Margot Robbie in Saint Laurent at the Oscars: sultry or too underdone?

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie brought the glamour last night in a black Saint Laurent gown that highlighted her bombshell looks. I think this dress was the perfect combination of formal and sexy. The plunging neckline dared to reveal too much, but it was balanced out by the long, sheer sleeves. She looked sophisticated and like she took her presenting duties seriously. Margot’s necklace is Van Cleef & Arpels. The sapphires give a nice pop of color.

My god, she’s just gorgeous. Margot’s complained about her “toothpaste” good looks. There’s nothing to complain about here. She’s a stunning import from down under. She can pull off a bold red lip and a sleek bob with a deep side part. Flawless.

Here’s what Margot wore to the Vanity Fair party. It must have been the night of the circus tents, but this dress had a flattering silhouette.

Chrissy Teigen was every inch the model in this pale blue Zuhair Murad gown. This dress skated on the edge of a wardrobe malfunction, but I suspect double-sided tape did its job well. Chrissy styled this opulent gown well with sultry makeup and rumply curls. John Legend was a Gucci man. He and Common brought down the house during their “Glory” performance. As Kaiser mentioned, grown men were moved to tears.

Guiliana Rancic wore a fussy red Mireille Dagher gown that matched the E! flowers. The top part of this dress looks itchy, but the bottom flowed well.

Jennifer Hudson wore a yellow Romona Keveza gown that was a little bit blah. Peplums ruin everything! Jennifer’s emerald earrings were a nice touch. She performed “I Can’t Let Go” during the “in memoriam” part of the show.

America Ferrera wore a Grecian-inspired Jenny Packham in forest green. The ombre fade into a sky blue mini-train was unexpected, but I like it. The only thing throwing off this look is the odd turquoise earrings.

Jennifer Hudson’s dress is the only one I like here. And the yellow wasn’t pukey.

    • Bridget says:

J Hud’s gown isn’t anything spectacular on its own but the fit is fantastic.

      Chrissy’s dress should be burned.

Margot looked gorgeous. I loved the whole ensemble.

  2. OriginalTessa says:

Margot looked awesome. A modern Grace Kelly. Gorgeous.

  3. Marianne says:

I loved Margot’s hair, makeup and necklace. Dress not so much. I think the sleeves needed to be removed, plus it also looked like she was a couple seconds away from flashing herself.

  4. EC says:

Margot Robbie looked AMAZING and I would do bad things for that necklace. She can WORK a pose to. Loved it.

I can forgive so much from Chrissy, who I think is hilarious and fun, but that dress is beyond tacky, no? Its figure skater adjacent and her tape was truly doing god’s work.

    • vauvert says:

Yes to everything. I turned on the tv just as Chrissy and John were on the RC being interviewed and both my husband and son were like “no idea who she is but leave some of it at home”.

    • V4Real says:

When did Chrissy get her boobs done?

    • lucy2 says:

I didn’t like hers either. Definitely ice skater-ish, and too revealing. I think if you do the plunging neckline, you need less exposed leg, or vice versa.

    • Lucy says:

Margot Robbie is so gorgeous, her face is amazing mouth , eyes…. love the whole look, dress necklace ….really she throw back to 50’s bombshell .

  5. smee says:

Hot damn – Margot Robbie knows how to work a plunging neckline! Beautiful dress. Don’t love that stiff looking necklace.

Jennifer Hudson looks so sophisticated. Her peplum is understated and flattering. That soft shade of yellow is great on her.

  6. JB says:

I disagree about Chrissy Teigen. I thought the dress made her look heavy and the makeup made her look old – neither of which is actually the case! Just too much of everything for me.

  7. a cut above says:

Margot Robbie is crazy lovely. I wasn’t a fan of the curtain tassel necklace and the ultra red lips, though. But her red carpet dress definitely had a glamorous, old Hollywood vibe.

  8. Alex says:

Really like Jennifer’s dress, lovely cut and fit and color looks nice on her. She’s come a long way.

  9. Jenny says:

I want to slap Margot’s stylist. She’s one of the most beautiful women out there, with a great big personality, and her stylist always puts her in total crap. It’s so annoying! That striped dress is particularly awful.

    Justice4Margot lol

  10. Wow Margot! Hollywood glamor!

  11. Talie says:

Margot was my fav of the night — hard to go wrong in that Michelle Pfeiffer Scarface look when you’re a wispy blonde.

  12. Kitten says:

You have to be a really gorgeous woman to pull off a lipstick shade like that.

  13. Ethelreda says:

Margot was definitely my favourite of the night. In a mostly blah red carpet, hers was the only one to give me a ‘wow’ moment. Her after party dress was also beautiful.

And strange though it may sound, I think Margot’s slightly bland ‘toothpaste model’ looks help her here. She doesn’t have very distinct features, so she can easily be transformed by make-up and hair styling. She looks every inch the classic Hollywood blonde here.

  14. mia girl says:

    Margo Robbie looked amazing.

Meanwhile, hated Rancic’s dress and I just can’t watch her anymore. She doesn’t look healthy and her commentary gets worse every show.

In fact that whole E! red carpet team needs an overhaul. It’s stale. And who let a Kardashian talk fashion at the Oscars FFS?!
The only one I like is Ross Matthews.

    • vava says:

      I liked the necklace.

Rancic looked better than she had recently. It’s good she wasn’t wearing a strapless gown and covered up. Also her hair color was an improvement, too.

Ugh on Khloe Kardashian being with the E! team. She looked like a real mess, I thought.

    • Diana B says:

Yes!!!! I was so freaking annoyed with Khloe’s commentary. To her, no dress looked right for the Oscar’s, maybe a date or a wedding but not the Oscar’s. And she kept saying it for everyone and I kept thinking every time “who the f*ck are you to talk? you can’t even dress your self and your butt of lies and you’re going to critique other people’s fashion?” Okay, rant over. I was just really irritated by the E! coverage.

