Rita Ora covers Flare to discuss her ‘American takeover’: premature?

Rita Ora

Rita Ora covers the July issue of Flare magazine. She’s promoting lots of stuff like her Rimmel makeup line and a small role (as Christian Grey’s sister, Mia) in 50 Shades of Grey. Oh and she’s promoting her “world domination” as a pop star. Yep. I’m not sure if those words are exclusively from Rita’s camp or if Flare is giving her a nudge too.

Every time I write about Rita, people say they don’t know who she is. But you’ve probably heard her music and just haven’t realized it was her. Some of her tunes play at the gym, and I didn’t know they were her until I YouTubed her music. It’s okay. Club stuff, kinda reminiscent of old-school Taylor Dayne but not as catchy. I don’t mind Rita except for those weird Justin Bieber hookup stories. She also follows the tired Lady Gaga street style manual of walking around in wacky outfits to get papped. It’s hard to remember that Rita is a singer with decent music when she’s pulling these stunts. This interview is off putting too:

Her beauty ailment: “Panda eyes. I’m the queen of bags; I’ve had them since I was young. There’s things to do, though.”

On makeup: “It’s so good for us! It’s called GLAMAH.”

On fashion: “I feel like I’m a character already, as in, like, I love dressing up. If I could live in a cabaret, I would. If I could live in Moulin Rouge, I would.”

She’s modelling herself after Bey: “Beyonce built her f—king foundation from the bottom. I think that’s the exact career every female artist wants to have.”

On comparisons between women: “There’s always competition. I definitely feel it. I thrive off of it. I love it. I don’t look at it as a competition, I look at it as a form of energy.”

Is she a “Boss Ass Bitch”?: “Uh, I don’t know. What does a boss feel like? I can’t say it, I can’t. Because a boss-ass bitch doesn’t say they’re a boss. Everyone knows.”

She’s addicted to social media: “I scroll with one eye open. It’s like a drug. For me, it’s like, look forward. You don’t have to look side to side. If you start looking from side to side, you get confused. That’s a good quote. I might have to tweet that.”

On happening in the US: Ora is on the tail end of what she calls her “American Takeover,” which she describes as an “all-right-let’s-give-it-a-shot kind of thing.” Her nonchalance belies a gruelling itinerary: belting out the new single on The Tonight Show, hanging with Iggy Azalea for an afternoon on MTV and performing an intimate show for friends and family at uber-hip Manhattan nightspot The Box, as well as tackling a head-spinning number of press events. Ora’s overseas debut, it’s clear, is of vital, make-or-break importance. While she waits for a round of nail art to dry, she starts goofing around, pulling cross-eyed selfie faces for her devoted Instagram followers. “YE-AH! We are heeeeere. We are coming. We. Have. Arrived.”

[From Flare]

Rita is hot in London, or at least, that’s the impression I’ve gleaned from various UK-based news sources. Is Rita Ora really going to happen in the United States? Maybe. She’s recording a duet with Prince for his new album, which could be a sign of the times (sorry, couldn’t resist). I do think it’s presumptuous to walk around talking about an “American takeover” before it actually happens.

Can we talk about Rita’s hair for a moment? She bleaches it platinum, but I’d love to see her go back to her natural color. The bright blonde is so harsh on her. I think she bleaches her hair to stand out and be noticed, but she accomplishes that on their own.

  1. It is what it is says:

Does anyone here listen to Marina and the Diamonds? Now that is a lady I wish got more celebrity coverage!

  2. Erinn says:

I don’t think I’ve actually heard one of her songs before…I honestly only heard of her because of Rob Kardashian, and I don’t even follow the Kardashian’s other than on here.

    • Ag says:

      same here.

    • word says:

She had a song on U.S. radio last year or maybe even 2 years ago that got some air time. She has had 3 or 4 number one hits in the U.K. She is huge over there. The problem with Rita is she was introduced to the U.S. as Rob’s girlfriend (although she tried to keep the relationship private). Rob trashed her on twitter and I’m sure this did not help her image at all. Stay away from Kardashians at all costs !

