Benedict Cumberbatch talks equality, marriage, babies & ‘trysts’ with Elle UK

bendy5

This is full-on Cumberp0rn. Elle UK is our supplier, our dealer, our enabler of all of our Cumberfixes. I showed everyone the Elle UK special cover featuring Benedict Cumberbatch weeks ago, but Elle UK has finally released more of their editorial, plus some quotes, plus TWO videos. I can’t even describe how beautiful Benedict looks in this editorial. And the videos take the hotness to the next-level. HIS HAIR IS SO GOOD. His skin looks great too. And whoever styled him knows what they’re doing – I would even suggest to Cumby that he should hire this stylist full time for his Oscar campaign. First, here are some interview highlights:

We spent the day with Benedict, 38, rambling around Hampstead Heath, riding his motorbike (a little recklessly) through London, and drinking cocktails at the Chiltern Firehouse. And we talked to him about everything: his work, his childhood, his friendships, his family, love life, Sherlock (of course) and babies. We’ve had better days at work. We just can’t think of them right now.

On his next film The Imitation Game, in which he plays WW2 code-breaker and founder of modern computer science Alan Turing, he says: “It [genius] is a very rich canvas to work with as an actor. Turing is so different to Sherlock. There’s a real subtlety about him; his flourishes aren’t flamboyant, he doesn’t think of himself that highly.”

On his love life, he is sweetly candid. “It’s a really double-edged sword,” he says, about dating post-Sherlock fame. “You know, you discover why people find you attractive – in a relationship or a tryst – and if it’s just to have a go on you or try you out, then I can smell that a mile off.”

It hasn’t made him cynical though. He is most definitely looking for the fairytale: “I hope I’m looking back and going: ‘Oh, that was the moment I got on with life and realised things beyond myself.’ Without using words like ‘marriage’ ‘children’ and ‘family’ – although I have just used those words – put it this way: I hope I’ve got other people to look back with me at that point. I hope I’m surrounded by family.” He’s a feminist too, you know.

[From Elle UK]

Of course he uses a word like “tryst” to describe some sexy one-night-stands or flings. Sigh… a tryst with Bendy. Lovely. As for the “fairytale” of real love, otter-style… he’s actually learned to speak in more opaque terms. I remember a time when he would just come right out and say “I want to married, I want kids, hopefully soon.” He’s changed a bit there. But he still made my heart flutter. You can see more of Elle UK’s package here.

This is my new favorite video – it’s Benedict looking gorgeous and playing a word-association game with Elle. Otter? “Me.” Hiddleston? “Tom.”

And this is the behind-the-scenes video of his photoshoot. This is just straight-up Cumberp0rn.

LOVE THE FEMINISM, CUMBER.

Is this guy all of a sudden the only male celebrity out there? Why is his face everywhere? I don’t understand …

    • Francesca says:

I am eager for this phase to pass. I find his face supremely unatttractive.

      • Karen says:

I did too, at first. Now, I can’t get enough after watching Sherlock and him on Graham Norton. The U2 photobomb at the Oscars was pretty hilarious too. He’s my fantasy lover.

      • Anne tommy says:

Harsh Francesca. He’s everywhere so it would be quite nice to like his looks but I’ve obviously been born without the Benny appreciation gene. I do like otters though.

      • icerose says:

Not so much unattractive as bland and over publicised but all bubbles burst once the novelty wears off.

  2. jumbotron says:

HIs interviews are lovely but I am SO over him. He isn’t even at the peak of his Oscar campaign and I’m already sick of his face. CB – I wish ya’ll covered a variety of male celebrities regularly! Not just this guy. Enough already! 🙂

    • JJ says:

      ^^^^ YEP ^^^^

I never gotten his appeal, he creeps me out actually.

    • AG-UK says:

hehehehe. I live in the UK and they cover him more in the US than here it seems. He is great but yes I think I am sort of over it. He makes me laugh with his go to pose, hands running thru hair.

    • Etheldreda says:

I agree. Other than one hit TV series, his CV isn’t actually that impressive for an actor not far off 4O. Yet he’s everywhere at the moment. I know he has a film to promote, but still, it’s getting a bit much.

      • Linn says:

Counting his whole life his CV isn’t that impressive counting only how far he has come since he was cast as Holmes or in Atonement it probably is.

