Viola Davis wins big in MaxMara at the SAGs: amazing & flawless?

Viola Davis is everything. It’s true. And there isn’t much else to say about that. But still, let’s talk about how SHE IS EVERYTHING. First, the gown. It’s MaxMara. It looks fantastic on her. The white pops, it doesn’t look too bridal, she styled it perfectly and I love that Viola feels comfortable enough to go without a wig on major red carpets. Also: her arms!! God, I need to do more work on my arms.

Queen V won Best Actress for her role in How to Get Away with Murder. Some think that show is not the best vehicle for Viola, some say the show is too crazy, whatever. But almost everyone agrees that Viola elevates the show and she’s one of the best actresses on TV these days. Which is exactly why her peers gave her the SAG Award. And she was so happy. I’m including the video of her acceptance speech below, but everyone is talking about this line: “I’d like to thank Paul Lee, Shonda Rhimes, Betsey Beers, Bill D’Elia, and Peter Nowak for thinking that a sexualized, messy, mysterious woman could be a 49-year-old dark skinned African American women who looks like me.” Viola is everything.

Random people… I love Kelly Macdonald, but she looked like she was going to Olive Garden on a first date in this vintage Moschino dress. And Gretchen Mol’s Dennis Basso gown is cute, but I thought she was Amy Poehler. Right?

    Static cling, oof.

    • mimif says:

Please please tell me Viola is wearing orange eyeshadow. Please. And I’m transfixed by her earrings, she looks phenom in white.

      • Kiddo says:

        I think it’s more gold-bronze than orange.

My comment was about the black flapper dress, It’s unabashedly clinging to lady-bits.

      • mimif says:

Roger, I only replied to you because you know I like to tro double hockey sticks you. And of course it’s more gold-bronze, of course. Because god forbid anything ever be orange ever!

      • Kiddo says:

        👀+🍊

  2. MrsBPitt says:

Personally, I don’t like any of these dresses….

  3. QQ says:

    YES.MAMA.VIOLA!!! YESSSS

    Slay! she looks amazing

I too Love Kelly and that dress is entirely too Young and Awkward on her

  4. Maudd says:

Fabulous dress on an awesome actress!

  5. I Choose Me says:

I’m not sure about that peekabo slit but I love her so she gets a pass. Those arms are to die for and her warm smile just gets me every time.

    • T.C. says:

She looks great. Those arms, that body and yes the smile. Her comment about a DARK-skinned women being shown as sexualized is amaze balls. Especially with Hollywood only casting light skinned biracial women for any part requiring a sexy BLACK woman. Slaves or maids usually but not vixens. The recent casting of yet another light biracial actress to play a Dark-skinned character from AFRICA in the next X-Men movie says it all. Subtle White washing of the brown and dark-skinned Black woman. Go Viola.

      • Santia says:

Oh my God, yes. SOOOOOOOOOOO tired of the whitewashing and SOOOOOOOO tired that people just don’t see it or just refuse to see it. It is pervasive and it is dangerous to the self-esteem of young black girls everywhere.

      • MaiGirl says:

        Preach it, T.C.

      • T.C. says:

        SANTIA,

People think Black women are just being hysterical as usual or discriminating against biracial women when the evidence is clear that Hollywood is deliberately hiring only women with part White ancestry to play Black Women. If the shoe was on the other foot with white actresses only getting roles if they have part African ancestry the response from White women and White men would be deafening.

Soon when they repeat the doll test on little Black girls they will be picking both the White and biracial doll as the model of beauty while passing over the Black doll. Sad.

I disagree – it is not about depth of skin color. It has far more to do with facial bone structure & body type, which applies to Asians, Latino, Middle Easterners, Indians, and Caucasians as well.

  6. scout says:

Viola’s skin looks beautiful and well toned arms too. I haven’t seen the show “How to get away with murder”, must check it out.

    • SpookySpooks says:

It’s not a good show and she’s overacting in it, IMO. But she’s so awesome I’m still glad she won.

      I love Kelly so much.

  7. Rachel says:

The Viola post!! When she stepped onscreen… holy moly! RADIANT. Good lord, she eclipsed everyone around her. The halter showed off her amazing shoulders and arms. A vision in white. Utterly gorgeous. I don’t usually simper, but Viola has reduced me to simpering in that dress.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, radiant is a great description. She looks amazing (except maybe the weird bunching around her feet). Love the earrings, too.

  8. embertine says:

Holy crap that woman must be bathing in the blood of virgins to look this good at 49. She is radiant.

