Did Iggy Azalea kill her arena tour by refusing to do publicity?

Iggy Azalea

Here are some photos of Iggy Azalea pouting on a horse in Calabasas a few days ago. These are a nice change from red carpet pics, no? Only last month, Iggy Azalea bragged to GQ magazine about her staying power and her upcoming first arena tour. Iggy talked about how hard she worked on stage design. She was excited to engage with her fans. Then Iggy kept getting into Twitter fights over substantive issues. She eventually quit social media over superficial stuff.

I expected Iggy to take some time away from the spotlight. She started giving radio interviews about how she deserved respect from other rappers, and she would have rejected a Grammy. Now Iggy’s attitude has jeopardized her 24-date, cross-country arena tour. The Wrap broke a story about Iggy’s deep riff with her “core team” (T.I.). She’s reportedly “increasingly unresponsive to her management and refuses to engage in promotion.” Iggy refuses to talk about her music to the media. She’s only complaining. Tickets weren’t selling, and her opening acts (Nick Jonas and Tinashe) weren’t happy.

After the Wrap released their exclusive, Billboard dropped a bomb. Iggy’s tour has been officially rescheduled to begin in the fall (instead of April). Def Jam Recordings simply says, “to accommodate for creative team availability and tour productions, it was determined that the tour will not be ready this spring.” The opening acts walked and won’t return.

Iggy’s a pill, but objectively, I wonder why anyone believed Iggy could pull off an arena tour. Iggy broke some Billboard records last year, but all of her hit singles are duets. What was she planning on doing — carting several artists along with her during the entirety of the tour?

Bye girl. Until next time.

Iggy isn’t big enough to do arenas. A couple of hit songs doesn’t mean you can fill that many seats, especially considering Iggy is new and it’s her first tour. She should have booked venues at least half that size.

    • Lb says:

Didn’t see your comment before I the same thing below. 🙂

24 cities times however many people each arena holds assumes that a majority of her hardcore fans will be paying to watch her on tour. That’s unlikely given the cost. Way too ambitious.

  2. Katie says:

Complain loud enough about how you don’t get respect when you clearly weren’t willing to do the work to earn it and the biz will show you what they really think of you

  3. Lb says:

Filling an arena is harder than it looks. Madonna, the Stones, Eminem, etc etc make it look easy but its not – you need a mix of old and new fans. Having one or two recent hit songs won’t do it.

    • NerdMomma says:

And a strong opener always helps. Nick Jonas wasn’t going to pull any major ticket sales.

      • HH says:

I can’t think of a strong opener who wouldn’t be on Iggy’s level. She actually should be an opener for someone else’s arena tour. Or she would have to do a joint tour.

  4. Shambles says:

As soon as I read this on dlisted last night I thought, “she’s done and she knows she’s done.” But at the same time, she has the self awareness of a piece of lint, so who knows.

  5. Jules says:

Gee another corporate creation of a ‘singer’ explodes again……….

  6. paola says:

I hope her five minutes will be over soon. Maybe this is the first crack of her rising empire. The attitude she has really isn’t going to help when it comes to fill up arenas.

  7. Imo says:

Iggy’s biggest problem is her combative, entitled personality. I can’t understand this lack of basic gratitude and humility from celebrities when there are countless other struggling artists who would give anything for a shot at the big time. This is what happens when a barely talented narcissist gains stardom without paying dues, imo. The industry needs to stop watering this azalea.

  8. Loopy says:

Arena Tour is very ambitious for a one hit wonder another reason would be Nicki Minaj is also about to go on tour until September, at least Nicki has enough hits and guaranteed cameos through out her dates.

    • Nicki sold out both of her shows in Paris next week. I’m really sad I’m not going but I don’t think it’s fair to put Nicki and Iggy in the same league. Nicki’s been around almost a decade. Any fans Iggy has now wouldn’t know her old music. But I think she probably lost all of her old fans (like me). Anyone I know who used to listen to her, we all agree her new music sucks.

      • StripedSea says:

Are you referring to her old music as in when she was kind of like a Britney act? Or did she have some underground “hip-hop” that she put out before she broke big?

      • jaye says:

I think she was know underground before she broke for real.

  9. Cecada says:

i bet that horse is thinking, ‘did this trick put two saddles on my back? Feels like at least two saddles….’

  10. lucy2 says:

It always interesting/sad to watch people claw themselves up to a certain level, and then shoot themselves in the foot. I feel bad for all the truly talented, hardworking musicians out there who can’t catch a break but watch this sort of thing play out again and again.

    • Cecada says:

I guess for some, the only real talent they possess is clawing thier way up; once they get there they don’t know what to do with it. Actually applies outside showbiz too

  11. Adrien says:

Her team thinks she’s bigger than she actually is. I don’t think she’s a household name yet. I remember a few radio stations crediting Fancy to Charli XCX ( feat. Iggy). Internet notoriety does not always equal popularity in real life.

  12. Jayna says:

Arenas were always too big for her with such weak supporting acts.

  13. Alexis says:

If you’re talentless, at least be kind and gracious. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but take a page out of the Kardashian playbook. By all accounts, Kim Kardashian is very sweet and humble behind the scenes. I’ve heard she never, ever blows off fans. She’s always on time and professional.

If you’re hard to deal with, you won’t stick around. It’s hard enough to reasonably talented people who are difficult to have staying power. The easy examples are Izzy from Grey’s and Monique, but their talent is debatable. I think the best example is that Ed Norton has struggled with getting work because of his reputation for being a divo on set.

    • Tiffany says:

Ed Norton is a great example of someone who is extremely talented who crashed, hard. The smartest thing that he did was just to go away, focus on other aspects of his life and his charity.
Also, he has kept his mouth shut on several things which was also smart as well. He is starting to get work again and the diva rumors are not swirling.

