Taylor Momsen: ‘Fame is so fleeting & stupid… tabloids will always spin sh-t’

How I have missed my beloved Raccoon McPantless. For a few years, it seemed like the only stories about her involved NSFW music videos, artwork or photoshoots, but Taylor Momsen sat down with The Daily Beast for an interesting interview (you can read the full thing here). Taylor – Raccoon! – is now 20 years old (she’s only a few months younger than Miley Cyrus) and her band, The Pretty Reckless, are pretty successful. The music is widely praised and the band has toured extensively. This is her thing now. She doesn’t want to be an actress anymore, she wants to be a rock star. And I think she is. Here are some highlights from the Daily Beast piece:

On fame: “Fame is so fleeting and stupid. Once, my tampon string was put on the Internet when I was 15 because some a–hole shot up my dress and it made big headlines. For a year, if you Googled ‘Taylor Momsen’ the tampon photo was the first thing that came up. When that happens, you just go, I really just don’t give a f–k, and you close the computer. People are going to say what they’re going to say, and the tabloids will always spin s–t.”

Being a child actor: “I started modeling at 2, and then acting at 3, and then Gossip Girl when I was 12, so I wasn’t really making my own decisions. When I got to a place where I realized I was in control of my own life, and had found the right band, and everything was coming to fruition, it wasn’t even a question: I was going to quit my day job. I came to set every day with a f–kin’ guitar. But I’m very lucky that the producers were nice enough to write me out, allow me to tour, and pursue my passion, because they very easily could have told me to go f–k myself and keep me on the show.”

Touring the world changed her perspective: “The power lies in the few and then you witness so much poverty, depression, and repression, and it changed my perspective on everything. I came back and thought, It’s a f–ked up world.”

Hurricane Sandy ruined their second album: “We lost everything. The biggest thing we lost was time and we had such a good vibe going, and had built up this room at Water Music with our specs, so it was perfect. We lost $500,000 worth of gear, including a beautiful piano from the 1900s, guitars, recordings, a MIDI console. Hazmat had to come in and clear all the sludge and sewage.”

Why she’s always naked in videos & album art: “I wanted it to be striking,” she says of the cover. “I came up with a symbol, the cross with the arrow going down, which symbolizes Going to Hell. It was an elaborate process but the nudity came from: when you come into this world, there’s nothing but your soul, and you leave with nothing but your soul. People have misinterpreted it and turned it into something else, but that’s just tabloid manipulation.”

Sex & rock n’ roll: “Sexuality and rock ‘n’ roll go hand-in-hand and have since the beginning of time, and if anyone thinks I’m doing anything more controversial than f–kin’ Led Zeppelin, you’re insane, because I can see Robert Plant’s f–kin’ d–k… you know?”

[From The Daily Beast]

Such a delicate flower. Actually, I kind of prefer a tough kid (so hard, yo) who has spent the last three years dedicated to delivering on their “hardness” and owning it. I feel like this is who Taylor really is – this isn’t some Miley Cyrus-esque makeover involving twerking, nor is this Bieber-esque frontin’. Raccoon McPantless is pretending to have a softer side. She really is THIS hardcore, y’all. And why not? I like it.

I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I was surprised at how much I liked one of her songs that came on the radio one day.

She’s correct about the tabloids. Look at how many of them were insisting Mick broke up with L’Wren all based off of one anonymous quote from a “supposed” friend of L’Wren and that had to do with her suicide? Even if he had broken up with her, he still wasn’t responsible because she was a troubled woman but I was shocked at how many sources were running with an anonymous quote (despite Mick denying it and most of her friends tweeting sympathy at Mick). The tabloids seem to spin for the most salacious thing or what they think the audiences wants and will print anything at this point (probably because US libel laws are so relaxed). I have fun reading celebrity gossip, but I always take it was a huge grain of salt and especially when it comes to certain sources because they all spin or make things up the majority of the time.

or like that story that wanted to make us believe Phillip Seymour Hoffman had a gay affair. published a couple of days after his death. very classy. at least the guy who was supposed to be his lover sued them.

    • IzzyB says:

I’ve heard a few of their songs on the radio and I was pleasantly surprised too.

    • pamspam says:

I went to a Pretty Reckless show about 2 years ago. They were really good, and she has quite a set of pipes!

  2. Dani2 says:

Can’t believe she’s only 20, I was positive that she was at least 25.

And about the whole fame/tabloids thing, this isn’t news to anyone, water is wet etc.

    • bettyrose says:

IKR. She was only 12 on the first season of GG?? migawd. She was playing a 14 year old and looked 16.

  3. Samanthalous says:

This chick needs to put the eye pencils down!

