Jennifer Lawrence in red peplum Dior at the Oscars: stunning or understated?

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence wore Dior to the Oscars last night. We all knew she’d wear Dior. The challenge was to see how Dior would dress her considering she fell last year while thinking about cake. In the end, Jennifer ended up wearing a red, peplum-ed look similar to Charlize Theron’s Oscar dress from last year. There’s no way JLaw could fall in this dress, right? Well, she still tripped. 10 seconds after she stepped onto the red carpet, she fell all over the place. You can see the GIF of that moment here.

Luckily, Jennifer did not fall onstage while presenting the Best Actor award to Matthew McConaughey. JLaw kept her words simple and unmemorable, and I think that was the point with this Dior dress too. This dress is JLaw’s attempt to fade into the background while still attending the required functions. She was so relieved when Lupita Nyong’o won Best Supporting Actress! The two did playfully wrestle with the statuette backstage.

Jennifer’s Neil Lane jewelry was gorgeous, and she wore her necklace backwards like she did last year. Her makeup was really off though. Under the stage lights, JLaw’s makeup looked made her look like she’d been in the tanning bed and wearing goggles for way too long. The eyeliner was too severe and made her eyes look too small. Maybe she’s really trying to disappear.

Jennifer Lawrence

JLaw switched outfits for the Vanity Fair afterparty. Instead of seizing the moment to wear Calvin Klein, she chose this stiff Tom Ford dress. Ugh. This looks like something Kris Jenner would wear. The dress also includes sheer panels on the side (see gallery) so you can see that JLaw isn’t wearing any underwear.

Jennifer Lawrence

Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen went for a romantic dream in Monique Lhullier. I love the pattern on this dress, and this was a full on gown. The fabric looked shiny and soft, and the cut of the bodice was just right. Chrissy was so excited to be at the Oscars, so she went all out. You could also see her tweeting from the red carpet. Soft romantic waves and a berry-pink lip added to the romance.

Olivia Wilde

Olivia Wilde wore black Valentino with a distinguishing white panel in the back. Livvy is about two months away from giving birth, and it’s so hard to dress a bump on the red carpet. She looks gorgeous and sophisticated. The dress seems a little boring from the front, but the backless detail and panel added some fun.

Olivia Wilde

Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick wore J. Mendel, and I think this dress was a little too sophisticated for her. This is certainly an ornate and interesting look, and I think Anna may have been able to “old” it up by wearing some glamorous waves. This is a gorgeous dress, but I don’t think it was right for Anna.

Loved Jennifer’s red dress. It fit her perfectly and I thought she looked stunning.

Olivia’s dress was great from the back but I would have preferred it in a different color – I think that would have made it more interesting from the front.

    • MCraw says:

I was kinda underwhelmed by JLaw. Peplum is so over, she’s done red two years ago and that hair belonged to Bette Midler.

Also, I’ve been a Jennifer fan for so long, not understanding how anyone can dislike her. Until she presented last night. How obnoxious and immature did she seem? Like a kid sitting at the adults table. She needed to stick to script. The shtick is over.

      • Lis says:

She didn’t offend anyone. Ppl talk to audience members from the stage all the time.

      • V4Real says:

What are you laughing at said Jen to the audience.

I still like Jen but she needs to know when to STFU and yes stick to script.

      • MCraw says:

She said “shut up, why are you laughing.” Then said “I’m keeping my eye on you.” Or something like that to whoever was laughing at her off camera. Point is, to me, as a fan, she was obnoxious. This is not your moment. Focus on your job to present the Best Actor.

      • Juliette says:

I agree, it seemed unprofessional and immature to be shouting at someone “I’m still watching you.” – It didn’t help that the camera did not pan to who she was speaking to, so we were all left clueless. Plus, it was the end of the night. Everyone was like just stick to your script, announce the winner and get the heck off the stage.

When I see Jennifer wearing the backwards necklace, I always have a flash of that Regina George mean-girl moment “stop trying to make backwards necklaces happen, they’re not going to happen!”

      • littlestar says:

YES, Lawrence’s hair was AWFUL. So dated looking and made her appear to be much older than she is. And I too was really annoyed by her “what are you laughing” at speech. Really, girl? You think that’s funny? Well, I think it’s annoying because you’re trying to make a moment that is not about you, about you.

      • TG says:

I think Jennifer is the Julia Roberts of her generation. Every moment has to be about her, even while she fronts like she doesn’t want the attention.

