Does Prince Charles tell William that he is ‘naive & stupid’ about ivory?

Well, I was wrong. In the earlier Duchess Camilla post, I was wrong when I suggested that William and Kate were probably on some undercover vacation. They’re not! Or at least William is not. William made an appearance in Gosport, England today at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum. He arrived by helicopter, spoke to well-wishers, visited the HMS Alliance (a WWII-era sub) and handed out prizes to poetry students. I didn’t realize before now that William’s honorary title is Commodore-in-Chief for Submarines. That’s a badass title. I want to be known as Commodore-in-Chief for Chocolate. You can read more about William’s trip here. There was some sort of toast involved. Is that Scotch?

Meanwhile, you might remember that William was speaking out against the ivory trade this year. To his credit, he’s long been involved in The Tusk Trust and anti-poaching efforts. The story last year was that William is so anti-poaching and so against the ivory trade that he wanted to destroy all of the ivory art pieces in the royal collection. Now UK sources claim that Prince Charles told him to STFU.

Prince Charles is said to have branded son William “naive” for suggesting Buckingham Palace should destroy its priceless ivory collection. Royal insiders say the pair have had a “frank exchange of words”. Charles is said to have rebuked Wills, 31, after he reportedly told a zoologist he would “like to see all the ivory owned by Buckingham Palace destroyed”.

A source said: “William was left in no doubt he should have chosen his words more carefully. Charles thought the remarks were somewhat naive and stupid when you consider the vast collection of ivory held at the Palace. He seems to believe there is a vast difference between rightly calling for action against illegal traders and to call for Buckingham Palace to rid itself of an enormously important and historical collection of artifacts. It was a typical father and son encounter really, with Charles trying to use his greater experience to try to educate his son.”

Wills is said to have told chimpanzee expert Dr Jane Goodall, 79, he wanted to rid Buckingham Palace of ivory at the London summit in February on the illegal wildlife trade. Charles, 65, and Prince Harry, 29, also attended. Charles said in a film at the time: “We have come together, as father and son, to lend our voices to the growing global effort to combat the illegal wildlife trade.”

Much of William’s campaigning has focused on the African elephant yet Charles recognises the importance of the palace ivory collection, which includes a throne that belonged to Queen Victoria. The two are said to have traded words before Wills and his family went on a state visit to Australia. But a Palace source denied the disagreement had been heated, adding: “They have not fallen out.”

[From The Mirror]

I think this probably happened. The Mirror is hyping it and trying to make it sound like Charles and William aren’t speaking to each other or whatever, but I’ll believe that Charles had words with William and that Charles is trying to get William to either be less hyperbolic or to simply stop talking about all of the ivory pieces in the royal collection.

Prince Charles should tell him he’s naive and stupid about the ivory because that’s exactly what he is.

  2. Mia V. says:

Well, Charles sounds as hypocritical and the need of monarchy today.

  3. LAK says:

What shall we do about William?

  4. Esti says:

Perfect example of the tabloids straight-up inventing Royal stories. I’d be fully willing to believe that Charles told Will to stop talking about the palace ivory, but there’s zero chance he would have said it in front of someone who would leak it to the press.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Esti•

The palaces have plenty of people that leak to the press. However, I don’t think they had a falling out. Charles probably told him there might be a better way to approach this but the papers spin it to sound more dramatic than it really was.

      • Esti says:

Sure, there are people that leak. But do you really think Charles would give Will a stern talking to in front of an audience? If he said anything, I would expect it to be when the two were alone. Especially if the point was to stop people talking about the palace’s ivory collection — this would have exactly the opposite effect.

      • LadySlippers says:

        But Esti,

They are rarely ever alone. Servants and staff surround them constantly and after growing up in it — it seems normal.

I don’t think it was a ‘stern’ conversation either. It was probably spun that way to seem more dramatic.

  5. Talie says:

I thought it was odd at the time to make that statement since those pieces are historic artifacts and you shouldn’t just destroy parts of history! You just hope no one continues to make objects like that again.

    • fairy godmother says:

      So do I Talie!

I think Willie forgets it is NOT up to him to decide such things- nor will it ever!