      • GeeMoney says:

I like to think that it’s IMPRESSIVE that he doesn’t have an “Encino Man” type movie on his resume… geez, you people that don’t like him are awful.

      • 'P'enny says:

Only one hit TV series? depends on what you watch really?

He is rapidly getting a big chest of silver trophies if you think of the awards he has won, the only one missing is the Oscar.

Benny has a huge theatre reputation and been a very strong supporting actor, his lead roles in films are now starting to roll in.

      • Etheldreda says:

”Don’t like him?” I don’t know him, how can I like or dislike him?

Actually, I admire him as an actor, but all I’m saying is that given the amount we’re hearing about him right now – and believe me, this side of the Atlantic it’s non-stop at the moment – you’d think he was some multi-Oscar winning superstar, In reality, he’s had one hit TV series, a few good supporting roles in hit films, and not much else thus far. It remains to be seen how successful TIG will be. That’s fine, but the amount of hype he’s getting right now is a bit disproportionate to his achievements imho.

      • MissMary says:

He has a pretty solid history with no ‘throw away’ roles i can find on his CV, and a strong theatre history… I’m not sure what people are looking for in his work history but I’m not seeing a long, dry desert of fail or anything.

      • Sam says:

I don’t care if people don’t like him for whatever reason, but to say that his CV isn’t that impressive when he was in a film that just won best picture oscar sounds incredibly ignorant. His CV over the last few years has been very diverse and he has worked with some of the best actors working today. His trajectory in the last couple of years has been very impressive.

      • Andrea says:

Fassbender’s CV isn’t that impressive for his age either but I have loved nearly everything BC and Fassbender have been in over the past few years.

      • Green Girl says:

I’m with Sam on this. BC may have just become a “name” in the last few years, but he’s been working almost consistently since he graduated from college. While you might not like his work – and that’s completely fine! – it’s weird to me to think his entire CV isn’t “impressive.” He has so many awards and accolades for acting, and his colleagues all seem to sing his praises. He must be doing something right.

The thing about acting is that working gets you more work, too. So you take a role that maybe isn’t what you want to do, but you do it to a) continue networking (Starter for 10 put him in touch with Mark Gatiss, for example), and b) continue working. Employers of all types don’t like to see big gaps on CVs.

      • Intro Outro says:

I see what @Etheldreda is saying though. Ben has been consistently delivering solid performances and has been a part of many critically acclaimed and well-known films, but he has yet to open a potential big screen blockbuster.

      • icerose says:

@P’enny no Oscar no Bafta film award ,no Cannes award and he shared his Oivier award . He has one an Emmy and Baftas for TV and a BFI film award for supporting actor which I actually feel was a bit dubious considering all the performances in Tinker Tailor were incredible. So it is not that outstanding and he is forty so quite late to be hitting the leading roles in films.
He has only had two leading roles in films and one was the biggest bomb of last year,
Still with a bit of luck by the time he is Seventy he might catch up with McKellan,Daniel Day Lewis and Derek Jacobi who won a Tony and a Bafta as Turing

      • Freebunny says:

As long as Tommy can catch up with McKellan DDL and Jacobi you should be allright Icerose….

    • maria says:

is he really that famous or is just here on CB? I rarely see anything about him any where else.

      • Etheldreda says:

I think the attention he gets on CB and other celeb sites is way out of proportion to his fame in the ‘real world’. For most people, he’s just that funny looking dude from ‘Sherlock’. But right now, especially here in the UK and Ireland, he’s all over the place. Maybe it’s just to do with promoting ‘The Imitation Game’ but it’s starting to feel a bit OTT.

      • MissMary says:

He gets a lot of kudos and admiration from fellow actors but he is not “Brad Pitt” famous for the most part. He has a dedicated fan base, and people who aren’t “fans” but enjoy his work, and then the professional circles who think he’s awesome.

      • maria says:

Yeah ok. I think the amount of posts here is odd. That’s why I asked 🙂 He’s a great actor and seems to be a sweet guy but people seem to be a bit uhm… possessive and take things personally when someone aren’t on board the Benisthebest train.

I watched Stuart, a life backwards yesterday. Terrible story but my god is Ben and Tom Hardy great together! I laughed out loud several times. Mostly because of Tom. And now I feel ashamed since Stuart had a life no one should have to endure.