  3. stellalovejoydiver says:

Her tryhardness is exhausting. She wants it bad.

  4. Abbott says:

The only things I know about Rita are that she *allegedly* cheated a lot on Calvin Harris and is the Bargain Bin Rihanna. Cannot name a song of hers, but bless her heart, she does want this real bad, huh?

    • jinni says:

She also allegedly (well according to his twitter rant) cheated on Rob Kardashian.

    • Macey says:

I was going to post the same thing. I dont think I’ve ever heard any of her music but then I dont really follow pop music, just the stuff in the blogs. In fact if it wasnt for my thing with celeb blog sites like this one I would never have even heard her name.

      • TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

Also, there are still plenty of people that listen to country – probably the biggest genre right now – and plenty of rock fans, including classic rock, even among teens and twenty somethings – she’s not that great – does she write and arrange her own songs or is that done by professionals? Just asking.

  5. Tanguerita says:

    dream on, girl.

  6. paola says:

She always looks as if she is in need of a shower.. and she has one of the worst dress styles I’ve ever seen on a woman. She has a nice voice but I don’t think she is Beyonce’ material… in UK she’s branded as Chav most of the times and I couldn’t agree more.

    • SpookySpooks says:

Isn’t “chav” an offensive wordfor working class peopleAnd if I’m not mistaken, her parents are doctors or something.

I like her. She seems a bit out there, but she has talent, she can actually sing, unlike Rihanna who is very popular for some strange reason.
Will she make it in America? I don’t know. Robbie Williams never made it, and he’s one of the, if not the biggest pop star in the world.

      • AG-UK says:

yes Chav is what you describe, but I think it can apply to anyone really. They consider those from parts of Essex (like The only way is Essex reality show ) as Chavs and they don’t necessarily need to be working class. She has the one song RIP but I don’t think she will make it in the US, I know they all try but the US is huge and we have enough mediocre talent without taking others mediocre talent. She is def. a try hard good luck to her, plus she tries to be sort of 1990’s hip hop wanna be girl ala Salt/Pepper I think.

      • Julie says:

I like her too. Her voice is beautiful. I don’t understand why people don’t like that she openly desires success, that’s her job. At least she’s not one of those “I do it for the aaaaaahrt”. She has fun with it.

    • Renee says:

She does always look rather unclean…so does Christina Aguilera. It’s a talent that some people have, I guess.

      • Jill says:

I guess if you can sing, you don’t need showers! Jk, I don’t think she looks unclean. I think that’s a weird thing that people who don’t like her say.

  7. evadstructn says:

She broke Rob Kardashian – His weight gain and pill bloat started after she dumped him. Her PR team has managed to diminish her prior association with the Karkrashian Klan really well.

    • Abbott says:

Rob Kardashian broke Rob Kardashian. Rita didn’t shove pills or food down his throat.

      • evadstructn says:

ITA. Though, I do think that her dumping him was a catalyst for his spiral. His twitter rant about her was so immature and angry. She’s smart to distance herself from him/ them, in trying to gain some semblance of cred in the US.

      • SpookySpooks says:

        Lucifer’s Homegirl broke Rob Kardashian.

    • Red says:

It actually validates her decision to leave him if he is really that unstable as to fall apart over such a brief relationship in such an extreme way. There must be something seriously wrong with him

  8. Adrien says:

She actually has a nice voice and she,s also pretty. But as long as Rihanna exists there is no place for her in America. She’ll reach Jessie J status though.

    • SpookySpooks says:

Why not? She is better than Rihanna. Heck, anyone is better than Rihanna.

    • Julie says:

Why? Because people would rather eat up junk like Rihanna rather than someone with real talent?

  9. Kiddo says:

    What is a Flare?

    • Ally8 says:

The magazine had to write a whole silly column about how it means “flair” but they prefer the “flare” spelling visually, and that word relates to fashion, too, so they went with that.

Really, if Rita Ora wasn’t such enthusiastic street fashion pap bait, or hadn’t dated the odd American C-lister, no one would have ever heard of her.

