Cate Blanchett in Roksanda Ilincic at the Spirit Awards: gorgeous & regal?

I was just struck by a weird thought – do you think anyone ever refers to Cate Blanchett as “Cat” or “Catie”? No. Kitty-Cat? Never! She just Cate. Or Great Cate. Or La Blanchett. Or The Queen. Well, our Queen picked up her millionth Best Actress award last night at the Spirits. It really is a total wipeout – I can’t think of any actress who has ruled the awards season so completely in recent memory. Cate’s fashion game is back on track too – she wore this interesting Roksanda Ilincic dress which I can’t stop looking at. Is the gold belt part of the original design or was it (as I suspect) an addition by Cate? I like this look on Cate and I think it’s totally appropriate for the Spirit Awards. If I had to mess with anything, I think I would have made the whole dress that shade of brown/burgundy and turquoise and not have had any of the beige fabric. The dress works beautifully from the front, but it’s a snooze in the back. Queen Cate deserves better.

Here’s Elisabeth Moss in an Alexander McQueen dress with a Chloe blazer. I would have liked to see the dress without the blazer. The blazer is what ruins the look for me. But from the neck up, Lizzie Moss has never looked better. PS… she jammed her feet into those heels, didn’t she?

Angela Bassett looks incredible. Good God. I don’t have the designer ID, but this works.

Good lord, it’s good to be Angela Basset, right? I’m happy to see her back on the red carpet and in such fine fettle.

Why are Elizabeth Moss’ shoulders around her ears? I can never really click with her style.

And Cate. Welcome back, great stylish Cate. No fringe, no weirdness, just awesome working it to death. (I think TLO have the runway version up and it includes the belt.)

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

Elizabeth should go back to blonde pronto.
      I hate Cate’s shoes,
Didn’t Anne Hathaway win everything last year?

    • jen says:

Ahhh, Angela. You have made my eyeballs happy. The dress on Blanchett looks like it is far too loose, especially in the pics from behind-lots of gathered fabric being held by the belt-but her face and hair are working for sure!

    • Dommy Dearest says:

LOVEDLOVEDLOVED Basset. And I loved her in American Horror Story. I’ll be honest and say I haven’t seen much of her work but now after AHS, I’ve gone out and watched a lot of her stuff. Bates, Basset, and Lange<3 I melted.

Also, with the header image the award was slightly in it. After clicking it I'm more disappointed it wasn't a staff like I thought!

  2. Lucy says:

Angela is just fierce. I don’t have a problem with Elizabeth’s outfit. And it’s nice to see Cate smiling again!

  3. LaurieH says:

Geez, another collection of bad looks for me. Cate Blanchett’s dress is awful. For one, it’s too big and ill-fitting. For two, the belt is pointless and ruins the dress. For three, it’s entirely too long. And finally, the shoes are all kinds of wrong and cut her off. Remove the belt, change the shoes and visit a tailor and maybe – MAYBE – I would like this dress. Elizabeth Moss looks like she borrowed this outfit from Heather Locklear’s 90210 wardrobe. The color of Angela Basset’s dress works for her (although the dress itself is kind of common and cheap looking) and the bag and shoes just don’t work.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, I hate Cate’s look from head to toe. I think I just don’t get her fashion sense. She has more misses than hits for me, although I think she’s very pretty.

      • Cecilia says:

I think Cate looks very Tilda Swinton-esque here. She definitely took a risk with this dress & I think she got it right, minus the shoes.

    • Lee says:

ITA. Imagine the dress without the belt, and tailored to fit properly, and it would be much better. It’s just all wrong as it is.

    • Steph says:

I agree. That is the ugliest dress I have *ever* seen. Ever.

  4. lisa2 says:

I don’t like this dress. maybe it’s the shoes. They look too bulky with it and cut her legs off at a bad point. I really have not liked a lot of what Cate has been wearing. I agree; I like the front of the dress, but again the back looks bulky. I think it may be too big for her in fact.

But let me say how great Angela Bassett looks in that dress. Girl was working it. One of my favorite looks of the night. And that girl that was handing out the awards.. MY best dress of the night.

    • Kiddo says:

I love this dress in spite of myself. The shoes aren’t my favorite with it. Something not up on the ankles might have been better, but they aren’t terrible. The belt could have been slightly smaller, but really, all of my objections are ridiculous quibbles. I even think it’s cute in the back.

  5. bettyrose says:

Angela Bassett FTW. Cate looks too upper crust try hard, and Lizzy looks uncomfortable.

  6. Anna says:

    Cate looks amaze.