  3. maybeiamcrazy says:

British celebrities seem to have a better grasp about what feminism is about. I wonder why that is… I am not even a Cumberbitch but he looks hot in this pictures.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •maybeiamcrazy•

My guess it’s not demonised as it is here in the US. Or a better education system??? I dunno they are just guesses…

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

@Ladyslippers I don’t know, maybe. I am not from USA or UK, it is just something i observed while reading this blog so i may be wrong.

@GNAT I don’t know about Benny Hill other than that he is a comedian.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Maybe, I’m just teasing you. He’s probably before your time, but was very sexist and for a long time Americans thought he represented “British humor.” It was a dumb joke on my part. Sorry.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

GNAT Now i get it :). I was not trying to generalise, i am sure British people have their fair share of sexist celebs. Just that they(at least that are covered on this site) seem to know what the word means.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Benny Hill.

    • uninspired username says:

From what he’s said publicly, I don’t think he has that great a grasp of it. But I appreciate the effort, I guess.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •uninspired username•

I’d disagree with you as he typically has a very good grasp on topics he discusses. Which interview or interviews gave you that impression?

      • Nic says:

What has he said that’d indicate he doesn’t understand feminism? Feminism is equality and he’s always enforced that.

  4. MissMary says:

Pretty much the same things he’s said in past interviews, repackaged. There’s not going to be a “big reveal” like some folks were panting for (duh) but the addition of some very nice pics and video make it better, lol.

  5. Kay says:

I’m inexplicably mesmerized by the veins on his forearms… What is this witchcraft, Cumby?!

  6. JKL says:

    Blargh.

  7. PunkyMomma says:

    That first pic – swoon.

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

My lust and crush just transformed into a deep and abiding love.

  9. Nic says:

Yes he’s everywhere and I’m loving every minute of it.

    • An says:

Yeah, I like hustle. Hopefully he’ll get more well known in the US. He’s only ‘overexposed’ to the small percentage of people in social media pockets, he’s really still not super visible here.

      • MissMary says:

Most of the folks I know have no idea who he is other than “oh, he was in x movie”–he’s really not all over the place here stateside. His name DOES come up on some random shows, but it’s mainly those with “geeky/cultish” followings (At Midnight, he’s sometimes mentioned, and on I think Parks and Rec or one of those similar shows). Usually shows with folks who will know who he is due to Sherlock or being Trekkies. I rarely see him in magazines (I actually don’t think I have) and he’s not on any covers here, and not in he daily news unless it’s a gossip site like this one, or it’s a “big story” like the Doctor strange casting.

      • MountainRunner says:

Agreed. I almost never see him in the celebrity mags here, but if it’s internet-based, he seems ubiquitous. I’m curious if his coverage in the US mags will increase as he takes on more lead roles in the coming year or two or if he’ll remain more of an internet sensation celebrity-wise. Ultimately, if he has the interest of the directors who can keep giving him good roles, that’s what will matter for longevity, not the number of Tumblr pages devoted to him.

    • delorb says:

      +1

I nearly fell over at the ‘tryst’ comment. The word associate of ‘otter’ to ‘me’ was just too cute. I hate the otters and wish they’d all go away, to be sure, but I liked that ‘me’.

  10. LadySlippers says:

    •Kaiser•

‘You can see more of Elle’s UK package here’. Fruedian slip there Kaiser?!??? 😜

And I just saw Frankenstein in the cinema last night with Benedict as the Creature (fellow Americans it’s being shown again all across the country). Wow. Also the cinema accidentally started the film with Jonny as the Creature and then restarted it with Benedict and contrast between how they filmed the two men were quite striking. Clearly the camera and film crew had been Batched. Lol

    • sigh((s)) says:

I saw it too! I did not, however, get the JLM sneak peek. I can’t go see the other one, though. Boo.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •sigh((s))•

What did you think? I now want to read the book as I was very impressed! The acting and writing were fantastic. But Benedict’s portrayal was a bit sexual as compared to Jonny. Lol. Or it was the camera doing it.

      • sigh((s)) says:

I thought he was going to start humping the grass at one point. 🙂
I liked it. The set was amazeballs. I’d have never thought to fly in decking. I thought, save for the blind man, the rest of the cast was meh. I hated the father. He was terrible.
JLM was great. My minor annoyance with him was the incessant hand shaking. BC was good, nice physicality, although I saw some (very small) inconsistencies. I also wasn’t quite believing the transition to rage and revenge with him. However, it did make for a very sympathetic creature. Maybe JLM did a better job with that? Or it was more a directorial choice.
        Your thoughts?

