Benedict Cumberbatch: Sherlock ‘realizes he can’t beat female intuition’

wenn21933127

Here are some catching-up stories of our Celebatchy mascot Benedict Cumberbatch. He hasn’t given any new interviews this week, just FYI. Apparently, he went to Scotland for the Christmas holiday so he could spend time with Sophie Hunter and her family. The Cumberbitches have been freaking out about this Scottish holiday, I guess. I don’t know? I don’t get why it’s a thing. Bendy and Sophie are engaged, of course he’s going to spend time with her family and I assume she’ll spend lots of time with his parents as well.

So, what else? Hilariously, even though Bendy did major voice work for The Penguins of Madagascar, he STILL cannot pronounce “penguins” in the traditional/correct way. Someone Vine’d a clip of TPOM with Benedict’s Agent Classified wolf saying “pen-wings” – go here to see. Amazing.

And finally, Vulture released MOAR BENDY QUOTES from their New York Magazine profile of him several months ago. We covered the interview at the time, and as I said then, Bendy likes to talk. He talked so much they couldn’t even include all of the good quotes. You can read the new Vulture piece here, and here are some highlights:

Why he can’t do soundbytes: “I love talking about The Imitation Game, and three-minute slots is a really ugly way to do it. I’m sh-t at that. I would never be good at Twitter. When there’s actually somebody going like [wrap-it-up gesture], I’m fearing that, so I just keep talking and keep talking, keep answering, to give the journalist as much as possible, even if only 20 seconds gets used. But it’s exhausting and frustrating. Why the f–k can’t we syndicate interviews? I don’t mind the slog. I want as many people to get it and hear about [the movie], and for me to promote it. I just wish there was a more inventive or unique way of doing it sometimes.”

His dance-off with Michael Fassbender: “Everyone’s called that a dance-off. We were dancing together, as grown men should. There’s no ‘off’ about it. We were dancing ‘on.’ We were together, in perfect male harmony. We were grooving around and dancing back-to-back. It wasn’t like, ‘You go,’ ‘No, you go,’ ‘You throw your sh-t down, I throw my sh-t down’ — there was no competitive streak to it at all.”

His sex symbol status: “I never take that for granted. It’s kind of an amazing thing. There’s lots of theories about it. It’s kind of extraordinary — the majority of the [fans] are really intelligent, sweet, supportive, funny … you know, it’s a tease. The thing of being public property is slightly odd. Nice people respect my privacy. It’s a really weird contradiction in terms of, we require an audience for a professional life and we require some kind of privacy or, you know, lack of attention in our private life.”

His sexiest role: “As Agent Classified [in Penguins of Madagascar]. I had a really good scene, though I think it’s been cut, where I danced with some animal and seduced them. No, that’s not true. I know that would make good copy, but it’s not true. He really fancies himself, which is deeply unsexy, in my opinion. But Richard III is incredibly sexy. And also Hamlet, to an extent. [Cumberbatch will play the latter role onstage in London in 2015.] He’s sort of pitched as squarely foul by the circumstances of the play, but something started I think maybe to happen with Ophelia. How far did that go?”

The other career path: “I didn’t necessarily want to be an actor. I toyed for a while with being a criminal barrister, until I realized that sort of at the point of no return that people were saying, ‘Go back now, because it was just as competitive, just as peripatetic, just as unpredictable, as a lifestyle, as a career choice, as career satisfaction.’ I would’ve loved the performance of court, the idea of persuading people, storytelling and all that. It parallels beautifully with acting, lots of frustrated, amateur dramatics going on in court all the time. I think lots of barristers literally perform in amateur dramatic societies and are very good actors. It’s a massive crossover.”

Why Sherlock doesn’t get laid: “He’s asexual. He doesn’t want any, and it’s very purposeful on his part. I think he’s been burnt in the past. I think he also realizes he can’t beat female intuition; he can’t. So to embroil himself where he might be enslaved through adoration or sexual desire or any kind of power or chemistry to do with love is too big a risk for him. That doesn’t make him gay, and it doesn’t make him asexual. It means he’s purposely abstaining for the sake of his craft. Not something I do.”

[From Vulture]

There’s a ton of stuff at the link that I couldn’t fit in. He loves to ski, and he’s been trying out some American slopes. He loves Shakespeare. He has funny moments with the paparazzi. Blah. As for his explanation of why Sherlock is asexual… I disagree. I don’t think Sherlock believes that he “can’t beat female intuition.” That doesn’t sound like Sherlock, that sounds like Bendy. Sherlock would think female intuition is a crock. Bendy probably has a goddess circle.

The Silence of Benedict is unnerving. What the hell is happening? I have a bad feeling about this…

    • Froop says:

Is it? It’s a few days after Christmas and he’s doing a Q&A in LA on the 4th of January. He’s probably on holiday.

    • scarf girl says:

Last BC comment of 2014: he needs to take the advice James Rhodes tweeted this morning. “Self confidence isn’t thinking they are all going to love me. It’s thinking ‘it’s all good no matter what they think. ‘ Subtle but big difference.”

As for an Octopus mash-up with the Otter’s family, well, funny how pictures only seem to happen with her family? Even if this train wreck is real, still interesting how there is silence on his side. From friends and family.

Happy New Year! Enjoy the speculation while I enjoy serious R&R.

    • MissMary says:

I wouldn’t worry. It’s a prevention tactic–media oversaturation would alienate Academy voters (and look bad this time of year–HW wants his stars to like they’re buttoned up and respectable, and being all over the effing place during the holidays doesn’t do that (but SEE ME LOOK I’M IN A HUGELY POPULAR TOURIST CHURCH BUT I AM SO PRIVATE does). Anyway. He’ll be in Palm Springs on Friday for the film fest, no doubt. Then the screening in LA for the SAG members. He’s not just doing Academy PR now–he’s working for the globes and sag awards. We’re on this rollercoaster til after noms, earliest, late February, latest.

      • moodgirl says:

There is a comment on SoGo about BC’s disappearing act, if people want to lay low they can. He hasn’t been seen or heard from in days which has to be by design – he doesn’t want to be seen right now. Which makes his church sighting in Edinburgh and running throught the city announcing himself with a bullhorn even more suspicious.

      • MissMary says:

BC definitely knows how to lay low… how often has he gone WEEKS without a singe pap shot or sighting even when he’s openly in London? He typically avoids drawing attention to himself so definite side eye on the E’burg mess. Also makes me think his PR told him to chill for now because it was getting annoying.

    • Lucifer says:

What bad can happen??WEDDING?? He is cleverer than that

      • moodgirl says:

You have to admit that the two re-appearing as a married couple would be the talk of the award season. What an impact. HW would be proud.

      • Lucifer says:

YES. Read the spade anon on SoGo. she hit the NAIL on the head

      • gg says:

so you are on the real train, Lucifer???

      • Lucifer says:

        as real as Yeti

      • Mikasa says:

I’m not on the real train but I agree that there is some sort of relationship arrangement between the two. Just not romantic or we would have already seen sparks flying.
I wouldn’t be surprise of a wedding announcement next year, most likely in the times and exclusive pictures in People. But all that’s gonna tell me is proof of the showmance and how fake it all is.
I don’t wanna bring up an old topic but when the enGAG was announced I saw it tweet first by anythingbatch on twitter (also mostly retweeted from that account). It’s the only account which seems to consistently tweet news about BC everyday – so I believe that twitter is definitely PR.

      • gg says:

who the hell gets married for PR for *one* movie though? the only way a marriage would make sense is if somebody is bearding and I don’t buy that BC is gay, at all

      • **sighs** says:

Re: they have some sort of relationship past….
        *crazy theory alert*
I wonder if he agreed to the PR thing (I’m still complete PR train) and agreed to it with her. She looks great on paper, right status, right connections, right interests. They’ve worked together before. Maybe he had a little crush on her from whatever they worked on together. He figures he can get some (I do think he’s more narcissistic than we think he is) and do PR + get the crazies off his back. Kill 3 birds with one stone.
Perhaps he tried to have more than a business arrangement with her and she balked. And that hurt his pretty little feelings, hence the pissybatch act. That’s why he shows no affection, and she still tries to play the game, ie strained neck leaning, draping.
You will never convince me this is true love 4evah.

      • Ingrid says:

sighs, could be. But to be honest, this mess could be the result of any number of things. But true love 5vah it ain’t.

I think KB was the original PR GF or one of the options they rolled out. If you remember, she got enormous amount of hate after Monaco. Maybe she said “no f*cking way” after that and erased BC from her life or PR though she didn’t suit because she was so hated? Fan reaction to SH was “meh” so they decided to go with her? Or she was game? IDK

But what do you think HW though about Ben’s RIII gig? I bet BC was told to keep Sep-Feb free and he didn’t. This might also be HW’s payback to disobedient Benny. Harvey was most likely fuming when he found out his golden boy wouldn’t have time to campaign.

      • Lucifer says:

What was the deal with KB though?? I was prepping for Sem @ that time. Don’t know much..can u good ppl educate me?

