Star: Reese Witherspoon got hammered at a daytime charity luncheon

Here are some assorted photos of Reese Witherspoon out and about in NYC yesterday. She did an interview with GMA and a screening of Wild. She really, really wants an Oscar nomination, obviously, and she’s going full hustle for it. There is a question, in my mind, about this current Oscar hustle being something like a “comeback” for Reese. She’s not putting herself out there like it’s a “comeback,” probably because she doesn’t want people to think that she was ever at a low point. But she’s really hoping that she puts last year’s liquor-soaked arrest behind her.

It was last year’s arrest – and the fact that we could watch the whole video of the American Citizen’s utter meltdown – that really changed public perception of Reese. Still, I guess most PR people have told Reese that she’s back in the public’s good graces (because she’s blonde and sugary, obviously) and that she doesn’t need to change her behavior, even though it was perfectly clear that Reese and Jim Toth are both total boozehounds these days. Reese and Jim were even photographed boozing it up just days after their alcohol-related arrests. And over the past year, there are more and more stories about Reese’s alcohol-related shenanigans. Like this one, which has Reese getting hammered at a pre-noon charity event.

It may have been 5 p.m. somewhere, but it was only 11:45 a.m. when Reese Witherspoon started slugging wine at a recent charity auction in Los Angeles.

“When Reese arrived, she seemed uneasy and apprehensive,” an eyewitness tells Star, adding that the A-Lister seemed to loosen up once she had a glass of vino in her hand. “As Reese kept drinking ,she started to feel more comfortable and got a lot chattier.”

In fact, by the time the auction began, the actress was already on her second glass. “She was bouncing around in her seat and entertaining her table,” the source reveals.

In April 2013, Reese and her husband, Jim Toth, were taken into custody after being pulled over by a Georgia State trooper on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. But now that embarrassing arrest seems to be just a boozy bad dream. “She wasn’t falling down drunk,” the spy explains. “But she had nearly three glasses.” So much for walking the line!

[From Star Magazine]

Three glasses of wine at a charity event in the middle of the day? That’s so… 1980s. It feels dated, right? Like, that’s Mad Men-style drinking. When every businessman was half in the bag by 2 pm. As we learn more about health and alcoholism, it does seem like that kind of day-time social drinking is frowned upon more and more. Or maybe I just don’t run in the same circles as Reese. But seriously, how can someone down three glasses of wine at a luncheon event and not have the whole rest of the day blown? I would need a nap.

apprehensive and full of anxiety, lol this sounds like she was coming down a binge drinking session and needed to calm her nerves.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

Like a little hair of the dog? Ew.

    • joan says:

      The real question is:
What size is the glass? The birdbath-sized that people on TV love to fill with half a bottle of wine are huge. You see that all the time and it always amazes me.

Three modest-sized glasses is also a lot at noon. But a giant baloon glass is pretty lethal.

      • Queenbee says:

Usually at fancy restaurants they don’t over fill. Assuming the same for a charity event. They give you the correct 6 oz size or whatever it is. I usually fill my glass halfway at home and it seems under halfway depending on the type of wine and glass.

      • hip says:

looks like weird energy between her daughter and the stepdad.something is off

    • Lisa says:

I can drink 3 glasses of wine at a charity luncheon and be sober enough to run 5 k 3 hours later. I don’t get what the big deal is! Some people go have babies and then they are all “oh, I cant even drink ONE glass without getting wasted” but thats not everyone! 3 glasses is a buzz for someone who can pace themselves through a 2 hour luncheon, but it aint wasted!

      • L says:

Thank you Lisa! I get super excited at events and nervous around new People. I don’t know…this doesn’t seem like a big deal. Let alone a story! (Eye roll) let the girl have a drink. If she goes home and naps so be it!

  2. Esmom says:

Daytime drinking does seem to be frowned upon these days, especially for people who have to do things afterwards like work. Or drive. Or go home and make dinner. Presumably Reese didn’t have to do any of those things…so maybe no big deal?

  3. Tr says:

So? Maybe she took a nap. My God a woman drank 3 whole glasses of wine and got chatty?
    This is reaching.

