Chelsea Handler quit her E! show after tiring of the ‘drama’ of ‘the celebrity world’

Justin Bieber

Chelsea Handler has been hosting her show on E! for seven years, but she recently announced that Chelsea Lately is over when her contract expires in August. She made sure to drop several hints about being a contender to replace Craig Ferguson. That won’t happen. Chelsea will possibly head to Netflix, which could end up being an upgrade or downgrade. The Netflix model is still pretty young, and I don’t know how well a streaming audience would embrace Chelsea’s abrasive “humor.”

The reason for Chelsea’s departure has been up in the air. I don’t know if people have really wondered why she’s leaving E!, but she’s talking. Chelsea says that she quit her current show because she’s completely tired of interviewing celebrities. She actually calls out Swaggy in this interview with the Mail. Ha:

She’s tired of interviewing celebrities: “To be quite honest I don’t really care about Justin Bieber and I don’t want to talk about him anymore. In order to make that happen I had to just stop doing my show. Straight away.”

Her future plans: “I’ve had seven years of being on the show but I was just kinda over it and tired and I have a really proper new exciting project which will be announced in the next two weeks which I’m super happy about. I’m excited more than anything about that. I’m not doing CBS Late Late. Anything being rumoured is not what I’m doing. I’m going to do a show. It will be a refresh situation, a little bit more mindful and a little bit more interesting for me and my viewers.”

On working for the E! Network: “I think if you participate in the celebrity world then you don’t really have a choice but to be involved in the drama. You end up getting so into the mix that it changes the topics of the day. You can sit around and complain about all that sh-t and the Kardashians all day but if you’re participating in it then what can you do? It really didn’t feel great doing the show and the only way to sort things out was to extricate myself from the entire situation.”

Delusions of grandeur: “Now I want to do things differently. I want to talk to people who are going to educate me. Politicians, medical professionals and people with real human interest stories. I want to talk to people who have changed the course of the world. Inventors, invaders and people who have been doing exciting stuff.”

[From Daily Mail]

Chelsea wasn’t happy about hosting a show on the same channel where the Kardashians rule the roost. How many E! shows have featured the Klan? I have no idea. Too many. She’s also tired of interviewing little brats like Justin Bieber, which is understandable. This could actually be the best thing that Swaggy has ever done — drive Chelsea Handler away from E! Oh well. Chelsea is more like Swaggy than she believes. They’re both so fond of racist jokes. Betcha Chelsea hasn’t even realized that similarity, but she’d strike up the “comedian” defense.

I’m guessing that Chelsea’s claim of being “over celebrities” doesn’t mean that she’ll stop hanging out with her celebrity friends.

    G O R G E O U S! Truly an inspirational woman!

  2. Kiddo says:

She sounds like she thinks she might be the female second-coming of Colbert or Stewart. Who knows?

    • Rice says:

That’s exactly what I was going to write! I’m going to up the ante and say AS IF!

    • BangersandMash says:

“stewart? Give me his file….. *putting on glasses and reading*
      AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, *choking* AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!” – God
after being told who Handler thinks is her equal.

But in all seriousness though. Good on her for being ambitious, but I will have to agree with God on this one. For several real reasons.
      1. Jon Stewart does not make racist jokes, or crude, distasteful jokes.
      2. Her celebrity arch nemesis (The Leg Jolie) has casual lunches with the same people she would kill to interview. (conflict of interest)
      3. People of note take Jon Stewart seriously… that is not part of her ‘vodka’ profile.
But if she works on revamping her image, things will change.

  3. Chris says:

    That’s a great dress.

    • FLORC says:

      Chris
I’m not sure why, but your comment’s “say something nice” Quality reminded me of Tim Gunn on Wait, Wait Don’t tell me this weekend.
He gave a great story on “meeting” Vivian Vance (Ethyl from I love Lucy). It’s a short story told over a slightly longer span of time, but worth it if you can listen to it.
It all sparked from a show Lucy did called “Lucy Tells The Truth”. I’m such a rambler here, but it’s funny and worth a listen.

      http://www.npr.org/programs/wait-wait-dont-tell-me/
And who doesn’t love Tim Gunn. He’s amazing.

  4. Hello says:

Well I am not a fan of hers but she went up in my estimation for hating the Kardashian clan and JB. I wish chat shows would stop allowing the Kardashian on their show and promoting them and maybe everyone else will follow in forever turning our backs to them and giving them the no attention they deserve.