Also, LOL at a UK celeb talking about an American takeover in a Canadian magazine.

  10. Cora says:

She’s beautiful in a very unusual way.

  11. Emily says:

Can somebody please tell me the cure for “panda eyes”? I’ve tried everything!

    • Julie says:

I heard green tea bags help. Or any kind of tea. You have to refrigerate them after boiling & then put it on your eyes.

    • jammypants says:

I read ground coffee beans can help. It helps stimulate circulation. The teabag suggestion might do the same since there’s caffeine in tea as well.

    • Classypuss says:

Green tea and coffee beans are good, but potato juice is the only thing that works for me and I’ve always had panda eyes :/ Thinly slice a potato – one for each eye- and let sit for 5-10 mins. Do it as many times a week as you want, but 3 is ok. It’s gentle and smells earthy ahhh!

  12. Farah says:

I’ve disliked her since she had that interview, where she said she uses people thinking she’s black as a way to get ahead. I just have no words…

    • Her says:

What would your words be if you had them?

      • Farah says:

Stupid, stupid girl. It’s one thing for all these white people like Miley, Justin (B or T) and Macklemore to go around appropriating black culture. She’s straight up just pretending to be black.

      • Scottie says:

I heard that interview. The interviewer (who was black, btw) said he thought she was black or biracial when he first saw her. She corrected him and said she’s white, and also said she was flattered and said that a lot of people think she’s black and she thinks of it as a good thing. She was saying it as a compliment. How would you have preferred her to answer? “No I’m white, I love being white, stop calling me black”? She’s just embracing her look. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

  13. DrFunkenstein says:

LOL Premature? Just a little. I’m willing to bet the “takeover” never happens.

    • Taylor says:

I don’t really understand why so many people jumped on the bandwagon of not wanting her to “happen”. She’s talented and as far as I know is a nice girl who actually respects her fans and doesn’t diss them on the Internet.

      • DrFunkenstein says:

I’m not personally opposed to her “happening,” I just think we live in an age of media proclamations of what’s “happening” at any given time. If she makes it because she’s talented, great. But she wouldn’t be the first talented person to fail to achieve superstardom while others much less deserving prance about with the title.

  14. Nance says:

I’m from QC/Canada, still don’t know who she is.

  15. Mela says:

I only know her as “Rita Whora” thanks to Rob Kardashian and that she dated Calvin Harris. If you asked me to name one of her songs, I’d have no clue. I wouldn’t exactly be proud to be in the hot mess of Fifty Shades of Grey, especially as a side character too.

  16. Magoo says:

She was papped before she was famous, which is weird. I think she pretended to be successful by dressing the part and calling the paps all the time. There are far more popular recording artists who get papped less. So she’s a conundrum. She seems famous, but no one knows what she does. I wish the paps and gossip sites were more judicious in who they covered. The bar is really low now. People must think we’re dumb, like if we see her image, we’ll automatically buy her music. Ummm… no. I guess she’s trying to sell her music more in N. America now. Good luck to her.

    • Lisa says:

I know. She should have paid for her songs to be played on the radio. That’s why I but music. If they played her music over and over on the radio like they do everyone else, people would actually buy it. She does have a lot of endorsement deals though so maybe being papped all the time was a wise investment. Who knows?

  17. Ice Queen says:

Rita is so boring to me. Why do I need Rita, when I have Rihanna? Not that I listen to Rihanna nor am I a huge fan, it’s just that to me Rita is like a cheap version of Rihanna.

  18. GeeMoney says:

I still don’t really know who she is.

  19. Sorella says:

Couldn’t name a song of hers if I was forced to under oath. Seems many saying the same, despite her PR blitz happening. I can’t see her becoming an “IT” and happening if she hasn’t by now with this much work put into it. I mean Lorde broke out in her song/voice before we knew her, she has had major success in the US. Whereas Rita is the face we kinda-do-kinda’don’t know yet we can’t name a hit song despite that. Yet remember she dated a Kardashian, not good!! She SO WANTS it, so kinda funny how we are all “name that tune?!!” about her.