Those artifacts belong to the people and not him. The artifacts can be used as a life long lesson to future generations regarding the cruelties of man inflicted on innocent animals which caused unspeakable harm and to the ecosystem.

I only wish an educational program would be implemented. It would show people rhino horns and elephant tusks and all the other animals that are slaughtered for greed and spreading false beliefs that the parts do NOT cause some “magical” thing if man consumes it. If only it was understood rhino horn has about as much power or nutritional value as nail clippings. It would be easier for the poachers to pass off ashes as such magical cures than cause any further harm to these precious animals.

Kaiser, I still think you were right. It’s been a few weeks since Australia, they probably were on vacation.

    • bluhare says:

William was in the US last weekend, but no Kate sightings. I wonder if she went to stay with her parents.

      • AM says:

My guess is she’s in Berkshire, but there haven’t been reports of an increased security presence up there.

I’m no fan of prince baldy and usually have sort of respect for Charles because of his life long work, but talk about pot calling kettle black! Charles is such a double standard douche, he has some nerve to tell William to STFU when he goes around interfering in politics, writing secret letters to politicians that have to be banned unlawfully by supreme court despite freedom of information act and keep forcing and preaching about his own environment ‘concerns’ while traveling in helicopters, royal train etc. All in all if Willy ever decides to up his engagements then he’ll be far superior royal the Chuck who is unsuitable for so many reasons. At least Willy is too lazy to interfere with politics or pushing his own agenda on common public. Who knew laziness and disintrest will be a blessing in disguise when compared to Chuck.

  8. InvaderTak says:

On the subject of the actual issue, I agree with Charles. Destroying the pieces isnt right, but making more is unacceptable. What he’s actually be destroying is historical artifacts which in and of itself is bad. Education is key. Don’t sensor history, teach it! Keep offensive things and be honest about it. Keep racial slurs in books. Keep artworks the way they were intended and teach people about them, the good and the bad. I don’t think sensoring the ills of history does any good; in fact I think it’s worse than the supposed offence of the artwork.

    • Olenna says:

      ITA…lest we forget.

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

Destroying such an historical collection may also make ivory even more valuable on the black markets, including poachers teaming up with other counterfeiters to sell replicas to the highest bidder.

    • kri says:

Nicely put, @InvaderTak. Although I am so sickened by poaching I want to poach the poachers, I cannot see the logic or merit in destroying historical objects, either. What I want to know is, what evil bastards are still buying ivory, because these elephants are still beig murdered. Maybe Wills should steal a chopper and go poacher-hunting.

    • fairy godmother says:

      Sorry InvaderTak-

I just posted something above @ education before I scrolled down to read your comment.

I guess great minds think alike! : )

He’s drinking rum – that is the traditional tipple for the Navy.

Winston Churchill , when he was First Lord of the Admiralty had a famous quote :, according to ‘an ear-witness’, “he was having trouble with some of his admirals at a strategy meeting. One of them accused him of having impugned the traditions of the Royal Navy, provoking the reply: ‘And what are they? They are rum, sodomy and the lash’. “

  10. racer says:

I suspect most of the Royals are naive and stupid when it comes to the realities of real issues in the world. Their “help” is largely based on photo-ops, shaking hands, kissing babies, speeches about empathy, being the face of charities to garner more donations….and the basic British reasoning for keeping them “they bring in money from tourism old chap!”

These people are not political. They are like surgery flowers on top of a cake- nice to look at decorations but serving no real purpose.

  11. Simi says:

Prince william really irritates me! To levels I never though possible!

  12. Ravensdaughter says:

I understand William’s zeal; I nagged my mother about her furs endlessly until she gave them away.
Charles should at least respect William’s view, then point out that the royal collection is pre-conservation and antique (or something like that). Any version of STFU is inappropriate, especially given the fact that Charles has causes he is passionate and pushy about-conservation, organic farming. In fact, Charles’ reaction as stated by the tabs seems off-William’s outrage at the ivory trade really is an indication that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

  13. Heather says:

Is there something that William isn’t stupid or naive about? Seriously, he’s like a dum-dum Bigfoot. Catherine is obviously cheating on him. So, he pretends to be worried about the ivory!