      • Ingrid says:

Lucifer – Lady K and BC were in the same place at the same time a lot during the spring (Cabin Pressure recording, Windsor Castle, Pub Quiz, were there others?) and two weeks before FO she was with BC, Adam and Nick Whatshisname (?) in Monaco F1. Fans got crazy, posted all kinds of nonsense to her twitter /instagram and after that she deleted all BC pics and she was never seen again. After FO she also deleted SH’s pic (captioned “my beautiful friend” or something) from her IG.

        That’s all I know.

Maybe there was something going on and she got scared? Maybe they were just friends and she still got scared? Maybe she was the original PR girl and realized his nanny fans are crazy-crazy. Who knows?

IMO she’s quite off-putting as well. Seems very, very high-maintenance, superficial and mean based on her tweets. But at least she has done *something* unlike our Super Sophie.

BTW, the KB-SH timeline points very strongly towards this whole thing being PR. BC would *never* take a girl on a first (or some early) date to such a public place. He would keep it private until he knows it is more long term.

      • KT says:

@Ingrid–I’d buy Weinstein being furious with him over Richard. His leads normally campaign straight through for months without filming.

      • Felice says:

        @Ingrid

That’s honestly just the fashion industry for you so I give her personality a pass. She seems more devoted and stable. Also fun if you have the same common interests.

      • moodgirl says:

KB is pretty and could have been the original award season arm candy girl but something happened there and happened real quick. Maybe she considered the job beneath her or didn’t need the bump in marketing status – or maybe she didn’t like the idea of being dropped after the season was over.

Also, there was too little time between KB and SH, what was it a few weeks between the drop of KB and the pick up of SH? It really supports the idea of BC shopping for an award season gf and the fakeness with SH. There’s no logical way they got that far that fast unless he was really hard up.

  2. olly says:

Just too much. Reading Cumberbatch posts and the ensuing avalanche of comments makes me feel uneducated, unintelligent, every each working class, not a devoted enough sherlock fanatic ( which I love by way) and completely unimformed about the world.

I just want to sit in a corner with taylor swift cat lady stories. So soothing in comparison.

    • moodgirl says:

Then why read them? Why click on a subject then complain about it? There’s always Kim K. if it makes you feel better.

  3. ellesbelles says:

I laughed out loud in the theatre when Classified says pengwings. It happens a couple of times in the film. It kind of felt like an inside joke for Otter fans

  4. Claire says:

Oh Benedict, your engagement bs can’t beat my female intuition either

  5. Sixer says:

I thought Sherlock was just too busy working out how to land on a comet to get laid, which is why he never gets laid. It’s all about the deferred gratification.

Next series will be all about him badmouthing Philae. Obvs.

  6. Sixer says:

Ignore. Was replying to a now-deleted comment. Get rid of this one if you like cos it just looks dafty now!

  7. InvaderTak says:

What in the word is he taking about with the dance with Fassy quotes? God he sounds pretentious. Hopefully that’s the fault of it being print but honestly, I’m about our of hope.

  8. PunkyMomma says:

Benny and Sophie have as much chemistry together as a pair of Barbie and Ken dolls.

  9. Alice says:

Just could ‘t resist, huh? Gave us a Christmas present of a picture with OP, but now infesting the lead with pictures of the robot.

  10. **sighs** says:

The “particularly blatant fan photographer” story just made him sound like a douchebag. I get that you like your privacy *snort*, but people are going to get sneaky pics of you sometimes. And sometimes, people really are just on their phone, aren’t taking pics of you, and don’t give a rat’s @$$ about you.

    • Ingrid says:

He really needs to get a sense of humor about this sh*t. God.

I said this before and I’ll say it again:

They are cameras, not guns, Benedict! Things could be a lot worse. Also, if you are blabbing about your private life to every f*cking reporter who will listen, you can’t demand privacy. You gave up that right on Nov 5.

      • Oh Hey says:

“The thing of being public property is slightly odd. Nice people respect my privacy. It’s a really weird contradiction in terms of, we require an audience for a professional life and we require some kind of privacy or, you know, lack of attention in our private life.”
THIS. I personally try to put myself in the place of someone who is out, on his own time, and constantly being filmed, photog’d, watched, stared at, it would drive me mental, especially if it wasn’t a work situation. He’s nice as he can be to fans on press lines, etc. but why should he put up with being available to anyone and everyone who wants something from him when he’s not working. You wouldn’t photograph a complete stranger, which he is since most people don’t know him, so why is it OK to invade privacy and space? I’d be macing people left and right…

      • **sighs** says:

No, I don’t think people have a right to invade his privacy. It must suck. However, it’s going to come with the territory. His parents were both actors. He’s known the perks and pitfalls since he could walk and talk. He can’t control what other people do in public, but he can control his attitude about it.

Obviously he didn’t seem amused by this encounter since the guy was persistently denying he was filming him. He said he was rushing out of a car to get to a concert. But he had enough awareness while he was rushing along that this guy was filming him? And what if he really wasn’t taking his pic? What if he really was talking on the phone? You really can’t tell nowadays the way people use their phones. Is he going to interrogate every person who he thinks is taking his picture?
And obviously, people do take pictures of random strangers. Peopleofwalmart wouldn’t exist if they didn’t! 🙂

      • KT says:

He reads amused to me, like he thought the whole thing was funny. Of course the guy denied it, it’s rude as hell.

Some celebs yell at people, at least he’s having a bit of fun with it. Probably what I would do to make it feel less weird LOL.

      • moodgirl says:

@sighs – Totally agree. I am beginning to think that BC has been misjudged by his fans all these years. The BC that we thought we knew doesn’t exist. This is the real him, a pretentious a**hole who really does belong with SH. We ridicule her but in reality they really are twin jerks. This is why he won’t let her go.

      • KT says:

An actor becoming their true self during an Oscar campaign?

        Incredibly unlikely.

      • moodgirl says:

Pretentiousness started last summer when TIG was picked up. He just can’t help himself.

      • KT says:

Oh, I’m sure he’s pretentious; hell, I admit I can be myself.

Campaigns are usually run 8 months to 1 year before the Oscars. Since TIG was picked up in February, his campaign groundwork was laid by late February/early March already.

Terrible year to be stuck with Weinstein. The man had no wins last year and all his other ‘sure’ bets have sunk, and he’s sunk $20 million+ into this already. But going through a hard campaign and losing isn’t necessarily a bad experience for an actor, at least.

      • gg says:

Not to mention that Weinstein lost his Oscar miracle worker Taback!

    • j says:

nah it sounded like the guy was filming him at first, you notice that lol.

at least he seemed amused instead of having a will Ferrell moment 🙂

  11. EscapedConvent says:

Here we go again with the CumberDoubleSpeak. It used to irritate me, but now it strikes me funny. (Apparently I am passing through the Kubler-Ross stages at an accelerated rate.)

He begins comments about Sherlock not getting laid with “He’s asexual.” A couple of sentences later, ReverseBatch says: “It doesn’t make him asexual….”

I wonder if Sophie has really thought this through—she may not get a word in edge-wise for a long, long time.

    • j says:

it’s like he’s always got two sides of a convo going on inside his head

    • Green Eyes says:

Girl doesn’t need to speak – she need only communicate via floral dresses and thrashing amongst cephalopod molluscs.

      • EscapedConvent says:

True. If you can communicate as well as she does through whispering in French with an electronica background, why bother with normal speech?

Seriously, I think it’s very weird that she doesn’t speak. Doesn’t anyone ever address her on a red carpet? She just stands there. I realize he talks enough for several people on double espressos, but why doesn’t she talk?

      • Ingrid says:

^^ Only the person who is promoting things gives interviews on RC. It’s very unusual for SOs to give any red carpet interviews (unless it’s Oscars and even then they just stand and look pretty and tell the reporters who they are wearing).

But for some reason, I think she will open her mouth in no time… Unless HW is smarter than that and won’t let microphone near her. If she is able to embarrass BC even without saying anything, I can’t imagine the sh*tstorm if Sodious actually opens her mouth.

    • moodgirl says:

Sophie will be too busy spending his money to notice.

    • Kiddo says:

I absolutely love Cumberbunches of Cumberbatch posts. I drank the CumberCaiserCool ade.

  12. Mikasa says:

    *sigh*
I felt a need to comment the second I saw a Cumberbatch thread and realized I have nothing to say!
I have reached the point where I’ve said all I need to.

My new years wish is that these two find that something missing in their relationship and work towards rebuilding a connection, if not then I wish both would come to their senses and realized they are not meant for each other.

Enjoy the last days of 2014 everyone!!

  13. **sighs** says:

I love how the penguins are built into the stipes in the background of that first pic.

  14. Madly says:

Why did tom hiddleston and Susanna break up?

Sorry, wanted to interject something that was actually interesting.

    • 'P'enny says:

Oh god that’s old news 😜 I’m more interested about why the paps stalking tom burton & Helena bc over Christmas didn’t get one shot of Hiddles? He must of being hiding under his hoody😳

      • **sighs** says:

Can I hide under his hoody?

      • Madly says:

I know, just have heard conflicting things about it, like she broke up with him, but she also tweeted bitterish things about it.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Probably off visiting his parents at their respective homes or peeking through the shades to make sure the path was clear before venturing out of his house.

      • 'P'enny says:

The stalkers spotted him a couple of times but it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s under the duvet sleeping or watching box sets & hoping no one knocks – that would be me anyway. Conserving strength for when joss & his buddies come knocking with his leathers & wig shouting ‘Loki?? ‘ put kettle on

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, true. He’s probably back in Loki gear next week.