      • Jh says:

Her Hilary Clinton hair ruined everything for me. So disappointing.

      • linnja says:

I Think J.Law seems to be a nice girl etc. But her styling have Always been horrible from the get go IMO! I don’t understand it? She is Beautiful she has Dior (!) at her service! Yet her hair and makeup is aaalways extremely bad! Why? She has such a pretty face but they don’t seem to know what to do with it? And her hair….please….it’s also been a mess most of the time. From that dreadful harsh brown that looked very “homecoloured” to this Hillary Clinton style?
And the clothes honestly …yes it is a nice dress of corse but come on!!!! There are billions of different types of dressdesigns why Always go with the same plain?

Sorry I am, NOT bashing J Law but she seems stuck with the worst stylists in Hollywood esp the hair and makeup people!

      • annie says:

People are (probably understandably) annoyed with all her hype, so when they decide they don’t like somebody they view everything they do or say in the worst possible light. So much pathetic

      • MisJes says:

Oh, for eff’s sake. It was intended in a lighthearted way. Jared Leto and others in their section were laughing at the gestures Ellen was making behind Jennifer, and she made some off the cuff remarks, in a joking manner. I agree with Annie above, the bashing of her for every little thing is pathetic.

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

Jennifer looked bad. The dress was boring, her makeup was bad and it made her eyes look really small and with that hair she looked like Hillary Clinton.
Was the yelling to the audience in the script or did she do it spontaneously?

Olivia was one of the best dressed of the night. The dress, the hair, the makeup – perfection.

      Anna had an ugly dress.
Chrissy looked okay. Her face is really weird, did she have any work done?

      • Kelly says:

The dress was appropriate for someone who probably knew she was not going to win. But it wasn’t spectacular or boring it was just sort of there.

I didn’t think she should have worn red because she been to the oscars 3 times and wore red her first and it was that long ago. It was to similar.

And she didn’t “shout” she was talking to someone in the front row, not yelling at the entire audience which the previous post makes it seem

      • Decloo says:

I agree with you that OLIVIA was one of if not THE best dressed. Her high neck, sleeveless dress was so elegant and fit her and her bump just perfectly. So glad she swept her hair down over her monster forehead as it looked really pretty. LOve the white panel at the back and the jewelry too.

    • Lemon says:

Definitely a simple dress, but I thought she looked gorgeous.

    • Brittaki says:

I have to whole-heartedly disagree with Bedhead about Anna Kendrick’s dress. That thing is a monstrosity and should have never come anywhere near an Oscars ceremony.

    • Fan says:

I love the dress and think it fits perfectly. I love her styling. Thought she looked beautiful.

  2. Sandra says:

J Law looks gorgeous. Love her so much and I am so happy she didn’t win. She’s got a long career ahead with many other chances to win, this was perfect.

The peplum, though, I didn’t like.

  3. Marianne says:

Jennifer’s dress wasn’t my favourite look last night, but she still looked really nice. I thought it was a nice touch to give her a backwards necklace like she wore last year.

I didn’t like the red flowers in Anna’s dress, otherwise I loved the look.

Olivia was definitely the best dressed pregnant star.

    • Dara says:

In the first photo of Olivia she didn’t even look pregnant, let alone seven months along. She really look beautiful from all angles though.

  4. PunkyMomma says:

    Loved Anna’s dress.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I loved the dress and her in it. One of the better looks of the night, imo.

    • queenfreddiemercury says:

      She did look good.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

I totally agree. One of the most interesting dresses of the evening, lots going on there to look at.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Hmm. I really didn’t like Anna’s dress, it was one of my least favorites of the evening. THe flowers seemed dated to me. Different dresses for different folks, keeps it interesting!

  5. smee says:

I’m not crazy about the way JLaw’s dress fits in the bust – kinda low-riding. I do like how’s she’s wearing her necklace – really shows off her beautiful neck.

Oliva W is stunning! Her whole look gives me a 1960s feel, but just a little. Very flattering dress.

  6. Lily says:

I loved Jenn’s dress she looked beautiful. But her hair is in that awkward stage of being too short but not long enough to style better. She can rock the backwards necklace though.

Oh Anna. I don’t know anyone who could make that dress work.

  7. QQ says:

I think she did Good for Dior (no more ball gowns!, she and Nicholas looked great and happy!) LOVED her party dress!, and Hair of course!

Crissy didn’t do anything for me except tweet hilariously about the happenings so that is always good

Anna Kendrick’s dress was atrocious and so sad for a young chick with a great figure!