      • Nic says:

        @ladyslippers

It may have seemed more sexual but I think that’s because he was just less aggressive and gentler than JLM. Even the rape scene was less brutal.

..but I can’t deny finding it sexual for my own reasons. 😉

    • icerose says:

well they both one the Olivier so obviously the panel could not decide which one was better .I saw both back to back and although both were brilliant my preference was for Miller-but I saw him as the monster first and he won my heart straight off so Benny coming second had to be pretty exceptional to improve on him

  11. Sara says:

Anne Hathaway has found her Oscar Campaign match. Go away Benedict, its October ffs and you are already getting on peoples nevers with your overexposure.

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

LOL! So true. I love the guy but if he keeps popping up everywhere like this i don’t know what i’ll think. But he won’t get a backlash, he is a man. Poor AnnE.

    • Lindy79 says:

Oh come on, its not the same at all. What annoyed most about AnnE’s campaign was that false modesty and the breathless little girl voice in interviews and speeches. That and pointing out they spelled her name wrong while she was up on stage accepting an award, and the constant talking about losing weight for a role like she was the only actor to have ever done that, cutting her hair and the fact she sang live.

Not saying he’s not going to get over exposed but it’s not nearly the same, until he starts breathlessly going “it came truuuuuuuue” while doing Diana eyes through his fringe then it’s not comparable.

    • Anne tommy says:

I think I will “ship” Anne and Benny, “Cumberway” or “Hathabatch” has quite a ring to it…

  12. Green Eyes says:

He appears to be getting more handsome as he ages – he looks positively gorgeous in these photos. And I’m not even his biggest fan!

I also agree with those above – there is nothing in this particular interview that we haven’t heard so far. Same ol’ same ol’.

  13. Really says:

    Good God, enough of him!

    • Anne tommy says:

Sorry, random thought which may get edited out, just heard an advert with David Morrisey narrating, now there’s a “brithunk” ( sorry, am old Enough to know better…) who looks nothing like an otter and is all the better for it

  14. Darkladi says:

So…I never got the Cumberbatch fascination. But I watched the video & I think I may be infected

  15. Kim1 says:

I feel like I am being “punked”. There is nothing I find attractive about this guy.He is like Channing Tatum but at least Channing has an attractive body.

  16. MissMary says:

The “secret project” he was doing for the Beeb is “revealed” it seems: a trailer for their drama shows where he is doing the voiceover of the “All the world’s a stage” speech whilst clips from the dramas are shown.

    • sigh((s)) says:

      What a lame secret. 😉

      • MissMary says:

IKR? Unless they come out with “OH HEY LOOK! He also filmed something new and awesome!” I’m calling this a thirsty promo from the Beeb.

    • Felice says:

Underwhelming lol. I still don’t believe Doctor Strange until Marvel or he actually says something. Sick and tired of whiny marvel tumblr right now.

      • MissMary says:

Anyone Marvel chooses is going to bring out the whingey fans over the choice… I tend to avoid marvel fan sites because of that lol.

      • Felice says:

It’s not even that. It’s just now just “lizard oatmeal alien” comments and those honestly hurt me because tumblr tries to be all “we are all people” and then when B is involved, all bets are off.

      • gg says:

I didn’t even want him to do Doctor Strange, but I’ve changed my mind just because it will piss off the MCU fanboys and the SJW contingent of Tumblr, who insist that Strange was Latino or Asian based on evidence they pulled out of their asses.

      • Felice says:

He’s a German inherited WASP from Greenwich

    • 'P'enny says:

      is that it?

      why the secret?

I was hoping for Benedict and Capaldi face-off for Children in Need. I need to sort out the BBC!

      • MissMary says:

Now that you’ve said that, I’m going to harbor a secret hope we get something like that for Children in Need… Maybe an eyebrow-raising contest where the two of them make the most intimidating eyebrow-based scowls and see who wins? (I kid, but the two of them together would be awesome).

  17. betsy says:

The negative ninnies on here are hilarious. Bless you you’ll all have to get used to him. He isn’t going away any time soon. Expect him to muscle in alongside Robert Downey Jr and take a big role in the marvel universe.

