Blake Lively does Vogue’s ’73 Questions’: surprisingly charming or just bland?

blake1

Vogue has been doing this newish feature lately, where they basically give a guy a camera and tell him to ask “73 Questions” (easy-peasy questions) directly to a celebrity woman. It’s like an interesting take on the “behind the scenes” magazine features and I guess Vogue is somewhat original for the way they’re carrying it out. Sarah Jessica Parker did a memorable 73 Questions (she was the first one) and I would give SJP bonus points because she let them film inside her NYC home. Anyway, Blake is the latest subject of Vogue’s 73 Questions, probably to go along with her Vogue cover. Here you go:

Call me crazy, but I sort of like the way she comes across here. Is this how she is normally? Because she’s sexier and more interesting in action, as herself. I don’t think much of her as an actress or a model, but she’s charming as “herself”. I could totally see her hosting some kind of cooking or lifestyle show because she’s got that sort of watchable quality.

As for her answers and activities… I like that she takes off her shoes as soon as she gets in the apartment. Her dress is sexy and boob-tastic. She really cares about icing that cupcake too. She’s a dog person, she loves desserts, she cares about family and she refers to her “husband” (never his name) a few times. But some of her answers were BS. When asked which Sex & the City character she identifies with, she says “mostly… the men?” No, Blake. You are Charlotte and Carrie. You are Charlotte and Carrie SO HARD.

I found this unwatchably bad. Almost as bad as the Vogue article.

    • Anna says:

BLAAAAAND. And weirdly reminiscent of the one SJP did, but with answers coming across even more cloying and rehearsed.

    • P.J. says:

I agree with you 100% @Hutter but it wasn’t because of Blake.

As several other commenters pointed out, the entire thing just felt so scripted-was it meant to be?-but for me the most uncomfortable thing about the whole video (and it was VERY uncomfortable to watch) was just how rushed, aggressive and bizarre the man behind the camera is. And what the hell is up with the window guy stunt??

Just so strange from start to finish. What is the point of this? Vogue should just stick to their original format (and one that US Weekly currently uses) and leave the rapid fire questions to print with funny, candid answers.

    • Liv says:

Don’t like her. She’s stupid when she thinks that we are all that stupid to believe her talk about baking and cooking. Ugh.

    • Serenity says:

Whaaaaa??? I liked this interview you guys. I kinda thought it was funny. Ok. Rehearsed – yes, but do you blame her? I’d rehearse for some shit like this. I don’t want to be stuck saying, ‘Ummmmm….weeeelllll……ummmm……’ and I actually laughed at the bit at the end. ‘Are we brother and sister?’ Lol.

  2. Bshg says:

I watched the video yesterday and it looked really fake and overthought. It’s not like We have to believe celebrities are actually caught off guards with questions about their private lives, but at least try and make it appear authentic. Sarah Jessica Parker was super cool when she had that Vogue guy coming over her house and she looked genuinly surprised about some questions, also taking a few moments of thought before replying. With Blake, you could sense the whole thing had been thoroughly scripted. She was annoyingly calm and prepared and made sure she had several opportunities to promote her stupid website. Girl, you’re not that good as an actress.

    • SpookySpooks says:

I actually think she seemed more natural than SJP. Of course it seems rehearsed, but SJP just seemd try.hard.

    • Reece says:

Not to mention that she apparently has the ability to decorate cupcakes straight out of the oven. *side eye*

  3. Bshg says:

    (*apologies about the typos*)

  4. Eleonor says:

She is Charlotte with Carrie shoes.

  5. Jegede says:

Blake is someone whose far more charismatic/beautiful in motion than stills.
I’ve thought so since Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and her 2011 IMDB interview

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I like her. She’s just doing her thing. Never understood all the vitriol towards her.

      • mia says:

She is a C-list actress. If you compare her to other actresses in her age group such as Anne Hathaway, Shailene Woodley, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence she has achieved nothing. Not even a Golden Globe nom. When the attention and hype of an actress isn’t proportionate with her achievements people will scratching their heads at why a tarty valley girl whose biggest claim to fame is some teenybopper show on the CW is being handed Vogue covers and luxury contracts.