  8. blue marie says:

I like the color but not the dress on JLaw, and the second dress is blah.
I can’t believe I’m about to say this cause she annoys me but Olivia looked the best to me out of all of these. I like her hair and make up.

  9. mia girl says:

Jennifer looked great…she and Hoult are very cute together.

I have never seen a nominee so happy to loose/see another nominee win as Lawrence was last night. Which kind of makes me like her even more. She gets it.

    • Lily says:

She was beyond relieved! And I think she was genuinely happy for Lupitia, if you read her lips after the speech it seemed liked she was saying “that was great”.

  10. bros says:

jennifer’s dress was a bit boring and the seaming looked cheap. dior keeps insisting on dressing her in these column dresses that smash down her magnificent rack! let the ladies out to play a bit! her makeup was really harsh with too much undereye liner-she’s looking like a cross between ellen barkin, the duchess of cambridge, and Mystique from X-men.

  11. Ice Maiden says:

I’m getting Hilary Clinton vibes from the first photo.

  12. Aria says:

She looks older. Not my favorite.

    • Kay says:

I think that’s because of the hair. Its no longer short and sassy it’s at the mom length now, she is probably growing it out.

  13. CC says:

I like it, it wasn’t a “grab an award” dress like hers was last year. So I think that she dressed for a non-winner. Which is perfect. And I totally believe that she didn’t want to win this one. Not worth the backlash over an Oscar in a supporting role when she already has one for a starring role. See Meryl Streep (not saying JLaw is like/thenext Meryl Streep, time has to show it in itself, and it’s very difficult to sustain that momentum) with her mountain of nominations and not so many wins, In the end it’s just right, After you win 1-2, a nomination is all you really need unless your part is incredibly strong for that year. Not worth the backlash otherwise.

  14. Nya says:

    Jennifer looked terrible in everything.

  15. magpie says:

I love Anna, but her dress was just awful.

  16. Renee28 says:

Jennifer’s dress is better than most of the Dior she’s been wearing but her hair and makeup looked matronly.

  17. foxyw says:

Anna Kendrick is soooooo visually boring. She has no style and has one of those bland, boring faces that will always be meh regardless of how much you make her up. This isn’t a comment on her acting ability or other talents or her general attractiveness. I mean, Jonah Hill is an uggo, but his face isn’t boring. I just feel like every time I see Anna Kendrick, it’s like there’s nothing there. Everything about her look is bland.

As for J. Law, she was styled like an old lady. As far as Olivia Wilde goes, I don’t see how you guys can dis Kerry Washington’s look in another post and then be mostly positive about this one. Kerry looked so much better than Olivia. Chrissy Teigen’s dress … Oh My God I Want It I Must Have It. John Legend looks adorable, too, btw.

  18. Andrea1 says:

So happy American Hustle got a big fat goose egg. She doesn’t look bad – its just really boring seeing her in the same strapless Dior gown over & over again but in a different colour. So overrated. And didn’t Amanda Siegfried wear her necklace like that last awards season?
The way that she reacts when she falls is so over the top &attention seeking it just really puts me off her. Besides Priyanka Chopra wore it better
    http://www.vogue.in/sites/default/files/imagecache/galleriffic_slide/article/slideshow/17891/Priyanka-Chopra-walked-the-Red-Carpet-at-the-59th-Idea-Filmfare-Awards-2013-at-Yash-Raj.jpg
And hey am not a hater before am eaten raw.

    • TG says:

J-Law also wore a backwards necklace to the Oscars last year and a red dress a few years ago and she fell last year and this year. (I still maintain that was deliberate and now am starting to wonder about this year’s fall as well.) She is getting predictable and boring. I know I am being harsh on her and I actually still like her I just wish she would own being a successful woman and actress. Why does she have to act like a child and try to get attention for not being graceful. She should learn from Lupita on how to be confident and gracious without offending anyone and not ever having to act stupid and “awe shucks” about everything.

      • Lou says:

Why does everyone rag on JLaw for not being like Lupita? They’re two different women with two different personalities. You can like and appreciate both women, you know.

      • MisJes says:

Agreed, Lou. It’s pathetic. You don’t need to tear one woman down to compliment another.

  19. Ice Queen says:

The dress is wearing Anna instead of other way around. I love Olivia’s dress. She looks great. Chrissy looks beautiful. Ps: I love it when someone wears a necklace backwards. It looks very chic.