    • It’s not like SHE’S any better than the K Klan. And I’m not even talking about the ‘Angelina-is-a-demon-c-u-next-tuesday’…….I just watched that stupid movie, ‘Bling Ring’ with my sister a few months ago–about those teenagers that were stealing from celebrities. There were two girls who were friends, but considered themselves sisters (I think, the movie was really boring)–they lived together.

Well, THEY had a freaking REALITY SHOW, while they were on trial for stealing the stuff from celebs. All I remember is that they were popping Xanax and screaming at Mary Jo Sales for the article she wrote in Vanity Fair.

      Guess who produced it?

      Chelsea Handler.

      • lucy says:

        Corrections:
The Bling Ring sounds like a stupid movie for sure. But it was produced by Sofia Coppola, Roman Coppola, Youree Henley, and others,…not Chelsea Handler.

        Francis Ford Coppola executive produced.

        Emma Watson starred.

        Directed by Sofia Coppola.

The author of the Vanity Fair piece is Nancy Jo Sales, not Mary Jo Sales.

      • Regarded says:

Lucy, I think VC meant that the reality show was produced by Chelsea Handler.

      • @lucy
I was talking about the reality show, not the movie. I know Sofia Coppola directed it (it was SO boring).

But Handler had money to produce ANYTHING she wanted….and that’s what she chose. Yeah. Methinks this ‘I’m so bored with celebrities’ schtick is just that….a schtick. She wouldn’t have to resort to starting rumors on twitter and talking about her amazing new career move…if she had one.

      • FLORC says:

She produced that terrible show?! Wasn’t the big scandal that the show’s producers and execs had to know they were on heavy drugs.
Black tar herion if memory serves. The even very scandalous for it’s time under age nudity was always on The Soup. Not to be made fun of as much as “I can’t believe this is on TV”.

  5. Jaderu says:

Thank you Justin. I can’t believe I just said that.
Maybe the celebrities don’t want to be interviewed by her anymore?

  6. Helvetica says:

I can’t stand her and I don’t find her funny.

    • FLORC says:

I only know 1 person that does find her funny. This girl is mean and fake to her core. Buys her books, saw her stand up, wore a team Aniston T-shirt.

    • Camille (The Original) says:

      +100000000000000.

  7. Miss M says:

She is tired of the celebrity world. Is she tired of her celebrity friends who live in that world?

    • OhDear says:

And does this mean she’ll disappear and not be a celebrity anymore?

    • feebee says:

No, I don’t think so. I fully believe her that she’s sick of the pandering interview style that is celebrity interviews. She isn’t really that sort of person to want to put up with the Justin Biebers and Kardashian messes.

But I think part of the appeal of doing the show was getting her more integrated into the celebrity world, giving her celebrity friends a slightly less mainstream interview and a higher profile/audience for herself.

She’s achieved all that. She’s now able to keep the cream and dump the crap. Netflix while still new is validated enough to be a good option. I imagine her core fans will follow her, I probably won’t go to the trouble.

Oh and Miss M, I miss you not being around so much either. I love the Celebitchy writers but some of the commentators here are A+ for reading enjoyment too!

      • Miss M says:

Feebee, you are completely right on your assessment on Chelsea. She got what she wanted and now it is time to move on. The first year of her show was great, but once she became friends with other celebrities, argh…

Oh, and I miss being around too. I have had too many deadlines on my PhD since mid April. But I try to lurk in even if I cannot comment because the commentators are awesome! Please, keep up the fun here! πŸ™‚

  8. QQ says:

Hahahah she is in Full Bitter Betty Mode cause no one likes her anymore and comedians Lambast her and her celebrity friends act like they are shame f***ink her and don’t wanna be Seen with her like in public Bwhahahah she is The Booty Call of Famous People Friendships

  9. Soulange says:

did someone finally paid her enough to leave? Are did she upset someone so much, they gave her trhe honour of quiting?
    Girl knows to much.

  10. Regarded says:

Unless she made some serious changes to her image, what politician would even come on her show?
She’s so vapid so I don’t see how her new show concept is going to work. But she’s really silly to think she’s above it all – if she didn’t care for the drama, why would she become so involved in the issues between Aniston/Jolie?
    This woman is a troll.

    • BangersandMash says:

      agreed.

She can be the next ‘Jon Stewart’, as I’m perceiving her intentions to mean. But Jon and Chelsea don’t even play in the same ‘court’ to compete.

Jon is taken seriously and beloved for a number of reasons that Chelsea has never thought of trying to aim for. The racist jokes, the ‘vodka’ laced lifestyle, the make-offensive-comments-to-Chewy shtick. Pictures of you (heterosexual woman) putting your g-string arse on a lesbian woman’s face, insulting Angelina Jolie (who happens to work with ‘people who have changed the course of the world’)

Serious changes need to be made to show she is capable of pulling off a Jon Stewart career.
I mean if celebrities like George Clooney and the rest haven’t put their bums on her seat. What hopes are there for serious political figures?