      • icerose says:

stalkers or I want my 10 minutes of internet attention???My guess is that he headed home to mum and some home cooking. But when the Marvel gang show up the paps will be out in force,
I have to say the biggest bit that hit me in the above is his sudden love of Shakespeare which really apart from a year in theatre in the park at the beginning of his career has been some what lacking both in performances and interviews,
But I guess he will be hearing more about his love of the Bard once the Oscar campaign is finished and Turing is just a memory.

      • jammypants says:

What did his ex say about him on twitter?

As for Ben and Shakespeare, it struck me the same way, ice. Maybe I don’t follow Ben enough, but I never got the impression he is a huge Shakespeare fan. Because of that impression, I took his recent interest as…pendants to add onto his acting lapel. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s a bit self-aggrandizing. I could very well be wrong, however.

      • j says:

he used to mention shakespeare before a lot but tbh it hasn’t come up as much since Sherlock except for hamlet, he’s talked about hamlet for freaking years. people don’t ask questions like that anymore.

oh, he’s done Shakespeare audio books too. tempest, seven ages of man, etc.

      • icerose says:

@j can you point me to some interviews as I have never seenany where he talks about Shakespeare up until now.. I think most actors do audio speeches/poems at some point partly because it is bread and butter work and partly because it looks good on your CV but he has never actually appeared in a Shakespeare performance on TV or stage until the recent resurgence in Shakepeare’s popularity. To me he is trying to add Shakepeare to his CV to give him more credibility as he ages not because he actively sort out opportunities in his early stages of his career,
If you look at Tennant he was doing stints at the RSC before Who propelled him to fame.

      • J says:

im kinda surprised you’re asking, icerose, i figured you can’t stand him

i dont think i can link here (?) but he was babbling about hamlet back 3 years ago in the telegraph, richard the ii too but that’s going back further (TR).

he has appeared in shakespeare on stage, not sure why you think he didn’t? love labours lost, midsummer nights dream, etc. he actually started out professionally in shakespeare.

    • Green Eyes says:

I am so into Hiddles now. Just watched Unrelated and just fell for Youthful Hids. The one big problem with the film (aside from it being a snoozefest)? That Hids never got down and dirty with that older woman. I kept waiting for it (wait for it! Wait for it!). But nothing. Nada.

One big effin’ tease, that Hiddles!

      • Madly says:

He is kind of a breath of fresh air from pissy batch right now.

      • 'P'enny says:

I’m watching youthful benedict in the ‘ends of the earth’ god he’s boring in it. His sexy scene in a white shirt was as wooden as Wooden ship. Bit disapointed in him really.

      • InvaderTak says:

BC in ‘Fortysomething’ with Hugh Laurie is pretty good. But I agree, Ends was a snoozefest. Babybatch was actually pretty funny.

      • Lu says:

Babybatch was adorable and funny in “Fortysomething.” It was the first thing I really noticed him in, having watched it for Hugh Laurie to begin with. He had an unusual presence for a young actor; can’t put my finger on the quality I noticed, but part of it was his odd face and maturity (which I now know is because he was actually playing quite a bit younger than he was, but it was the age BC looked at the time 🙂 ) And then I saw his name in the credits and was like, “really? that’s that young guy’s name?” Seemed so Dickensian.

      • icerose says:

Baby Hiddles is one glorious sexy tease in Unrelated but he matches it with the angry confrontation with his Dad which really catches that listening at doors embarrassment which is so very British.

      • MtnRunner says:

I haven’t seen anything Hiddles has done that I haven’t liked. Usually everyone has something they’ve done I can’t stand. I hope that doesn’t change with everything coming out next year…

    • MtnRunner says:

Hiddles, the one that has been dubbed the male Anne Hathaway actually managed to avoid photogs after leaving LAX last week. Ben, who seems to hate being photographed by the hoi polloi, pops up at a major tourist site in Edi. Which one’s the try hard now?

Saw TIG and imo, it’s way overrated. BC and KK are good in it, but the movie itself doesn’t deserve to be the top 5 of any best picture list. Cheesy, laughable dialog at times and strayed from the real story. After seeing TIG and Unbroken back to back — there’s no comparison between the two. Angie wins hands down. It is the only movie that would give Boyhood a run for its money on Best Picture.

      • InvaderTak says:

Is Unbroken that good? I’ve heard conflicting reviews.

      • Madly says:

I haven’t seen unbroken, but it looks so baity. I wonder why it is getting mostly ignored this award season. That can change with box office results though.

      • j says:

really? I’ve heard a lotta meh on Unbroken, and it’s now rotten at 51% at RT

        I really liked TIG though

i dont get the endless th/bc comparison? they can both be try hards, it depends on what they’re up to, like most actors. they’ve both gotten dragged for it

      • blended says:

now you’re full of it. unbroken has not been getting glowing reviews. give boyhood a run? dream on.

      • MtnRunner says:

@blended, have you seen Unbroken or are you just going off of reviews? If you have, tell me why you think it’s bad instead of telling me I’m full of shit.

I honestly don’t understand why it would get panned. I went in expecting to be underwhelmed and I came out thinking I’d just seen a Best Picture winner. I missed Boyhood when it was out, but I expect to love it based on what I’ve read about it. I hope it will be released so I can compare the two films.

I’m curious as to why Unbroken isn’t getting high marks across the board. It stayed true to the story (unlike TIG), dialog wasn’t cheesy (unlike TIG). the acting was good (not award winning, but not bad) and it was incredibly inspirational. People were cheering at the end, they were so moved by Louis’ story. I know the screenwriters had to leave out some pieces of the story because it would have bogged the movie down, but they didn’t “hollywood it up” like TIG to make it more interesting.

I came out of TIG wishing feeling like I’d missed the real story. As I dug a little deeper, realized I had. It was a typical Hollywood drama, nothing award winning. Now, I’m wanting to see a good documentary so I can the real story of Turing’s life and how Enigma was broken by the team of cytologists and engineers from numerous countries. The true story is fascinating enough as it is and I just wish I’d gotten more of that from the film.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Unbroken is a good film, not groundbreaking by any means but few films are. It is decently acted and tells an involving story. The same can be said of TIG and TTOE

      • icerose says:

@MtnRunner Have you watched Breaking the Code on You Tube-it it is less flashy, slower but and Jacobi plays him more like a normal human being and less like some socially awkward genius. It also captures the social norms of the times with out pushing the modern insights,
My bet is on Birdland or Boyhood. I think the only reason TIG is getting any nominations is because of the PR buzz which has been created around it and if it does win it says more about the Oscar process than the quality of the film.

There is an interesting article about BC’s fan invasion during the film Black Mass in an interview by one of the actors in Black Mass. Sounds way worse than ISTL
        http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/entertainment/film-tv/news/edgerton-amazed-by-cumberbatch-fans-30867497.html

      • MtnRunner says:

Thanks icerose, I didn’t know that it was on you tube. I’d heard good things about it and will add it to my growing queue of things to watch.

I’d be putting my money on Boyhood even though I haven’t seen it yet. It comes out of DVD next week — yea! I really think it’s been a great year for films. I’ve finally seen all the ones on my list and just waiting for Selma and Turner to hit my local theaters in the next week or so.

I’m also enjoying all the Hollywood Sessions videos too. Have you seen them? Saw the Lead Actor one yesterday with Keaton and RDJ sitting in the Big Boys seats and currently watching the Supporting Actor one in which JK Simmons and Ed Norton are dishing out their wisdom. So good!

      • Lu says:

@icerose, thanks for mentioning “Breaking the Code.” I bring it up every once in a while in Turing discussions because it was so well known in its time and it annoys me that Cumbers and everyone who’s into promoting TIG acts as if it’s the first recognition the Turing story has ever gotten. It seems as though Cumby wants to take credit for resurrecting Alan Turing’s reputation, though I don’t really think those are his intentions.

      • KT says:

        @Lu:

Well, they’re promoting their movie, so that is natural, and Breaking the Code was barely a blip on the radar in the US. That being said, Cumberbatch has actually mentioned Jacobi/Breaking the Code repeatedly. Unsure about the rest of the cast.

I didn’t care for the recorded version of Breaking the Code at all, would have loved to see the play.

      • Maggie says:

        @ KT

I am very late to these posts but yes Benedict has referenced Breaking The Code and Jacobi in many interviews about TIG. I imagine that many of the cast were not as aware of the play or the TV version but they are promoting TIG not alternate versions from years ago.

    • InvaderTak says:

While we’re threadjacking with things that are actually intersting/cute: BuzzF. has a 50 gif collection of Lee Pace. It’s fabulous. More LP in the new year!

    • Anne tommy says:

I think someone should ask Tom H to say penguins so we can compare them in that department too. Am still annoyed about a reference to Hiddles on another website – a website which can be quite unpleasant in various ways – as “Weaselface Bigballs”. Urgh. Better than “Weaselface Smallballs” I suppose. Back to Bendy If I must…the last episode of his bbc radio 4 sitcom “Cabin Pressure” has aired, I enjoyed it, though the level of young female audience appreciation was noticeably higher than in most bbc radio sitcoms. Well worth a listen.