  20. Mia4S says:

She won me over with her sheer relief at losing! Smart girl. If the presenting was awkward…well she was in good company last night (poor direction or something?) I also don’t buy that the fall was staged. Too early, bad angle if you were going for attention. Basically Katniss is a klutz. 🙂

  21. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Meh. She looks really pretty. Dress is sort of a yawn and I’m not a fan of the backwards necklace unless the back of the dress is the focal point.

  22. Alina says:

IMO a red gown is always good, and this one has a fantastic red! It´s not wow, but one of the good dresses this year!
Make-up (hello tiny eyes) plus horrible hair style. No no no. Terrible!
The Tom Ford dress looks cheap and it doesn´t suit her… i hate dresses with see through panels on the side! That´s never classy!

Olivia and Anna: lame, forgettable dresses 🙁

Chrissy Tegan: i like it, except that it should be longer in front. In such a beautiful gown you shouldn´t show shoes… I prefer floor length dresses

  23. queenfreddiemercury says:

I hope the Dior contract is over soon because they do nothing for Jen. She needs to hook up with Calvin Klein. Anyway the red color is nice but the dress is isn’t anything special. Oliva is the only one that looked good.

    • TG says:

And Jen does nothing for Dior. If I were the execs at Dior I would be p*ssed at the way Jen has behaved this awads season wearing Dior and acting like she is annoyed to be in their dresses. She is getting paid millions to represent them and this is how she earns her money? If she doesn’t want to wear DIor than don’t sign on with them.

  24. Lucy2 says:

The best Dior she’s worn this season- looks good on her, but overall not that exciting, which may have been intentional on her part.

  25. Mel says:

JLaw’s dress looked like a cheap version of Michelle Williams’ LV gown two years ago.

  26. serena says:

I like JLaw attitude..trying not to stand out and everything but those two dresses were so boring (and the after-party dress was simply awful) also super bad hair and make up. You can do better girl!
    Anna Kendricks didn’t score better..such a pity, she’s really a beautiful girl.

  27. kibbles says:

She looks fine, but she looks so much younger and sexier when she wears Calvin Klein. I am so over her Dior dresses. This outfit and hairstyle ages her immensely. I’ve seen her look good with her short hairdo, but last night it did not look good. I like it more when it is kind of spunky rather than combed back. So many people compared her to Hillary Clinton last night and that is because this style makes her look much older than 23-years-old.

  28. shellybean says:

Jennifer looked great in that red dress. Very understated and lovely. That Tom Ford dress is all kinds of fug, though.

  29. Grant says:

I loved Jennifer’s second dress, the Tom Ford.

  30. hmmm says:

I hate stylists. They”ve taken the fun out of awards shows.

  31. mar says:

    Olivia was perfection.

    Anna’s dress is AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!

Jennifer was ok, she rarely wows me, but her personality rocks!

  32. Diana says:

I didn’t mind Jennifer’s dress, I thought it was ok. Now, the hair, goodness gracious, i hated that hair with all my might. Anna K looked lovely.

  33. Nerd Alert says:

I love JLaw but she did not bring it. The problem, IMO, with her makeup is that she should have darkened her brows a bit to go with the smoky eye. When someone wears a lot of eyeliner/shadow I think it looks strange to have weak brows. Also the hair is bad and I have a permanent hate-on for almost every peplum, including hers.

Livvy, whom I usually like less, looks beautiful.

  34. Musi says:

I said wow when I saw her. It isn’t the best she can do but I will take it she looks lovely.

  35. Vicky says:

I don’t understand the hype about this girl. She’s so vanilla to me. Boring, clumsy, no sophistication whatsoever. Goofy and acts like a boy. So many talented young actresses out there and all the spotlights are on her. I don’t even find her that pretty. Her short hair is terrible. Her face has nothing special. She’s worse than Reese Witherspoon. I never understood what they found in her either. Blah..

    • MonicaQ says:

She’s relatable. I don’t like the Hunger Games or can name anything else she’s done, but damn if I can remember falling and biting it in my prom dress. It’s nice to be flawless and perfect but sometimes, the scruffy cat out of the litter gets the love. “Acting like a boy” isn’t a bad thing either.

      • StaCat1 says:

+ 1 on acting like a boy. Why can’t a girl do things a boy can? And why is it a big deal?

  36. Lucy says:

I thought Jen looked really good at the ceremony!! I do dislike her party dress, though. And she looked like she was having a really nice time!! The three other ladies were very pretty as well.

  37. Janet says:

JLaw’s dress would have looked a lot better without the peplum.