  18. 'P'enny says:

Okay, I have to say something, I think Benedict is going into PR overdrive. I’ve said all along, here and elsewhere, by the way, at the that beginning of the year that he would be Dr Strange. I think I made a threat about eating my hat. Anyway, despite the Joaquin wobble.

I think this has been in the bag for a while and it is no coincidence that Marvel are going to release the news, just in time for US release of TIG. It’s just too obvious [to me] especially when he is wrapped in the Hollow Crown filming at the moment.

So, as a h-bomber, I am dead pleased for him – please note Benny super-fans. I am happy for this news! yeah. Look a H-fan happy for Benedict.

Finally, I am going to tell Benedict off… no more Elle articles please, this one is as bad as Hiddles one last year! sentimental pulp! I don’t think I am every going to fall for another Elle article promotion again.

    • sigh((s)) says:

      Lol. Down with Elle!

    • Felice says:

I don’t think there will be any awkward 10 year old snog stories. He does not do turtlenecks well though lol

    • MissMary says:

Elle, bless their hearts (and I say that as a Southerner so some of y’all will know what that means, lol) is big on the breathless, click-baity type headlines that are basically covering Tiger Beat articles with more expensive clothing in the pictures.

    • Green Girl says:

I wonder if he’ll get Dr. Strange, too. I am thinking he will, but then again, everyone was soooo certain during Comic Con this summer, so who really knows? I am not even a comics fan and I’m getting caught up in it all.

      • MissMary says:

I’m thinking, since it was announced he’s in final discussions for the role, it’s pretty much a done deal and it was announced to either “force his hand” to sit or get off the pot, or because it’s so close, it may as well be inked.

      • gg says:

It was announced during the live blog that the release date has been pushed back to November 2016 but no casting announcement yet

      • MissMary says:

Well, LCoz’s IMDB page has gone from “pre-production” back to “development” so maybe he’s got the time now.

      • Green Girl says:

Oh, wow. I wonder what he’ll get for this role? He could buy a million blue shirts now!

      • Nic says:

I think the change in dr strange scheduling in the last day is pretty much conf that he’s doing it.

    • icerose says:

do think Elle made both of them look pretty good but as for giving us insights even with Tom downing multiple drinks they could not come up with anything we do not know.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Elle is a fashion magazine. The only insights it will ever offer is what shoes its editors think should be worn with which dress. The interviews are done months in advance of publication so they can never contain an announcement of anything new.

  19. GeeMoney says:

Ugh… the thought of him having a “tryst” with anyone else but me makes me stabby. Ha ha ha!

    • gg says:

Yeah but if he is still having “trysts” then that means he is not flying off to Scotland to ask for a certain someone’s hand in marriage, so that is all for the good! (And maybe we still have a chance LOL)

      • GeeMoney says:

        LOL… fingers crossed!

      • Nic says:

I can’t believe the daily mail ran that story. Even for them it was embarrassing. I mean, who on earth would believe that?

      • MissMary says:

Well, the Brampton Guardian is still saying he and SH are definitely together (not that it’s a huge paper but yeah) so the story isn’t going to go away any time soon, and the Fail has what they want and lots of clicks back to their site from being trying to find out more… Someone on tumblr pointed out that *that* story came from the Fail’s web edition and the web edition is considered even more of a joke than the print edition, but it still doesn’t stop that from getting legs.

      • Nic says:

Lol what on earth is the Brampton guardian!?

Oh gosh yeah. It was the most embarrassingly stupid click bait story but lots of people are embarrassingly stupid and will literally believe anything. It’s a worry indeed.

      • Felice says:

I don’t think someone who calls girls “*eyebrow smirk* nice” is clearly settling down.

      • gg says:

FWIW, there’s been another tease of the Elle interview in the Irish Mirror. In it they say “Benedict – who was shot by photographer Mark Horn for ELLE UK – is currently in a relationship with Sophie Hunter but he admits the dating game has become more complicated since he became famous.” It is unclear to me whether it is the Irish Mirror or Elle who is saying that but haven’t most of the other reports used weasly words like “reported” or “alleged”? Otherwise, I totally agree with Felice. This is all so odd!
        http://www.irishmirror.ie/showbiz/celebrity-news/benedict-cumberbatch-says-sherlock-holmes-4523732

      • Felice says:

I think they didn’t put those words because it’s been reported so many times that they must see it as fact. That’s a weird sentence. It’s like saying that you’re not a cake person while taking a huge bite.

