Robert Downey Jr. couldn’t let Ryan Gosling steal the baby thunder! RDJ announced yesterday that he and his mega-producer wife Susan are expecting their second child together (and Robert’s third kid overall). Susan just gave birth to their son… let’s see… oh, it was in February 2012. I thought it was just, like, one year ago. Nope. Exton Elias Downey is now two and a half years old. So, how did Downey announce it? One of the best ways possible: a pithy tweet that read, “Yo. Susan. Me. Baby. Girl. November. Scorpio?”

And People confirmed the news, so it’s not like it’s a rogue, hijacked tweet or whatever. RDJ is going to be father to a little girl. His first daughter. That will be pretty magical. Congrats to Robert and Susan!
PS… I kind of wonder about the family dynamics of Robert’s situation with his son Indio, who is apparently now in rehab for the millionth time following his arrest in West Hollywood a few weekends ago. Does Indio feel “replaced” by his dad’s new family? Does Robert feel like “this time it will be different” and like he has another chance to do things “right” this time?

I feel like this news won’t help Indio…his dad will be busy with a new baby, while he’s trying to get his life back on track.
I always remember RDJ saying he became clean for SUSAN. So not his ex, not SJP (who apparently was very nurturing and patient but he was at his drug peak during their dating years) and not his son. If I was RDJ’s kid, that must sting if you find that on the internet.
Yeah I remember reading that somewhere. Susan was like, get clean or get out. And he did. But that’s gotta sting your kid. Your Dad won’t get clean for you, but for his new wife. Ouch.
I mean, I’m sure RDJ loves his son immensely, but quotes like that get taken out of context and it just sounds so bad.
When you love an addict, you almost don’t care what the trigger is that gets them clean, as long as they stay clean. I’m sure it’s rough, but having his father clean is probably worth it to him.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean by this news won’t help Indio. It’s not like Susan just all of a sudden got pregnant after his drug bust. She’s due in November so she’s probably around 5 months or so. RDJ waited until they knew the sex before he went public.
I love Rob’s subtle way of sharing info about his kids. Instead of selling pics of Exton to mags like People he showed the first pic of Exton on Letterman.
It takes maturity – I think he got clean for a second chance to happy normal life and Susan was the way to it, not for a specific person.

I don’t think Indio will feel replaced at all, I’m sure RDJ is very involved in his life and the younger siblings will be looking up to him. Congratulations to Robert & Susan.

Of course he’s doing things differently now, since he was still and addict when Indio was a child.. but still, now, I can’t blame him. I don’t know about their family issues, but I don’t think Indio was less loved, a lot of kids have divorced parents and new families after all and they’re more or less fine. Also it’s been a while now since RDJ married Susan so Indio should just accept it, grow the hell up and get help.
Anyway I’m sure RDJ is thrilled about having a little girl! So happy for him! I hope they won’t give her a weird name..

I have no reason to believe he hasn’t, but I would hope any parents and step-parents of kids who do have trouble adjusting in blended family situations are mature enough to acknowledge and accept their kids feelings and get the family the help they all need to make it work.
Reminds me of Michael Douglas and his son from his first marriage who’s a drug addict and in trouble. Sadly, the children from the early marriage(s) when the actors were young and immature and selfish and often going through their addictions, didn’t get the best of their parent while the second family does since they’ve often matured and appreciate things more. Not fair, but that’s often the case. To give them credit though, in both cases they have admitted not being the best parent the first time around and have tried to help their older kids now that they know better. Damage is done to some extent, but at some point it becomes the choice of the kid to either continue to ruin their lives or get clean and sober and forge a new and better relationship with the parent going forward. I hope the latter for both these first sons.

That’s awesome. I like them so much. As someone else said, hopefully Indio won’t see this as a threat, rather inspiration. He now has two little guys who will want to worship him and look up to him. Congrats and good luck to all….
From what I’ve seen, it depends on how the adults have handled the stuation. Sometimes it’s like you’ve described. Other times kids from previous marriages feel they are expected to adapt to whatever their parents are up to, or feel lost in the shuffle of busy careers and excitement over new relationships and babies.
I absolutely love these two together. They make me happy. A baby girl is going to be such a wonderful addition to their family!

The only way for Indio to feel resentful or replaced is entirely upto all 3 parents. Let’s not forget Indio’s mother.
I saw RDJ’s message on FB about him and Susan expecting a girl. It was cute. I know he’s made a lot of mistakes in his life, but he’s cleaned up, owned up and seems to be trying to keep on the straight and narrow now. I find him immensely likeable. Clearly Susan is good for him and I wish them and their family much happiness!
I love her. She’s truly the best thing that ever happened to him. Dig that she’s real, not a famewhore, seemingly fun-loving and keeps his wild ass grounded.

I adore RDJ, warts and all. Heartfelt congrats to the whole family. A little girl for RDJ! She’ll be adored from the moment she was conceived. So happy for all of them. Maybe this will give Indio something more to work for. He’ll have a little sis to spoil. I have no doubts that Susan and RDJ do everything in their power to help their oldest son and he won’t feel replaced In any way. RDJ just would not allow him to persist in thinking that way. He will just love that kid well. If anyone can do it, he can.
