Gwyneth Paltrow channels Audrey, Madonna & Farrah for Max Factor campaign

goop3

Over the years, I’ve seen some really great editorials where models or actresses are “transformed” into homages to style icons of the past. I remember one with Natalia Vodianova several years ago, where Vogue made her look like iconic models through the decades, like Suzy Parker, Twiggy and Lauren Hutton and more. I’ve also seen some really terrible homages, of course. I’m thinking anything involving Lindsay Lohan and anything involving any homage to Marilyn Monroe.

So, how does this rank? Max Factor is celebrating their “100 Years of Glamour” campaign, and they’re using their current “face” Gwyneth Paltrow. They made her (FORCED HER) to homage Madonna, Farrah Fawcett, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot. HOW GAUCHE. How unspeakably peasanty. Does Max Factor not realize that Gwyneth is already an iconic beauty? And why did they not force her to homage Grace Kelly? She SO wanted to be Grace Kelly in her early years.

Anyway, I think the concept could have been cool, but the execution is off, and that’s only partly Gwyneth’s fault. I realize we’re supposed to just look at the makeup, but how is that Goop’s Farrah hair looks so FLAT and unfeathered? Why does her Bardot hair look so stringy and greasy? Why does her Madonna style look nothing like ‘80s Madonna? And while some of you yell at me for being hyper-critical of Goop (how can I not? She’s hyper-critical of the peasants!), I have to say: she’s a terrible model. I think she used to be a decent-to-good actress, but her modeling skillz are lacking. She really only has two looks as a model: simpering or constipated. (Still better than Cara Delevingne though YES I SAID IT.)

To be honest, the only person it looks like she’s channeling is herself.

    • Jem says:

      Yup

    • Snazzy says:

IKR? She just looks like herself dressed up … not channelling anyone!

    • Nicolette says:

      Agree.

    • Ag says:

i agree – i would never think “oh, this is supposed to be madonna etc.” i would have never guessed who they were going for (well, except audrey) if it wasn’t for the descriptions. it only looks like goop playing dress-up.

      • Stef Leppard says:

Is the gold dress pic supposed to be Farrah? It’s like they didn’t even bother trying to actually make her hair look anything like Farrah’s. They just gave her a blowout and slapped a “Farrah” label on it.

      • Miss M says:

I thought it was Cindy Lauper not Madonna.

    • Mmhmm says:

Agreed! But I have to admit I think she looks good in some of these pics…I don’t want to punch her face in these pics.

    • JJ says:

These are not really great pictures, honestly the make up almost looks cheap, esp that Madonna pic.

She did a great photo shoot for a Japanese (I think) magazine some months ago. She still looks amazing.

    • Lisa says:

Just the way she likes it!

    • swack says:

Agree. If they wanted to channel these actresses properly then maybe they should have used a dark wig on her for Audrey Hepburn. Looks like she is playing dress up.

      • Trashaddict says:

Please do not mention Gwyneth in the same breath as Audrey, you are upsetting me. Audrey had massive class and, as far as I can tell, no pretension whatsoever. She might as well try to channel Niagara Falls, it just ain’t happening.

    • Tiffany :) says:

The Bridgette Bardot shot makes cringe with embarrassment. The hair looks terrible (did Bardot have crispy hair?) and she just looks awkward trying to do the sex kitten thing. Yikes.

      • wonderwoman21 says:

she doesn’t look like Brigitte Bardot but honestly that is the best I’ve ever seen her look

      • DrM says:

Yup the BB shot is particularly bad. It looks like a wig has been plonked on her head and she’s been told to think of something profound….which to GOOP would mean GOOP

  2. Lilacflowers says:

That middle picture looks like one of the Olsen twins.

  3. Kaye says:

I can’t even tell which is which.

    • enastein says:

      +1000

      • QQ says:

Me neither I just thought she looked dated greasy haired in one pic and more lipless than usual

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Me neither, Kaye.

    • magpie says:

Styling is awful. I wouldn’t have even known it was Farrah F or Bardot if I hadn’t read the text before. The Madonna one is so weak. Wonder what Madge thinks about Goops dressing as her?

