Keira Knightley’s pregnancy confirmed: will this affect her Oscar campaign?

Yay, we’re finally getting this confirmed. Back in November, everyone started Bump Watching Keira Knightley. She kept wearing loose gowns and big coats, and considering that she’s been talking about babies in interviews, many people thought she was knocked up. Then these photos happened – Keira walking in NYC, wearing overalls. She looked very knocked up. Well, happy news. Keira’s rep has confirmed: Keira and her husband James Righton are expecting their first kid.

The speculation had actually reached a fever pitch in the past few days. Page Six reported yesterday that Keira is more than three months along and that she’s been turning down alcohol at ever event for months. Sources also “confirmed” the news to Us Weekly yesterday evening as well.

Keira received Best Supporting Actress nominations this week at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. There is every hope/belief that she’s on the path to the Oscar shortlist too. We haven’t been talking about it that much, mostly because Benedict Cumberbatch’s Oscar campaign tends to suck all the air out of the room for everybody else in the film. But I believe Harvey Weinstein will probably put some money into Keira’s campaign, and I believe Bendy probably wants Keira to get nominated as well. But will Keira win? As I mentioned in a previous post, this year’s Best Supporting Actress category is pretty stacked. I think Keira will totally get nominated, but I kind of think the award will probably go to Patricia Arquette. But Keira will put up a good fight! Especially when we get to see her maternity style – that will go over really, really well with her Oscar campaign. Think about Natalie Portman’s campaign for Black Swan, you know? Oscar loves a pregnant lady.

I am beyond baffled how a pregnancy (or engagement/marriage) is so effective in an actor’s favour during awards season.

    • It is what it is says:

      I agree with you.

    • Chinoiserie says:

Well it is positive attention to the actors, it keeps them and their films by association in the publics minds.

    • kay says:

I was JUST thinking THAT. Wtf? Why is it relevant? Ok so a lot l I have to do to win an Oscar is starve myself, get engaged, get knocked up, and do a ton of interviews.

Seriously Gtfo. This is so annoying. I got to hand it to angelina for just promoting her film and hoping for a nod. I’d rather someone win for their WORK not their personal lives. Winning Oscar for getting engaged, pregnant or starving yourself is like getting a promotion at work for having a baby, getting married or getting sick.

      Ridiculous

Angelina just promotes her film and hopes for a nod? All those shots of her out and about with kids, strategically timed, and magazine covers, etc are not PR for her movie? Puleez. She gives little tid bits about the kids in every interview around awards or premier seasons. She definitely used her pregnancies to her advantage, as well. The public and media are interested in pregnancy-it’s an exciting time for some and people live for new excitement. So by default, actors will get more attention if pregnant and some will use this to advantage. AJ is just very good at it, b/c she makes it all look so natural and not contrived or part of her PR. She’s strategic mastery at work. Also, I doubt Keira will talk much about this; seems like British are not as tacky about it. Unlke Portman and Kunis who say they don’t like paps but then overshare and manipulate.
Scarjo has been pretty impressive about building a career that is not fueled by her private life and pregnancy/motherhood. Time will tell….

Agreed about Jolie, Irm. And I say that with appreciation; Jolie is definitely one of the few people who knows how to make very calculated communication strategies look natural and non-forced, and that needs to be respected (especially in a business that seems full of communication amateurs as of late).

Just promoting her film and hoping for a nod? LOL!!! She’s one of the most strategic and manipulative celebrities around. Give me a break.

Because Oscar winners are to meant be ambassadors of Hollywood. Ambassadors are meant to espouse good family values to shill whatever Hollywood is trying to sell to the mini van majority. And it really, really is about the sell as the Sony Hack showed. There are no different from any political candidate.

Skipping the Oscar broadcast this year, after the Hack has laid bare about what conniving idiots they are, you can bet we are going to get a schmaltzy presentations about the ‘magic of movies’.

But no hate for Keira here. She looks radiant.

    • maria says:

Yes it’s really not about the performance of the actors/actresses anymore (if it ever were?). Only about who captivates the voters best by playing happy family etc & have the most power and connections behind them. I will NEVER forget how Goop won over the amazing Cate Blanchett!!! F-cking disgrace.

    • lucy2 says:

I honestly don’t think it makes any difference in the actual voting. It gets the actor more publicity, certainly, but beyond that…I don’t know.

  2. Lucy says:

    Yayyyyy, Congrats Keira and James!!!

  3. eowyn says:

Maybe that will be her campaign’s angle ? I mean BC will use his engagment and perhaps his wedding, and KK will use this.
    Oh Harvey, you ain’t slick

  4. INeedANap says:

Congrats to her and her husband! That’s all I got, because Oscar campaigns baffle me.

    • katP says:

with you on that one. I’m so excited to see her maternity style, you know she’ll still be rocking Chanel *swoon*

  5. Chinoiserie says:

Nice that this is finally confirmed, I dislike speculating peoples potential pregnancies a bit. Congratulations and I hope Keira gets an Oscar nom too (win seems rather unlikely). Hopefully this pregnancy helps her not to get completely overshadowed by Cumberbatch.

    • Mikasa says:

Oh, didn’t you know…Cumberbatch is the father!
Lol He wishes!! Harvey would love that for an Oscar publicity.

ps. I just realized Kiera and her hubby look like siblings!

  6. smcollins says:

    Awwwww….yay! Congrats to the parents-to-be!

  7. Amelia says:

Whoooo, I’m actually super happy about this!
Congratulations to them and I hope thy have a lovely, healthy baby.
Can’t wait to see Keira’s maternity style, she’ll knock it out of the park.

  8. Alyce says:

I’ve always really liked her. I hope she has a healthy pregnancy!

  9. MissMary says:

Aw, I bet her baby’s going to be adorable AND loved–I see KK as turning into a total mama bear (in a good way),

  10. Thinker says:

Love his surname: Righton. RIGHT ON!

  11. RobN says:

I was thinking that she’d just won one she didn’t deserve, when I got to the end of the article and it mentioned Natalie Portman. It’s probably my age, but they’re the same person to me. Cannot keep them straight, at all.

  12. Reece says:

    Awww congrats to them!

  13. GingerCrunch says:

Who gives a care about the Oscars?!? Keira becoming a mom will only make her MORE awesome, I’m sure. Good for them!

    • Ravensdaughter says:

Good point. I think of the Oscars as the equivalent to a figure skating completion.

Being a mom, now that’s tough. Being a single mom, even tougher.

In Keira’s case, it looks like she picked the right man, so she will be able to enjoy motherhood rather than scrambling through it.

  14. HN says:

OMG I hope she wins all of the awards. I love her!

  15. Ravensdaughter says:

What’s with the feathery looking trim on her dress?
