Jared Leto may play The Joker in a ‘Suicide Squad’ movie: good pick?

Jared Leto

You’re looking a a photo of Jared Leto, Oscar winner, unabashedly wearing a pink fanny pack on the streets of NYC. Jared isn’t known for his fashion sense, but a fanny pack is a new hipster low. He’s also carrying the blasted thing around in his hand in some other pics that I’ve included. Why doesn’t he just use a wallet or a man bag? Anything but a fanny pack. He looks like a Disney tourist.

Where was I? Right. Jared Leto as an actor. Since he won the Academy Award for Dallas Buyers Club, I’ve been interested to see what Jared would pick for his next project. He’s been doing the rock star thing and biding his time. New rumors are circulating that Jared is considering a role as The Joker in Warner Bros’ Suicide Squad film. I know many of you are tired of comic book movies, but this would be a gathering of supervillains! At least it’s a new spin on dudes and dudettes in costume:

Jared Leto, who won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club, has not officially signed on to his next project, but there’s a chance it could be a big superhero film.

The actor may be under consideration for the role of the Joker in the Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment project Suicide Squad, sources confirm to THR.

David Ayer is attached to direct the project. The Suicide Squad team, also known as Task Force X, was created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru and first appeared in Brave and the Bold No. 25. Its most recent iteration includes characters Deadshot, King Shark, Captain Boomerang and Harley Quinn.

The DC property about convicted supervillains who are given a chance to redeem themselves through dangerous missions has been in the works for some time at Warner Bros., but it has really picked up steam in the past few months. The film is slated for release on Aug. 5, 2016.

After the Oscars, Leto spent time focusing on his music as the lead singer of Thirty Seconds to Mars while he looked for his next project. His name has come up in connection with Marvel’s Doctor Strange, but, as with many of these high-profile superhero projects, many names circulate before the role is cast.

Leto spoke with THR on Nov. 6 and implied that he was finally zeroing on his next role. “I do [have my eye on one project]. I am excited about what’s happening,” he told THR. “There are incredible opportunities and I’m very grateful for them. I’m looking forward to making films again now that the tour is wrapping up. It’s going to be an exciting 2015.”

However, he wouldn’t reveal the project, saying he was “under lock and key.” “I’ve sworn to keep my mouth shut but I think that very shortly there will be something to talk about, that’s for sure,” he said.

What do you think? Dustin Rowles at Pajiba points out how people weren’t thrilled about Heath Ledger’s casting back in the day, and Heath proved everyone wrong. I think Jared will do just fine. He’s got the chops, and he’s so picky about his roles. Jared won’t sign on unless he thinks this project is worthy.

The casting for Suicide Squad could get interesting. Deadline reports that Tom Hardy is a possibility (probably for Bane, right?). Will Smith and Margot Robbie are also in the mix. Latino Review says Cara Delevingne could play Harley Quinn. It sounds ridiculous, but Cara received positive reviews in Face of an Angel. Who knows, she could work out well.

What doesn’t work? Jared Leto and this blasted fanny pack.

UPDATE: Collider reports that Margot Robbie has officially signed on to play Harley Quinn. Maybe Cara is up for a different role?

I think he proved his talent in Dallas Buyers Club and I am ok with this choice.

    • Ange says:

+1. I didn’t realise it was him until after I saw the film and I remember thinking how good he was, just really nailed it.

  2. Zip says:

He might be a douchebag but I have yet to see one movie where he’s not good in it.

    • FingerBinger says:

He wasn’t good in Alexander. Then again it was a terrible movie and everyone in it was bad.

  3. cr says:

Jared might be interesting as The Joker. Might be.
And Margot Robbie is reportedly Harley Quinn, but I don’t think that’s officially confirmed.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

I thought Margot was being considered for Poison Ivy?

      • cr says:

I think she’s been mentioned as a possibility as HQ as well, since the beginning. This morning’s newest ‘confirmation’ is from Collider.

  4. Marianne says:

DC announced they would do a Suicide Squad movie after Sony announced they would do Sinister Six (which is basically the same kind of idea, a movie about supervillains except they would be from Spider-man’s world). So, its probably no longer gonna feel so “original” to you when you’re seeing both of them back to back.

  5. scout says:

LOL! Fanny pack at Disneyland! He is a great actor, looks more like Russell Brand up there.

  6. Insomniac says:

I like him and he’d probably be an interesting Joker.

That being said, why is he walking around with his boots half unzipped? He looks like he’s going to trip and fall flat on his face.

  7. Greek Chic says:

The muscle tee in more offensive than the fanny pack.

  8. Mimi says:

Not sure anyone could top Heath Ledger, but Leto is a solid choice if they are looking to reinvent the character. Could be cool???

  9. Molly says:

I just read that Margot Robbie is confirmed as Harley Quinn. That is perfect casting, IMHO. Looking forward to this movie more than Batman v. Superman or whatever it is.

  10. M says:

Impressive the career of Margot Robbie. She is getting more job offers than Lupita, who won an Oscar.

  11. Eleonor says:

he has a better hairband game than I have !

  12. kri says:

I think JL could quite honestly knock it out of the park in this role. In real life, to me he is a total douche-he may even be the douche factory. But onscreen, he’s pretty amazing. I am very curious to see how he would take this on, considering that Heath L. gave one of the most amazing performaces I have ever seen. Just sayin.

  13. Grant says:

Margot is going to KILL it as Harley. She’s had that NYC/Brooklyn/Long Island accent down pat in Wolf of Wall Street.

  14. miriam says:

I’m so sick of these superhero films.