    • swack says:

Just because of the hair (in the pics below the story): first one Audrey Hepburn, second one Bridget Bardot, third, Farrah Fawcett and last Madonna. JMO

  4. Jem says:

As IF Goop would use Max Factor…

  5. Lollipop says:

She looks good in the Bardot picture, in the others, not so much.
I thinks Goopy is really beautiful. she looked breathtaking in that stupid Shallow Hal movie.

    • SpookySpooks says:

I think she’s beautiful too, especially in the Royal Tanenbaums.

      • Kiddo says:

I think she’s pretty too, but she doesn’t have anywhere near the sex appeal of Bardot. I think it’s tough to replicate without the sensual lips. Also, I don’t understand why the stylist decided to make the hair so stringy in that look.

        http://wallpapers88.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Brigitte-Bardot-001.jpg

      • Pinky Rose says:

I have a soft spot for The Goop, but have never really think of her as really beautiful. Back in the nineties and early aughts she was pretty, but also very generic and bland. And now she just ok and sometimes looks ehmm harsh. Nothing special.

  6. GiGi says:

    This is terrible.

  7. Esmom says:

Agree that the execution is off. I think the Audrey one comes the closest to working but maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for that polished, retro looks. Mad Men actually has done a better job of that now that I mention it.

  8. evadstructn says:

All of these photos are terrible.

    • kri says:

Absolutely a complete fail. She looks like her boring self in every single one. Who did they hire to style this-the makeup lady at Walgreens? No-cause she would have done a better job. Maybe GOO herself? Yep. And it looks like Glammerr Shotz did the camera work. Awful, bad, NO.

  9. Sullivan says:

She looks good in all of them. I don’t think the idea was to exactly replicate the iconic looks.

  10. Eleonoy says:

Goops is a mess as a model, but the stilying is so poor.

  11. Nicolette says:

The ‘Madonna’ photo looks like a little girl that has raided her mommy’s make up bag and is playing dress up.

    • Esmom says:

Agree to a certain degree…I remember 80s cosmetics ads and many of the models really did look like that. I think they exaggerate some of the looks to showcase their products. But still, this look doesn’t do Goop any favors.

  12. Kiddo says:

She resembles none of those people, although maybe that wasn’t the intent. But then why name each look? They should have just made it Max Factor through the decades or something less specific.

  13. Micha says:

whaaat! Cara is a great model! (I don’t care for her private life and it’s true that she got her start in the business through her family’s connenctions; but really, she kills it in editorials. Not so much on the runway, though.)

As for Goop, meh. She just doesn’t make me feel strongly about anything she’s involved in. It’s always just “meh, same old same old”.

    • Allie says:

I was just going to say that! Cara might be entitled and immature, but girl knows how to model.

  14. Eileen says:

Well it’s official Max Factor you’ve scraped the bottom of the celebrity barrel-I would rather have seen a mannequin dressed and styled for iconic looks of these decades than her anytime, any day

  15. Jaderu says:

I don’t know. I don’t think they’re that bad. I like the Bardot the most.
    Meh…at least she’s not talking.

  16. Adrien says:

Various iconic film stars made to look like Gwyneth. Who’s she supposed to be in every picture? The Farrah Fawcett looks like Gwyneth. The Madonna looks like Claire Danes. The Bardot looks like Sierra Miller in Factory Girl. The Audrey looks like…what even is that?

  17. Tiffany says:

I thought the whole point of celebrity endorsements was to get more people to buy
your product and open it up to a different market. So why is Gwyneth their spokesperson. She is losing people and interest in her day by day and it only talked about on gossip sites. Is MF really getting a return on her contract.

  18. allons-y alonso says:

    DEAR GOD WHY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  19. Black orchid, says:

Madonna is goin to laugh her ass off

  20. db says:

Meh. The campaign doesn’t offend me — “homage” here, to me, means alluding to another artist’s persona, not replicating it exactly.

  21. annaloo. says:

    The backgrounds look great.

  22. R says:

Does her image actually sell products?

    • Lauren says:

Is Goop aware that the great grandson of Max Factor is a convicted serial rapist? His name is Andrew Luster. Very disturbing.
These pics are unflattering and harsh. I would never buy Max Factor products, and Goop just reinforced my choice.

  23. spaniard says:

She looks beautiful in all of them, but she doesn’t resemble any of the ladies she is supposedly chanelling.