  15. j says:

oh, this is old, from the november crabapple junket

did he fall off the face of planet earth?

  16. Madly says:

Ok, let’s play a game. Which actor(s) do you think would cheat on their girlfriend: otter king, dragonfly lord, Fassbender, and Orlando bloom?

You are welcome for all there games.😉

    • Lucifer says:

      MF. He is SOOOO bangable.

      • Madly says:

Yeah, and he knows it. Dang, looking at that list, I should have said which of these names doesn’t belong here, lol

      • Lucifer says:

his lips make me think sinful thoughts 😛

      • HBIC says:

I’m voting Otter King. Not saying Octopussy deserves to be cheated on, but with the way he looks at her, I’m pretty sure that’s what would do behind her back (when he’s not being watched like a hawk). Sad, sad, sad.

    • icerose says:

There is already unsubstantiated evidence that Tom did cheat on Susannah in America unless they were on an agreed break.

      • jammypants says:

First I ever heard this one.

      • icerose says:

@jammy pants -it was rumoured he went out with Denning’s around the time of Thor 1 when he was still linked up with Susannah unless they were on a break at the time.

  17. Tulip says:

To play devil’s advocate: Did anyone get their photo snapped this past Christmas morning and posted to Facebook, without makeup and without consent?

I’ll give him a pass on this latest complaint of lack of privacy for the sake of the season.

    • icerose says:

half the people on my facebook feed have pictures posted without makeup, out living it up giving or giving consent and they do not care that much- -it is not such a big thing these days.

  18. Lucifer says:

Why the couple pictures?? This interview does not even mention the GAG?WHY?

  19. RobN says:

I used to like him, but the way he panders to his female fans makes me a little sick. The fake flattery is always so over the top. I can see it working on a lovesick 15 year old, but not much beyond that.

    • moodgirl says:

He believes his fan base is comprised of lovesick 15 year olds.

      • MissMary says:

I’m sure that’s what his people have convinced him is the case.

      • Felice says:

It’s hard to say if he’s personally looking at it or if his people are looking at it and tell him to act accordingly. Probably the latter. It just seems like he’s aware since he and TWILTWIPT seem to adjust their behavior accordingly. Down to handholding possibly. There was a comment that they never lace their fingers and then boom. Coincidence possibly though.

  20. Lilacflowers says:

Did he read a different version of Shakespeare’s Richard III than I did? This is the second time I’ve read him refer to Richard III as “sexy.” Shakespeare’s Richard III is NOT sexy.

    • 'P'enny says:

Lol I think he realises he needs female viewers on his side because tom Sturridge gets all the fans for hollow crown 2. Lol

      • Lilacflowers says:

Some female viewers prefer their Shakespeare characters as is.

      • Lu says:

Some female viewers actually read, watch, and appreciate Shakespeare, Ben. We don’t need it sexed up or spun by you to get us interested.

      • MtnRunner says:

After saying Dick 3 is sexy, I’m not looking forward to Ben’s portrayal of him. What is it with Bendy in trying to prove to everyone he’s sexy? He’s sexiest when he’s not trying.

Ben, you were the accidental superstar, the atypical sex symbol, remember?? When you try too hard, you just look ridiculous.

    • Lucifer says:

He reads a separate version of everything.. 😀

      • Lilacflowers says:

        He’s a special little snowflake, isn’t he?

      • **sighs** says:

        ❄️

      • A says:

Should fit right in here then, ha!

That being said, people do find RIII in Shakespeare sexy. Check out the Telegraph’s “Richard III and the lost art of creating truly wicked villains”

      • Lu says:

He also seems confused by the plot and characterizations in “Hamlet.”

“something started I think maybe to happen with Ophelia. How far did that go?”

        Ya think, Einstein?

      • InvaderTak says:

@ Lu: Not Einstein, Turing remember? And I gotta wonder if that quote makes Hiddles cry lol

    • icerose says:

Richard 111 can be sexy if played by an actor with a natural sexuality /sensual presence which is not Benny, I think Anthony Sher was a quite sexy in pictures of his Richard 111, Aidan McArdle who played him at a younger age. I bet Brannagh’s Richard 111 had sex appeal.Mind you if you base your Richard 111 interpretation on the White Queen then he was a regular pretty boy matinee idol.
It is easier with Hamlet is easier to play up the sexuality because he slips into the young ,confused hero bracket, I do hope Tom plays him before he gets to old because I do prefer younger Hamlets.

      • InvaderTak says:

I thought David Tennant’s Hamlet was very good. Just the right amount of everything; drama, conflict, sexy.

      • Felice says:

He was honestly everything the New Doctor should be too. I miss him.

      • icerose says:

@Invader yes I would like to see Tennants although if I remember the reviews were mixed, I would really have liked to see Ben Whishaw’s Hamlet and Rory Kinnear’s was pretty good as well,
Maxine Peake was interesting as a very young androgynous Hamlet but not brilliant.

  21. MtnRunner says:

A bit off-topic, but Boyhood is getting released on DVD Jan 6th.

  22. mel says:

    Richard III is sexy.

Especially when played by that beautiful Welsh boy, Aneurin Barnard. Whew, getting all flustered and hot in here. I think I’ll get back to work now.

    • 'P'enny says:

That was a special richard 3rd, aneurin (can’t spell names) was so pretty & devilish. I also recommend Sharon ?? Somebody’s Sunne in Splendour for a compassionate richard 3rd. But end if day he was a clever manipulative king 😜

    • icerose says:

Yes but the White Queen was is primetime mainstream TV fodder not Shakespeare and they picked the actors for their pretty boy looks not because of their ability to manage complex text or depth and subtlety,
Mark Rylance gives a mesmerising performance as Richard 111 both engaging your sympathy and trust whilst despising the part he plays in the murders leading to his taking over the throne. The slanging matches between him and Elizabeth have you clapping mid scene.

      • mel says:

I just like the actual idea of R III, pretty boys make it more pleasant, yes. Historically speaking though, I’m fascinated. I can’t get enough.

      • icerose says:

@Mel The White Queen was enjoyable but not in the same league acting wise as some of the BBC dramas and Shakepeare’s Richard 111.

      • mel says:

Oh, the White Queen was crap.

My location in the world prevents me from enjoying well acted Shakespeare. I’m pretty much limited to high school plays.

  23. Angie says:

Come to say hi ; )

      Oh, I’m hoping…

      • Ingrid says:

        ITA.

The wedding planning quote is my absolute favorite, so self-centered, so out of place and so late.

“And planning my wedding. Which I’m doing in my sleep” <— he admitted he isn't actually doing it. Translating that sentence to a human language "Harvey told me to mention the wedding planning, but who am I kidding? I don't have time to do that. Everyone knows that." LOL.

  25. scout says:

BENDY MAN is classy, sexy (OMG! Can’t believe I said it!) and a very cool Pen-Wing! Why oh Why did I watch The Imitation game, it’s all my husband’s fault. Now I hate Sophie! Not…

  26. lunchcoma says:

Ugh, “female intuition.” I’m sure Moffat believes in such a thing, but I’d hope Cumberbatch knows better. It’s one of those tokens like “chivalry.” Sure, men are promoted as being smarter, more capable, more logical, more decisive, and so on, but we women have this magical ability called “intuition” that’s somehow only useful in situations where it won’t give us too much power.

    • jammypants says:

I think intuition is both a compliment and insult coming from men. Compliment because they are amazed women understand a lot more than they give us credit for. Insult because they can’t attribute that to pure intellect, no, not with women, since we are all about the feels, man.

  27. Jessica says:

Sherlock knows he can’t beat “female intuition”? No. Absolutely no. Sherlock is hyper logical, which means he would scoff at any emotion-based idea of intellect. “female intuition” is entirely based on emotion. If a woman claimed “female intuition” to Sherlock he would tell her in no uncertain terms exactly why she’s an idiot.

Also, Benefict contradicted himself in that answer. He said “Sherlock is asexual”, then in the same paragraph said “that doesn’t make Sherlock asexual”.

    • jammypants says:

Ben has foot in mouth syndrome

    • j says:

      um…it’s actually reading nonverbal cues.

it’s a ‘myth’ that’s based in reality, and we are better at that due to society crap (we’re used to scrutinizing men in positions of power)

    • icerose says:

Yes classic Benny talking without his brain in gear and just proves the man would not have had the brains or grades from the sound of it to become a barrister,

    • icerose says:

One theory of intuition says is a form of processing non semantic information like body language and past episodes linked to sensory perception and experience. Consequently we see the result in a non semantic format i.e. instinct but it is still based on intelligent processing we are just not aware of it,

  28. Ingrid says:

Just watched the entire Hollywood Sessions video. (The one with RDJ’s “eye roll” <–it wasn't an eye roll, but you know what I mean). THR's round table was better but I'm Timothy Spall fan…

BC's body language is all over the place during the enGAGment part. It wasn't so obvious when it was just the clip but boy, when you compare how he is during the entire hour video, massive difference. He's one finger away from trying to swallow his whole fist (which would have been a wise decision.)