  7. LAK says:

I love that bright red colour. On both of them.

  8. Maritza says:

Angela Basset looks really great, Cate’s shoes are awful and the dress I don’t like it. Elizabeth Moss looks like she is dressed for the office.

  9. kc says:

Cate Blanchett’s dress is nightmarishly ugly and does nothing for her; ditto her shoes. Since the Spirit awards are casual, she would have done better in a nice, simple Armani pantsuit, or something along those lines. Angela Bassett looks gorgeous, as usual.

  10. Teri says:

I’ve always loved Cate Blanchet’s style in the past but this season it’s been “WTF ?” look after the next. Angela on the other hand AMAZING!

  11. Jess says:

Angela wins this competition! She looks amazing!

  12. Ice Queen says:

I hate Kate’s footwear. Other than that-she’s amazing.

  13. Musi says:

Angela, Angela that fountain of youth. Looking very great. La blanchet Is Queen.

  14. Hiddlesgirl85 says:

Are Angela and her husband on the rocks? I’ve been wondering that for a while now. I mean I haven’t seen them tpgether in a bit, and Angela is without her ring at this event.

  15. MacScore says:

The proportions of the dress are wrong on Cate, not helped by the shoes; the dress from the back is a disaster too. But on the whole it’s an interesting, artsy-aesthetic choice, in keeping with her general style, I think.
WTF with the white blazer on E. Moss – looks AWFUL – totally out of proportion with the dress.

Now, let’s see if I can use the word ‘proportion’ one more time… ah yes… Angela Bassett’s proportions are perfect!

  16. RJ says:

Angela Bassett wins best dressed, hands down. She is 55 yrs old! Also-she received her MFA from Yale School of drama (her undergrad degree is from Yale too), just like Lupita 🙂 As a woman of color, I think it’s great to have some diverse role models for all little girls to look up to

  17. pru says:

    Cate looks very…………Cate.

  18. Sugar1 says:

And to think I thought that pastel pink dress w/ the giant bib that Cate wore at the “whatever I don’t recall award show” would be the worst…it now seems to be one of the better. Sorry Cate.
And the gold piece on the belt on top photo- is it suppose to be off center? If I had been there I would have walked up and centered it, “There fixed it for ya.”

  19. Mel says:

Cate is a fantastic actress, sounds like a lovely person and has developed into a truly beautiful woman – but her dressing sense is just awful, IMO.

Angela Bassett’s dress is fabulous, though. I want it.

  20. Aria says:

Elizabeth Moss looks like she has no neck. Not nice

  21. A Fan says:

Great colour(s) on her? = check
Great fit on her? = check
    Unique? = check

    [Folks, we’ve got a winner…]

  22. vangroovey says:

WTF Angela!? I’ve been binging on the show “Episodes” — and there is this great running gag on the show that one of the actresses, whose name is ‘Morning’, is WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY older than she appears. In one of the first episodes, when gossiping about said actress, the wardrobe guy says, “Somewhere there is a picture of Morning looking like all KINDS of sh*t!” HA! But yeah, I’m now convinced that Angela, too, has some “Dorian Gray pic” somewhere hidden in her attic! No, but seriously, DAYUM does she look good. And that color is doing all kinds of good things oh her (I don’t think most people could pull that color off….right?)

  23. TheCountess says:

Angela is my favorite, by far.

Elisabeth has extensions on, no? I thought her hair was still fairly short at the Globes. Her outfit is a mess.

  24. smee says:

I do not like Cate B’s dress. The material – ultra-suede? – looks bulky and the dress looks too big for her. I really don’t like the belt with it but I DESPISE her shoes. That clunky vamp looks terrible on everyone.

Angela Basset took a page out of the color book and she looks stunning. Nice cut on the dress too.

  25. yolie says:

    Angela Bassett for life!

  26. taxi says:

I like Cate’s dress but it needs flat sandals, not those shoes. Angela looks great & Moss looks like she grabbed whatever was lying around without ever checking a mirror.

  27. Malificent says:

Is Elizabeth Moss pregnant? The bright color and the longish jacket look like what you wear when you’re trying to hide an early pregnancy, but not be too obvious about it….

  28. Santolina says:

Lizzie Moss looks like she just ran off the Mad Men set as Peggy Olsen and forgot to switch back to being herself; we’re used to seeing her look much more chic and glamorous. I do like Cate’s dramatic print dress and belt combo, and Angela nails it — looks like she was born in that dress.

  29. Lucy2 says:

    Holy Moly Angela Bassett! Amazing!
I don’t love Cate’s but she makes it work better than others could.