  15. Tig says:

Absolutely loved the necklace-she said on red carpet it once belonged to the Duchess of Windsor? I was pretty underwhelmed by Jennifer’s musical number. She can belt with the best, but I couldn’t even understand what she was saying.

  16. Sabrina says:

Margot’s hair, make-up & jewellery is great although I don’t like her dress.

America’s dress looks great on her.

  17. Veritas says:

I’m so glad GR went darker for her hair color. That blonde on her was not cute. Now if we can only get her to eat something cus she’s still too skinny. She looks like jack skellington. #toothin

  18. dr mantis toboggan says:

Margot Robbie looks fantastic and was, in my opinion, the best dressed of the night. Old school Hollywood glamour, worked the plunging neckline without having her tits hanging out (ahem jlo) and somehow managed to pull off that unique necklace. Absolute winner

    • boredblond says:

Agree..the dress, makeup..necklace worked because dress wasn’t fussy..I loved the look. Glam without being over-glittered.

  19. pretty says:

she and emma stone look alike!

  20. Lurker says:

I thought America Ferrera’s dress was okay, but unflattering in the chest. Gave her pancake boob. Has Margot Robbie shaved a few years off her age? I am suspicious. She looked great though.

    • Ethelreda says:

People have been asking that question ever since Margo came on the scene. I doubt she is lying about her age, but I do agree that she looks way older than 24.

      • Lurker says:

Yeah, it’s totally possible she has a more mature look than her age. Like Catherine ZJ, and age questions dog her too. As an aside, that new Will Smith/Margot Robbie movie looks terrible and the title is terrible too.

    • lucy2 says:

I really liked America’s, the color is gorgeous, and on TV the top looked fine – but in still photos there is a weird flattening effect there.

  21. paola says:

I still believe Margot Robbie was one of the best last night. She looked stunning and effortlessly chic.

  22. woohoo says:

Margot is drop dead gorgeous. I can just stare at her all day. Is it bad that I rather look at beautiful women than men? And I’m totally straight.

    • Naddie says:

Same here. I could stare at women all day, still they don’t turn me on as (some) men do.

    • Lucy says:

Not at all!! The exact same thing happens to me. I think it’s something that comes from a place of admiration and appreciation rather than attraction and/or desire.

  23. scout says:

Margot R is so young, don’t need to cover up in black so much but still looks cute. love her necklace, damn I want it.

  24. I Choose Me says:

Jennifer Hudson and America Ferrera wins it for me. Margot is undeniably a beautiful woman and yet I don’t find her face interesting or memorable at all.

  25. InvaderTak says:

I kinda don’t like the necklace. The tassel part doesn’t work for me because it is partially hanging, partially resting on her chest. And I don’t like the navy/cobalt blue with the black dress. A platinum or dove gray with blueish undertones would have worked better for me. Plain enough to showcase the jewels but also work with them,

  26. Naddie says:

Margot looked amazing, with this red lipstick and all. Jennifer Hudson should have a closet filled with yellow outfits, because the color looks great on her.

  27. Grant says:

Jennifer looks stunning. Love that yellow. Hate the sleeves on Margot’s dress. It ruins the whole look for me.

  28. TrixC says:

Margot is stunning, one of the best looks of the night. I also like Jennifer Hudson and America Ferrara’s dresses, although America’s earrings didn’t match and I wish she had done something different with her hair. Has she lost a lot of weight or is that dress just super flattering?

I don’t really know who Chrissy Teigen is but everything about that dress is just horrible.

  29. Tracy says:

I think Chrissy is such a true beauty. Bone structure, hair, legs, all of it. But is it me or are her boobs sitting practically at her waist? Girl, it’s time for tape or a bra.

  30. M.J. says:

Margot looked fantastic, and I LOVED her necklace!

  31. kri says:

Margot was gorgeous. But those sleeves sent me into a rage. I hate that sheer thing, esp. in that way. I want to rip those sleeves off and set them on fire. However, that necklace! Sigh. So beautiful. Chrissy Teigen-I look at her and she irritates me. But then John Legend makes me happy.

  32. FlowerintheAttic says:

Jon Legend’s wife looked like hot trash last night. legs or boobs, not both unless you’re going to the grammy’s or some MTV function.

  33. bettyrose says:

I love that – except for JLo – all the Oscar looks were about glamour. Mostly solid color dresses with classic styling. Very few navel plunging necklines and vagina flashing leg slits. I love Liberty Ross’s Oscar look, and to think two days ago she was flashing her school girl white panties.

  34. Gwen says:

I feel like I am the only one who thinks Margot looked way, way too .. something. She’s such a pretty woman and seems to be sun a fun person too – on the red carpet she’s always styled to heavily though and her posing is overdone. To me she always ends up looking like she’s trying to hard. She needs a new stylist IMO.

    • I'm With The Band says:

Margot is undeniably very attractive, but her styling always makes her look much older than she is. Apart from her awesome hair, I didn’t rate her look at all.

  35. Size Does Matter says:

Margo’s black and white dress immediately made me think of Cameron Diaz in the Mask. Anybody else remember that dress? I always loved it.

  36. sassnbelle1 says:

I thought she looked amazing and for me, that dress stood out. It was chic and very different than what we’re used to seeing at the Oscars. I think she nailed it!

  37. Lucy says:

I know Margot doesn’t think so (or so she says) but IMO she really has something that makes her stand out from the rest. Something beyond her physical beauty. And obviously, her talent is undeniable. I just wish she had more opportunities to display it.

  38. Camille (The Original) says:

    Margot looks stunning. Love it.

  39. Jag says:

    She looks stunning!
