Chris Evans does the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in a suit: charming?

Color me surprised. Chris Evans did the ALS ice bucket challenge after being nominated by Chris Hemworth. Evans delivered a very charming rendition of this challenge. He first apologized for not making the 24 hour deadline and said his donation has already been made. He lectured the other celebrities for pouring in the ice immediately before dunking themselves. Evans preferred to let the water/ice combo “marinate” for 30 minutes (to deliver a proper chill). He also called out the white t-shirt and bikini brigade: “For me personally, when I bring awareness to a charity, I prefer a more formal setting. so, excuse me.” Evans then donned a fancy suit and tie before getting dunked. BAM.

Evans really enjoyed playing to the camera and getting in on the cause. He nominated his Snowpiercer co-stars: Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, and Jamie Bell. Aaaaand he nominated his Winter Soldier buddies: Frank Grillo, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan. Throw down that gauntlet, Captain America!

The gauntlet has been duly thrown, bitches. Anyone who gets nominated by Cap has to comply. It’s a universal law. Will Tilda step up? I’ll lick my shoe if Tilda does the challenge (the top of the shoe, not the bottom). Will Mackie make it weird? Poor Sebastian Stan. If he’d done the challenge when he was first nominated, then it would have been a simple affair. Now that all these other celebs have done their thing, Sebastian will have to get creative and come up with a good shtick. Oh, the pressure.

Countless other celebs have done the ALS challenge, and we’ve talked about so many of them already. I think my favorite is a tie between Chris Pratt and Sparkles, although shrieking Marco Perego did well too. I’m going to get random and include Chris Meloni’s video. This is actually a video of him after he took the plunge, but his daughter failed to record the video. Oops.

Meloni did the challenge again. It wasn’t as good in the final video (which you can see here). Chris nominated Mariska Hargitay (her vid is here).

Are you tired of these videos yet? Please catch this one. You have to watch the whole video, which is an epic testimonial from Anthony Carbajal, who was recently diagnosed with ALS at age 26. This is a powerful message and what it’s really all about.

Really getting tired of this ice bucket over the head thing. Why not try something really innovative and entertaining…like…perhaps, bobbing for french fries?

    • Kiddo says:

You and me both. Just send money.

    • LadyMTL says:

Add me to the list of people who are getting sick of this. Don’t get me wrong, I think anything that brings awareness / helps raise money for charity – and this challenge has obviously done a great deal for the ALS society – is wonderful, but the constant barrage of videos is boring me.

      • LT says:

        Then don’t watch them.

The videos and the Ice Bucket challenge have so far raised $53.3m, $12.5m in the last day. Last YEAR they raised $2m.

I hope it goes on as long as it’s making money for the charity.

    • Lady Macbeth says:

Bit tired too at this point, however.. Chris Evans’ was awesome!!!!

    • EEV says:

It was starting to get to me, but after watching Anthony Carbajal’s video (the last one embedded here), I realized that a bucket of ice water over the head pales in comparison to the blow of being diagnosed with ALS. I guess I changed my view to see it as everyone collectively taking one for the team on behalf of ALS sufferers. 🙂

      • Miss Melissa says:

Anything that raises awareness is OK with me.

      • T.C. says:

I can’t get enough of the ALS challenge videos. They are all funny and interesting in their way. People need to read up on ALS to see what a horrible disease it really is and how deserving it is to be getting some attention finally. No one is being forced to watch these videos and every charity event has detractors anyway.

All these celebrities doing the ice bucket challenge still donate money and it’s one of the few gimmicks that really works to get both men and women involved in a good cause by doing something fun and public. The person who came up with it is a genius.

      +1

    • Esmom says:

I swore yesterday or two days ago that I wouldn’t watch another one but I succumbed to this one. Yes, charming, love him.

And somehow I missed Sparkles’s earlier this week so I had to check it out. Charming, as expected, albeit very different from Chris’s.

      OK, enough now.

  2. Nessa says:

Charming!!!! I thought this was one of the better ones I have seen. He is the perfect combination of adorable and hot. It’s so cute that he had his family partake with him.

  3. Nells says:

Have you seen the Foo Fighters video? Phenomenal!

  4. allons-y alonso says:

Bless Chris Evans! That was great 🙂 Dave Grohl’s however is still the best one I’ve seen.

  5. Lilacflowers says:

My super secret husband Chris looks very dapper in his suit and well-rested after vacationing with the family. Love the Halloween bucket.

  6. Abbott says:

I was getting super irritated by the incessant Ice Bucket Challenge videos until I saw Anthony Carbajal’s video above. Not only did the first few minutes make me laugh, but when he explains why it is so important that this cause is at the forefront of our news, I cried all the liquids out of my body. (<<<There's an ice bucket joke in there somewhere but the dust in my office won't let me make it right now.)

    • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Yep, I saw it on the online newspaper this morning… Laughed and cried… It’s really, really complicated… The mothers of 2 friends of mine suffer from this, one has passed away several years ago, the other, well, she’s … Horrible, just horrible disease…

    • EEV says:

I just mentioned the same thing upstream! 🙂

  7. Kali says:

Ah man, he’s totally growing on me. Although I’m waiting for my husband, Mr Grumpy Cat, and his video!! C’mon Renner, hop to it! 😉

  8. Jenns says:

I’m enjoying the celebs doing this challenge.

