Angelina Jolie sat down with Al Roker for her first post-pox TV interview

wenn21962016

It’s consistently funny to me that Angelina Jolie refuses to sit down for interviews with Matt Lauer. She was always close to Ann Curry, and after Lauer pushed Curry out of the morning anchor position, Angelina has never sat down on the couch with Lauer. Maybe she never liked him? I have no idea. But Unbroken was released by Universal, so it’s corporate synergy for the Today Show and NBC to promote the film, so Angelina once again managed to find a way to avoid Lauer altogether. First she did an NBC special with Tom Brokaw, and then this week she sat down for her first TV interview since contracting chicken pox. Who did the interview? Why, Al Roker, of course.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

“I would love to think of myself of the classic mom at home…” Interesting. She’s always said she’s a terrible cook and I tend to believe her. She’s not the mom in the kitchen, baking cookies. She’s the mom ordering Chinese food or pizzas or whatever. If you watch the interview to the end, Al Roker says that he did ask Angelina about the Sony Hack emails and she didn’t want to say anything on the record. So… Angelina gets to say “no comment” on camera (and they edit it out) and Amy Adams gets kicked off the program for the same thing? Interesting.

A few more Jolie stories…Angelina spoke to the Los Angeles Times about the decision to not include Louis Zamperini’s born-again conversion in the film – go here to read. What she says makes sense, and I agree, the logical conclusion to the film is when (spoiler?) Louis comes home from the war. Angelina also spoke to The Daily Mirror this week and she ended up talking about what it’s like to finally be married to Brad:

“What was lovely about it was that we didn’t feel there was something missing or we needed to get married. We felt so complete, and the commitment to children is one that you cannot walk away from, so we already had that commitment. It was really that we wanted to re-commit and commit in a deeper way, and we wanted to celebrate the union with our children. And it does feel different when you say, ‘my husband’ or ‘my wife’. It warms you in a different way and you look at that person a little differently. As soon as it was all over, we all just changed clothes and hung out. It was just a very happy time. It wasn’t this monumental change – we were just very happy and sure, and it’s quite an extraordinary feeling to be so sure. It gives you peace.”

[From The Daily Mirror]

What’s interesting to me is that in the scope of celebrity/gossip stories of 2014, the Jolie-Pitt wedding was pretty boring. I mean, there were big stories about the wedding (the out-of-nowhere announcement, the wedding photos), but if you ask me what the biggest celebrity wedding of the year was, I would have to say George Clooney and Amal. That wedding was so thirsty, it was crazy.

    She’s so purty…

    • mimif says:

      Her skin…

Hey, speaking of skin, how’s your regime going? I’ve decided that 2015 is the year of the Fraxel!

      • doofus says:

Her skin GLOWS…as someone said below, it reflects light, but it’s more like it emanates light. amazing.

        she IS purty…

    • I am loving her caplet dress thing….I don’t know why, because it looks like a nurse’s outfit during WWII, but every time I see it, I fall in love with it again and again. Especially with her little red posey brooch. I wish her shoes had been red (or dark green).

    • Kiddo says:

She’s the very sunshine that rose over Roker’s forecast.

      • Kim1 says:

The interview was with Al probably because he was LA area for the Parade of Roses festivities. She wouldn’t do GMA while promoting a Universal project especially since Brokaw/Today has been promoting Unbroken.
As for Sony hacking project maybe they learned from Amy situation. Have they asked ANY other celebs about it on camera since Amy?

      • Kiddo says:

Maybe they haven’t asked because they are under the weather.

      • mimif says:

Lol Kiddo, you’re killing me today.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      Wow, Yes stunning.

    • MariPoodle says:

I know she uses Chantecaille lip gloss (Photo evidence when she pulled it out of her bag for a touch up at an awards show, collective gasp and made a run on it), (I bought some, I just look like “Me” with lip gloss) but we need to find out what foundation/powder she uses. Because of course that will make us all look like her twin. 🙂 I think she may have used her down time for a little Botox touch up and possibly some IPL to help dismiss the redness from the pox. Mucho Envy-o.
She could sell stale cornflakes and I’d buy cases.

      • Nibbi says:

yeah i’d give teeth (well, maybe just a molar but still) to know her skin secrets.
        ie, IPL? peels? microdermabrasion? what?
        and foundation/ moisturizer, definitely

    • TremeHBOfangrl says:

Her skin is CRAZY flawless in that last photo. I hope the chicken pox did no damage…missed her on today show…how did her complexion look? Yes, I am this shallow.