  11. Hannah says:

Sorry Chels, you’re not smart enough to interview the people you’re supposedly interested in. Anyone who thinks she is needs to watch her appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher.

  12. epiphany says:

On June 2, she and Aniston went for a facial in Beverly Hills accompanied by bodyguards. So, she hates talking about the celebrity world, but doesn’t mind living in it.

  13. ann says:

I like her; people should be getting over the “women need to be nice” meme. She gave a lot of female comedians work on her show; I always enjoyed her interviews and she’s no dummy.

    • Jojoann says:

I’ve never seen her show but from what I get here she has the Roseann Barr problem, she isnt cutesy enough? Is that right? Because thats a silly critique. The same world that makes room for Fey and Peohler should make room for a more abrasive style. You just dont have to watch it, izall.

My biggest issue with her would be the racist comments attributed to her. I have a problem with comedians excusing their bigotry for humor. But then again this is a very common problem among far more successful comedians from Seth McFarlane to Howard Stern and I dont see anyone making too big a fuss. In fact I have seen Howard defended here many times. I guess what I am saying is, I wont seek her show out but also cant get 100% behind the venom until its evenly applied. Equal opportunity douche-baggery is what this is.

      • BangersandMash says:

I hear you, I hear you!!

My argument,is that what she finds funny, many people of colour (not just africans) find rude, not just abrasive, but offensive. For example, she made some rude, snide remarks about Lupita Nyongo being adopted by Angelina Jolie…. Now look at how this can potentially shoot her on her own foot.

Lupita, is the daughter of Peter Nyongo, a Kenyan politician and former professor. That would be someone Chelsea would like to have as a guest in her show. And how would any other African politicians would look at this and say, “Yes!!”.
Take her often racists remarks towards Asians and Latinos in her show. How can Xi Jinping or Dilma Rousseff want to sit down with her after receiving just a BRIEF synopsis of the type of stuff she finds funny????

The lady needs to change her image. She needs to stop manopolizing on offensive stereotypes of other people and then turning around saying, “But I’m personally nothing like that, so why aren’t you guys laughing?”

      • Ronnie says:

        Nice jojoanne

      • TG says:

Yes, I feel Chelsea’s racism is really bad. I don’t mind off-color jokes but she crosses the line. She did an interview talking about her breakup with Fifty Cent and she kept going on and on about him being black and how big he is and how surprised all her friends were and everyone said he was just this big black teddy bear, and on an on about him being black. I mean if he was white would they have called him a white teddy bear? Would she and her friends have been so concerned with his whiteness? It just seemed that she and her friends were so focused on his blackness, which to me, indicates she is too aware of his race for her to not be a racist. I always thought if you are in a relationship with someone you don’t think about their race all the time.

And people keep mentioning Jon Stewart but what about Stephen Colbert, Jon Oliver and Bill Maher? They are all awesome.

    • Sighs says:

I’ve seen her show a couple of times and read about a third of of one of her books. That’s all I could get through. I have no problem whatsoever with crude or mean humour. She just isn’t funny. She comes across as a self-absorbed, drunken *itch. And not a funny one, either.

    • lucy2 says:

I have no problem with the “not nice” brand of comedy. I just don’t find her funny anymore, and I once watched her show because she often had good comedians on the panel. I also thought her first book was OK. But once she got more popular, I think she got more obnoxious, and I didn’t find her enjoyable at all.

    • I don’t think she’s funny AT ALL. And she looks and sounds like she is completely disinterested when she is interviewing a celebrity. It doesn’t matter WHO it is. I can’t call out other comedians because I don’t have tv and don’t watch comedy shows. The only reason why I even watched Handler’s show a few times was because I was at my grandma’s house (who lives four hours away from me), and she’s a night owl, so she watches it sometimes.

    • Grant says:

I’ve read one of her books and watched her show and I think she’s actually pretty funny. Not only that, but she’s competent and reasonably articulate in interviews with people like Katie Couric, Larry King, and that skeeze Piers Morgan.

    • Sassy says:

Totally agree – she is a comedienne, like Joan Rivers (who I adore). This is their schtick. They are calculatingly funny, with writers working for them. They are “playing a part” and a lucrative part, may I add. I think Chelsea is very sharp and there are so few out there, so I wish her success in her newest venture. She also has a very east coast vibe, which may not sit well with middle america.

