Hugh Jackman is no longer the hairy, dapper man who so expertly hosted the Tony Awards. He just shaved his head bald for his role as the pirate Blackbeard in Pan, a retelling of Peter Pan. Hugh tweeted the photo above along with the caption “Blackbeard is born. #PAN” At least this is just a hair change and he didn’t have to starve himself skinny.

Pan is directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Anna Karenina) and also stars Amanda Seyfried as Mary, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lilly and Garrett Hedlund as Hook. Peter Pan and Wendy are played by young actors I haven’t heard of yet, and there’s no IMDB listing for Tinkerbell. (I don’t mind if they don’t include Tinkerbell, I always found her lacking. Maybe they’ll just CGI her, she doesn’t speak, right?)

As far as Jackman’s new look, he’s still incredibly hot and he’s doing a little something extra for me since I adore bald men. Still, I’m slightly disappointed. I was hoping Hugh would look more badass bald. He’s slightly “cute” as a pirate, but I’m sure his acting will make him menacing enough. Maybe it’s the bizarre angle of the photo, I need to see his new look from other angles and I’m imagining a few now. Yes, it does look better from other angles.

I was disappointed in the lack of comments on the Tonys post, but I guess that’s to be expected. It’s not like many of us are attending Broadway, but for the few who watch, they put on an incredible show. Jackman in particular was excellent as the Tonys host, as was his predecessor Neil Patrick Harris. I wouldn’t expect anything less from him. Is that the problem with Hugh, that we always expect greatness from him and he always delivers? Or is he just too nice, too sweet and we’re all waiting for the facade to drop on his incredible ability and professionalism? I hope it never does. I find him so genuine and such a natural showman.