  2. Gossip wise–Brad and Angelina’s wedding was boring. Very normal. Only fans REALLY cared. But George and Amal’s wedding, Lord was that some GOOD gossip. And finally showed George’s true colors, lol.

And Angelina has done an interview with Matt Lauer–she was promoting ‘Changeling’.

    • lisa2 says:

As a fan yes I liked Brad and Angie’s boring non-gossip wedding.. Mainly for the reason you said. .it was normal and just felt like what everyone else in the world would do. That is exactly how I see them.. Rich/Famous/ but still keeping the normal in their lives..

George did what George always does..not surprised.

      • capepopsie says:

Actually, George did what George NEVER does. . . got married.

      • maggie says:

It was normal? Are you kidding? There was nothing normal about it. And everyone gossiped about it.

      • Leah says:

Er, VC meant the wedding itself was normal as far as it being low key with no pre-wedding buzz or details leaked. Also I cannot recall much gossip about it at all. A lot of people oohing and ahhing but no real criticism or gossip.

    • Tiffany says:

@VC. That was pre AC firing. I think that was the last time and then after than Ann was her go to at NBC. Either way, it is telling now that she has not sat down with him since.

Also, for a 5 minute puff piece, I thought Al did a decent job.

    • TremeHBOfangrl says:

‘Changeling,’ interview was from before Matt had Anne fired though wasn’t it?

  3. lisa2 says:

Angie has sat down with Matt before. She was interviewed by him for Changeling..

I enjoyed the interview.. It was the same answers; but I don’t care.. I enjoy seeing her any time. Al said he asked her about the Sony Hacking and she didn’t comment. Good.. It has nothing to do with this film and it would just keep the story going.

  4. Maya says:

Angelina is very loyal towards her friends and they are loyal to her. Ann is one of Angelina’s closes friends so of course Angelina will not sit down with the person who got her friend fired.

Angelina glows everytime she speaks about Brad and her children. She mentioned that the shoes Shiloh was wearing at the premier was the shoes Louis wore in 1940 and was a gift from him to Shiloh.

As for Angelina refusing to talk about Sony hacking and Amy doing the same but was attacked. Angelina is simply to powerful for them to attack while Amy is not. More than that – Weinstein was the one who published the Amy thing to push her awards campaign. I am not saying what they did was right but Weinstein is taking advantage of it to push Amy ahead of the awards race.

    • KAI says:

She did not wear his shoes, she wore a gold necklace with a shoe pendant which he gave as a gift to Angelina.

  5. GingerCrunch says:

Al’s the best! It cracked me up a little, though, to hear he interviewed her. You GO, Angelina! Wouldn’t it be so great to have enough power to snub really high-profile people like that? Ha-ha!

    • Amy’s too nice; Angelina unleashed the Leg of Doom on them, lol. They didn’t stand a chance. Plus, I’m also thinking that Amy was blindsided by the questions of the hack, while Angelina probably made it clear before she even got there that she would be saying ‘no comment’ on anything they asked about the Sony hack. And that it wouldn’t look good for TWO actresses to be treated unfairly by them about questions relating to the Hack.

      • GingerCrunch says:

Maybe when Amy wins her Oscar she can start snubbing reporters!

      • lisa2 says:

Winning an Oscar doesn’t equal power..
Amy has to have more cheddar in order to snub people . She doesn’t have that yet. Oscar Wins don’t equal Cheddar.. or we wouldn’t have so many past winner drop from sight.

someone up thread called the interview a “fluff piece”.. that is one of the things I don’t understand. Why is it that an actor interviewing for a film need to be hard hitting news. They are actors not drug lords or people making policy. Matt does that in his interviews. Acts as if these people are on witness stand and on trial. They are talking about movies and acting.. then a bit about their family and whatever. Just ask them and let it go. Don’t need to drill them.

      • GingerCrunch says:

Those poor anchors at the Today Show were probably chomping at the bit, though, to address the Sony hack with whomever they could! It seems so desperate over there. But then, they all sold their souls. Glad Ann got out. My estimation of her went back up after she “left”.

  6. Kiddo says:

I’m disappointed. She could have spoken with Jim Cantore instead, while braving a blizzard.

  7. Tippy says:

It’s about time that Matt Lauer got called out on his $#!T and received some blowback.

  8. Gina says:

Isn’t Al Roker the weatherman? She does have options, GMA is a better choice. She looks okay, but kind of looks like a deer in the headlights when she opens her eyes so wide. Even the pretty one try too hard. HNY!

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Gina, who wrote: “Isn’t Al Roker the weatherman?”