  24. Savanna says:

Ugh as an Audrey fanatic the “homage” makes me sick. But it does whenever anyone tries to do it. The only one I approve of is Natalie Portman in the actual Breakfast at Tiffany’s Givenchy in Harper’s Bazaar back in 2006.

AND THAT IS MY RANT. It’s beautiful here in Chicagoland, have a great day!

    • Esmom says:

It is an amazing day here in Chi isn’t it? My door is open to the cool morning breeze and the sun is just dazzling. Enjoy!

  25. mystified says:

Sorry, these photos only highlight Goop’s shortcomings. Goop is much prettier as herself. Goop should never do Farrah since Farrah’s hair was great and Goop’s is a disaster. The Bardot picture only highlights Goop’s so-so mouth when compared to Bardot’s perfect one. The Madonna one is one sorry picture! The Audrey one is the best but it seems that just about every celebrity uses it at some point (wasn’t that on Lauren Conrad’s book?).

  26. Mesia says:

    Lol these are so bad.

  27. Candy Love says:

All I want to know is which one is Madonna.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Madonna heard about this and saw the picture. I wouldn’t be surprised if Madonna post something on Instagram soon .

  28. smee says:

It’s a swing and a MISS! She doesn’t look like any of those women.

IMO, she was a pretty young woman and now she looks like rich, pretty mom. If her parents hadn’t been her parents I very much doubt she would have had success as an actress and certainly not as a model.

  29. Faye says:

I think I feel legit sympathy for Gwyneth for the first time ever. This is so tragic it calls for a triple colon cleanse and four weeks of juicing only to recover.

  30. Sandy says:

She is trying way too hard! And I have never seen so much air-brushing in my life. I guess she’s trying to compete with Chris’ new girlfriend, Alexa Chung?

  31. pnichols says:

She looks constipated in that second picture.

  32. Flowerpot says:

The Madonna photo looks like Glamour Shots

  33. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

And, despite all the icon channelling, they made her look just like Kate Hudson.

  34. Nicole says:

I agree that they wasted an opportunity to let her channel herself. I’m with all of you on how obnoxious she can be in interviews (and especially how dumb her fake medical stuff is) but she is freaking beautiful and she’s very distinct looking. Any editorial that lets Gwyneth be Gwyneth, minus the middle part, is going to be gorgeous.

  35. babyb says:

i bet she didn’t want to wear wigs…it’d ben so much better…not her thin flat hair..especially for audrey..blonde???

  36. Dawn says:

I think she was a failure at trying to channel anyone other than herself. All these women were/are one of a kind and trying to channel them by anyone is simply wrong.

  37. Deedee says:

The only one pic i like is Bardot, and that’s because she is looking downward so i cant see much of her face.

  38. ncboudicca says:

Those women were all sexy in some way – and Gwyneth is not sexy at all. She doesn’t even look like she has her heart in these photos. Maybe she knew how bad they’d be.

And I am the only one who gets “Cheryl Tiegs” from the disco-era photo instead of “Farrah”?

  39. Whitney says:

I am shocked I do not find these to be terrible, for Goop if she was being Goop. Otherwise, she’s no Audrey especially.

  40. Gistine says:

    Block head scarecrow face.

  41. Kate2 says:

She really is gorgeous, and I think she looks great in the “Farrah” picture, but not as Farrah, just as herself.

I blame the stylist more than Gwyneth on this one. And I agree her hair looks stringy and gross in the Bardot pic.

I know there are others here who lived through the 80’s (as a teenager, no less) and distinctly remember what the makeup and clothes were like. Ugh. I can’t even. Neon earrings to match your neon top and socks, with white keds? Please. Maybe throw in a neon headband or scrunchie. I shudder to think that I was into that stuff. My go to outfit was some bulky top with denim mini and leggings, with ballet flats. And huge, massive, teased and sprayed hair. I still have the big hair, just not AS big.

Give me 90’s grunge fashion ANY FREAKING DAY over 80’s. Flannel forever, baby.

    • Alarmjaguar says:

It is like you are describing high school me…oh the matching sock/earring/scrunchie combo, I loved it!

  42. Jayna says:

She didn’t channel any of those women, to me.

  43. Cinderella says:

    This just didn’t work out.

  44. Mingy says:

Ummm no…She cleansed away all of her sexiness..if she had any to begin with.