And damn, he looks so good in that suit.

  9. Leaflet says:

Chris’ was awesome. I love him. He said everything I wanted to say to thirsty celebs. WHY ARE YOU WEARING A BATHING SUIT? Also, Tilda’s was just weird?

  10. Tiffany27 says:

I like that he had his family with him and the little kids were cute.

  11. The Original Mia says:

David Grohl wins hands down. Chris’ is charming as hell. I am down for the Cap’s challenges. Do them together, boys?!

My mom missed my dunking too. She got my reaction to the water. It’s for a great cause and is bringing in tons of money to the cause.

  12. Adrien says:

Chris Meloni videos are useless if they don’t show his Melonis.

  13. Beth says:

I’m sick of watching people I know do it, but I’m not sick of watching hot actors doing it. (side-eye to Benedict)

  14. thedarklady says:

When’s he is not being highly neurotic, Chris Evans can be very funny.
This is my favourite ice bucket video so far. 😛

  15. Blythe says:

His beard does it all for me. I only like Scruffy Chris Evans.

  16. Bubu says:

The bad thing about this is that water is being wasted where in other places is precious and in great need 🙁

    • T.C. says:

Wait, you see pics and videos of celebrities in their huge lavish pools all the time and say nothing about that wasted water but are worried about a handful of buckets of water being used to bring attention to a horrible debilitating disease? Serious?

They aren’t dumping out truck loads of water and letting it run continuously. Please take time and read up on ALS. Drought is horrible as is ALS. I really hate when people try to pit causes against each other. I don’t see an increase in funds to charities supporting drought infected regions of the world by all those complaining about the ALS challenge.

        TC: +10000000000000000.

And a cup of coffee is like 140 litres (no idea in gallons), I bet all those “oh you´re wasting water and kids in Africa are dying” (but hey these people probably leave the water running or wash their cars etc) have no idea of anything related to ALS, water, drought and a long list of etc.

Sorry the rant, I had a friend that died of a similar desease. It was so painful watching her and knowing that she was aware of what was happening. She was lucky because some friends she had got her medicines at a lower cost, but the med she needed to be a bit better (there´s no cure) cost 5.000 dollars per month (she didn´t live in the States). She lived just a year and a half after she was diagnoses. That´s why it pisses me off big time when people talk without knowing.

    • gee says:

Every day people waste more water brushing their teeth.

Drought is a serious issue but in places where there isn’t any drought not conserving water doesn’t affect those where there is a drought. As far as I know, no one is transporting saved or excess water anywhere, and in places with abundance reservoirs regularly just flood over.

  17. eribra says:

Anthony’s video gutted me, made me remember way back as a cna, on a vent unit, taking care of several ALS patients. It’s a horrible disease and he really personalizes it.

  18. Miss M says:

Love me some Chris Evans. It seems he is in MA … *thinking*

ps: Charlie Sheen and John Cryer did it too and each one of them donated 10,000 dollars.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, that does look like the Boston suburbs, doesn’t it? And there are recent pictures floating around of him hanging with Rob Gronkowski.

  19. pleaseicu says:

Love him. Love that he’s wearing a likely designer suit and pulling out Halloween buckets his family can dump ice water all over him. Loved the callout to others who are dumping ice in and then immediately dumping it all over themselves. He’s right, that’s not ice water. lol

  20. Lucy says:

    Cute!!

  21. Mike says:

I am glad he called out those wimps that cheat on the ice part. Let the water actually get cold before you dump it on yourself. Since it is summer the discomfort will only be seconds long. Or just donate money and say that action (cash) speaks louder than words (or ice.)

Either way I think Chris Evans is pretty cool for the way he handled this

  22. Pants says:

Dave Grohl is my fave of all of the ones I’ve seen so far. Anthony Bourdain’s is second though because it’s just so HIM. LOL

  23. Rorybore says:

Charming perfection. The laughing kids, the halloween buckets, the damn play structure in the backyard. I want adopted into this family. Evans, Pratt and Cumberbatch are my favourites because they just had fun with it, but were also sincere in their attempts to bring awareness AND mention donating. Which is the whole point.
And if you are watching someone die from this disease like I am? You’d get over your annoyance and just be grateful they answered the challenge.
As for the concept of the ice water – that temporary paralysis your body feels when the cold hits your muscles….. that you briefly cannot control your body – the brief pain : now imagine THAT All The Time. until your dead.

  24. Taya says:

So cute! One of my fave IBM clips. But I am so annoyed by celebs not turning their phones to landscape when recording! That’s just a personal pet peeve.

  25. tallo says:

OMG I love Chris Evans!! I think it’s so fantastic that so much money is being raised for such an awful disease. looking forward to all the peoples he nominated meeting the challenge. (I hope Sebastian Stan does wear a white t shirt whilst doing his- my bad)

  26. Maria of MD says:

He does it with style. Love that.

  27. Vl says:

Not watched any challenges so far. Might watch this.
I’d also like to see James McAvoy get wet, then my weekend will be off to a great start.