  14. Talie says:

She’s just a damn user — she got her group of celeb friends high up the food chain who put it in her head that she was bigger than what she was. I saw her on WWHL once and she was a nasty piece of work to Andy and Rick Shroeder — I guess because she looked down on them.

  15. Artemis says:

I think if you participate in the celebrity world then you don’t really have a choice but to be involved in the drama.

Said Chelsea Handler, professional celeb hanger-on.

Said the woman who never met Angelina Jolie but went on an attacked her and her family multiple times without any provocation or excuse.

Girl STAPHHHH! Stop being so messy. She totally belongs in the celeb world, she’s just Witherspooning now: marginally talented woman who fronts like she’s a normal gal with intelligence and wit but is really a huge (gossip) bitch and thinks she’s better than everybody else.

  16. eliza says:

I know the popular thing is to hate on this woman but I can totally understand her point. It has to be tiring interviewing douche bags all the time and in the celebrity world, there are many.

There is a difference between having celebrity friends you choose vs celebrities you are forced to be around.

    • Anna says:

Yeah, I don’t really like her, but I can’t fault her for any of the reasons she gave. I’m sure there ARE a lot more interesting, complex people out there than Justin Bieber or whoever else she’s been interviewing. That doesn’t mean it’s going to pan out for her, but I get why she’d want to leave.

      • WTF says:

But doesn’t that imply that she is interesting or complex? Maybe she is. Maybe she’s just been pretending to be a racist, ignorant, vapid excuse for a woman all these years to keep her job on E!
        I guess anything is possible.

  17. lisa2 says:

Interesting how she talks about the Celebrity culture when she herself is the one that worked to get close to those celebrities. Which is how her show changed. She use to talk about tabloids as if they were gospel. She use to rag on all celebs. then she got close and friendly with the people she made fun of. So she couldn’t talk about the tabloid and gossip stories as true anymore because her “friends” are the topic of those stories.. Meaning how can tabloid stories be true about some celebs but never about your “friends”

She friended herself out of her show. She kissed ass of certain celebs to get in their circle. Now she has become soft and less edgy. If you are going to do a show like hers you need distance. Same thing has happened to Howard Stern and even Perez Hilton and others. When you get close to the people you rag on then you lose something.

She is making a point that she is the one that called quits. Her ratings have been dropping steadily. And even having her celebrity friends on the show doesn’t help because she wont ask the tough questions.

Glad she is gone and I for one don’t plan on seeing her Empowered Women’s show.

    • kpoodle says:

      +1

    • Kellie says:

I was just thinking “ie Perez Hilton”.
He lost it when he got chummy with the celebs.
Now look at him – I dont know a sinlge person who reads his blog.
      Not one.

  18. minime says:

Ahahahaha she wants to interview inspiring people!?! I can’t wait to see all the “inspiring” people she will bring to her new show.

    • lisa2 says:

Sounds like she is throwing out feelers for Angelina..

*** I want to talk to people who have changed the course of the world. Inventors, invaders and people who have been doing exciting stuff.”

      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I guess her celebrity friends don’t equal that description.. SHADE

  19. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

And Chelsea, if she wanted to avoid being papped, could don a beard and be mistaken for Hugh Jackman, except for the kids likely wouldn’t be fooled and would run for the hills.

  20. Ag says:

hopefully no one who is serious and an actual “world changer” would come on this awful woman’s show.

  21. don't kill me i'm french says:

Jessica Chastain ‘s crying! Chelsea’s show was her fav!

  22. Green Is Good says:

In all seriousness, it was ridiculous foe her to interview Baby Beaver. He has a toddler fan- base who sure as hell don’t watch Chelsea Handles. Way past their bedtime.

  23. Sullivan says:

Haha! That’s the funniest thing she’s ever said. Comedy gold!

  24. word says:

Well she’s a celeb so is she “over herself”? I was hoping once her contract with E is over, she’d go on a full on Kardashian rant. We’ll see. Also, come on Chelsea…are you really going to complain about a cushy job you got paid millions to do? You had people writing the jokes for you and a panel of comedians to take on most of the work the one hour 4 days a week you filmed. THAT was tiring ??? Try a real 9 – 5 for only 10% of what you earn and tell me what’s tiring.

  25. lucy2 says:

Didn’t Netflix already deny they were working on something with her? Just like CBS had to do, twice, because of “rumors” (aka from camp Chelsea)?
She has based her entire career on drinking and celebrity gossip – which is fine, there’s obviously a market for it. But I find it annoying that she suddenly feels above that all and wants a more serious show, when she has yet to do anything that shows she’s capable of it. Get Stewart or Colbert talking on a different platform, and you can see they are intelligent and aware people. I haven’t seen Chelsea do anything of the sort. No thanks.

