Bradley Cooper didn’t expect anyone to watch or care about ‘Sniper’

Bradley Cooper

Some of you have been begging for Beige Booty Shorts to make a grand return. Don’t let me down. As we’ve discussed, Bradley Cooper secured his third Oscar nomination for American Sniper, a film for which he rocked a fake baby and chugged 8,000 calories per day. I’m oversimplifying. He also played Chris Kyle as a guy who spent too much time talking to his wife on a satellite phone during battle scenes. I get that the script needed to stress the communication of a military family, but the excessive phone calls were a stretch.

Bradley won’t win the Oscar (or will he?), but he’s already won by ruling the box office with a $324 million film. Bradley spoke with NPR’s Fresh Air. The whole thing is enormous (full transcript here), and he works it so hard. This is a really powerful interview — even though Bradley’s playing dumb about what he expected from audiences. Some key passages:

On the cultural lightning rod: “I don’t think one could ever foresee something like that happening. I feel a bit removed from it just because I’m in NYC doing this play, and my life hasn’t changed on a daily basis, you know? People aren’t coming up on the street or anything like that, either praising or yelling at me. But war is such an emotional subject, so maybe I was a fool to think that it wouldn’t.”

The film as a Western: “It was always to get Chris Kyle right and tell a human story, and I just liked the idea of a character study based on this conflict. That’s what I’ve enjoyed about it initially, and I love the idea of framing it as a Western. And that this guy happened to be incredibly charismatic. You have a guy going into a town, and there’s his equivalent on the other side – another sharpshooter. He’s a sharpshooter. You end it in, you know, tumbleweeds. At the dust storm, there’s showdown. This sort of, you know, one man and his sort of pursuit – that idea.”

When vets come home: “Chris talked about being over there and the choices and why, and he talked about how that’s not his job. He made a commitment and an oath to his country, and if you have an issue with it, the people that you really need to talk to are those who make the decisions of where to send the troops. And he would wish that that attention was diverted to them, and instead, maybe look at what the sacrifice is. That’s how we looked at this movie, as, hopefully, igniting a conversation about the lack of care and attention that goes towards vets. 22 vets commit suicide each day – that the amount of people that come home is so much greater than before because of medical advancement and that we need to take care of them.”

Getting into Chris’ head: “I lived with him. I basically made this document where I had every single thing he’s ever said recorded and I would just listen to it. It’d be the first thing I woke up with in the morning. I’d just put on the ear buds right away and last thing I listened to at night. And just really sort of soak him in. And so, God, I’m just – something about him – it was just beautiful.”

[From NPR]

There’s more stuff about Bradley’s weight gain and his experiences visiting overseas troops. They weren’t impressed to meet the guy from Alias. All of what Bradley says about veterans and aftercare is dead on. He’s done his research there. The problem I have with Sniper is how much of it was fictionalized. They based it on Chris Kyle’s book of tall tales, and then it was further modified as a “Western.” The standoff between Kyle and the enemy sniper, Mustafa, never really happened. The two characters’ rivalry was a framing device, and it was a driving force in the film. That’s just one example of how Chris Kyle’s history was rewritten.

Do you believe Bradley was super surprised at how Sniper drew controversy? Character study or not, this is a movie about a controversial figure who draws strong opinions from both sides of the political spectrum. Of course people would get worked up. BCoop also revealed to USA Today how he’s also surprised the film is a box-office smash. He’s playing humble. This is more of the “I’m not handsome” game.

Something fun: Coop’s stylist spoke with InStyle to reveal how she’s feverishly planning his Oscar look. The plan is for Coop “to go old-fashioned, like Cary Grant.” LOL.

With all the respect for veterans… I am right there with you Cooper, I didn’t care and I didn’t watch it.

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

I read Kyle’s autobiography so i was interested by the movie specially after the clues that he wrote many lies in the book but apparently all who was interested ( for me) in the book or in Kyle has been “sanitized” in the movie

  2. OSTONE says:

Of course the movie was going to be a hit. Because ‘Murica and all that. However, he was very good in the film and his nomination is well-deserved.

  3. Yeah…..I think the controversy actually HELPED the movie. Because I saw SO many people on my FB page (who don’t normally post about movies, celebrities, etc) post stuff that was defending Chris Kyle as a patriot, and Michael Moore’s comments helped with that as well. Add in the fact that you’re talking about 9/11, and GUNS…yeah, recipe for an amazingly successful movie. I live in the middle of the woods, where EVERYONE has a gun. And a hunting cabin. And their kids miss school every year because of hunting season (every year, we used to almost miss a day to count, because nearly 1/3rd of the class was always missing at the same time)……

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

I knew the movie would be a success after the success of Berg’s Lone Survivor last year but I never thought it would be as successful until I read the reactions on the trailer

  4. Diana says:

I remember thinking he was so adorable on Alias, waaaay back in the day. Now I look at him and just: mehhhhhh. He’s so transparently grasping and artificial, it’s a turn-off.

    That’s all I’ve got.