What is with people dissing Al Roker because he’s ‘also’ a meteorologist? The man has been conducting celebrity interviews early 2000’s. The first celebrity interview I recall seeing him conduct was with actor Christopher Meloni, who at the time was still portraying sexual predator/serial killer Christopher Keller on the hit HBO series “Oz” and also starring as Detective Elliot Stabler in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” at the same time. It was a great interview.

      • Peppa says:

I love Al Roker! I met him and he was super duper nice. I’d rather be interviewed by him than Matt Lauer.

      • Gina says:

The only interview I remember him doing was with Speidi…Spencer and Heidi…why he did I’ll never know. He ended up scolding them…I’d stick to the weather if I were him. GMA surpassed Today for a reason, and part of it is the personnel.

      • TremeHBOfangrl says:

I actually think their ratings would go up if they had less rat-fink Lauer and more Roker interview segments. No one likes Lauer, there are infinite polls to suggest this, and the shows ratings plummetted after he shiv’d Ann Curry. Today show would quickly regain numbers if they deep sixed Lauer, and his gf Natalie Morales– kept Tamron, Savannah, Al and promoted Carson Daily.

      • TremeHBOfangrl says:

What’s with the dissing Al Roker, is that it’s a way for them to bizarrely diss Angelina. They’re snarking, ‘baha she got interviewed by ‘the weatherman,’ nevermind Roker has like 3 shows, has been on the today show for 25 years and interviewed tons of celebs….it’s their way of pretending that ‘Today,’ bumped Angie down to Al’s ‘level,’ not knowing that ‘Q’ rating wise, Al is about 1000 points above Matt Lauer.

      • lisa2 says:

        @TremeHBOfangrl

YOU HIT IT RIGHT.. that is exactly what that comment was trying to do. And yes trying. Al actually does good celebrity interviews. He is not acting like an attorney with someone on trial.

This was a good interview and he covered a lot of bases. Not bad at all.

  9. Jayna says:

People always say they don’t need marriage. It’s just a piece of paper. Yet, every time I read an interview of the same people who lived together for years, they always make remarks about how it feels different, every single time.

    • lisa2 says:

Well they both have been married before so they know what marriage “feels like” appose to someone that has never been married. I think they didn’t think it would be different considering they have been together for near 10 years raising 6 children. That is a lot.

so I really love that they both seem so happy about being husband and wife. They both keep saying it in interviews. Must be a new thing and feeling.. Romantic in a way too. A new layer to what you already have. Every relationship needs to keep it going and fresh..

  10. Indira says:

Oh my God, does her skin actually reflect light?! How can I get mine to do that?
Sigh. I feel like Goopy needs to stop gooping for a moment and find out what the Jolie is doing so she can goop to us about it. That would be fun.

    • Flower says:

I don’t know what makeup Angie uses but in old Hollywood an actress named Norma Shearer had a special make up developed for her which contained ground up pearls, the first time she wore it on screen she literally glowed , everyone else in the scene looked dull and lifeless. Every actress wanted it but she put her husband Irving Thalberg on the case, one of the chief executive at Warner brothers, as it was developed at the studio WB claimed the rights to it and the result was that Norma got her way and no other actress at the studio was allowed to wear the ‘magic makeup’. Maybe Angelina rediscovered the formula.

  11. lower-case deb says:

my favorite Ralph Russo dress is still the peplum dress she wore to Brad’s WWZ red carpet. never ever thought that a peplum would win me over, but it did.

  12. GinGia says:

    and next……..”Ambassador to Chicken Pox”

  13. PefectDate says:

I think her comments about the wedding were interesting, especially about how afterwards “we all just changed clothes and hung out.”
There are some women these days who make so much of the “big day” they forget there is an entire lifetime of commitment. Finding the perfect dress, having “the best” of everything, finding the perfect flowers, which color scheme should we use, all the myriad of details you can obsess on in doing your wedding. The wedding industry money machine certainly promotes this “it’s your big day” mindset.
I have to respect Angelina for putting it in perspective. You do have a life after you take off the white gown and aren’t the center of attention any longer.

    • lisa2 says:

So I gathered she didn’t have 2 or 3 dresses to change into after the wedding..

I really like that; put it in perspective..

and I loved your comment about there being a life after you take off the dress..

    • doofus says:

What you say about “the big day” vs. a lifetime of commitment is SO TRUE. I know a few ladies that were all gaga about getting the ring and planning the wedding and then split up a few years later. And it’s not like the relationships were short pre-engagement, either. it was just that married life was either harder than they expected or NOT AT ALL what they expected.