    • Lucifer says:

Ingrid. Thanks for the kb post. I saw the Monaco gp live and was thinking why was this lady always behind him. Maybe the heels. Lol. Those were simpler times. Looking at her twitter and instagram she seems like a working woman 👩 with a good career. Unlike Ursula. I think she would have been a better choice for an arm candy for award season

      • moodgirl says:

        Delete, wrong place.

      • Lucifer says:

was on phone. did not realize. Whatever she ll understand 😀

      • Ingrid says:

Lucifer, I think moodgirl meant her own post 🙂 and you are welcome.

Kinvara is and stays on my sh*tlist (I have very little sympathy for fashion industry people) but at least she’s working and trying to make her own living, unlike SH. And if she was the original choice for this sham, I do respect her for walking away. So two points for KB, zero for SH.

      • Lucifer says:

u’re right. Her being independent was a big positive point for me..happy new yr in adv 🙂

    • Toodles45 says:

@ingrid, I’m glad you said that. He looked…anxious (?) when he was explaining why he did it, almost like he was making excuses for it (who knows, but his body language was *definitely* weird). I noticed it immediately.

    • icerose says:

The Timothy Spall one was quite good in the end thanks to Spall, Redmayne and Ethan Hawke who managed to turn it into a conversation as opposed to a more obvious PR exercise. I did like Keaton as well for his honest cynicism.

    • icerose says:

just watched all of the Hollywood sessions video with RDJ and thought it was very good. Micheal Keaten is interesting and I love Caroll’s and Redmayne’s honesty. It focussed a littke bit to much on the American films bit TIG and TOE got to bites at the apple so it worked itself around.

    • InvaderTak says:

RE: the EPIX HW sessions roundtable: Why was RDJ there? He wasn’t even that good in the movie or the interview. He had a couple of good discussion points and he has to go and put on that stupid persona. And the Joker suit was ugly. Ed and BC were just meh. Maybe it’s because I’m so over biopics that I don’t care what they say about their roles. And I forgot that ED and BC have both played Hawking. (Why are we doing multiple biopics on people who are still alive?) Steve Carrell and MK owned this roundtable. I loved what he had to say about not wanting to give up all of his acting process in interviews. They should have just talked amoungst themselves.

      • Felice says:

Biopics are kinda the thing now since the big name screenwriters have no ideas and people aren’t going through the bloated archives of The Black List to find some original fiction.

      • InvaderTak says:

@felice: Biopics are just lazy IMO, especially the Hawking ones. How do adults in the western world not at least know his name? Doing a Turing biopic I can understand a little better, but 2 movies on Hawking in the past decade? That’s even more lazy. Lame lame lame.

      • MtnRunner says:

InvaderTak, did you see the HW sessions supporting actor video? It was also very good. I love how Ruffalo, Simmons and Brolin talk about the importance of being present for their families.

To be fair, BC’s Hawking was only for BBC TV and Eddies was a film with worldwide release with specific attention to his relationship with Jane. My pet peeve with biopics is when they f**k a lot with the original story or characterizations to make it more “interesting”. If it wasn’t interesting to begin with, don’t pour $$$ into a friggin’ movie on it.

      • icerose says:

@Invader Turing has been a play and a TV film so it is just as clichés as Hawkings remake, The new Hawkins gives a more minute look at a specific time in his life.
Bio’s can be really interesting and give insights into a person’s life reflected by the time period they lived in, The first time I watched the TV version of Turing I was so intrigued I went on to find out more about the gay politics around that time,
It does however depend on the quality of the script and how it is innovatively it is filmed.

I liked the way Keating countered RDJ’s statemen re non preparation and method process’s. As someone who studied drama I am always fascinated by this side of things but also understand that an actor might need to hold some of it back as the process can be very personal. So both Carol and Keating made good points but Eddie’s comments about watching rushes was interesting as well and how it can both help/hinder the performance.

  29. solanaceae (Nighty) says:

I love the marry yourself kit on CNN .. “With this ring, I wed me”.. Check it out!!

  30. jammypants says:

I used to like him so much. The more he opens his mouth, the less so. Just keep acting and don’t do interviews Ben!

    • MtnRunner says:

True dat, jammy. His disingenuity has diminished his appeal.

    • moodgirl says:

I saw him on Hollywood Buzz and I just tuned him out. Total turnoff. I wonder if he will have any fans left after this is over or will it be just the nannies.

      • MtnRunner says:

I was relieved that the Hollywood Sessions Lead Actor session focused more on Keaton, RDJ and Carell since they brought so humor and wisdom to the discussion. Pre-engagement, I would have been disappointed that Ben didn’t get more airtime. Now, I listen to him with a hairy eyeball locked in place.

      • Felice says:

I saw the trailer for Foxcatcher in theaters finally (not much for going on youtube for trailers unless someone tells me to) and omg I can’t believe that’s Steve Carell. I wish that he got more steam for that role from what it seems to be.

      • MtnRunner says:

Felice, Foxcatcher is a downer, but Steve and Mark are really, really good in it. Taters is too, but I was particularly impressed with the other two. In the video I mentioned above, Carell said he flew home on the weekends to get away from the somberness of the film to enjoy time with his family and that helped him last through the four month shoot.

I made sure to see it in the afternoon when there was still sunlight it was over I had something fun to do afterwards. I didn’t want to go straight to bed with all that sadness on the brain.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Steve Carrell was amazing and unrecognizable, not only in his face but the entire way he carried himself and presented himself, in Foxcatcher.

      • icerose says:

I though RDJ was good at times but tends to hide behind his iron man type cynicism-but great that he called the interviewer out on the comment about being so attached to Iron Man. RDJ use to be an exciting actor but I do think he has lost it as he has got older, i loved him in Chaplin and even in Ally McBeaL and Air America anD some of the other little indie films I have seen on TV.

  31. lindy79 says:

No new years honours for him despite reports (unless i missed it). Im actually glad, it would have seemed cheap or bought in some way this year.

    • 'P'enny says:

i am surprised he didn’t get an OBE either, especially as he has been doing his networking with the Prince W this year. However, he did pull out of a special theatre performance earlier this year for Queenie and that might not have gone down well :-p

To be fair, Benny has done some good charity stuff and if he keeps that up, he will be knighted soon enough.

Above all, i am in awe of John Hurt, the hell raiser has turned good and really packing in the acting jobs and even being alive to be honest is well and truly a miracle. Go Sir John.

      • Felice says:

Honestly I know he will get an honor someday but people need to really stop believing everything they read. It gets really annoying and starts a game of telephone but no Beyonce, which is a travesty.

      • icerose says:

but he has not done more than a lot of actors like Bill Nighy and Ewan McGregor who are just as deserving. If he and Eddie had got it I think it would have been for all the wrong reasons. I would like to see them get honoured for their work when they have a body of work equivalent to some of the other Brit actors who have yet to be on the honours list

      • 'P'enny says:

Ewan was awarded OBE last year and Bill Nighy turned his down.

      • icerose says:

@P’enny should have known Nighy turned it down -love that man.
But I still think it is early days for BC and R who have not really had time to build up either a body of work or charity work. To be honest it kInd of annoys that they give the charity award to actors when there are far more hardworking people involved iN charities who have not got a famous name to help shine the spotlight on them.

    • lindy79 says:

I dont believe everything i read about him but his name was mentioned along with a few who actually did get honoured and he does do charity work especially for the princes trust so it was quite possible he’d get it.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Knighthood for John Hurt (hip hip hooray! In the past year he played Marlowe in OLLA and was in Snowpiercer – awesome!) Dame Commander OBE to Kristen Scott Thomas! Officer of the OBE James Corden!

As far as doing charity work, get in line behind Ewan. Far, far, far behind Ewan.

      • Ingrid says:

Yay for Sir John and Dame Kristen! I was little surprised by James Corden (so soon?), but then again, he did win a Tony, didn’t he? And I do adore him.

BC will most likely get OBE or MBE after Oscar nom, definitely if he wins. But now would have been too soon. Knighthood when he’s 50+ .

(Did Mirror include him and Eddie as a click bait or was PR giving coy statements? We’ll never know)

      • Sixer says:

James Corden, I think, for doing a great deal with Comic Relief and for representing Britain abroad to the level of a Tony for One Man, Two Guvnors. Twitter isn’t impressed but then, Twitter isn’t what you’d call a high common denominator much of the time, is it? Corden meets the two main strands for actors: do charity stuff and represent Britain by getting (serious, rather populist) recognition abroad.

Penny – you don’t get to be a knight until you have worked your way up the honours. Benny’s looking at a minimum of twenty years before anything like that happens, if it ever does.

I was glad to see Jamal Edwards getting something. Minorities get something like 6% of awards, despite being 12% of the population.

      • icerose says:

Great news about Hurt-he is an amazing actor ,Not sure about Kristen Scott Thomas butt she has done some good work.
Corden is borderline but his work with comic relief is quite prominent and besides 1/2 governors he has one a lot of comedy awards including those for Gavin and Stacey which for which he is a writer as well. His work goes back to the original Oliver award winning History Boys as a youth at the National
And yes Redmayne and BC were PR/ clickbait

    • moodgirl says:

So, I wonder who’s PR put BC’s and ER’s names in the mix?