    • Mellie says:

      Agree.

    • Sarah says:

Thank you. I was starting to think Celebitchy was being run by the Church Lady. As for Reese being photographed ” boozing it up” after her arrest….a glass of wine with a meal is not boozing it up. Lord help me.

Also, the main thing that “lubricates the wallets” at a charity auction is an open bar. If they were having a charity auction at Noon, my guess is that everyone else there was also drinking wine.

      • Kat says:

I was thinking Church Lady too! I’ve drank more than three glasses at brunch. Who knew what she was doing the rest of the day?

    • NYer says:

+1. If I had to sit there with ladies who lunch, I’d have the whole bottle in a white-knuckle grip.

      • minx says:

        I’d be shooting up.
Though, seriously, I could–and did–drink at lunch or during the day when I was younger, but now it just wrecks me. I would need a long nap.

      • Name du Jour says:

“in a white-knuckle grip” ahahaha! Same here.

    • Linn says:

Agree. When I read the headline I thought she did something inappropriate and showed Depp-esque behaviour or something.

    • susiecue says:

+1. Could be me if it was offered!

    • alreadyready says:

Not a fan but I can’t even imagine being at an event and being observed like this, people around counting how many glasses I drink.
Who wants to live like that? No, thanks.

      • Queenbee says:

Could you imagine everything you did being observed and reported? I would never leave the house.

Once a month the tabloids would say I was pregnant and at the same time using drugs for frequent trips to the bathroom to “freshen up.” Weeklong binge, bloated, moody….nope sorry guys just that special time of month.

    • Petee says:

When I was growing up drinking was socially acceptable. It was the thing to do especially if you came from a well off family.

    • tealily says:

Yes, I agree. Three glasses is not insane. I wouldn’t drink three glasses of wine and then return to work to finish out my afternoon, but if that was the main thing I was doing that day and I didn’t have to drive myself home, sure why not? She’s an American Citizen; she can do what she wants!

    • lucy2 says:

Seriously, as long as she wasn’t driving, who cares? It was a charity luncheon, I’m guessing the wine was flowing freely. If it was a PTA meeting or something, then there might be an issue, but this? Nah.

But anyway…when did we start believing Star magazine again? Their stories are usually garbage.

    • Katerina says:

Lol at our annual Christmas administrative luncheon it’s pretty common to get tipsy. I think in a social gathering/special occasion situation daytime drinking isn’t so bad. But maybe don’t get wasted. Also Reese does have a history. There’s a Lainey blind about an actress drinking several jack and cokes while coming back to NY from TIFF. That’s a short half hour flight and she was demanding a drink before the flight took off. I’m guessing that this blind might be about her. 😜🍷🍷🍻🍻

    • Claudia says:

I am from Europe and I would totally drink 2 or 3 glasses of wine if I would attend an auction, even if is not even afternoon. Why not? In France we have wine during lunchbreak as well, no big deal.

    • Godwina says:

Yeah, with you. I’m not a fan of RW, OR much of a drinker myself, but some wine with a fancy lunch? Whatevs.

  4. Cupcake says:

3 glasses of wine at lunch is NBD. Maybe for a petite thing like Reese but I could hack it. Have a cup of coffee and carry on with your day!

    • JB says:

Okay?!! That’s a Wednesday for me… just kidding. But seriously, I’d be hella annoyed if people were reporting to the tabloids that I was boozing it up cuz I had almost 3 glasses of wine. BFD.

  5. GingerCrunch says:

Daytime drinking only on vacation, otherwise the whole day is shot.

  6. Granger says:

Yes, three glasses of wine with lunch would render me useless for the rest of the day. But to say it’s “dated” or “frowned upon” to drink in the middle of the day? Meh. I don’t see anything wrong with the occasional (especially around the holidays) lunchtime booze fest. Now, whether this is an occasional thing for Reese is another story…

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Me neither. My husband and I have a beer or two or a couple of glasses of champagne with lunch or brunch on Saturdays in the winter, then we take a nap. Neither of us is a heavy drinker. That might be all the alcohol we have all week.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

Add me to the useless list. I wait on wine until after dinner clean-up & next day preparations are complete because after a glass or two I just want to go to sleep. Yes, I am soooo much fun.