    • Esmom says:

I loved him in Alias, too. He’s never been as natural or unaffected since, from what I can gather.

  5. Beth says:

He’s not handsome. But I like his acting. Didn’t see this movie, though. Too violent. My husband liked it, though.

  6. kri says:

I hope he wears an Armani jacket and those beige booty shorts. I wanna see dat AZZZZZZ swing and swish!!! No, for real, not a fan of his, but he is not dumb, I will give him that. Also, he is right about the “care” of our vets. It’s disgraceful.

BREAKING NEWS: BEDHEAD, BEIGE BOOTY SHORTS AND FAKE BABY!

  8. Neelyo says:

I can’t believe the media doesn’t call out his obvious plastic surgery. Renee Zellwegger was raked over the coals for her recent transformation and nobody says a word about Cooper morphing into Robin Williams Manilow? Double standard.

  9. The Original G says:

This cracks me up. He thought a 60 million dollar film directed by Clint Eastwood was going to be a little art-house piece to see in the West Village or go direct to video?

    Pu-leeeeze, Anne.

    • mia girl says:

      So much this.

    • manta says:

Well, he may have pushed it when he said he didn’t expect ANYONE to watch it , but I can believe him if he thought it wouldn’t necessarily turn into a big box office win.

When,in the last decade, did a Clint Eastwood (without Clint as an actor) movie pass the 100 millions$ mark domestically?
Invictus, J Edgar, Changeling,Herafter , all starring bigger names than Cooper, were all in the 30-40 millions zone for grosses in the US.

For an Eastwood movie without Eastwood actually on the screen, yes, such numbers come as a surprise. So if Cooper and his agent did their homework beforehands, they probably anticipated numbers along those lines.

      • The Original G says:

It’s not logical to think that anyone would invest 60 mil + marketing in a film that would only gross 30-40 tops?

Plus, as you know that 30-40 mill number is domestic. They did much better worldwide.

      • manta says:

        @The original G.
Yes I know that’s domestic (in fact pretty sure I wrote it). Domestically Eastwood movies, like any movie nowadays, gross more out of the US. So yes, I maintain that for this one making more than 200 millions IN the US is a surprise.
And there’s a difference between what they hope and what they know is expectable.
Anyone who studied previous Eastwood movies, as Cooper obviously did, must be surprised.
Changeling: 55 millions budget(production), 36 millions grossed in the US (and Angelina Jolie, bigger name than Cooper)

Hereafter:50 millions budget, 30 millions grossed in the US (and Matt Damon, bigger name than Cooper)

Invictus: 60 millions budget,37 or 38 millions grossed in the US (and Matt Damon and Freeman etc…)
I have only informations about production budgets though, and don’t know about marketing as much as you do.
So, it was not unreasonable to think American Sniper would perform like those ones and not reach such a peak. But obviously you’re more insightful since you totally saw it coming.

And American Sniper , given the personality of his hero is targeted for an American audience. Not sure,it’ll make more bucks worlwide than in the US.

  10. Esmom says:

NO! Not the back view…I was doing ok until the last shot, lol.

I’m not a fan but I like what he had to say here, both about vets and the appalling lack of support and care they get here, and about the process he went through to get into character. Much better/more interesting than typical celeb fluff interviews.

I’d also believe he wouldn’t anticipate the controversy, people in Hollywood are sort of self absorbed that way. Plus he really seemed to be blind to most of Chris Kyle’s faults.

  11. AntiSocialButterfly says:

    Hellllllo Lieutenant Dangle!!!!!

  12. Mar says:

I thought he was so believable in the movie. He really became someone else. Great actor.

  13. scout says:

Oh that shorty shorts and twisted legs!

Me too, surprised about all that hating for the movie. RIP Chris Kyle, you are a hero and BCoop did justice playing him.

    • Jenny says:

You’re surprised that people are hating on a movie that sanitized the life of a psycho who lied throughout his entire autobiography to seem like a superhuman hero?

  14. Jenny says:

We all would have been better of if no one watched or cared.

Stories about veterans and dealing with PTSD are VERY important. But Chris Kyle was a racist liar (who was probably a borderline sociopath) and his story should’ve disappeared forever.

  15. kibbles says:

I’m a northern liberal so in no way do I fit in the demographic of the stereotypical patriotic Texan who is pro-gun and pro-war. That being said, I thought Bradley Cooper did a wonderful job in the role of Chris Kyle and deserves his Oscar nomination. I wouldn’t be mad if he won the Oscar although I can see how that would cause even more controversy and that it is a politically motivated. I just think he did a great job as an actor. I don’t even think the fake baby was that big of a deal although Eastwood should have just gone the extra mile and pay someone a thousand bucks to borrow her baby for an hour.

  16. FingerBinger says:

It’s awards season and I see Bradley is in full humble bragging mode.

  17. MrsBPitt says:

This is one thing that drives me CRAZY!!! A movie is a movie…NOT a history lesson! So many people come out of movies based on real people or real events, and BELIEVE ITS ALL TRUE!!!!!! These are ENTERTAINMENT movies, people! The directors, writers, studios, all take entertainment license! They change FACTS in order to make the movie more entertaining!!!!! I’m not just talking about this movie…ALL MOVIES DO IT! Ok, end of rant!

