene and Andrew Garfield could play siblings.

  10. serena says:

Shailene looks lovely! I like her short hair and her dress, even if too simple, was cute too.
I also loved Julie Delply’s dress..amazing colour and cut!

  11. taxi says:

Woodley is the first woman I’ve seen in the last few weeks who actually has a show-able midriff. She’s young enough & thin enough to get away with it. Skirt length is way off. Nobody could find tape at the last minute?

Minus the shoulder ruffles, I like Dern’s dress.

Sally got stuck wearing a “cocktails in the cabana” outfit in wash-out colors, which is too bad. She’s pretty & very talented. Whoever put her in that get-up must have been cheering for someone else.

Great color on Delpy, but wide belts with deep plunges just shorten the look of the waist & aren’t flattering to anyone. Would have been better if the waist was dropped an inch or two. I’m ignoring the hi-lo mullet skirt which I hoped was dead.

I like Shailene’s outfit, the others not so much.