And LOL at her decrying celebrity, when she so clearly wanted it and tries to get in with whoever she can.

    • Candy Love says:

Yes Netflix denied that they working on something with her.

She pulled this same thing about 3 or 4 years ago when she was going to leave the show and she has yet she ran back to E! and to take any steps Into becoming a serious interviewer .

  26. The Original Mia says:

Don’t go away mad. Just go far, far away, vodka-soaked troll.

  27. Bliss says:

She is obsessed with Angelina Jolie.

She can’t use her anymore now that Jolie had her masectolmy. It was her shtick to use and abuse Jolie’s insults in the most despicable way she could find…

The tide has just changed and now that idiot Handler wants to buy hesrelf a new respectability and wants to interview the likes of Jolie…

    Dream on idiot !

She is just an opportunistic and a hypocrit.

    • She already did use her–at this year’s Oscars. When she made that ‘joke’ about Angelina adopting Sidney Poitier and Lupita Nyong’o. Those tweets tell you a lot–she isn’t funny.

Which is why I’m perplexed as to why she’s saying that she’s bored with celebrity crap–yet a few months ago (well, more than a few, but you get my drift), she had to mention someone (Angelina) who wasn’t even in ‘the spotlight’ i.e. wasn’t nominated, she was The Date.

FYI, Jennifer is still friends with her–I thought after Angelina’s double mastectomy, Jennifer would dump Chelsea–but, NO. Still friends. So I still continue to believe that whatever Chelsea says about AJ, Jennifer endorses it. You don’t control your friends, but you do control who you are friends with. So we’ll probably see Jennifer on Chelsea’s show (she has a few movies come out this year–at least one).

  28. reba says:

“Inventors and invaders” ??? WTH, what invaders?

  29. Jayna says:

When I would catch her show sometimes I usually enjoyed it. I liked her roundtable of comics, and I always enjoyed her interviewing style, more edgy and casual, and usually got some good stuff from the celeb. I enjoyed her banter with them.

    As a comic, awful.

  30. The Original G says:

I’m not a fan, but I do want to say that Aniston should taken lessons from her on how to rock that bob.

  31. Melibea4ever says:

She is tired of celebrities and we are tired of her…ahh the circle of life!!!

  32. Lilacflowers says:

If she is so tired of celebrities and Justin Bieber in particular, why, on the only episode of her show that I ever watched, did she constantly bring up the topic of Bieber when she was interviewing Tom Hiddleston? That was when she wasn’t staring at Hiddleston’s butt, smelling Hiddleston’s butt, talking about Hiddleston’s butt, comparing Hiddleston’s trip to China with Bieber’s trip to China, suggesting that Hiddleston play the role of Bieber in a brothel while she played a prostitute, and offering her breasts to Hiddleston, who politely declined them?

  33. Dommy Dearest says:

Oh please, this woman is lying. She made a career out of lying, interviewing celebrities and being more trashy than a Kardashian as far as things she’s said. She’s leaving E! because they told her to calm down with the Jolie bashing.

  34. silly you says:

i can’t wait to see the line-up of politicians and medical professionals (huh?) who want to be interviewed by this skank.

  35. floridaseaturtle says:

Nice coat. Did anyone else notice how much she looks like Meg Ryan in that shot? The “after” version, like “before & after plastic surgery”…botox, fillers. Which looks good on her actually, since you really can’t make Meg Ryan look bad, even with too many fillers.

  36. jgb979 says:

I quit my job because I was deluded to think I had a serious shot at taking over the Late show (hence why I posted CBS documents on my Twitter feed). When that didn’t happen, I had to invent another reason.

I would work for the SOAP network if it meant I got to keep being a celebrity.

  37. Izzy says:

Well yes, she’s SO tired of celebrity drama, that she’s feeding the frenzy about Sandy “America’s Sweetheart” Bullock and Captain America. I don’t believe for one second that she’s not one of the sources behind at least one of those “anonymous” comments about how they’re interested and getting to know each other.

And yes, she’s SO sick of celebrities, which is why she keeps BFF’ing them. Or, should I say, SWFing them.

  38. Angel says:

Wait, she’s the same person who went on stage and kept slandering Angelina Jolie for being a husband-stealer? I bet she has some interesting questions for people with actual brains, then. I don’t see her interviewing credible politicians and personalities, but you never know, I guess.