I saw this movie, and I didn’t care for it…I felt like Director, Clint Eastwood, had this movie going at such a sloooow pace (when will Clint retire, FFS)….The wife was nothing more than a whiny brat…and it didn’t make me cry! I cry at sad tv commercials…and Braley Cooper was good…not great! Jake Gyllenhal was better in Night Crawler…wish he had gotten the Oscar nom instead of BC. Don’t get me wrong, I respect and honor our troops, and can’t imagine the hell our vets have gone through…but, as a MOVIE, I didn’t find Sniper, all the great!

  18. SamiHami says:

Chris Kyle was an American hero in the truest sense of the word. It makes me sad to read the ugly, hate-filled posts vilifying him.

Cooper definitely deserves the Oscar nomination, and deserves to win. I had no idea he was such a fantastic actor. I have always liked him well enough but never thought too much about him. After seeing AS, I have a new found respect for his talent. I hope to see him in more great roles now that he’s proven himself.

    • Jenny says:

I had no idea that true American heroes were lying cowards who bragged about killing people.

    • Neonscream says:

It is not ugly or hate filled to point out that Kyle was a demonstrated liar and racist. The words used to show this are most often his own.

The Iraqis he was shooting at were in their own country, had never posed any risk to American citizens and had every right to be shooting at the invading and occupying force. They were not savages or barbarians, they were defending their home.

  19. kim says:

I get that Ellar Coltrane saying the same thing, but Bradley, you’re lying.

  20. Dirty Martini says:

The fake baby was annoying as shit in the movie. What was really a critical scene was completely freakin’ ruined by the distraction of that hot mess. Having said that, here I go with what is certainly going to be annoying to someone: Bradley Cooper was phenomenal in the role. He absolutely, positively deserved his Oscar nom. I’m not here to refute that others also were deserving…..but others being deserving doesn’t mean BC wasn’t. The man is a truly gifted actor and in my opinion–has earned each of his Oscar noms. And how here it really goes….I’m annoyed at all the obnoxious trash talk over the story, over Chris Kyle, the “Murica” references, etc. I’m over 50 years old. Ive seen most of this country. I’ve interacted with all types of individuals …..and the beautify of diversity is to accept people of all types — including southern, God loving, gun toting, flag waving white men. I’m aggravated at the obnoxious hubris of making fun of any one who thinks differently than you do. There is beauty and their own truth in people who are different than you. Get off your high horse. You don’t have to agree. But really–you also don’t have to be a completely judgmental a-hole either. You aren’t a better or smarter person when you do that. The world is full of all types, and lots and lots of gray. Be wiser — not a wiseass — and use your gray matter.

  21. Calli says:

    @jenny
You are a piece of work, my friend. As a Navy and Air Force Mom, it’s truly unfortunate what you obviously have failed to learn about RESPECT for the men and women who are willing to lay down their lives so you can reveal your ignorance behind a computer keyboard. Two minutes on the battlefield and you’d be crying for your Mama, or someone like Chris Kyle to save your ass. You aren’t worthy to lick the bottom of his boots. Enjoy your freedom, Child.

  22. Spin says:

I guess this is directed to the writer of this article. Just to say that what Mr. Cooper is honestly saying is the response to any movie, project, tv series etc. is very unpredictable. He’s experienced “expected” hits enough that did not fly. You can put all you got in and still …..(like A-Team), and Kitchen Confidential is great but still did not fly. It’s timing, the times, fickle people??? who knows. I like “All About Steve”, but don’t think America was ready for Sandra Bullock in that role so it was knocked badly. Hangover was not expected to be SO so successful. So BCoop did not foresee the blow up controversy and huge box office draw on American Sniper. Competition is fierce. Mr. Eastwood’s recent “Jersey Boys” did not have the success one might expect of an Eastwood movie. It followed the real life facts rather tightly and while I totally enjoyed it, the critics knocked it for not being somehow more dramatic and big scale.
As to Bradley Cooper’s looks, I think he’s being straight about it, thinks he can be quite attractive but figures he can look otherwise too. Despite all the horrific crappy stuff dropped in these comment places, I think the combination of what emanates from this man, through his physical makes him a stand out. Totally seductive. The first time I actually “saw” him was in Silver Linings and then I was done. In SLP as in American Sniper, he wants it to mean something good for people needing help. To highlight this (funding and care for vets) to start conversation is great but I’d bet he’s not happy to see people going off at each other. Well they DID NOT do a documentary, they based a “movie” on a true life Navy Seal. And I don’t think the time Kyle spent on the phone home was too off having seen some real footage of troops in “modern” times.
As Eastwood and Cooper have both said, maybe repeatedly, the movie is not to promote war. Given global events, this movie comes when we all may unwillingly be closer to war. My biggest hope for Mr. Cooper is continued success, Oscar …could be nice and that he doesn’t need to contort and morph forever, that he protect his health.
