Miranda Kerr: ‘I’m not Buddhist, I’m Christian. I’m not religious, I’m spiritual’

Ew, this hairstyle is not the best on Miranda Kerr. She’s trying to do a high-ponytail with some volume at the top, and it just doesn’t work with the shape of her face. These are photos of Miranda at the Swarovski Gala Dinner at the Sydney Opera House yesterday. So… she was in Sydney a few days ago, when James Packer and his friend got into a fistfight in the street over Miranda’s alleged homewrecking ways.

Anyway, Miranda has a newish (it’s a few days old) interview with The Telegraph, and I found it really enjoyable. Her granola shtick grinds away and it’s clear that The Telegraph interview is committed to finding the woman behind the cutesy, wholesome façade. Which leads to some interesting revelations, and Miranda even gets terse about religion. Some highlights:

The religion part: Although she has only positive things to say about Bloom, one of the few times I see a glimmer of real personality during our interview is when I ask her about her religion and spirituality. It’s been previously reported dozens of times that Kerr is a practising Nichiren Buddhist, which she now denies. “No, I’m not Buddhist. Orlando is,” she says, a little sharply. When I ask her if that’s been misreported, she will only say, “I’m not Buddhist. I’m Christian. I pray every day. I meditate every day and I do yoga. I’m not religious, I’m spiritual. And praying is something my grandmother taught me as well. To pray and be grateful, have gratitude, is a big thing for me.”

Putting the first photo of Flynn on her social media: “There was so much pressure at the time on us as a family for that first picture. And you know, the paparazzi were very aggressive and waiting outside our door every single day. And so Orlando and I decided – he took the photo – to post it on my social media. That way, that first photo wouldn’t be worth nearly as much, because I’d already posted it.” She says it takes a lot of effort and time to avoid the paparazzi, but she’s sanguine about them. “It’s all part of the process. And I accept that. You can’t begrudge it because it’s helped me get to where I am today. But there are times when [I wish] I didn’t have to worry about it so much.”

Who she’s closest to: Kerr says that she has a “variety of friends, and I like people from different walks of life”. She mentions one friend from home, and her make-up artist, Rosemary, who looks after her dog, Frankie, when she’s away. She says she speaks to her grandmother and her father. She does not mention her mother, Therese, who made headlines in February when she complained on an Australian reality show that the family barely sees Kerr anymore.

The James Packer rumors: All Kerr will say about her current romantic life is that she’s “single and focused on work”.

She’s not just a model: “I’m not limited by modelling. It’s not the be all and end all. I’m very appreciative of it, but if it stops tomorrow, that’s not the end of the world, because there’s so much more that I’m passionate about as well.”

[From The Telegraph]

She does not take a lot of time and effort avoiding the paparazzi. Bollocks. For a while there, she was doing daily paparazzi-friendly outings, and she still gets pap’d on the reg, especially in NYC. As for her religion, oh, excuse me, her spiritual talk… I understand what she was trying to say, she just said it in a really weird way. I guess she’s saying that she was raised a Christian, she still identifies as Christian, but she does yoga and meditates and tries to find the spiritual side of banging billionaires. Namaste, girl.

    I’m vapid.

  2. Jay says:

Ha! I was at this dinner as a blogger (some of us were invited). She mingled with nobody.

  3. Audrey says:

She looks so much better with her hair down and wavy

I liked her with Orlando. I’m still sad that they’re done and she apparently cheated. They were cute and Flynn is adorable

    • CharlotteS says:

Totally agree about the hair, her face can look strange with it pulled back. She doesn’t really suit heavy make-up either.

  4. Laura says:

    I really dislike this girl.

  5. Penelope says:

Her kid with Orlando Bloom is absolutely adorable and OB seems like a devoted father.

I don’t know enough about her to like or dislike her.