I don’t think think that Iggy or Monique should keep quiet, they should get practice on how to be firm and assertive without coming across combative and unpleasant.

      • Loopy says:

Well this is news to me, Ed’s team have obviously done a good job on keeping this quiet.

      • Pinky says:

Eds dbag behavior was well known years ago. Going away helped I think. That and the fact that guys are generally quickly forgiven for bad behavior. He lost the Hulk to Mark Ruffalo precisely because he fights the directors vision, makes off the cuff script changes, shuts out producers etc and does it all with the self aggrandizing idea that he knows better than the people who actually hired him.

Going away helps. Go away Iggy.

      • tifzlan says:

I’ve never heard the stories about Ed Norton! Any examples? He just seems like a nice person to me.

      • Pinky says:

Tifzlan just search for him, there should be plenty of stories online. I know Marvel was pretty clear on why he was being sacked. And I remember he fought with Anthony Hopkins on the Hannibal sequel because he would rewrite a scene without consulting anybody and refuse to recite the lines from the script he actually signed on for. For American History X, the director said that Ed forced producers to let him re- edit it to give himself more screen time. I know there are also a bunch of screen writers who don’t want him ever signed on their films because he signs on, insists on re- writing during production when it’s too late to release him and then demands screen writing credit. I think it’s Joe Esterhaz who joked that none of Eds original screenplays go anywhere and he insists of flipping around other people’s writing so he can claim the success for himself.

I mean this guy is a very talented actor the fact that his career splattered as it did is a big clue that he was doing something very wrong. And to be clear, Iggy is not on the same level of talent for sure.

      • Insomniac says:

True about Norton. My nephew didn’t believe me when I told him that Norton’s “Birdman” character wasn’t far off of his real life reputation.

      • Bridget says:

There was a huge fight when Ed tried to take credit for re-writing The Incredible Hulk. Thrre was pretty much no question of him being cast in The Avengers.

  14. ToodySezHey says:

    5 minutes left and counting.

    Bye , Felicia.

  15. Kitten says:

    Um, is she horseback-riding?
    #thuglife

  16. Amy says:

Perhaps it’s because all of her singles were with other members of the thirst brigade and as someone said you can’t go on a stage and sing ‘Fancy’ for two hours.

She doesn’t have a strong presence or persona, all her success was based off her first few singles, and those singles were done with people who are either too new or too desperate.

If she’s got a brain cell left she’ll stop whining and start putting in the work to be a legitimate hip hop act. Otherwise she’ll have a career crash faster than Lady Gaga.

  17. Wendy says:

I wish people would leave her alone. She’s as good as any other female rapper imo. But just like Vanilla Ice back in the day, no one is comfortable with a mainstream white (female) rapper yet. Eminem was fortunate to have Dr Dre in his corner to promote him. TI helped Iggy but I don’t know if rap lovers consider him as legendary. Stay strong Iggy!

    • Kim1 says:

WOW comparing her to one hit wonder Vanilla Ice? I thought you were a fan. He’s the only white rapper you could come up with? LOL

      • Wendy says:

        I am a fan! It’s the criticism that she’s getting that’s comparative.

      • Bridget says:

That’s a poor endorsement if the best you can say is “she’s just as good as the other female rappers out there”. For one thing, women are woefully under-represented in mainstream rap, and the women who do breal through are significantly more talented than Iggy. And second, Iggy has had an incredible amount of promotion – she’s an attractive white woman, and has been given coverage and exposure most new artists could only dream of – but she puts out a weak product and her grating personality only manages to dig her further I the hole. Postponing a tour like this is a REALLY bad sign, especially for an artist that’s gotten as much radio play as Iggy has gotten, because it means that people simply aren’t buying her tickets. And can you blame them? Of any of the songs that she’s charted in the last year, is she ever the best part or the part that people like most? She’s filler until the hooks on her own album.

    • Amy says:

…I’m always so confused when I hear someone take a stand in something and be that woefully uninformed. Well you’re right about one thing, TI is not considered legendary at all.

  18. T. Fanty Fan says:

Nice horse. That’s all I’ve got.

  19. Sara says:

I have mixed feelings about Iggy. I like some of her music and I think she can make mesmerizing music videos (her video for ‘work’ was really great) but I have serious issues with her attitude and cultural appropriation. I don’t find an Australian rapping with an affected ‘black’ voice to be ok. Like it’s something I thought a lot about and while hip hop can be for everyone I don’t think the way Iggy is doing it is ‘ironic’ or cool. I think she disrespects a lot of other artists and American history, especially American black history with her ignorance. When I think about it, the only song that’s very good she did alone is ‘Work’ and that’s not enough to carry a tour. The rest of her music is just mediocre at best. I hope she ends up being a two hit wonder and disappears for good.

  20. Iheartgossip says:

Man oh man is she unfortunate looking.

  21. nikzilla says:

I bought and liked her album but arena tour? Please girl. You’d be lucky to fill Radio City. I also think TI is slowly distancing himself. He made his money so mission accomplished.

  22. Chellbelle says:

I think she bit off way more than she can chew. A sold out 24 city arena tour, wishful thinking. Most of her hits have been duets, how is she going to pull that off? Also she doesn’t have stage presence when she performs. I will admit I’m not a fan, I don’t think her attitude helps her either.
I’m glad she left her Twitter account for someone else to manage, it might have prolonged her career a little longer, but I honestly don’t see her having any staying power. She’s too ungrateful for someone who’s only just started in the main industry. You wait until you’ve been in years and established before you can start with that bs before you can get away with it, to some degree.

Many talented unknowns just waiting to be signed up. At this point she is disposable. “Know your place Iggy”