      • MissMary says:

It’s not the Irish Mirror saying it, but the Brampton Guardian (which is not a big paper). Irish mirror just reprinted it. Brampton guardian seems like a local city paper (like Houston Chronicle or New Orleans Times-Picayune level of local). If you read *any other* article about his Elle interiew that isn’t a repost from Brampton, the “in a relationship with Sophie Hunter” is missing. It’s lazy journalism, looks like, just googling info about the guy and doing a summary of the article mixed together. DIgital Spy, HuffPo, etc don’t mention it, and while they are definitely tabloidy, the fact it’s not even a blip is telling.

      • Nic says:

That’s ridiculous because it makes no sense next to the paragraph which clearly says that he hopes for the future. Also the elle snippet also added ‘he’s not cynical and he’s looking for the fairytale’. Just the mirror..they’re the ones with all that ‘mystery solved’ bs in the first place which was borrowed of a cray twitterer.

      • MissMary says:

Maybe it’s my own projection based on personal experiences, but I’m getting the vibe his comment on family doesn’t mean the white picket fence “dream.” His phrasing came off more like he wants a chosen family around him and it’s not necessarily wife/babies/fairy tale love life. IDK, lol, I read that and was like “Oh, sounds familiar” lol as I have a wide “chosen family”. BUT who knows. It was lazy journalism (using the term loosely for this story lol) that inserted the speculation in the Elle “recap”. I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of flail and disappointment when people get the mag and that’s not in there (because, really, if he HAD said anything, it would have leaked by now, either on purpose with a breathless “He reveals his lady-love!” type headline or as a sneaky attempt to get even more clicks on the 30th when it goes live).

      • Encumbered says:

@ MissMary I have long believed BC to be someone who could love and live somewhat unconventionally–whatever that might mean.

      • MissMary says:

Encumbered: Same here, lol. I often thought he’d end up in a non-mainstream situation, whether that’s a poly thing or just not marrying and having a partner, or even just a chosen family and no life partner as such.

      • GeeMoney says:

I read his comment to say: “When I finally met my wife, that’s the point in time where I realized that everything wasn’t about me and my career anymore and it then became about my life with her and our future kids.”

He was being very vague in his wording (probably to avoid crazy backlash), but I think that’s what he meant. I honestly think that he wants white picket fence fairy tale life with the wife and kids running around in the yard.

I think if he plays his cards right, he might end up getting it, too.

    • Green Eyes says:

Even if he and SH are dating (and everything is speculation as of now), I doubt it will last. With so much travel coming up for promotion, as well as for film projects, I only give this “relationship” a few months, max. Isn’t that what happened with Anna James? They dated for under a year and then when he was away from London for yonks due to his filming schedule their relationship just fizzled out.

And as much as I love the Batch and he’s been my internet crush for some time now, I can’t help but think that being in an actual relationship with him might be quite difficult for any woman – no matter how intelligent, independent and mature she may be. Me thinks that a little bit of the Batch can go a long way sometimes…

      • MissMary says:

With Anna James, they dated the summer before Venice Film Fest, he took her to that, took her to a bunch of high profile parties and events and was seen with her often on just regular dates (theatre, dinner, etc) and she was on set to see him once or twice, then when he went to film STiD, he was spotted with Lydia Hearst and the “announcement” that he and Anna James had split “some time back” was made before people could get their internet knickers in a bunch and say he was cheating, etc. Maybe he likes a steady when he has “down time” between projects, lol. Yeah I think he wouldn’t be a good LTR partner because he’s so into his work, which is fine so long as he’s honest about it (and given how he’s talked about being a workaholic many times before, he seems to be pretty open about his work’s place in his list of priorities).

      • GeeMoney says:

Ah, Cumby in love… so many things are possible.

Yep, he’s a workaholic… but that can all change meeting the right woman. My mother said to me once “You never know what’ll you do/how you’ll change when you meet the right person.” I guess we’ll see what happens.

And didn’t Cumby’s sister imply that he needed a smart gf? I got the impression that Anna didn’t fit the bill. Maybe that’s why the relationship didn’t last.

PS – And Sophie… not his gf. Just a friend. I’m calling it.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

        That!!You guys are my Gods!!I love you…truly I do!!
Long said, and been told I was in denial, that BC and Lady Stickupherarse didn’t seem ‘together’!

