Rachel McAdams is probably the female lead in ‘True Detective’: yay or nay?

Even though I’m really annoyed by it, I have to give True Detective producers some props for the most exciting casting-watch of the year. Everybody has an opinion of who should be and who should not be in Season 2 of True Detective and we don’t even know the story/crime. Earlier this week, we heard that Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell have FOR SURE been cast in Season 2. Colin will be playing one the cops and Vince will be playing some kind of career criminal. I’m assuming Vince’s character will be a fast-talking con-man type. But you never know.

I’ve been hoping against hope that Elisabeth Moss would be cast as the lead woman, but a million other names came out, including Jessica Biel. I think we could all agree that Biel is a no-go, right? Right. And now it’s looking like Rachel McAdams is probably going to get the part. YES. I like that choice.

Rachel McAdams is said to be locking down the lead role in season two of HBO’s “True Detective.” Sources tell Variety HBO has offered McAdams the part opposite Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn. Taylor Kitsch is also expected to land the role of the fourth lead.

Though HBO recently announced Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn as the shows leads, sources say it is the female lead that many believe will have a similar response to fans that Matthew McConaughey’s part as Rust Cohle had in season 1.

Several other actresses have been considered for the part, including Jessica Biel and Malin Ackerman, but McAdams has been seen as the frontrunner for the past few weeks. HBO could not immediately be reached for comment.

What it came down to was scheduling as insiders tell Variety McAdams was about to start filming “Spotlight,” the drama revolving around the Catholic Church sex scandal uncovered by the Boston Globe, and it was unknown whether dates could be worked out for McAdams to do this and “True Detective.” Sources now say that in the last 24 hours a deal was worked out where the actresses could do both projects.

McAdams and Kitsch are expected to play cops alongside Farrell, while Vaughn plays the crime boss whose empire is threatened when his partner is murdered.

I would love to know what happened with Lizzie Moss. Her schedule only recently picked up when she signed on to a Cate Blanchett film this week, so “scheduling” wouldn’t have been a problem. As for Rachel… I remember when people thought Rachel was going to be the next Julia Roberts. As in, a huge movie star who could do dramas, romances, comedies, whatever you wanted. And then something happened. I’m not sure what. Maybe bad advice, maybe bad choices, maybe bad people around her. But Rachel is not the movie star everyone thought she would be. So maybe going to True Detective would be the best career re-boot.

Yay..Rachel is a great choice. This is an interesting cast.

  2. Honeybea says:

Meh! i was hoping for elizabeth moss or ellen page

    • qwerty says:

Moss did Top of the lake already, it would be too predictable. Still she’d be better than the cute Notebook girl, anyone would be better really

  3. shannon says:

thank you, THANK YOU! I love Rachel and no, not because of the Notebook. I really hope this works out.

    • Lori says:

I think that the notebook is what slowed her career down. Or more her past relationship with Ryan Gosling. I find that fans of his seem to really “hate” his girlfriend and it does impact the work they get. Look at the hate getting slung at Eva Mendez.

  4. lucy2 says:

I too was hoping for Moss, but will be happy for Rachel if this turns out to be true. I like her, and hope this could be a great opportunity for her.
A little disappointed there is only 1 main female character though.

  5. Tiffany27 says:

So it’s going to be a show based in LA, but there are no POC in the cast? Alright then.

    • Lori says:

This is my thought too. GIven the geography of the story………why can’t there be some diversity in the casting. I was hoping for Rosario Dawson. Her name was thrown around for a little while. But all whites in the cast.

      • minime says:

I’m actually happy that Rachel McAdams is a contender for this role, ’cause I think she’s quite a good actress and I think it would be interesting to see her a play a role in this kind of genre…but, now that you said it, Rosario Dawson would be really great in these series!!! It is really a pity the lack of variety. It makes me also think about this Mexican actress, Stephanie Sigman, that appears in “The Bridge”. She is great in those series and I would really like to see her doing more stuff.

    • OhDear says:

And even if they are cast, they’ll probably be cast as the criminals.

      • qwerty says:

Actually the criminals &shady characters were white in the past season, and 2 cops were black. Not saying the all-white cast in this season sits well with me though

    • mia girl says:

You know what, as a Latina myself, I would have loved Rosario Dawson. That said, I also love McAdams and feel she can play a strong female character.

Frankly, I would like to see one of the MALE detectives reflect the diversity of LA. Often in casting, they make the female character also a person of color/ethnicty. Like killing two birds with one stone. How about they not cast Taylor Kitsch.

      • CK says:

Face it, mia. They are going to make Taylor Kitsch happen whether we want it to or not. I do wonder if the producers are going to field even half the questions about diversity that Mindy Kaling, Shonda Rhimes or heck even Lena Dunham has to deal with. I doubt it though.

  6. LK says:

I like Rachel. But i (embarrasingly) confess that i wanted Biel to get the part. It’d be interesting to watch. Now she would say she didn’t get the part because she’s too beautiful.

  7. Shijel says:

No. I’ve always found Rachel McAdams terribly unbelievable in her roles. The moment she’s on the screen my immersion dies. That may very well change in TD2, but there you go.

    • Tanguerita says:

absolutely agree. She is just not that talented an actress and (say what you want about Julia Roberts and her acting chops) doesn’t have half the charisma of Roberts. I actually hoped for Rosario Dawson. Now, that would have been an interesting choice.

    • pretty says:

well she was great in The Lucky Ones (2008). i really like that movie.

