Lily Allen denies encouraging experimental drug use

Lily Allen
On Sunday, Lily Allen was quoted as saying that parents should encourage their kids to do drugs to see if it’s right for them. She also claims she would be a drug addict if she weren’t famous. The quote came from a gig she did in the Bahamas, which she later Twittered as “Worst gig ever, butlins bahamas not featuring .in other news I won on the roulette” [sic]. On that same Twitter account, she’s denying the quote. Here’s how News of the World reported the story:

She said potentially lethal Class A drugs like ecstasy MIGHT not harm them — so the best way to find out was to take them.

Lily said: “Parents should say, ‘Drugs might seem fun, but they do funny things to your brain. Some people react to it good, some don’t. Try it and see what you think’.”

The star—who slurped wine during a shambolic gig this weekend—said only fame stops her bingeing on ecstasy pills.

Lily, 23, admits: “If I hadn’t been famous I’d have taken loads. Wouldn’t be too wise right now.”

She adds: “I’ve never been good with cocaine or drugs like that. They make me passionately angry on everything. I steer clear of heroin or crack.”

[from News of the World]

Well now Lily is denying the story, saying that she was originally quoted by the Dutch magazine Revu, and News of the World mistranslated her statement. Again on her Twitter account, she declared: “Phoning my lawyers and taking legal action, news of the world need a better dutch translator, as if I would say that. And they know it…” No, they don’t know that. Lily has been quoted talking about drug use numerous times, recently claiming that cocaine really isn’t that bad.

While I understand where she’s coming from on both counts, she needs to just shut up about drug use. She doesn’t talk about what she “actually” said at the gig, but really, any reference to drugs from her mouth is not good PR. She’s not getting herself anywhere byGoogling herself to see how she got home, admitting that she needs to drink to do shows, and then becoming indignant when people believe that she encourages drug use. Her latest album is good – really good – but no one’s talking about it. Instead, all the focus is on her drinking. I hope this isn’t another case of Amy Winehouse syndrome.

Thanks to NME for the Twitter story

Ah, Lily. Just shut your pretty face and stick to making music.

  2. I agree Lily Allen just needs to keep her trap shut.

I like hearing what she has to say. I find her funny and smart. I’m a productive, tax paying, responsible casual drug user who abhors anti-drug hysteria.

Why would Lily need to “experiment” with drugs? Her dad (along with that other mad scientist Damien Hirst) has been courageously snorting every bit of white powder and horsing down every type of alcohol he could lay his paws on for decades and is still no closer to publishing his findings on the matter… Unless you count the song “Vindaloo”? *wink*

Oh dude! What an excellent article dude! Have to thank you for this one, though I’ve got a dilemma with your RSS feed. Can’t appear to subscribe to it for some reason. Do you know if anyone else is having the exact same problem? If you’ve got a solution please let me know.