    • Jaine says:

      so true

    • I honestly wouldn’t be able to stand that. I mean, I get that weddings like that is part of the bride’s personality (and Lord can I see my little sister doing that–she LOVES fashion and experimenting and attention on her), but I would be mentally eyerolling the entire time. I could see TWO wardrobe changes–the wedding dress at the wedding, and then maybe a nice cocktail dress IF you didn’t want to be bogged down by a wedding dress–so you could party easier, lol. But other than that, it’s really unnecessary. I’d rather spend money on booze, food, and cake.

    • Korra says:

I cannot do that. I barely have enough money to pay rent. I’m not going to spend it on a wedding.

    • Leah says:

Agreed. I think that’s why so many couples divorce so quickly and so easily. Its all about the WEDDING. But after that half a day is over, then is the MARRIAGE. And that is not as glamorous, glossy or fun as the ceremony itself. Its like people get so hooked on the excitement and get so worked up over the wedding, that there is a let down after its all over, and the couple are all, so what now? After the excitement has died down, the party is over, reality sets in. A wedding is just a ceremony that runs for 10 minutes. That’s all. A marriage, is for a lifetime. Weddings are easy. A marriage, is a whole other deal.
Also, people think if they are no longer in that ‘in love’ stage, that the marriage is over. The in love stage does not last forever, and many people do not comprehend this. Marriage settles into a deeper love and companionship, the intense ‘in love’ feelings do not last but give way to a different but deeper love and companionship. People are addicted to love, and expect the in love feelings to last forever and when they inevitably do not, as is natural, they think the marriage is over. Marriage is more than the initial in love phase.

  14. scout says:

Who wants to sit with Matt Lauer for anything? Yikes! Good for Angie to go with Al Roker. Glad she got over the Pox so quickly and without scars. I think she has a good marriage and is a great mommy, looking at her children cling to her in various pics. Her skin here…OMG! Porcelain.
I have started to have pity/sympathy for Mrs.GC now. What a waste all those scholarships awarded for her college education, years of hard work and she ends up in Hollywood as an arm candy, doing all the silly things what an average, C listed uneducated starlet would do with a squidgy (Bendy is a genius! Haha..), pudgy man.

  15. MrsBPitt says:

Did anyone else see that Amber Rose made a statement about applauding Brad and Angelina for raising a “trans-kid”? I thought that was such a terrible thing to do! You should NEVER talk about someone’s child for one thing! I have no problem if Shiloh grows up and identifies herself as transgender, but for someone to label an 8 year old child in public like that, just because she wore a suit to a movie premiere, (and I’m pretty sure, Amber Rose is not tight with the Jolie-Pitts) is just wrong!!!

    • Kim1 says:

Angie just called Shiloh,”she” in Today Show interview when he asked about Shiloh wearing a suit.
Amber Rose needs to stick to stripping/twerking or whatever else it is she does.I just read she had a fit when someone called her son Gay so she needs the STFU.
R Kelly has a child who identifies as Trans ,funny Amber didn’t talk about that kid.

      • TremeHBOfangrl says:

I was on twitter the day Amber Rose did that, and she was being laughed at because someone had snapped a pic of a checkout lady in Walmart or Target that had a bald blond buzz cut and vaguely looked like her, and captioned it in a Tweet: ‘Now that the checks aren’t coming from Whiz, Amber works to make ends meet,’ it was pretty humiliating….I personally think she did/said that to deflect from that bad burrrn. The fact that she used an 8 yr old is what’s grotesque.

    • Elly says:

the post wasn´t meant as insult, it was cleary meant positive. She highlighted that Shiloh has luck that her parents let her wear what she wants and not force her in girlie-outfits like other people would do. The wording was just odd and “trans” is definitely no word for a child.

      • MrsBPitt says:

I didn’t think AR meant it as an insult. I’m just saying, this is an eight year old girl, that she doesn’t even know. And even if she did know Shiloh, DON’T TALK ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE’S CHILD! It is not right! At eight years old, I wouldn’t even expect her parents to “label” her as anything in particular. She is EIGHT…she may go through many phases of “what she wants to be” in her life…Goth, Ballerina, biker chick, etc. It is not for a stranger to comment on. I wouldn’t dream of commenting on social media about a friend’s child. As I said, if Shiloh grows up and wants to identify as “Trans”, then that is perfectly fine. It is not for someone else to do…

  16. Catherine says:

    Her makeup is perfection!

  17. Megan says:

I get her point but from what I have heard the most interesting part of Louie’s story is how he saved himself and what he did after he became a born again Christian. I’m not religious at all, I tend to think really religious people are hypocrites but from what I have read he wasn’t and it was the most interesting part of his story.