      • MissMary says:

@Kazlock: You are not alone lol.

  20. Zazie says:

They sell films with him, newspapers, dog food, insurances, cars, and now Elle. One day he is all used up and then they´ll have someone else. No matter what he says, how good an actor he is, how charming he smiles. I almost can see the whole thing fall over.

    • Havana says:

You totally can see the whole thing falling over since many people are already getting sick of him.

  21. TJ says:

If no one minds I’ll be taking Mr. Cumberbatch and a few of his fellow European actors to my estate for an extended period. You may have heard of it, Pemberley. So unfortunate It’s too late in the year for a picnic and swimming party by the lake but we can always have tea inside and other *indoor sports*.

Do you think you can get away with it because it appears as if all the ladies from Thornfield and The Garden aren’t here?!????

      I don’t think so missy!

      😉

  22. blended says:

this was done before TIFF right? you can see he is in good spirits. i know i keep harping on and on about this, but his change in mood is so obvious.

anyway, the haters can hate away (or go read another site) because he’s gonna be around for a while. i can’t get enough of him!

    • MissMary says:

IIRC, it was right before TIFF. Definitely before LFF.

      • blended says:

he did an interview at TIFF where the interviewer tried to play one of those quick ‘either/or’ game with him (eg, lennon or mccartney), and ben got very annoyed. he called it ‘reductive bullshit.’ you could hear the interviewer explain that he was asking everyone those questions, almost sheepishly. i just remembered it while watching the word association thing in the Elle vid, where he seems more than happy to play along. i get that he was tired from a long day of press, but it was a bit rude of ben.

      • Nic says:

End of aug I think this happened?

      • MissMary says:

@Blended: there’s been a few times where he’s openly snapped at interviewers and it wasn’t a “ha ha just kidding” or ‘recoverable’ situation (not that I think he’d want it to be ‘recovered’ but it wasn’t something easily dismissed as being misquoted or something). I don’t know the man but it seems like since the film fest in Poland he’s gotten a bit snippier/more tired with press (I keep thinking of that bit where he and Adam et al are on the waterway tour thing and he’s sighing and rolling his eyes, giving a half-ass thumbs up like ‘whatever’ to the camera person… I don’t think he’d been that openly ‘meh whatever’ to media before then).

      • Green Girl says:

I think he’s gotten snippier, too. I feel for both sides in this. How many times can you be asked the same questions over and over before it just becomes irritating? And on the other hand, the journalists were probably told “Make sure to ask about these specific topics.”

Everyone has their bad days, sure, but there’s a difference between being aloof and polite vs. outright snippy.

      • Nic says:

But he hasn’t really got grounds to be snippy though. He can’t be surprised to be answering repetitive qs from a journo at a press junket, that’s what those things are and that’s part of his job. Unless the journo is being overly intrusive, rude, OT whatever, he should just smile and answer the question. People have to do a lot worse to earn a living.

  23. Ellen says:

I know I’m going to get my head bitten off but I don’t think wearing a tee with “I’m a feminist” or tweeting #heforshe makes him or suchlike a feminist. It’s much more complex and it would be different if he said a few times and not while its been in the media he was reading an article about feminism and found it inspiring etc.

Elle magazine is the least feminist magazine anyway Espicially the way they conduct themselves in interviews with male celebrities.

    • An says:

It’s actually for the Fawcett Society. They’re not thrilled with Elle either but they need the $$ from the shirt sales:

      http://www.fawcettsociety.org.uk/blog/story-t-shirt/

The slogan isn’t ‘I’m the best feminist’ but that feminist isn’t a filthy word. It’s been around for years. It’s just a shame a lot of people were leaving off the charity info and link.

  24. allheavens says:

I don’t understand all the grousing about Cumberbatch being EVERYWHERE. Outside the Internet he is barely a blip compared to a host of other actors, especially in the US.

He has a very intense fan base but just how many people could that include? I am not talking about the people you simply watch “Sherlock” but the hard-core fans. Guessiment: 1 million worldwide. There are 7.1 billion people on the planet and most of them never heard of Benedict Cumberbatch. They have somehow managed to never see a TV show, a movie, and a play, hear a radio show, or read a magazine he’s in.

I could go up to 20 people here in the states and ask, “Who is Benedict Cumberbatch?” and I would get a blank stare from at least 16.