  7. vdubs says:

Eh I’m a bartender so I see day drinking quite often. If she is a drinker, 3 glasses of wine are breakfast. Most people can drink, stop and be fine. Just my opinion though. She probably does go home and sleep it off. I think she just likes to drink whenever, kind of like me!

    • Josefa says:

I’m not even a regular drinker and I think 3 glasses of wine is really tame. Heck, I’ve been drinking wine since I was 13.

  8. Angie says:

Let me quote her latest scenario:
“Do you know who me is? Me is Reese…as in Resses pieces – the purrfect combination of chocolate and peanut butter, totally eeresistable! Wanna try?”

    Feeling silly this morning! LOL

  9. scout says:

LOL! Glad she is not in the South this time with her husband. Atlanta traffic police not looking forward to see her all over again.

  10. Jaderu says:

I feel like Kaiser is secretly judging me for having Captain Morgan with my cinnamon toast crunch. They’re complimenting flavors really.

  11. Eh, my mom drinks Crown&Seven with a coke steadily throughout the day. She knows her limits, and I’ve never even seen her tipsy, let alone drunk.

    • G&T says:

Do you mean Crown and 7? As in Crown Royal and 7-up? Or Seven Crown and Coke? Either way, your mum may have a problem if she drinks spirits regularly throughout the day.

  12. Comity says:

I don’t think the three glasses of wine at an event midday is anything to clutch your pearls over. However, regularly having three glasses of wine when you’re sitting at home alone at 12 PM , well……. Hopefully she had somebody drive her home

  13. Talie says:

Remember when her team(?) briefly floated the idea in People that Jim would go to rehab? I always admired that he didn’t buckle to that. Especially when it was clear that she was the angry drunk.

  14. Anon says:

I think the problem might be is whether she stops the day at 3 glasses or continues on her day with more booze at her next stop. One glass is too many and 3 bottles is not enough. And if she does this everyday or most everyday.

  15. Sheena says:

I would drink 3 glasses of wine at lunch if I could. Then I would take a nap of course. But I have to work so water it is!

  16. LT says:

When on vacation or during the weekend, wine at lunch is really not a big deal. Three glasses would make me tipsy, but it’s not necessarily the first step towards meth and freebasing.

  17. Dirty Martini says:

Completely agree with several posters on this thread. It’s a charity luncheon, you BET they serve wine! Who among us hasn’t opened our purses more after drinking a glass or two of wine? (My internet shopping is fueled largely by chardonnay.)

My own limit is 2 glasses of wine generally. Do I drink at lunch? Not on days where I work after lunch, drive or otherwise have obligations. Other days? SUre, if I go out to lunch, I ‘ll have a glass or two.

In no way am I excusing or diminishing the Toth DUI, or even Reese’s behavior in the arrest either. TOo much. They clearly made a serious mistake.

But she shouldn’t be defined by it for the rest of her life …..and having a couple glasses of wine at a charity luncheon shouldn’t be blood for the sharks.

  18. Grace says:

Charity event + alcohol = loosening the wallet = donations. Common behavior.

  19. Notthemafia says:

Haha what a non-story. Reese should come and live in London where a failure to have at least one glass of wine at lunch ( when you go out to lunch I add not at your desk ) is accompanied by an assumption that you must be pregnant!

  20. Beckysuz says:

I’m Italian, I’ve been drinking wine my whole life. I don’t drink constantly or excessively, but I could drink three glasses of wine WITH a meal and still be perfectly functional. I doubt I ever would at lunch, but to each his own and all that. Also, her skin is amazing….not a huge fan but I’m jealous of her smooth skin

    • Beckysuz says:

Of course that depends on whether it’s a standard restaurant pour of 6 oz per glass or the way I pour wine at home ..which is decidedly more generous😉

  21. Cindy says:

Maybe she was just feeling really “complex” and “multi-faceted” and had to take the edge off.

  22. Josefa says:

What kind of wine do you drink in the USA? I’m Chilean and 3 glasses of wine just leaves me somewhat tipsy. In order to be smoothly drunk I need at least 5.