He actually had a true happy ending. I get it why she’d end the movie where she did but I think she put her own personal beliefs over the true story.

    • lisa2 says:

Well he and his family were happy with the movie.. and how his life was portrayed.

      they know the “true story”..

      • Megan says:

I think she actively left out a huge part of who this man was what his true story was. I am sure they are happy with the story but that doesn’t mean that she told his true and complete story. And while I think Angelina is very talented I also think her personal beliefs and free or not getting an Oscar kept her from leaving in a part of his story that is controversial.

I am sure the movie is good, I am sure she will get Oscar nominations but I think she left out his story of survival out; and like I said that was what many have said is the most interesting part.

    • Amcn says:

Really? The most interesting part was Billy Graham? The religious themes are very front and centre throughout the movie as his faith grows. The movie had a logical conclusion. To try to cram the rest in 15 minutes would have been disrespectful and would just generate more criticism.

    • Maya says:

I think you are missing the most important and deciding factor regarding religion.

Louis Z himself didn’t want the movie to specify Christianity. He wanted the faith and hope to be universal so that people around the world with different beliefs and religion – can identify and be inspired by the movie.

Since Angelina showed him the movie before he passed away – and she got his approval. Well that’s what’s counts and the rest of us (including me) can pretty much just be silent about the religious theme. The story was Louis’s to tell the way he want to and he achieved that via Angelina.

    • norah says:

The true story has been said over and over again. She has said that the film is not enough – if the book is more than 400 pages she only filmed a part which ended after ww2 she has said several times that it would take lots more movies to fully tell his story but she concentrated on this part of his life. Nothing wrong with that. She has said so many times and even his family have supported her decision to stop there. Read the book – that would be more fulfilling and more complete. This movie cd go on for hours more i am sure but at least she did justice to what she chose to film dont you think?

  18. norah says:

The impt thing is that louis z saw the finished film and that pple have appreciated the movie if judging from the tweets etc – i think it is good effort for everyone involved to get it right from the studio to every cast and crew member esp jack o connell as louis. Kudos to him

  19. Brittany says:

It annoys me that she can get away with a ‘no comment’ about the Sony hack but they cancel Amy Adam’s interview for being uncomfortable about discussing it.

    • That’s the way it works in Hollywood–Angelina is a much bigger star than Amy Adams. She has a lot more power. Also, it wouldn’t look good if they did that to another actress, shortly after doing it to Amy–no matter which actress it was. I don’t think they anticipated the bad reaction that it got. They probably expected it to be buried, and not to have a fuss kicked up about it–at least not at them.

      • Brittany says:

I can’t agree that AJ is a bigger star. Maybe because of tabloids but I’d say Amy is a much better actress at least. 🙂 But if AJ has so much power, I’d think they’d want her opinion on the hack more than Amy’s.

      • Talent and power aren’t the same thing. The fact that Angelina has so much power means that she can clearly veto questions and ‘get away with it’–something that Amy didn’t (they sprung it on her as well)….because Angelina is a big ‘get’ for them. I can guarantee that if they’d treated Angelina the same way they did Amy, that the story would’ve been 10x bigger because Angelina is a huge star. And the backlash would be greater, because not a lot of people pay attention to Amy…..

      • Brittany says:

The backlash was pretty great for Amy not having any ‘power’. You’re reaching but you loons always do anyways.

  20. Ann says:

I love Al Roker too. He makes everything fun. I don’t care for Matt Lauer.

  21. norah says:

the issue is still simple – who is the better actress between aj and amy adams is a matter of opinion. I think both are equally good actresses as i am a fan of both ladies but in terms of
influence it is aj hands down. The thing about pple like naomi or julianne or amy and other actresses is that they are usually not mainstream actresses – like for sandra bullock speed was her ticket and all the movies she did – her name recognition is very strong just like aj who did lara croft and all those action movies etc which guaranteed an audience – and that is why an actress like aj can choose who she wants to work with ranging from movies to the top technicians in hw – same like the top a list actors as well.

  22. lower-case deb says:

i think the issue of Sony-related interview is less about who’s the stronger actress or who had the bigger influence, and more about the fact that NBC and Universal are owned by the same company and nothing should stand in the way of cross-platform promotion. (kinda like when Angelina did extensive promo on ABC for Disney)

btw, i was just watching the Today interview with Tom Brokaw and the cast and Angelina, at the end of the interview they said “this Today show is sponsored by Unbroken”. so i guess that’s an example of cross-promotion.