      • Bridget says:

It’s the overreaching. She has (had?) an amazing agent who put her in discussions for the biggest roles of her age group (Gravity, The Great Gatsby, The Dark Knight Rises) and when she was cast in one of the big roles (Savages) she wasn’t good. She’s given the star treatment when she’s basically a more pleasant Jessica Biel. Even the Euros in Cannes were confused – did you catch the quote where the organizer mentioned that they had no idea that Reynold’s wife was a ‘big’ star?

      • Misti64 says:

#Jegede – Love her and that Vogue cover SLAYS!!!!!!!!!!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I like her, too, OKitten and I think she’s very, very pretty.

OT – thank you for trying to help me yesterday. I’m really, really going to try not to go on those threads anymore. I just keep thinking, if I find the right words, they will understand. But it just ends up upsetting me. But your support meant a lot.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Oh on the Deen thread? No worries at all 😉

I totally understand your sensitivity to the stereotype that the South gets. I have a lot of pride in where I grew up as well and it kills me when I feel like my home is being unfairly maligned. I take it personally because it’s so much a part of who I am.

      • Summer says:

She seems like a nice, pretty, harmless girl. Is it really such a bad thing to be an C-list actress who hasn’t really accomplished as much as her peers? Is towering success the only criteria for being treated as a worthwhile human being these days?

      • gefeylich says:

She has no talent, she’s boring and she’s constantly being shoved in the public eye by cheerleaders such as Anna Wintour, who for some unfathomable reason adores her. She’s really annoying – almost as annoying as AnnE Hathaway and Goop, but even more so because unlike them she doesn’t even have a trace of talent.

      • Serenity says:

Glad some people don’t actively dislike this actress. She’s okay and I liked how she came across in this interview.

      • Angie says:

I’m not a hater or a fan but the vitriol she gets brings out the contrarion in me. Makes me root for her

    • Jegede says:

@O-Kitt gurl you’ve set it off now LOL

And you don’t become a lesser because some see you as B, C, or Z-List. And ‘tarty’ really? Mmmk

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

It’s amazing how angry people get over a “nobody” right? 😉

For such a “bland” actress, she sure generates quite the impassioned opinions about her.

      • Camille (The Original) says:

There’s nothing ‘mean girl’, or nasty about her. She doesn’t hang out with a notorious group of other bitchy Hollywood stars, she hasn’t had any terribly bad scandals ala Lohan etc, I think she’s pretty harmless and I don’t get the hate-on for her either.

  6. KB says:

I actually laughed my ass off at some of her answers and I have never liked her.

“What’s the movie you laughed hardest at?”
    “Shawshank Redemption”

But I do think she had the questions in advance.

  7. escondista says:

When it started I wasn’t sure if this was an interview or a porno.
It seemed pretty cutesy planned but she wasn’t as try-hard as I thought she might be in a self-promotion Vogue video…she was downright likeable.

  8. cari says:

I agree she must have known these questions before. She was so quick to answer. However, I found her to be sweet. She seems like a likeable person.

  9. Heather H says:

It was a cute video. I think she was genuinely sad she lost her cupcake.

  10. Karen says:

That is such a Carrie thing to say ;)“mostly… the men?”

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Ok it was a dumb answer but in her defense, maybe she just doesn’t like the show. I have female friends that think SATC was downright insulting to women (I loved it myself) so maybe that was her polite way of saying “none of them”?

Blake has always struck me as very low-drama. Yes, she can seem incredibly bland but I think she’s just a mellow Cali girl at heart.

      • Happy21 says:

Thank you!!! I was one of those women! I loved the clothes and the shoes but I hated how the women were portrayed so I never watched more than a couple of episodes but I have friends who were mad about SATC and didn’t get where I was coming from. I’m so glad though to know that I wasn’t alone!

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Nope. I have a LOT of friends who thought it was a terrible, trashy, and anti-feminist show.

      • M.A.F. says:

I always liked the one episode where for a moment Miranda gets annoyed and yells “all we talk about is men, there is more to life than men” then storms out of the restaurant (not the exact wording but close enough). But then again, that was the main focus of the show.

  11. LDUB says:

She seems perfectly unrehearsed if that makes any sense. Not a bad thing, actually a really good thing to have in a host; like I can see her sitting in for Kelly Ripa when she’s on vacay or whatever.