  32. chilicat says:

Sigh. I still love him. It makes me sad that he is coming over as a bit pretentious.
I’m sure he wasn’t like that before.
The whole fiancé business is interesting. they are certainly not tactile with each other or very affectionate. But I’m not either when im with my boyfriend in public. Although we have been together 11 years so maybe that’s not a great comparison. I just can’t believe it’s fake. It just seems so unnecessary to do this all for an Oscar.

  33. moodgirl says:

What happened to posters Nic and Kazlock?

    • Mikasa says:

…and Raven! I think she was the one who gave us the name of the woman sitting next to BC at the French Open. I’ve always wondered if there was a connection? I guess I was just surprised how anyone can recognize a no name actress so easily out of the blue, unless they know each other.

  34. tasha_nat says:

It’s weird, but when I used to read his interviews, I liked them, felt he was sassy, snarky, had a good head on his shoulders. Now I just skim interviews and shake my head at what a douchebag he is. He’s not saying anything different, but it’s like the tone has changed. I feel played.

  35. ukbound says:

You know I love you girls, but the only reason you don’t hate Kinvara is that it appears he is not with her. Everyone said she was a snob and mean before. Now it is “Oh, she’s not so bad, in retrospect”. I would rather he be with squid woman than stuck up her arse woman.

Not that I’m buying that he is in love with Sodious.

  36. Boredwithimdb says:

I agree UK bound. The fandom has turned batshit crazy ever since SH came on the scene. It’s like some fans are in the grip of some weird hysterical reaction to the fact that a 38 year old posh man has decided to marry a 36 year old posh woman. Seems like no view of the situation is acceptable unless its 100% positive or 100% negative and convinced its “all PR.”

I don’t particularly like SH, she comes across as very cold and snooty. But it seems much more logical to me that this is a real, if somewhat pragmatic and rushed, relationship between two people who are getting to the age where they want to settle down and decided to go for it.

It’s not the big disney romance some fans seemed to expect would happen for their Prince. But neither is there any genuine evidence to suggest it’s some Byzantine PR plot engineered by evil genius Harvey Weinstein.

Face it people BC found a suitable posh woman from his posh circle of friends and acquaintances and decided she was The Woman He Loves and To Who He’d Propose. It’s no more complicated than that.

    • Ingrid says:

Boredwithimdb (<— love your name. LOL): You might be right, we might be right, the Disney Love Story shippers might be right. We don't know, maybe even Benedict himself doesn't know what the hell is going on. So IMO no one can say "face it people, this is what it is".

Oh, and there will never be any genuine evidence for PR involvement. Except the fact that it was timed for PR and used in BC's narrative during the promo very heavily. And Harvey’s track record.

      • gg says:

We’ll never *know* there was PR involvement but mark my words, Benedict was laying the groundwork for the break-up when he did that “marriage is a miracle” interview where he talked about how amazing it was that he and Sophie had met because they were both “so busy.” There’s your break-up story right there.

      • Ingrid says:

gg – Yeah. I also wondered about his “not everyone can do that in their lifetime” (find a person they love) or something like that.

It’s a weirdly depressing and negative thing to say, almost like an insult to single people (I know it wasn’t, but you know what I mean), unless he was talking about himself. Which I think he was. People who have given up say things like that, people in love would say “It’s amazing, I hope everyone would find the person they love”. = Positive, life is wonderful, true love forever!

I know, splitting hairs, but I’ve never heard a newly engaged person speak like that.

      • MissMary says:

@gg: I’m willing to bet money on the break up “cause” being just that–“Oh, we were just so busy and wanted different things…”

@Ingrid: Remember some interview he had while still with OP where he said they both wanted children and marriage but not right then an not necessarily with one another? That’s how I knew he was on the way out of that relationship. Same with these statements–it’s the negative statements and the morose demeanor. He’s on his way out.

      • anon says:

Good post Ingrid. Another interesting tidbit on the RC (I believe it was Stompgate)- one of the other blogs (think it was Eggsy-apologies if I’m wrong) had some marvelous vids/info about PR and how to spot the fibber. Watch Ben talk about how wedding planning is going. He smiles and says “just fine”. Except that he’s nodding no! HUGE BOOYA! Moment for me.

      • Felice says:

Hi MissMary I missed you lol.

@anon That moment was so…..I can’t even describe.

    • Froop says:

The way you don’t seem to understand the importance of class or the posh factor makes me think you’re Fiona. It’s not irrelevant in this case. That’s how it works.

    • Froop says:

You might like to think we live a world where class doesn’t matter but it does and that’s just being realistic. When Wanda said she wanted Benedict to find someone ‘suitable’ she was not talking about 22 year old models, she was talking about someone from the Right Sort of family, which is exactly what SH is. It matters; just because you don’t want to think it does doesn’t make it magically vanish. There’s a reason why most of his friends are posho trust fund peerage kids. The Great and the Good of Downton still exist, but in a slightly different way than they did a hundred years ago. But that set still marry each other and mix within their own circle.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Froop, Wanda strikes me as a bit of a social climber so “suitable” was always going to have to be somebody posh, preferably in the peerage.

      • Sunflower says:

I do believe she has mentioned in interviews how her mother-in-law didn’t like her because she wasn’t posh enough. Pretty sure she’s not interested in having a posh daughter-in-law.

      • anon says:

Thank-you Sunflower. Wanda kinda threw some shade on her mil for looking down on her and Tim’s acting gigs (not playing posh).

    • Froop says:

That’s lovely Boo, but not how it works in real life. They mix with each other and don’t usually marry outside of the circle. They’ll be pleasant to your face but outsiders will never be part of their set. BC and SH are both in their little artsy fartsy set.
This is making me laugh because I have a funny feeling we have had this exact same conversation – with the same arguments on both sides over on Imdb.

  37. Camilla says:

But it’s not the real thing. It’s plain to see.

  38. Boredwithimdb says:

What do you mean by “the real thing?” That the relationship is fake? Or that they don’t really love each other? And how is it plain to see?

  39. Camilla says:

I don’t believe it’s a fake relationship. It’s a relationship but it’s not the real thing. Just look at the photographs etc. And the relationship is being used for PR.

  40. anon says:

OK-totally snarky and conspiracy theory time-they announce that they’ve sloped just as voting begins. They announce that the Cumberchild is on its way before it ends. Then we all start divorce watch, which will coincide with some other big award/event/whatever.
GG-this is not just one movie. This is Ben’s ticket to the “big table” that he wants to sit at with George and Brad (quote from old article). This is his shot at realizing his business plan (another old quote) withSunnymarch. The man is ambitious, driven, determined. He will do f**k all to realize his dreams.
I’m not 100% saying it’s fake but WTF!

  41. Camilla says:

Well, I’m in my mid 40s as most of my friends. Some mature, some immature. I recognize settling when I see it. I settled myself when I was 39. Divorced now.

Ben is very ambitious. And very strategic. And that’s everything if you want to have a long career.

  42. Gracie says:

Happy new year to you all!

  43. Leo says:

Well, hi there, Soothy! I was wondering when you’ll come back.

  44. Claire says:

    • Madly says:

      Word.

Love the irony of calling out how crazy the fans are over this by one who has the longest, more emotionally filled posts. Then the high brow of wanting to discuss things in a mature fashion/sane fashion while being insane and immature sounding.

      • **sighs** says:

Don’t even. Madly has been here a long time. Stop baiting.

      • moodgirl says:

Since we are daft, irrational, delusional and worse than the nannies are we to assume you won’t be visiting us again?

      • **sighs** says:

        And you’re still here because…..???

      • **sighs** says:

I’m not upset at all, sugar pie. Just annoyed. You’re the one that’s getting all emotional. I’ve actually responded to some of your posts, in a civilized way, and you haven’t responded back. You just get defensive and attack. We’re having a discussion upstairs if you want to put on your big girl pants and join in.

      • moodgirl says:

        Don’t feed please.

      • Ant says:

        Busy screeching

      • moodgirl says:

I’m not upset I just think you have a few problems. You think you are coming off as objective and smart but you are just argumentative and rude. If you must beat down everyone to accept your position then you aren’t doing a good job of presenting your facts.

You can voice your opinion as much as you’d like – the response you gave to one poster was full of inaccuracies and wishful pushing that I would expect from a nanny – but your insults will not be tolerated for long. This isn’t IMDB.

  45. Leo says:

I actually agree with you, but one thing does bother me.
Who says that only the Disney type of love is ideal and real? What ‘s wrong with love being based on common interests, goals, friendship, affection, understanding?
Why is it that only the head-over-heels crazy type of love is the right sort?

    • Lu says:

@Leo, I agree with your point about love. I see a lot of fans saying that even if the relationship were real (i.e., they’re engaged because they want to get married, for whatever value of love they share, if any), BC should have held out for the real, fairy-tale love that is out there for him and that he deserves. Um, no, not necessarily. There isn’t “a lid for every pot,” and not everyone who wants that romantic, “now and forevermore” love really finds it. He really loves acting, his career, and himself/living his life the way he wants to. Maybe he doesn’t have enough emotional energy left over to prioritize doting all over someone else, and this is enough for him, but he’s talking it up because that’s what he’s expected to do.

note: I haven’t jumped ship from the “fake” camp, but I have less and less desire to prove it as time goes on. I just wanted to say the above because I get tired of people advising others to hold out for true, perfect, thrilling love because “it’s out there.” Maybe it’s not, and you have to do what you think is right for yourself and your life goals. If he wants a home with children and thinks now is the time and Sophie is a good prospect, maybe that’s all he needs.

