Sam Smith loves ‘the idea of having a house, a kid, a husband, and a dog’

I’ve gone back and forth about covering Sam Smith’s interviews over the past three months or so. I really like him but… I don’t know, maybe I thought people wouldn’t be interested? Sam has gotten so much attention lately, for all the right reasons. He’s very talented, he has a beautiful voice and he lives a pretty normal life. You can tell he still gets star-struck and this whole celebrity thing is still pretty new to him. I also like and appreciate the fact that he was out as a gay man before he even made it, and he didn’t dive back into the closet as soon as fame came to him. I’ve read some stuff (mostly on Gawker) saying that Sam’s take-me-as-I-am/uncontroversial homosexuality is more conservative than it should be, mostly because Sam isn’t specifically singing/talking about being gay. Sam has said in the past that he strives to make his songs gender neutral, because he wants a broad audience to relate to his songs. Makes sense to me?

Anyway, Sam has a new interview with Teen Vogue that I enjoyed – you can read the full piece here. I think he manages to find an appropriate way of speaking to his teenage fans without being patronizing. He’s only 22 years old, you know. Some highlights:

Being himself: “Being yourself can be quite scary… Music is everything because it’s my way of expressing myself. I’m a highly emotional boy, but there are other things that I love. Like food. I love food more than life.”

Finding his voice: “The minute I started to tell a story, everything clicked into place. I became an artist because I had something to say and that’s why to me, even when people mention my voice on the record, I get quite shocked because when it comes to the singing, I can sing a lot more than what I did on the record. I held it back because I wanted the focus to be on the music and the songs and what I was saying.”

Wanting to be a professional singer: “I wanted this so badly that I was willing to completely sell myself to become a pop star because I was poor. No one was complimenting me anymore, so I started to lose my faith. I thought, I’m going to have to dress a certain way, lose weight, or sing a certain type of song. But the truth is, I was OK just as I was.”

He’s emotional: “I stand onstage and I wanna cry for the entire thing because people know my business. You all know me. You can read as many interviews as you want, but if you put on my record, I’m telling you, that is me. I fell in love with someone last year, and he didn’t love me back. I deleted him off of WhatsApp, and it felt like I’d just broken up with him. On the record you can hear heartbreak, and there’s a beauty in that I will always treasure.”

He loves Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, & Anna Wintour: “As a kid I collected Vogue every month for three years. My cross earrings are a mini statement; I wear them every day! My whole dream is to be iconic, and the way you dress yourself is so important.”

His life goals: “The idea of having a house, a kid, a husband, and a dog…I love that. I also really want to open a coffee and flower shop one day, probably in Italy.”

Being gay: “With the whole gay thing, I’ve had zero reaction, which says something beautiful about our generation and how things are getting a little bit better.”

[From Teen Vogue]

See? I don’t get why there’s this contrarian backlash against him at all. So he’s not a “political” gay man. Why does it matter? He loves to sing and write music and he’s not saying anything hurtful or intolerant. He just wants to sing. He actually reminds me of Adele. Beautiful-voiced British sweethearts wearing their hearts on their sleeves. Oh, and “I’m Not the Only One” is MY JAM.

He sounds totally normal to me; pretty well adjusted for a 22-year-old, really. No mention of keg stands and trying to make out where he left his underwear. I don’t recommend rushing the husband, dog bit, but get all the houses you want. Is that how kids break up these days? By deleting them off apps? I am so old. Get off my lawn!

I absolutely love him! “I’m Not The Only One” is one of my faves. I never knew he was gay, nor do I care. The “backlash” against him is foolish and unnecessary. Keep singing, Sam!

      • TTMuch says:

I didn’t know he was gay either, or white for that matter (I got a D’Angelo vibe that was toooottttaly wrong), just loved the song. Sing on! (Don’t get married yet)

He is so talented! I love his voice!

This kid is so talented and nice to boot. I get the trepidation about covering him on Celebitchy. I just want him to keep going and not let him get any shade. I just get the feeling he is a bit sensitive, and anything that would slow his art would piss me off too. I wish him his happy ending to, and I hope to see him in his coffee shop in Italy someday maybe he can give us an impromptu song too.

I love the bit about the coffee and flower shop in Italy …
Sounds like an adorable kid to me!

  6. PrincessMe says:

    LOVE HIM!

I can’t stop listening to “I’m not the only one” (my favorite song of his). That song has buried itself into my soul.

    Loveeeeeeeee him

  8. HH says:

I really like him! He just seems very sweet and good-natured.

Side note: Man… music videos. They don’t feel like they’re as big a deal as they used to be. I remember watching MTV and them announcing “world premieres.”

    • Kitten says:

This might have been before your time, but the most epic world premiere video was “Thriller.”

      • HH says:

It was before my time, but that video still scares me. When I watch it (or any of his videos) I can’t believe he was so ahead of his time.

    • Dash says:

It depends… They’re still a big deal of you’re 15 and on Twitter and invested in the whole “vevo record” thing. Otherwise no one really cares about them.

I think this is what being gay should look like though — just another facet of an otherwise ordinary, extraordinary life. When people can be out without fearing repercussion, of course it’s going to look apolitical. Most of us are just taking one day at a time, trying to get by.

And I appreciate that he wants a wide audience — just because he is gay doesn’t mean those of us who aren’t can’t relate and connect with him to stories of love and loss.

    Honk for Sam Smith!

  10. Jay says:

I love his music, but he sounds a bit whiney in interviews to me. Sorta woe is me and all my emotions in EVERY interview. And he’s only 22, which makes it seem a little much. Not saying young people can’t go through some tough things (I’m 23), but he seems to lay it on a little thick.

  11. Harryg says:

It just really irritates me how much Stay With Me sounds like the Tom Petty song Won’t Back Down. This has probably been discussed here already, sorry. But yeah, it irritates me. But I like Sam Smith and he probably wrote the same tune accidentally.

  12. Lucy says:

He totally reminds me of Adele as well! Nice interview. All he needs to do now is stay away from Katy Perry.

  13. GlimmerBunny says:

I love the video for “I’m not the only one”! Dianna Agron is so gorgeous (my girlcrush!) and the song is very beautiful and emotional.

  14. ashley says:

His voice is everything! I wish him all the best,i love his album. I love that guy in the music video,he’s hilarious on the mindy project.

  15. Addison DeWitt says:

I dislike when someone states that they like ‘the idea’ of having a spouse, kid, etc. It seems like a dangerous mindset to enter into a marriage; would they be marrying because someone fit the role? Hopefully I’m being over sensitive about this statement.

  16. Jennifer says:

That was painful on the ears. Yikes!

  17. Fatty Magoo says:

I cannot stand his music. His voice grates my ears! I know I’m in the minority but I needed to get that of my chest lol