    • Kiddo says:

And how. You ain’t kidding. If it wasn’t tragic enough with the glopping and heavy-handedness of black, she had to take it one step further and use orangey-red burnt sienna in the corners which, from a distance, screams eye irritation.

    • Isadora says:

      + 10000000

  4. bns says:

Can we not give her attention, please? It’s been nice not hearing from her.

  5. Lucy2 says:

I admit, I kind of like her voice and a few songs. She seems a bit more together than she used too, but who knows.
But is it just me or does her face look totally different?

    • nicole says:

Probably because she has aged from 15 to 20.

      • lucy2 says:

Probably, or it might be that weird eye makeup.

      • nicole says:

Hahaha, yes. Raccoon masks with red highlights is a deceptive trick that I’m sure we will all be using one day to make people second guess our ages 😉 Trends have to start somewhere.

  6. blue marie says:

I had completely forgotten about her, so I guess she’s right.

  7. NerdMomma says:

Well, I’ll throw in my two cents… I love posts about Taylor. She’s fun, she’s crazy, and she’s interesting. I was pleasantly shocked at what a great voice she has. I am all for her crazy eye makeup. Girls can have fun with makeup, we don’t just have to try to be as “pretty” as possible.

    • bettyrose says:

I like the eyeliner too, so help me. I still cringe in Breakfast Club when Molly Ringwald teaches Ally Sheety that popular pretty girls don’t wear heavy eye makeup.

      • Kiddo says:

I saw that (Breakfast Club, a few months back) and I liked Sheedy’s before look better than the princessy after. She had limited black liner rather than overall block shadow, no sickly color highlights, (the burnt sienna corners are killing it for me here). If she’s (Momsen) going for the ‘not pretty’ look, I respect that, then she succeeded, and to each, his own, in that aspect.

    • magz says:

      second!

  8. LAK says:

Does it make her more authentic to have such fried extensions?

Girl, you have fake hair. Go have it done properly.

  9. MonicaQ says:

Her band is coming to the Rockfest here in Tampa. My husband dubbed her “The Emo Panda” years ago. I’ve never heard any of her music so it looks like I get to see. I’m so excited -.-

    /not excited at all

  10. GeeMoney says:

I was a little disappointed with the way she left Gossip Girl, but after reading this interview, I’ve gone from disliking her to thinking that she’s pretty cool. She comes off as very outspoken yet confident… she gets mad props for that.

  11. roxy750 says:

She needs a dose of self confidence.

  12. Lucy says:

I really like her and I love her band. It’s nice to see her receiving some love in here. Also, what happened with her studio sucks. I know many other people have lost a lot more than her but still, it doesn’t make her loss any less serious. It was something really important to her.

  13. shellybean says:

I love Taylor. I’ll take her over Miley any day. Taylor has a pretty amazing voice. I’ve seen her and her band twice at House of Blues and they were pretty bad-ass. They remind me of the 80s hair bands I grew up loving.

  14. TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

    Fame is nothing she has to worry about since she has none: when you’re doing Macy’s ads you’re not edgy, you’re a sellout like most pop stars – btw, when there are excellent female artists out there like Esperanza Spalding, Whitney Howard of the Alabama Shakes and Gabriela of Rodrigo and Gabriela, why bother with this desperate to be famous girl whose music is a cipher;
And her moniker from someone on this site is RacoonMcPantless. Quite appropriate.

  15. Pandora says:

When my teenage daughter wakes up after neglecting to remove yesterdays mascara I call her Racoon McPantless, 5 years later or w/e and we still find that name you ladies made up laugh out loud hilarious…….

  16. Jessica says:

She’s only 20? I thought she was 25 like four years ago.

  17. cerebralmind says:

@Lark – That’s how they (tabloids) make $$$$. I read magazines and this site to kill time. You have to take what they print with a grain of salt because 98% of the time it’s fiction, but 2% of the time it’s true (John Edwards scandal the National Enquirer broke that news first).

  18. silly you says:

i have never doubted my little j. she sounds legit. this over katy perry all day every freaking day.

  19. Lou says:

I like her. She actually lives up to what she says, she’s not hypocritical like Miley and Katy. I also like what she said about the GG producers being cool. She’s obviously grateful for her opportunities and not trashing her past stuff, which is nice.

But hot damn, can’t believe she still wears that makeup. Props for commitment, but ew.

  20. Caroline says:

    How is she only 20?

  21. Luna says:

OMG the tampon photo was horrible!!! Whoever took a photo of that ought to be castrated!!

  22. Lauraq says:

I love her music. She has incredible pipes and she writes her own stuff. Does she need to be naked all the time? Maybe not, but she’s young with a nice body-let her be naked for awhile if she wants to be.