      • anon says:

Great post Lu. I absolutely agree that his first and true love will always be acting. Anyone in his life (except perhaps his parents and maybe child) will always come in second.

  46. **sighs** says:

Errr… I don’t really want to get in the middle of you guys…lol
But that footage was not edited. I also saw it from start to finish. I saw the little laugh. That was probably the most “affectionate” they’ve ever been. And if that is what you’re calling affectionate…..yikes.
For me it turned with footage from her very first red carpet. I initially thought he would end up with some snobby posh type, so I really wasn’t all that surprised at SH. But that footage where he’s steering her off the red carpet, and does not utter one word to her, doesn’t give her any sort of affectionate anything and this being the alleged love of his life at probably the most daunting public thing she’s ever done….he simply sort of nudges her out of the way with his dead #jawseyes, turns and gives just about the biggest smile ever to Keira knightley. It was like night and day.
And then later footage when they’re coming out of that hotel side entrance. He’s holding her hand, something gets stuck (I dunno if it was her dress or the door or what) and he bends down to fix it, and switches hands so that he’s still holding hands with her…was so extremely awkward. That, to me, was so obviously because they knew paps were out and he couldn’t risk getting a pic with him not holding her hand. That was the end for me thinking anything was real.

  47. Ingrid says:

    Thanks.

Sometimes it’s best to take a step back and make some tea.

While I disagree with some of your points, I think your take on things is a rational one. You might be right, I might be right. We’ll never know. But if you come back, I would like to ask your (as a part real – part PR, right?) take on these two things. After the Edin xmas trip I have tried to see the possibility that this might be real and so far I haven’t been able to explain these two things, so I’m curious.

    1. FO: Mr. Privacy took SH on their first (or some early number) date to a place where they were going to be papped. I cannot imagine him doing that with an actual possible GF. Also, after that she disappeared and reappeared when it came clear TIG and BC would be the oscar frontrunners. The timing of their relationship, the engagement, everything is just so convenient. The FO seems like it was a set up for their backstory.

    2. His behavior towards her compared with his behavior towards everyone else. He is waaay more affectionate with his friends, colleagues, exes and even fans than SH. If he would be reserved with everyone, I would go with “shy posh boy” but he isn’t. He seems to loathe her, but I cannot image why, if they are just settling with each other. They surely would have some sort of friendliness and affection?

  48. Sunflower says:

I think this is what confuses me the most too. If it’s real, why do they show so much contempt in their faces? If it’s fake, why aren’t they doing a better job of faking it?

I think we can all agree that whatever this is, it’s just plain weird. Something’s not quite right, but so far no one’s put their finger on it.

  49. anon says:

Bored with imdb-you obviously missed the snarky beginning – “this is my conspiracy theory”. NONE OF US KNOW-OK? So it’s down to speculation. The only thing I take as fact/believe are the quotes that I included in the post. And yes, the guy is ambitious as hell. Hope this helps!

  50. Lu says:

The “truthers” didn’t cut that part out. We talked about it and found it underwhelming. There was discussion of what he was saying to her; it looked like either “you’re late” or “all right?” This was the first time they’d seen each other in a week, by his own admission. She arrived there separately. They exchanged a few words. So, evidently, yeah, he doesn’t hate her, but this “affectionate” display was nothing much.

  51. anon says:

Bored with Imdb-forgot to add this-I actually agree/feel the same way re-she does have the same background and circle of friends. Makes sense-objectively.

  52. Madly says:

Am I the only one who found the recent fight on here funny? Just me then? Showing myself out now.

  53. **sighs** says:

It’s annoying when things get wonky around here.

  54. moodgirl says:

Obviously you are not bored with IMDB if you bring their fights over here.

  55. lola says:

“Why do you think he loathes her?”

It is evident in pictures. I simply can not understand how some don’t see that.

  56. Mikasa says:

    HAPPY NEW YEAR Benedict Cumberbatch!!!
    Oh, and everyone else.
Just a few more days til we see the next episode of the enGAGment.
So much to look for in 2015.
    Enjoy!

  57. Lucifer says:

    Happy new year Folks..

  58. Ingrid says:

BWIMDB, when I said she reappeared when TIG came Oscar front runner, I meant after it’s debut in Telluride and TIFF (two most important industry festivals after which TIG was considered a leader) The first confirmed sighting of her with him (RIII play) was on the same day as Telluride. So, there’s about three month gap there. The other sightings followed that.

As for the weekend trips, Edin xmas, JR wedding (is he friends with her separately?),IDK. Those things are the ones the PR narrative doesn’t really explain. Unless you think they were failed pap attempts which I don’t really buy (except both Edin trips were weird, it seemed he really wanted to be noticed.) Only explanation I can think of is that her family doesn’t know and they need to keep up appearances… Then again, trying to sell a relationship while you have never been spotted together seems very risky, so that would be one explanation. But none these explanations seem to be 100% concrete to me, I agree with you there.

The loathing: It’s his body language and the way he communicates with her (as in, he doesn’t). When you compare them on RC with BC and Keira or BC and Anna on RC, there’s a big difference. He whispers, talks and looks at Keira, he tried to make Anna less nervous, but with SH, he just directs her, so they would look in the same direction. He doesn’t look at her after they stop posing. If you think about how you communicate with someone you don’t like, you notice you don’t like to look at them. You avoid eye contact, you give them a small laugh to get away from answering.

Just compare the BIFA pics of BCSH (their personal best yet) and BC with Andrew. And the latter was taken after he lost Best actor. He has a genuine smile when Andrew is around (smiling with his eyes), with SH, his smile doesn’t touch his eyes.

The one theory that would explain every single thing: they had some sort of relationship, got engaged for PR (Harvey made them?) and they broke up very soon after. Now they are just waiting it out. SH bad attitude, BC weird statements, the family time, everything would be explained by this.

  59. gg says:

Oh god, the imdb obsession with “puppet accounts” is downright Stalinist

  60. HBIC says:

Ingrid has hit the nail on the head. This is what I’ve been saying along. This relationship was real at one point in time (be it casual, secret or whatever), something went down btw them around Nov and now they are stuck with each other until this is all over.

Of course, this setup btw them was arranged by PR. HW probably had a hand in getting the two of them together prior to the French Open. That’s how most celebs meet in Hollywood. Hell, Aniston and Pitt met though their PR agents, didn’t you know?

So, he probably attempted to have a relationship with her, went along with engagement and used it for PR, but somewhere along the way they broke up and then this relationship disenegrated into a PR nightmare. And I would put some money on the fact that he’s being pushed to marry her for his career. And he’s probably mulling it over, hence all the pissiness coming from him.

But I have hope that he’ll make the right decision, b/c I think if he married her, he would regret it. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want to, but I think he’s trying to decide whether or not going along with this is worth it in the long run for his career.

And for anyone who thinks that when you stand next to someone and can’t even look like you can barely stand them and truly think that’s how a “happy” couple acts in a relationship, you are either 1) blind, 2) completely clueless, or 3) in a bad relationship yourself and you are trying to convince yourself that there really is something there that doesn’t exist. No one who’s in love acts like that. Period.

  61. **sighs** says:

Ingrid- but when have they ever even appeared to look like they were in a relationship? They haven’t even looked like friends, let alone had any sort of relationship, even a dysfunctional one. Just like you described him being with friends. It seems like she’s the one person on the planet that he doesn’t get along with. And always has, ever since they started “dating”. It’s not even hate, like you would if you had a terrible breakup. It’s just…completely disengaged (sorry for the pun). It’s apathy.

I’m open for debate. I agree the whole thing is just a giant clusterf***. That’s why it’s so fascinating. Normally I wouldn’t even care, but….it’s so weird!

  62. moodgirl says:

    Happy New Year! 🎉🎊

  63. HBIC says:

    @sighs
Yeah, they look apathetic when near each other. But to get to that, you would have to spend time with someone to figure that out. Hence why I keep saying they had a relationship at some point time. No one comes out of the gate feeling that way towards someone. It occurs over time.

Who knows what’s going on btw them now. It looks like they’ve come to some agreement, hence the arm photo in Edinburgh and her fake happy face at the premiere when she wore that hideous brown dress. Now they are truly doing the PR thing. Like I said, when have you ever known anyone in Hollywood to look miserable when they are faking a relationship for their career?

Answer: You haven’t. They are all smiles. So someone got to the both of them and told them to put whatever negative drama that was going on btw them aside and to act right.

This relationship will end, mark my words. It’s just a matter of when.

Oh and lastly… have some sympathy for Ben. He’s trying to survive crazy Hollywood and hit the career heights that he’s aiming for. He doesn’t have the clout to fight against HW yet. That may come in time, but for now, he’s at HW’s mercy.

He’s a good guy, he really is. Who he was before (Dorkybatch) really is who he is. He’s just in a crazy, high pressure situation and when this happens, everyone’s negative personality characteristics come out. Think about it. How many people have you known who were dealing with a lot of negative crap were genuinely smiley when it was all going on? The answer is NO ONE. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that.

Once this is all over, he’ll go back to his old self. Don’t worry.