  23. phlyfiremama says:

Are you talking about the same “I’ve never done DRUGS and had to have someone teach me how to act while on them for a film” Resse Witherspoon? Hmmm.

  24. minxx says:

Hmm.. seems like a lot or such a tiny woman. If she had two glasses, I’d say it’s fine, but three seems a lot or a mid-day charity function. If she didn’t have a history I’d say, she just really enjoyed the wine. Still, I get tipsy after 2 glasses, so three seems excessive to me. I wonder if she has a drinking problem, like an older lady in my family who can’t have lunch without 3 glasses of wine, then has wine (couple of glasses) at ca. 4 pm with snacks followed by wine with dinner (also 2-3 glasses). She drives, naturally, so we’re worried but the rest of the family is in denial (I remember her being in shock that I refused wine when pregnant.. in her days, women drank and smoked during pregnancy and “kids all turned out just fine”.. well, I take issue with that 😉 .

  25. Debbie says:

    She’s a drunk.

    • Gistine says:

Sounds like she has a drinking problem to me. Between the incident with her husband, the Met Gala, and getting hammered during the day, I’d say something is up. One of my very best friends is a major alcoholic and her two favorite things are drinking wine during the day and lying about it. She also wakes up with tremors. It’s sad.

  26. Rhiley says:

Those clips of her arrest reminded me of how next level crazy she really is.

  27. NP says:

She had much more than what is stated here, drove off in her black Range Rover. She has always had a problem. Was the real reason of the her first divorce. Nanci Ryder and her spun it and placed everything on ex-husband to cover it up. Jimmy Toth is just as bad and this was his second DUI. First one involved illegal drugs and alcohol. They are both meant for each other.

  28. Anon says:

Well she sure is trying to get rid of her good girl image for those that believed she ever was.. I never bought into that PR and have always believed she was pure BIT — marketing and PR is excellent though. Her hubby doing a great job …

  29. Kitten says:

Wow, looks like my Drunk-Cleaning Sunday would be highly frowned by this crowd.

  30. Meg says:

this sounds like an addiction-when you feel you have to drink to be sociable that’s a problem. Brett favre talked about this, ava gardner. Some people are natural class clowns and the center of attention and others aren’t and are instead more self conscious and shy. Those have to loosen up their inhibitions so they drink so they become class clowns and entertaining because reese clearly doesn’t just want to be an actor, she wants to be a movie star which means you have to be entertaining.

  31. Sarah says:

I think this judging her drinking is definitely an American thing ‘nearly 3 glasses’ at lunch for a charity event in Australia is pretty standard, especially if it’s a Saturday. It’s her life, she’s clearly not a detriment to society. Stop judging!

  32. Juluho says:

Gawd Reese! Everyone knows if you’re going to drink at an event it *has* to be mimosas. Act like a lady.

  33. nope says:

Girl’s got a drinking problem….good to know I’m not the only one 🙂

  34. LindaBelcher says:

First time ever commenting! I just wanted to share that my husband works in Hollywood (behind the scenes) and it seems like drinking is no big deal there. Most of his coworkers have tequila in their desks and fully stocked bars in their office for happy hours, stressful days, etc. When they go out to lunch, margaritas and beer are the rule rather than the exception. I will say that most of his coworkers drink responsibly and rarely do any of them need to take a cab home. It’s a somewhat foreign concept to me, and yes, rather Mad Men-esque, but it’s quite common in his industry.

  35. unicorn says:

good grief, 3 glasses of wine, no big deal. I’m sure she had a driver and if I was able to afford one and had to be at an event where the drinks were flowing I would have some myself. I will say however that if I were arrested for a DUI I may start to look at my drinking and ask myself if it was becoming a problem… just sayin….

  36. Nk868 says:

Star magazine? Didn’t we used to put that in the headline as a disclaimer…?

  37. Jellybean says:

Daytime drinking is a friggin riot! You bunch need to get off your judgy high horses and let your hair down!

  38. Sammy_dog says:

3 glasses of wine? No problem. Just drink some water afterwards.