    • Chinoiserie says:

As Christian I am bothered by people like this that are raised Christian but really do not believe anything except general “gratitude” but tell everybody they are Christian. Many times they do not have many Christian values so they just give bad reputation to us.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what she is saying but that is the impression I got. Otherwise she would have sayed she is religious or at least she belives in God. She could just have said that she is spiritual or raised to believe God.

      • Aagje says:

Unconditional love: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”. A Christian value, I do believe. Love your enemy!

      • Kori says:

I took it to mean she believes in Christianity and incorporates prayer into her life but doesn’t identify with a particular branch (ie Anglican, Catholic, Methodist, etc) and/or go to church regularly.

  6. Patricia says:

Um……. If you identify as Christian than you are religious. Because that’s a religion.
    Damn Miranda just stop talking!

    • FingerBinger says:

Not necessarily. Their are people that identify as Christian,Jew or Muslim and aren’t necessarily religious. They may not go to church/synagogue/mosque. For example, a lapsed Catholic is a person that still identifies as catholic, but they may not be a practicing catholic or active in the church.

    • Leen says:

Not necessarily, sometimes it’s an identity thing. I grew up in a Muslim household, personally I’m agnostic in belief but sometimes I say I am Muslim as a result of identity (my culture is Muslim, I celebrate eids, Ramadan, know a lot about Islam, etc). it’s the religion I grew up with, but I don’t necessarily believe in god you see.

  7. fairyvexed says:

Ugh, that third picture. What a fishwife pose.

  8. Mayamae says:

    For a model, she’s surprisingly un-photogenic.

    • Decloo says:

She looks like a kewpie doll or like the cartoon Betty Boop. I never thought she was anything other than adolescent cute.

  9. Immy says:

Round faces look best with hair down. I have a round shaped face (jokingly referred to by my boyfriend as Pie Face) ala Miranda Kerr/Julia Stiles.
I’m fit and 27 but still get the “how old are you?” comments – and I wear the hair down as a general rules unless I’m at the gym.
Pulling it back (in my opinion) accentuates the roundness.

  10. AK84 says:

They weren’t rumors. She was on the record of being a practicing Nicherin Buddhist:

Something happened, that’s for sure. Kind of sad because I have a lot of family (my parents included) and friends in the same practice and it really is a wonderful, open-minded philosophy.

    • CuriousCole says:

That’s why I was confused, because I could have sworn Miranda has been talking about Buddhism for ages and I was always happy to see it mentioned. Now she’s so buttoned up and cagey and “Christian” – what happened? Was she only Buddhist because of Orlando?

Poor Flynn, the little guy should at least have religious constancy now that he’s pinballing across the globe between divorced parents and modelling gigs.

  11. Jaded says:

She has to be one of the most unintelligent people in the universe. If you are a self-identified Christian then yes, you are religious. Religious doesn’t mean you have to be affiliated with any one religion but if you are a Christian then you believe in the holy trinity.

Secondly, to be “spiritual” means “of or pertaining to the spirit or soul, as distinguished from the physical nature: a spiritual approach to life.” It’s not a religion to be spiritual, you just believe in a spiritual afterlife of some sort.

Thirdly, she’s a model, she shows off her body for a living, she has undoubtedly had adulterous relationships. She is somewhat estranged from her family despite claiming she’s close to them. She says “there’s so much more I’m passionate about…”. Um, like what? Posting selfies on IG with your waist photoshopped to 18 inches? Canoodling with billionaires? I wouldn’t say she’s living an exemplary Christian lifestyle, or even a spiritual one. Doing yoga doesn’t qualify you for membership into the “spiritual club”.

  12. Yelp says:

There are dozens of of times she herself as said she practices Buddhism. not just a few; this was literally her shtick in 2007/2008 when she was still a no name victoria secret new comer riding the coat tails of then still relevant Orlando.

Me thinks she said whatever she needed to say to get him.

  13. Vera says:

Things that make me go ugh.

  14. Snowpea says:

Oh man I am not even sure why but this chick makes me cranky.