  64. **sighs** says:

HBIC- I still say she has been bought and paid for from the beginning. I think he tried to get some posh booty out of the deal and she said no way, this is all business.
I get that HW is a monster, and he can’t totally say no and is making the best of a bad situation. However, I do think you can say no or suggest other things that you would be willing to do. Keira Knightley has obviously put her foot down and said she won’t be using it for publicity. If she hadn’t, you know HW would be milking it for everything it’s worth. And I realize that she is not the lead, but she’s still a huge part of the movie, and the most recognizable and bankable. If he could, HW would be pimping her hard.
I’m sure between the 2 of them, HW and BC could have come up with something more palatable. I think he’s in this and way more ambitious than people want to give him credit for.

    • Sunflower says:

This is the only thing that makes it make sense to me. He’s contemptuous because someone has to be paid to be with him, she’s contemptuous because she’s being paid to be with someone.

This board today is wacky! Noticing a lot of things are getting deleted, and threads are getting moved around. Looks like people are arguing with themselves.

      • rosie says:

In total agreement, interesting threads on SoGo re: this. I think she’s clearly paid per public outing with him. Disheartening that BC is being marketed in this way–in 2015, a guy just can’t be single ??

@ HBIC–I think the thing that went down in November was the engagement announcement.

      • HBIC says:

Nope. I’m telling you – they got engaged and then probably broke up, right before he went to LA. His face during his initial promotion and the rumors of him crying on the plane and what not say it all right there.

Besides – marriage is good for a celebrity’s career. Why else do you think so many fake ones go down out there?

      • gg says:

HBIC: Have you seen the so-called “pap” version of his GMA interview? Someone filmed the whole thing from the audience including the off-camera stuff and at several points he looked close to tears. This was Nov 17 – morning before the red carpet in NYC. But who gets engaged then breaks up a week later?

      • HBIC says:

        @gg
I haven’t seen it, so I’ll have to check that out.

Who gets engaged and breaks up a week later? Someone in a bad relationship, that’s who.

        Poor Ben. He deserves better.

      • moodgirl says:

Maybe they got engaged because he really, really wanted to be married and was willing to risk it. Despite being meh about the offer, she had nothing going on and could cement her future so she agreed. Then she changed her mind. Maybe that is why he was so sad and angry that he wouldn’t let her name pass his lips.

      • Claire says:

Was the sighting of him crying on the plane confirmed as true or just tumblr rumour?

I hope there are gifs of rdj rolling his eyes and of bc near tears in that session. I forget how strange and discomforting november was. Oh and I didn’t catch, what was rdj rolling his eyes at?

  65. **sighs** says:

I also think you can spend time with someone and be completely apathetic towards them without being in a romantic relationship. They’ve obviously been spending time together. I’m sure they’ve gotten to know one another quite well. Well enough to loathe each other or be apathetic. I still don’t think any of that time has been romantic in nature.

  66. HBIC says:

    @sighs
Oh, his head is up is ass for sure, and that’s why this whole thing is falling apart. I don’t disagree with you there. But this farce will knock him back down to earth.

I still think that he “attempted” a relationship with her. Who knows if she recriprocated fully, but at the end of the day, there was just no love there. Nothing.

Hope he at least got some sex out of the deal. That’s probably all he’ll take away from this mess. That, and a massively bruised ego.

Oh, and KK has had enough success in Hollywood to have a say in what goes on with her personal life. She doesn’t need the PR boost. I think she has enough money to fall back on and has done a good deal in her career to not really care at this point in time.

    • moodgirl says:

I could never imagine these two ever getting close enough to sex, she looks so cold and ….untouchable.

    • **sighs** says:

I like this lovely civilized debate we’re all having. Happy new year, everyone!

    • Gracie says:

      @moodgirl, hush dear, she’s oh-so-sexy, dontchaknow? LOL.

And may I take this opportunity to wish all you lovely ladies happy new year. Gonna brave the cold for fireworks shortly. 🙂

  67. lola says:

I would say they met as a possible couple (at least PR couple). There was an attempt in getting to know each other a bit more from BC’s side and there was nothing – except payment – from her side (remember the blind item?). I wouldn’t say it got anywhere near a romantic relationship. He got stuck with a person he doesn’t have anything to talk to and to top that he had to get engaged to her.

(Still I could be all wrong and they are a couple (hope not).)

    • anon says:

Hi Lola. Don’t know if you know this but Ben and Sophie have known each other for a while. They were in a movie together in 2009. His ex Olivia was in a movie with her in 2004. They travel in the same circles and have the same friends. So meeting for the first time for PR – no. Beyond that-don’t know. BTW-what war did I miss and where did the IMBD person go? Did she get run off?

  68. lola says:

    @**sighs**
There is also a difference between Keira an BC since she already has a nod and he is “nod-less” and “recovering” from TFE – hence BC is a very easy target for HW.

I still think that he agreed to this arrangement at the beginning but it’s spined into clusterfu*k (and he can’t get out of it).

  69. Ingrid says:

Excellent points all around, sighs & HBIC. I agree with HBIC in that you need to spend time with each other in order to loathe/have apathy towards them. And I agree with sighs that you don’t need to have a romantic relationship in order to do that. They have spend time together and apathy / hatred is there now. (I don’t have a point, just agreeing with you guys)

BTW, Ben is new to this level Hollywood. He has mainly worked in the UK movie industry before. He was in 12YaS and AOC but he didn’t campaign for those. This is all new for him and he got paired up with Harvey on his first round. I truly feel sorry for him about that. This isn’t a normal Oscar campaign, this is The Harvey Method. As brutal as it gets. You can see Keira has much more experience and probably knows when to put her foot down and who to trust. She has been a leading lady for 10 years, Benedict is just starting. And this isn’t about him being innocent, child-like or anything, it’s just that he is inexperienced with this level as would anyone in his position be.

ETA: Agree with you too, Lola.

I’m thinking between the darcy shoot, the old school announcement, all the other stuffy photo shoots, it’s a possibility their angle for selling him is the next Colin firth, classic english gent. Fishstick’s pr tailored life story is a perfect fit for that image, not a Hollywood starlet

Happy New Year lads and ladies!!!!

Stuff Cumby and all the mess, the chats on here are aces regardless of subject as are all of you.

I may have partaken in some nye wine but sentiment still stands x

I’m rewatching Martin Freeman’s SNL episode. BC did say he was working on it but that’s what they all say. His episode would either be really really good or really really cringeworthy imo.

  77. Ingrid says:

Dear Mr Benedict Privacy Cumberbatch, take a look at Joseph Gordon-Levitt. That’s how you do a private relantionship!

Congrats to JGL and his bride!

  78. lindy79 says:

Can i just point out that Joseph Gordon Levitt got married on Dec 20th and its only coming out now.
The true definition of privacy Benedict, you knobcheese, so stop banging on like announcing it in the Times when you’re knowingly about to start an awards campaign is normal and begging for privacy.

  79. Save the Benny says:

I’m surprised there hasn’t been a post regarding the Xmas photos? There’s been a Benny post pretty much every day. But they missed that one.

    Happy new year

This whole thread is crazy. Remarks not getting posted. Remarks disappearing. What’s going on?

  83. Sunflower says:

Man, if we don’t get a new Benny post tomorrow we’re going to have to comment on this wacky thread all weekend!

For those who were looking, SoGo’s finally got the gif up of the RDJ eyeroll/eyebrow raise from that round table.

  84. Mikasa says:

So did anyone find sneaky pics of BCSH New Year’s Eve Kiss??
I know it’s tradition so I figured they’d be in some public tourist spot doing lots of pda trying to normalized it!!
    lol

  85. **sighs** says:

I’m almost scared to see what the New Year will bring with him…..I predict my eyes will get stuck in the back of my head at some point this month. 🙂

  86. Alice says:

Sorry, I can’t believe in any way, shape or form that they ever had a thing and he proposed for real. He’s thinking “I look sour and she looks like a zombie when we’re together. Let’s get married, Babe.” Yeah, right.

And anon, they may have worked together briefly in 2009, but there’s no evidence they had any contact after that. Not till Hay.

  87. scarf girl says:

Hope all have chilled from enjoyable NYE and 2015 is going well. A new Imitation Game promo has been popping up in my Twitter feed. It is actually very good; it focuses on Turing’s contributions to technology from leaders in tech industry and elsewhere. Be on lookout. Glad to see the Oscar campaign take this long overdue approach.

    • Ingrid says:

I love the new promos as well, scarf girl.

Also, this proves that everything was strategically planned from the beginning. The hero aspect is the biggest and the best selling point for award season but they obviously wanted to downplay it from the beginning so it would make bigger impact now. BC’s personal life is quite a boring one, so they needed to manufacture a talking point for Nov-Dec: The Gag. After that the hero promo seems fresh and interesting. They made sure TIG didn’t peak too soon.

Harvey is smart. Evil but smart.

Celebitchy people were mightily offended by Kaley Cuoco’s take on feminism. She apologized in instagram for her cmnts about feminism today. So whoever thinking PR won’t be bothered about some gossip site like this or public forum like celebitchy /dlisted / gawker etc are wrong as hell. The Christmas photo ops are being more and more clear as staged fan bait.