If people are sick of him, don’t Google him, don’t peruse his CV, and don’t click the Cumberbatch links at this site. If I hadn’t been an avid PBS watcher all of my life or hadn’t stumbled upon this site I wouldn’t know Cumberbatch existed.

    Damn, it ain’t hard people.

    • Janet says:

Yep. There are lots of stories I don’t click on. But this guy………every time! I like his looks, love what I have seen of his acting, and adore what I have seen of his personality.

    • Maggie says:

      @ Allheavens

I wish there was a LIKE button.

Most people I know haven’t a clue who he is and it is easy to ignore links on here. I very rarely click on anything beyond Benedict and certainly don’t click on someone I don’t like just to say I don’t like them.

      • allheavens says:

        @Maggie

I call these people “evangelical stans”.

They preach the gospel of their favorite and deride the direct competition to their favorite. All the while thinking it will sway others and start a movement that will sweep the competition away and leave a clear path for the ascension of their chosen one.

        Ridiculous isn’t it?

    • An says:

–allheavens: Never thought of that. I did wonder why some of them are just as obsessive as his more annoying fans, but with negative goals, and I honestly had no idea until you just said that.

It’s funny, one of those media recognition tracking companies gave him visibility rating of 10 not too long ago. I can’t remember all the details, but it basically meant only 1/10 people polled in the US could recognize him.

    • Intro Outro says:

I’m a huge film fan and I read lots of film-related sites including discussions in comments and follow various film critics and resources like Tracking Board, Deadline, AV Club, EW, Collider’s Steven Weintraub, Indiewire, Twitch et al et al on Twitter. Within this circle, Cumberbatch is pretty much everywhere. I think that anyone who is an avid film viewer and who follows industry news is getting quite an overdose of Cumberbatch without actively seeking any info on him.

      • allheavens says:

Most of the general populace don’t give a shit about industry news.

The Internet is interactive so unless your browser has been infected with a virus that redirects it to news about Cumberbatch you are actively going to these sites which means you are going to see more about Cumberbatch than the average person. Perception, folks, perception.

The sites you mentioned don’t post daily about Cumberbatch and if an article is on their landing page all you have to do is move on. This site is probably the only one where there is an almost daily post about Cumberbatch and that’s their perogative, it’s their site.

As for Twiiter I only do politics, period. If you follow gossip sites or industry news you still have to actively click the tweet, links or photos.

So if you are getting an overdose of Cumberbatch it is on you not the industry.

I’ve managed to get through life, still obtain information about what’s been green-lighted, whose been cast, what’s in production, post-production without being bombarded by Cumberbatch news unless I want to be bombarded.

        That’s my take.

      • Intro Outro says:

@allheavens: in your above comment you write: “Outside the Internet he is barely a blip compared to a host of other actors, especially in the US […] If people are sick of him, don’t Google him, don’t peruse his CV, and don’t click the Cumberbatch links at this site”. I have given you examples of how someone who loves cinema can get an overdose of Cumberbatch without googling him or his CV or clicking links. I was not trying to negate your original statement that he’s still mostly Internet-famous and talked about immeasurably less than many other celebrities.

Also, a person can get a feeling that an actor’s name is everywhere just from seeing said name constantly appear in news sections and headlines on sites and in tweets WITHOUT clicking the links, you know?

  25. Felice says:

So according to tumblr, someone took his wax ear lol

  26. Tippet says:

All I know is only this motherf***er can say “mewling, puking” and make it sound sexy

  27. Breezy says:

Man, a lot of you guys seem to confuse “well known” for “skilled actor”. If you sift though hollywood there’s a ton of very skilled people that just aren’t the face of hollywood. That doesn’t mean they’re not skilled or don’t deserve their moments. Sadly most still won’t get them. It’ll be another Depp movie or something (btw a lot of faves don’t actually have much good work under their belts).

I’m sure the regulars have already spoken about his career and skill level so I won’t bother going more into this. It’s just, do you have to want to date someone for them to be relevant?

As far as Elle, I love the feminist photo. It’s on my phone now. I don’t do that sort of thing but it makes me really happy.

Edit: why do people get so invested in how nice they think he is? Like, why do people expect him to talk like Tom? If not he’s rude or something? Where did that come from? He’s always been pretty blunt about just being a normal dude.
