Kate Hudson: Gossip ‘magazines really, really want women to look bad’

Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson covers the September issue of Red UK. She’s not promoting any movies, so this must be a push for her Fabletics company. I get a kick out of the Fabletics ads — they appear to promise a tush like Kate’s if you wear her athletic clothing. Has anyone tried their clothes? They pick monthly outfits for you based upon your interests with no obligation to buy. The clothes look basic and functional and promise wicking capabilities. Hmm.

The journo in this interview seems shocked that Kate makes her confirmation call by herself. She also shows up without minders (a nanny for Bing doesn’t count). The topics of the conversation include her enduring engagement and how gossip magazines make women look bad. She also denies having an eating disorder to keep her figure:

Her 3-year engagement to Matt Bellamy: “I’m not in a rush. We are basically married. It is really about when are we going to take the time to plan a wedding.”

On dating/marrying musicians: “After Chris I didn’t think I’d ever date a musician again. That world is difficult. But it is what it is, right? I like people with musicality … I find it attractive.”

Tabloid interest in her love life: “It goes in waves. I think when you are single they just throw you in the fire. When you’re single, you are dating everybody. And you are like, ‘I never even met this person.’ You realise they want every female to be a wh-re. It’s true. These (gossip) magazines really, really want women to look bad. Why would you paint such a bad picture of women that young girls look up to? I will never understand that.”

No eating disorders here: “If there is one thing I will never have, it is an eating disorder. I won’t have girls — even if it is just one or two who care — thinking that. Because it’s a serious sickness, not something to plaster on the cover of a magazine. And I am the opposite. I want to be giving girls the message that, sometimes you do gain 70 pounds having a baby, and you can lose it if you want. The whole point is I want girls to love themselves. I want them to feel good about who they are.’

Journo says Kate should make a fitness DVD: “A lot of people say that.”

Kate is sweet and harmless. I think she’s genuinely aghast at the tabloid discussion of her love life. She’s correct about her dating encounters being sensationalized. Kate usually has long-term relationships, and it’s not like she was stumbling out of clubs and getting it on in public. Her Owen Wilson era was really heavy, but he’s a complicated guy. Their relationship was not a healthy one. I’m glad that she and Matt Bellamy are mostly drama free even though the tabs keep telling it differently.

On the eating disorder topic, Kate has already said that diets should be banned. She doesn’t have problems with food, and she’s responsible enough to realize girls are watching celebrities’ habits. I do think she excessively exercises at times. Kate worked out six hours per day (according to Star) to lose the baby weight. If that story’s true, does that qualify as a disorder?

She’s come out with some comments that I just can’t get behind, and I don’t find her compelling as an actress, but live and let live and all that jazz.

  2. Aliceinwonderland says:

She never worked out 6 hours a day & corrected that in an interview once. It was just another case of a tabloid getting the story wrong.

    • TrixC says:

6 hours a day is excessive and barely possible. If it was 2, I’d say that’s reasonable, given it’s part of her job to look a certain way.

  3. AryaMartell says:

Celebitchy aside, I think she’s right about tabloids making women look bad. Especially the ones owned by Rupert Murdoch. It really has started to disgust me and honestly I’ve been scaled back my tabloid reading to pretty much this site only for those reasons.

All in all, I think Kate is the most human out of all the celebrities. She doesn’t pretend to be anyone she isn’t. I really think her marriage to the guy from the Black Crows and her relationship with Owen Wilson messed her up a bit. But she got out and she seems pretty low-key for the most part. She seems really healthy and realistic but she understands that the tabloids can have an effect on her career. Hence the emphasis on physical fitnesx. Her career is not as hot and if her body is out of shape l doubt she’d ever star in another rom-com agaon and she can now brand herself different as she has proven to take physical fitness seriously.

    • HH says:

“Her career is not as hot and if her body is out of shape” – That’s what I got out of her exercising so hard to lose weight. Her looking good is her money maker.

  4. Kate2 says:

I like her. I’m a big Ann Taylor girl, and she is working with them. I love all the stuff she “picks”.

She doesn’t bother me though. I’m meh about her acting, but I think she could be very successful in fashion or something like Nicole Richie.

    • Observer says:

Don’t you think it’s weird that she is the face of a clothing company that doesn’t represent her casual style? I have never seen her wear Anne Taylor in any pap pics…her style seems more laid back, t-shirt and jeans kind of girl.
It always annoys me when celebrities don’t match with the brand they are selling.

Every time I see Kate Hudson I can’t help but wonder what Goldie is up to? I had the biggest girl crush on Goldie Hawn for so many years. Kate looks so much like her.

    • AryaMartell says:

I do too, I feel like Kate probably gets that a lot and that she should be distinct from Goldie but I just can’t help but wonder what Goldie is up to.

    • mystified says:

I also like that there does not seem to be any tension or competition between Goldie and Kate. They seem to be close yet clearly independent. To me, this makes them both seem mature, compassionate, and realistic.

      Kudos to both of them.

  6. Mischa Jane says:

If wearing Fabletics will give me her ass, I’m in. I just have to wear them, right? And then I magically get a Kate tush?

  7. SpookySpooks says:

I don’t get such long engagements. Maybe it’s a cultural thing? Here, when you get engaged, you start planning the wedding. Why get engaged if you don’t? Why not just stay girlfriend and boyfriend?

    • Peaches says:

I’m with you on that one. I think It’s okay to not start planning the wedding right away, but three years? Why get engaged in the first place?

  8. Polkasox says:

I’m a fabletics member, have been for a few months. Their stuff does make your ass look good, but really no more than any other tight spandex workout pants. (My nike running tights also make my ass look great) it’s pretty affordable stuff & holds up decently (like I said, I’ve only been a member for a few months) everything is cut pretty slim though. If you like baggy workout clothes, this is NOT the line for you. Also, if you don’t “opt out” every month to your monthly outfit, you get charged. So if you’re not on the ball, you might not like it. Overall it’s not a bad service to get some cute new gym clothes.