  38. Zigggy says:

I liked Olivia’s look best of all, I think. Loved the splash of white at the back, plus the black & white jewelry.
I hate Jennifer’s old lady hair, didn’t like the dress. I’m a fan but I’m finding it harder- she is kind of annoying. We get it- you’re cool, laid back, funny. Just present like everyone else. Oh and she totally looked like she got sunburned with sunglasses on.

  39. TJ says:

Olivia Wilde looked amazing, easily Top 5 for me from everybody who attended at the Oscar ceremony this year. Hair, makeup, dress – all looked perfect. She and Sudeikis were so happy and joked with everyone around on the red carpet. Can’t believe she is almost 8 month pregnant already.

Jennifer Lawrence was nice, but her eyes looked a little smaller then usual this time, don’t you think? Anyway, I liked in both of her dresses yesterday.

Anna Kendrick is lovely as usual (I saw pictures where she joked around with her fellow Drinking Buddies co-starts Wilde &Sudeikis), but this dress she wearing here is nothing special to me(I know she changed dresses for the afterparty, she looked better in that IMO).

  40. eliza says:

JLaw needs to fire her stylist. Bad dress, hair, makeup, repeater jewelry trend. Travesty. And she needs to go away for a while so she can 1) get out of the spotlight and be missed again and 2) grow out that terrible haircut. I know…Judge Judy over here… I love her son consider this constructive criticism.

  41. poppy says:

jLaw should needs a perma-smile or she looks fug.

  42. StaCat1 says:

I know it’s now fashionable to dump on jennifer lawrence. As it was popular to gush a month ago… (I hear the “cool” 11 year olds amongst my daughter’s peers saying how they “hate” FROZEN now too). And so it goes….

I thought she looked amazing head to toe. I am not a stylist but thought she looked incredible and elegant. The one thing I do like her is her akwardness- I can relate. People don’t like someone who is over rehearsed and read as false (ie Anne Hathaway) and they now don’t like someone who is spontaneous– that may read as immature (ie: J Lawrence). it really is no-win.

    • Tessy says:

I like Jennifer too, she’s cute. So what if she occasionally makes bad fashion choices, they all do.

Give it another month and everybody will be ragging on Princess Lupita and Queen Cate too.

      • Tessy says:

But geez I just scrolled up the page and saw young Hillary Clinton, I really didn’t notice that before. Please, don’t ever do that again, Jen.

      • StaCat1 says:

awwww….leave Hil alone..the woman has enough cheap shots taken at her on her looks (that male politicians DON’T get). 😉

  43. Avilita says:

There was no need for her to talk to someone off-camera while presenting an Academy Award. Why can’t she ever do something in a straight-forward, normal way?

    • Lou says:

What? she does tons of things “normally”. What did she do that attracted attention at all the other award shows this year? Nothing.

What is everyone’s problem with her? She’s not Lindsay Lohan running over strollers, for eff’s sake. She’s just a nice girl who does her job. You don’t have to like her personality, you’re not her friend.

    • Marianne says:

I dont see you complaining about Kevin Spacey making fun of the back-up singer who was there for that documentary.

I dont see how some people get passes and others get condemned. She barely did anything the whole ceremony in a “look at me” fashion.

  44. Mel M says:

JLaw’s dress was fine but yeah her hair and makeup was terrible.

I loved Olivia and usually I’m not a fan.

I am probably the only person who thought Chrissy looked terrible. I don’t like or understand that dress. There are elements that are gorgeous but as a whole not my cup of tea. I also think her hair looks like mine at the end of the day when I take my hair down from it’s messy bun, I don’t get this styling.

  45. Jayna says:

She looked average in everything, hair, makeup, gown.

  46. willowtree1921 says:

j-law is so cute and has a beautiful body but her makeup really ages her in this. she’s around my age and when you’re this young, less really is more.

  47. willowtree1921 says:

also, for the people comparing olivia wilde’s look to elsa’s, people should remember that olivia is much less pregant than she is and not ready to topple over any second. both of them are beautiful women but really, every pregnancy is different.

  48. tredd says:

Jennifer looks amazing. She needs to stick with whomEVER her stylist is. I almost forget what comes out of her mouth. EVERY time she opens it.

  49. Abby says:

I loved Olivia’s hair. I would like to do mine that way for a formal occasion. I liked Jennifer’s dress, but not the hair. I also liked her party dress–so pretty! Chrissy… i liked the dress but she really needs some bangs or a different part, ya know?