  8. Sarah says:

Love Rachel, also not because of The Notebook. Glad she took the role, she’s passed up some amazing films that would have made her career.

  9. Kate says:

I like Rachel but …there isn’t one person of color in this cast for a show set in an urban environment? Are you kidding me ? What happened to Rosario Dawson? Wasn’t she in the mix here?

  10. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I keep seeing posts about this show. Is it good?

  11. Jayna says:

Yes. The cast is shaping up to be really interesting.

  12. Cali says:

Forget Rachel (though I do love love her), let’s talk about the rumor that Taylor Kitsch might be joining her, too! #texasforever

I didn’t watch the first season of TD, but I just might have to get HBO back now. 😉

  13. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Ryan left the happily giggling Rachel for a more hearty throated Eva simply because he just couldn’t take those high pitched giggles while in the act of ‘playing gospel.’

  14. break says:

The three California detectives are being played by 2 beautiful Canadians and a hot Irishman!

  15. shayne says:

I’m glad they have managed to keep it all white. I was getting worried for a second they might hire Rosario Dawson *sarcasm*

  16. tracking says:

If she can do gritty rather than cute-sy, I think it’s a good choice. Agree with @shayne that the lack of diversity is disappointing though.

  17. ernie says:

Elizabeth Moss basically had her own True Detective arc in Top of the Lake. I wanted Brit Marling for this. Or Rosario.

    • minime says:

I like Elizabeth Moss and I agree, it would have most probably been a very repetitive role for her.
I’m not totally convinced by the casting till now, but I think Rachel McAdams might be interesting in this kind of role. I only saw Brit Marling in the East and she was not that impressive, but neither was the movie, so that might be the reason. I agree with others that it would be interesting to have more variety, and maybe some less know actors in the mix.

      • ernie says:

Yeah, I think Rachel will be fine. I’m more annoyed by the male leads.
See I thought Brit was very good in The East. But I also liked the movie.

  18. Steph says:

    Yay! Love her!

  19. sheryl_l says:

Yay for Rachel but nay for the male leads, not only because IMHO they’re not talented enough and lack of charm, but because there’s not race and sex diversity for a show settled in LA. Also: can we stop thinking that is a failure when actors won’t became huge movie stars Julia Roberts like? it’s statistically impossible because there’s only room for a few of that kind of global stars, but also not all of the actors aim for that kind of fame.

  20. Grant says:

There’s still time for Rachel to become the next Julia! She already has two iconic roles under her belt: Regina George and Allie from the Notebook. She’s so talented and beautiful, I believe it can happen.

  21. Dutch says:

This shaping up to be the second — and final — season of True Detective.

  22. kay says:

Julia really is the Meryl Streep of movie stars. She was and still probably holds the crown as the most famous and successful female movie star of all time.

No one has since become as famous and beloved for strictly a movie star. Including Angelina Jolie.

People lined up outside the theaters just because she was IN it. Got to give her credit. She played the Hollywood movie star sweetheart role unlike anyone. She’s a Hollywood icon and legend. People will always hope for the next “Julia”. I don’t think there will be a next Julia, Angelina, or Meryl. Times are different.

As much as I LOVE j law, those photos destroyed her Hollywood image. But maybe its better that way. Maybe being honest and yourself is a better route. Not condoning the theft of her property, I mean like, maybe images hurt stars now a days. Plus honesty is always best. Great virtue.

People can be seen one way, and become very successful with it, but they treat others very poorly in reality.

I like jlaw more now. I don’t judge her, she seems more normal. Taking selfies is what people do. I don’t think she will surpass Meryl though or reach her. Hollywood is really a fifteen minute thing now. You’re only a huge movie star for a moment. Remember Kristen and Rob?

Oscars don’t mean anything anymore. They’rejust an entertaintment show really and rarely is it about real talent. It doesn’t elevate careers anymore. In fact, it seems true opposite no?

    • Brittney B says:

No one I’ve talked to has even SEEN the stolen pictures, because it’s such an obvious violation and we intentionally avoided taking part in it. I really, really doubt that they will affect her career or her image at all. We still have a long way to go, but people like Angelina, Meryl and Julia helped to turn Hollywood into a place where women have more agency. The only people who see women differently because they’ve been violated are the people whose backwards opinions are quickly losing traction; they don’t make up the whole target demographic for the future of filmmaking.

  23. Marianne says:

Yes, I’m hoping this helps her with a “comeback” of sorts. She was really poised to be the next bog thing back around 2004-2007ish but then she kind of faded away.

  24. MAC says:

It does not matter who gets cast in it after they choose Vince V.

  25. venus velvet says:

I would’ve liked Carla Gugino, but am curious to see how McAdams does.

  26. sesame says:

I’m ambivalent with this choice. I like Rachel McAdams a lot as an individual, she’s a cutie-pie and seems well-loved by her peers. I was impressed with her range when she broke out around 2005-6 or so, but I find that her roles from 2008 onwards lack something exciting – she emotes “McAdams-ness” in many of her different characters. Imho, either Moss, Dawson or Marling would have been more daring choices. Or l someone even more left-field e.g. Andrea Riseborough.

  27. RSAKS says:

I honestly think Rachel didn’t became the next new big thing because she didn’t wanted it. She just took other kind of roles and moved back to Canada.

  28. Maria of MD says:

Can’t get excited about her. I was hoping for someone with more gravitas. All the potent actresses seem to have been snatched up by other series. American Horror Story comes to mind.