  9. Renee says:

Viola looks AMAZING in white. I love that she wore her hair out. I loved her speech. Her daughter is lucky to have such a fierce woman for a mother.

  10. Jenny says:

I hate HTGAWM. It’s as bad and soapy as Scandal. But I’m very happy for Viola.

    • mom2two says:

I could not get into that show. Viola is the best part of it by far, the cast around her is not at her level at all. I am glad she won and I love her dress. She is probably one of the few dresses I’ve liked. The women were a mess at the SAG’s…
Viola wins my best dressed probably followed by Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams of GOT.

    • Lucinda says:

All of Shonda Rhime’s shows are soapy. We quit watching Grey’s when it became nothing but soap. That being said, I love Scandal for the time being. I think because Olivia is far more interesting than Meredith ever was. HWTGAWM is not as strong but it could get better. Time will tell. Viola is by far the most interesting character. The law students are a little two two-dimensional right now.

    • Josefa says:

Yeah, same here. Viola is a terrific actress and I’m fine with her winning every award. Go get ’em. But her show is god damn awful, and not even her pressence makes me endure watching that crap.

    • GoOnGirl! says:

@ #10 Jenny: I have to agree. Same old, same old tired plots every week. The “college children” worked my last nerve. I got to the point where I couldn’t watch any more. So I don’t.

    • Pinky says:

HTGAWM gets better. Yes, it started out frenetic and murder-of-the-week with an overarching murder that was almost too much to digest. But it focuses over time.

Still, I like HTGAWM over Scandal. But I love EMPIRE over them all! (But who’s comparing? Ugh. I know I shouldn’t.) Anyway, Viola FTMFW!

  11. Luca76 says:

So happy she won!! That show is a mess but she is magnetic on screen.

    • lucy2 says:

Yeah, her talent is way beyond the material the show is giving her, but at the same time I’m happy for her. That’s a nice award to get, and the show has been a hit, so I hope she’s pleased with it.

  12. PunkyMomma says:

    Viola wins everything!

  13. Scarlet Vixen says:

It’s a lovely dress. But sorry, it screams “Beach Wedding” to me.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

I think she looks stunning in vibrant colors. White just doesn’t do enough for her; she’s too spectacular and it seems boring.

  14. smee says:

I never wear white and this is why! White looks incredible on Viola Davis. Her skin-tone is perfect with white and the cut of the dress is super flattering. I too love her natural hair – I can’t even imagine having to wear a wig at her age. Gorgeous.

“first date at Olive Garden” hehehehehehehehehe

  15. Jayna says:

I thought Viola looked fantastic last night. The gown had beautiful movement.

  16. Newgirl says:

    Yay viola!

  17. Beckysuz says:

I love love love that white dress!! She is wearing the sh*t outta that dress !! Fabulous!

  18. WTF says:

VIOLA IS SO AMAZING I CAN’T EVEN STAND MYSELF!

  19. minx says:

Love Viola, love the way she looked last night.
She is the only decent thing on that show; the young actors are terrible.

  20. K says:

Viola looks awesome and so does her hair

  21. AlmondJoy says:

Her speech was EVERYTHING to me! Whether you like Shonda and HTGAWM or not, she is showing that black women can be fully fleshed out characters instead of just playing the best friend or sassy coworker. So so happy about this win!

As for Viola, she is a goddess! Just beautiful. I also love how her fro has grown!

    • FingerBinger says:

I agree with you 100%. A black woman can do drama and not be the bestie used for comic relief.

    • bjesgirl says:

Agreed. Often times, I feel like the “black girlfriend” role is like the “gay bestie” stereotype. Like omgz, they just exist to comment on the white girl main character’s problems and give her super sassy advice lol. Clueless pops into mind when I think of this.

  22. TEE JAY says:

I liked this dress but didn’t love it. Her speech was beautiful and I felt really inspired by it. It made me realize I’m ok as well.

  23. kri says:

“Amazing and flawless” is the perfect description. And the dress wasn’t bad either. I like this lady so much. She was everything last night.

  24. poppy says:

    ZMOG VIOLA.
    fanfreakingtastic.

    BEST DRESSED.
there were a scant few that were close but, sorry, everyone else can go home.

  25. bjesgirl says:

I love Viola. She looks like a goddess in that dress. And she has such a screen presence, she literally steals every scene she’s in. That being said, I’m not sure about her HTGAWM performance. It’s like I just want her to win stuff because I love her lol. Forreal, her acting in the show is kinda over the top.
