Does Ben Affleck expect a best actor Oscar nomination for ‘Gone Girl’?

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner look loved up as they hug while taking a romantic stroll in LA
These are photos of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner out for a walk and a smoke yesterday. Their casual style is impressive and they look so comfortable and happy together. They look like catalog models. These photos are making my spidey sense tingle because Affleck is usually surly looking around paparazzi, and he often looks grumpy or hungover on the red carpet. Plus Jennifer doesn’t usually dress this smartly. We get the happiest photos of Ben out with Jennifer around awards season, I’m just saying, but maybe the anticipation points him in a good mood.

Affleck’s already won an Oscar for screenwriting and best picture. Do you think he hopes to get a nomination in the best actor category for Gone Girl? He’s not on anyone’s shortlist and I think he knows how much of a long shot even a nomination would be. Affleck wasn’t nominated for a SAG or a Globe, although his co-star Rosamund Pike got nominations in the lead actress category for both. He gave a decent to solid performance, it wasn’t an awards winning performance. Affleck could get nominated for some of the secondary awards coming up though, like the Critics Choice Awards (the nominations will be announced this Monday). He’s got a shot at a People’s Choice Award at least, although those are pretty much fixed.

No, I don’t think he expects to be nominated for another Academy Award. This is just a nice outing with his wife. Nothing to see here. Affleck is probably just happy to have some down time after Batman wrapped. He can finally let loose and eat solid food. Or maybe he’s just really proud of his work. You know what I mean.

Okay I will admit it, I am a sucker for Ben and have been since Good Will Hunting. It would not bother me a bit if he picked up the Oscar. But I doubt very much that he will!

I’m with you. Ben is actually in my Top 5. I’ve been a fan since GWH but I remember him (and Matt) in School Ties even. (Loved that movie)

I actually thought Ben was really good in Gone Girl. I didn’t read the book (though I knew the plot and all) so perhaps that colored my judgment. But I could see why Fincher wanted him. He has enough likability even with the fratboy, douchebag aura he can possess as well. It was important for the character to do these crappy things and yet still have a certain amount of likability. I loved him and Rosamund Pike in it. Some of the reviews I read early on even pointed him out over her though I think she was the perfect Ice Queen in the role. But I believe he knows his limitations as an actor. I think he was really happy to work with Fincher and really stretch in this role and turn in a good performance–possibly he may have hoped for some awards recognition (it’s his most award-baity role in some time and in the foreseeable future) but I think he’s also realistic about how crowded the men’s field is this year. He has a producing Oscar (?) for Argo and a writing one for GWH and will probably have a directing one someday.

He looks like he’s performing for the camera, and he appears aware that they are being papped.

  3. Rachel says:

He knows he’s not getting an Oscar nomination.

They look good and confortable,he’s Batman for the 5 next years,he’s the lead of a successful movie …of course they’re happy
And i don’t think it’s a photo-op.He’s smoking ( bad bad for his image) and you can see when they saw the photograph

You are right. Producing and screenwriting.

I don’t know that he is searching seriously for a nomination here, he might be fishing a bit. I think Gone Girl is his best work since Hollywoodland and showed that he can be a good actor when given the right part. His smugness and lack of emotional range played really well in the film as Nick.

But this year is crazy deep with phenomenal acting work so he is not getting a nod. I think he gets that he has a far outside chance of a nod. But hustling sometimes works like at Jennifer Anisten with the Golden Globes and SAG nominations.

How cute are they? Beautiful couple. As much as I love Gone Girl, nope, I don’t think he should get an Oscar for that. Rosamund is way better.

    • Happy21 says:

I totally agree. He was good but I didn’t find that he was Oscar material. I always feel like he’s about to smirk when he’s acting. Like Jerry Seinfeld used to always do on Seinfeld.

That being said I will be disappointed if Rosamund doesn’t get an Oscar nod. She was fabulous!

Is he walking with his wife or a platonic female friend from high school? Give me the hung over bitter Ben walking with his family, after a night of gambling at strip clubs, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else than in the park with screaming kids with his wife bitching in his ear about not spending enough time with the family.

  8. lucy2 says:

I imagine he would have initially hoped so, given the role and the director, but it’s pretty clear only Rosamund is going to get recognized for acting work for the film. She was great in it while he was good, so I think that’s fair.

  9. funcakes says:

Am I the only one who thought “Gone girl” was a sophomoric piece of dreck. The writing was awful and the acting was just as bad. Are people confusing a plot twist with good movie making?
Ben was was great in Hollywood land. He did an excellent job of conveying frustration from being type cast as Superman and the despair of knowing his career is over. It was a good movie that never needed a plot twist to stay interesting.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

In my opinion,Gone Girl is a mess because of the script. It’s a good black comedy ( at every twist,Affleck does a joke) and an accurate point on the media but as thriller,it’s just garbage.Gone Girl is a soap opera filmed by Fincher

      • funcakes says:

I couldn’t put my finger on it but your right. It would have made a better over the top black comedy. Ben was funny in some of the scenes. Not to take anything away from Patrick Harris, but you’re right it was a mess otherwise.

    • frivolity says:

You’re not the only one. I saw it last night and thought it sucked. I read the book because it was an easy, fast read and kind of suspenseful, but I wouldn’t say it was any good. The movie was even worse. Not sure why it is getting such accolades – maybe simply because Fincher was the director. I’ve loved him since Seven and he is probably still a great director when he has a good script, but Gone Girl’s was not …

  10. Susan says:

These photos weren’t staged as he would never purposefully be seen smoking. I don’t understand what happened to the pink wallet, green pen and the other item sticking out of the black book. And the cover of the black book says “AV??” In one set of pictures and clearly says 2014 (without green pen or wallet) in another picture. Very weird.

  11. Rhiley says:

    Didn’t know he smoked= disappointing.

  12. Laura taylor says:

I think Ben should get a award for just being Ben ! The award for best Ben goes to Ben

  13. frivolity says:

I just always get the feeling that Affleck’s one of those typical Hollywood frat boy types who thinks really highly of himself in terms of his attractiveness and intelligence while also having super low self-esteem if he does not get external validation. Plus, he seems like the kind of guy who charms the media, the ladies, and the parents when they visit, but then is a real dick otherwise. And Garner seems to be a social climber who likes being with the handsome, popular guy, even if he is an ass.

  14. Frankie says:

Yes, he has been smoking again for awhile now. First time I saw him smoking again was when he was doing Argo. And yes, he goes to Vegas quite a lot. There were sightings of him lately since Thanksgiving weekend because BvS wrapped already feel bad for Jen Garner but she signed up for this marriage. After the Save the Children event he left her and she took a commercial airline the following day while he took the jet that night. Maybe he had a prior commitment, who knows. But this is not the first time.

I like her but not him. He seems to have a lot of internal struggles. He still likes to party, drink, gambles, etc. who knows what else. You know what I mean?

  15. mike says:

He’d make an amazing couple with Blake Lively. They had an affair while shooting that film, but I wish there was a more scandalous situation there. I think her leaked nude selfies were intended for Ben Affleck.

    I find him very attractive.

  16. Vegas says:

Hey @benaffleck did u have fun during your last trip to Vegas? R U the least bit concerned that details will come out soon? @TMZ @usweekly