  45. Magoo says:

I don’t get it. She should be fronting a high end brand or an eco brand. Max Factor is not in line with the GOOP image. I don’t understand why she signed deals with Max Factor or Hugo Boss, unless the higher tier brands don’t want her. Is she less marketable than Marion Cotillard or Nicole Kidman? GP has an Oscar but doesn’t work on many films. Perhaps her stalled career and her bickering with the lower classes are costing her endorsement deals.

    • poppy says:

notice how unlike her este lauder contract, there is zero mention of how much money she is making for this or any of her other endorsement deals. goopster is definitely budget now. my how the mighty (in her own mind) have fallen. she was never high end enough for dior or chanel. the best she ever did was tod’s. Her next stop is wet-n-wild -if they’d even have her.

  46. Josefa says:

Funny thing an actual actress did a worse job portraying style icons than most models. I know what Natalia editorial you’re talking about, it was gorgeous. There was this Veruschcka picture in particular which was just stunning.

  47. candy corn says:

That Hepburn look made me laugh. Goopy is trying to look demure but she still comes off as stuck up. It’s like her bitchiness oozes out of her skin pores and can’t be masked by makeup.

  48. Overrated says:

Always thought her beauty was overrated and that the only person completely convinced of it was Goop. She’s so plain; I don’t get it. Never will.

  49. Debutante says:

Boy, these pics are all pretty poor. I take the most issue with the Madonna picture. Madonna did not have pencil thin eyebrows in the 80’s !! Quite the opposite ! Madonna also oozed sex, not cheap colorful makeup like this picture. This looks more like Boy George’s make up !! LOL

  50. homegrrrl says:

I thought the crispy hair photo was supposed to be Glenn Close in fatal attraction.

  51. nancy says:

    she looks like kate hudson

  52. anne says:

Wow, what an insult to these legends! I remember hearing she was infuriated when her last planned Max Factor campaign that she worked so hard on, and was very hyped, was cut. It was the one that was to show the many incredible sides of Gwyneth (uck!), the Writer, Gwyneth the Mom, Gwyneth the Career Woman etc. and she was thrilled because she thought this slew of advertising would show her in all her truly glory and show the world how amazing she truly is just me me me me…(really!). Don’t remember when it was supposed to have happened – I think it was around maybe the Holidays last year because a friend of mine that is forced to work with her, remembers her being hysterically jealous and just livid that the Charlize Theron J’Adore ads they show every Holiday were being shown so much in print and on TV, while meanwhile her big hopes for her own ads were pulled. (As if there could ever be any comparison, Charlize’s J’adore ads are a classic! So beautiful all that gold, etc.). Anyway Max Factor after spending HUGE amount of $$ on the planned ad campaign either cut it entirely or it basically was cut to nothing, due to her huge unpopularity at the time (so could have been anytime 🙂 and suffered a tremendous revenue loss because of money they had invested in it, but slashed it anyway. So being that they are under legal contract with her, which includes her creative input hence the first series – the Amazing Gwyneth thinks she is in these Icon’s league and thinks it should be assumed. Or maybe Max Factor decided to try to make her as un-Gwyneth like as possible, as she is even more loathed now. Looks like another fail to me. She looks like same old photoshopped, glammed up Gwyneth to me in all of them. And an insult to the likes of Audrey Hepburn, et al that are true “Icons”, not the “icons” of today, where the word is tossed around very lightly. Some say that is why she suddenly stuck up attempt at friendship with Charlize, to see how to get her commercials shown more etc. (Sounds very Goopish alright) and also because Charlize (by her choice) doesn’t hang with the Hollywood Mom’s club which Gwyneth is not wanted in. GP of course assumed was an automatic in and tried and tried but they for good reason, can’t stand her – or the way they are told to socialize with her for her PR by mutual mgmt., etc. And the few that did barely tolerate her, have ditched her totally now that Chris is out of the picture, they actually liked him! So good luck Chris and the kids and get lost Gwyneth – you are not even worthy of dressing up like any of these ladies! She is considered a liability not an asset these days that’s for sure (personally and professionally). her own fault for being a witch for decades, chose one of the wonderful women out there to represent your companies people! Not too many want to see more of Gwyneth.

  53. kitty-bye says:

I thought max factor stopped making makeup! I didn’t realize it was “discontinued” in America only? 😮
