New season of ‘Project Runway’ still in court limbo

New York Fashion Week has come and gone, and for fans of the hit reality show “Project Runway,” it was just another cruel reminder that there’s still no new season. Due to a bitter battle between The Weinstein Co. and Lifetime over which company owns the rights to the show, season 6, which was taped last year, may never be aired. The three finalists still showed their creations at Fashion Week, but had to do so anonymously. So…is Runway in, or out?

For the first time in Runway history, the swan song [season finale], taped at New York City’s Bryant Park on Feb. 20, took place in a pop culture vacuum. Because of ongoing lawsuits- involving The Weinstein Co., which produces Runway; NBC Universal, parent company to Runway’s old network, Bravo; and Lifetime, which says it owns the rights to Runway’s sixth season – not a single minute of the new season has aired. As a result, this “finale” was a logistical nightmare. To maintain secrecy, none of the three finalists were permitted to appear on stage – and their collections were sent down the runway anonymously.

..”It’s so depressing,” sighed season 4 winner Christian Siriano, after the show. “There wasn’t the normal energy in the room, where everyone’s soooo excited. The designers must be depressed backstage. They can’t have any fun!”

No one entangled in the Runway debacle is having any fun right now. The fight began last April, when Harvey Weinstein announced he was moving the series from Bravo to Lifetime, staring with season 6, which was to premiere in January. Bravo’s parent company, NBC Universal, immediately sued Weinstein, claiming he had violated the network’s right of first refusal. The Weinstein Co. countersued NBC Universal, and then Lifetime jumped in and sued…everyone.

…Sources say a settlement is unlikely anytime soon. (The next court date is scheduled for March 19.) If the case goes to trial, the next cycle – which filmed in L.A. last fall and is almost entirely edited and ready for broadcast – could become the lost season of Runway.

“My heart goes out to the designers,” says cycle 5 finalist Korto Momolu. “People who are in charge need to think about the reason the show was created, which was to give underdogs a chance.”

It sucks for the designers, to be sure – but it sucks even more for fans of the show. Runway is one of the few reality shows left that is a competition mostly based on talent, rather than dramatics or drunken antics and skanky behavior. Runway’s stressed out designer wannabes are true entertainment for people who love fashion. And let’s not forget the best part of the show – Tim Gunn! I miss his little nuggets of fashion wisdom each week. I hope these network catfights end soon.

how sad for the designers. No one should work so hard to send a collection down a runway at fashion week and then not get to stand up and take credit for it. For goodness sake. How would that even work? If you wanted to buy something from the collection? What about the fashion spread? With Nina changing jobs did the photo shoot switch mags too?

    Make it Work…

  2. Trillion says:

PR and Top Chef are the only “reality” shows I watch and I’m one obsessed bitch when they’re on! If it doesn’t work out, I sincerely hope that someone comes in and fills the void with something similar that includes T.G. They can switch out Heidi, Nina and even Micheal but not Tim! (to you PR fans, http://projectrungay.blogspot.com/ is a must!!)

  3. Ash says:

That’s a real shame. I don’t like reality shows AT ALL, but I do love this one. Make a decision already and stop making these designers show their work anonymously! What if this feud last a few years? Then what will they do with their line? What a crappy limbo state they are left in.

  4. Obvious says:

Well premiere season 7 as 6, figure out the legal bull and then release the “lost”season at least on DVD and have to two companies split the profits. bada-bing bada-boom and everyone is happy-especially the fans.

Not to mention, having it on DVD would be amazing because no commercial breaks, and no having to wait on the edge of your seat a full week for the next eppy!

  5. NotBlonde says:

Why the hell did Harvey Weinstein want to move it away from Bravo anyway? It was doing really really well on Bravo.

So agree with your last par. MSat, one of the few reality shows that is actually gimmick-free and genuinely about promoting talent and hard work. I love everything about this show and it’s such a shame for the designers involved that the networks can’t resolve their differences.

Project Runway Canada is waaay better anyway – I’ll take Iman over Heidi anyday. There is no phony, be-nice-to-everyone on PRC, and the Judges Judge!

  8. michellle says:

Love the show! Love Time Gunn!

Yet, on some occassions I think they’ve let better designers go in favor of crazier or more confrontational personalities for the sake of higher ratings.

Also, w/ the exception of guest judges, it seems the regular 3 tend to consistently agree w/ each other as if they’re afraid to disagree.

Would love it they not only worked it out. But also spent more time showing the clothes in detail, and how they’re made. Not so interested in the designers themselves.

  9. Blah Girls says:

OHHHHH i was wondering why this season never aired, whatever happens i hope they figure it out soon!!

  10. Ron says:

I miss my RUNWAY!! WAAAAAAAAAAAA Although RuPaul’s Drag Race has filled a bit of the void…..

I’m getting my fix in by watching Project Runway Canada on YouTube. I’ll admit it’s not AS good but at least it’s some kind of Project Runway.