  12. Jem says:

Call me crazy, I think she’s quite charming. I find her more tolerable than Goopy, for sure. Maybe I just need more coffee.

    • Erinn says:

I like her too. She’s harmless, and a bit amusing, and she has a really friendly smile.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Ok my third comment (too many already) but I never understood the Goop comparisons. FTR, I don’t find Goop as terrible as most do around here. I find her kind of amusing and rather ridiculous, but not “insufferable”. But Blake just seems like a chill girl. I find her more genuine than the average celeb and for someone who was labeled a “fame ho” over and over again, I really think she tries to keep her personal life private for the most part, while still trying to carve out a career for herself.

I don’t know…I think the girl is ok, that’s all.

      • Erinn says:

I think she’s OK too. And I agree. She seems genuine. I also don’t hate Goop, so there’s that too.

      • Josefa says:

I agree. She seems dumb and rather basic but I think she’s harmless. Her dumbness looks genuine.

I think of Goop as the token bitch of reality shows. She must be a total pain to live with, but as mere spectators, she sure is entertaining.

  13. Nev says:

    I miss Charlotte!!!! haha

  14. Lauren says:

Ugh that seemed SO scripted and rehearsed! Like a bad play.

  15. maybeiamcrazy says:

She seems sweet. But I have never heard anything indicate otherwise so I am not shocked. She is a fashion girl with a smokin’ hot body and she seems like she is the epitome of easy-going and harmless. Don’t get the hate.

    • Serenity says:

Thank goodness there’s a few of us who think she’s nice. The rest are bashing her upthread 😉

  16. Talie says:

I was hoping she would do her house, but whatever. That apartment is sick!

  17. Selina says:

Nice posing with the baked goods that never enter her mouth. Just like all the chocolate we’re supposed to believe she eats.

  18. Barbara says:

I couldn’t understand some of her answers – or his questions – but then again I’m not a native.
She’s so cute and chill. It’s sad to know people badmouth her all the time when she seems like the sweetest girl and whoever knows her in person says along the same lines.

  19. The New Classic says:

She seems so charming, down to earth and intelligent. I really am starting to like her based on this interview.

    • Nev says:

      WORD.

Love her voice. She’s clever. Happening.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

It always makes my day when you chime in with a “happening”. “Word” is good too but “happening” is the best 🙂

  20. TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

I’m old school I want to see models on fashion mags – Joan Smalls, Lara Stone; hell, even cocaine Kate – and she’s a wannabee fashion girl, her “style” seems to be an image consultant’s notion, not from her personality; btw, does anyone even remember the GG.
Anyway, what passes for popular culture is so fragmented and market driven, that the term “style icon” is probably passé. Sadly, even the 80s are long gone.

  21. Happy21 says:

I have always been a fan. She seems genuinely sweet to me.

  22. raindrop says:

Her? She’s the Ann Veal of celebrity lifestyle bloggers.

  23. imstupid says:

I like her, she’s pretty and harmless.

  24. rudy says:

She’s bland and only a mediocre actress. I liked her in the first Traveling Pants movie. But then she had her nose fixed. After that, all downhill from there. She turned herself into a parody of herself. Boring, boring, and more boring.

  25. Lydia says:

Her new implants are too big for her and also appear to be lopsided.

    • M.A.F. says:

I was thinking the same thing (not new implants but the lopsidedness). It could be the way the dress is cut on the top.

  26. Alyce says:

I’m a fan. She seems nice and I always root for her bc she’s the target of so much irrational hatred. I like the video 🙂

  27. Lover says:

I like her but I think she’s way too superficial re fashion and posing on the red carpet and her love of “authenticity” and “artisan” items too over the top. That striped mug ($49 on Preserve) is the ugliest thing ever!

    • Annie says:

The name Preserve is just awful. I mean at least the name ‘Goop’ is…Funny? Memorable?

  28. M.A.F. says:

What an odd video intro. The whole thing was too rehearsed for me but eh.

  29. Lydia says:

    This was so rehearsed, though.

  30. I Choose Me says:

I like her and I liked the video even though I think some of the questions asked were dumb.
