Anne Hathaway in talks to play Judy Garland

People talk a lot of smack about Judy Garland. History hasn’t always been kind to her – it seems that every year there’s some new revelation about Judy Garland’s drug usage, her (lack of) mothering skills, her bad finances and her bad marriages. But the woman was a star, and her struggles and multiple comebacks and falls from grace have earned her a place in diva history.

I’ve always thought that one of the reasons drag queens were so eager to embrace Judy was the simple fact that she was outrageously talented and incredibly ambitious, yet she wasn’t a stunner. She wasn’t one of those women who had a beautiful face that opened a thousand doors, and I’ve always thought that was her appeal. Not that she wasn’t pretty, because she was. But she wasn’t gorgeous, and her appeal was her cuteness, her spunk, her attitude.

Anyway, Hollywood is going to make another movie about Judy, this time based on one of her many biographies, Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland. Anne Hathaway is said to be in talks to star as Judy. The Daily Mail has more:

Hollywood starlet Anne Hathaway is in talks to play her movie idol Judy Garland in an upcoming film based on Gerald Clarke’s biography, Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland.

The 26-year-old actress is so desperate to appear in the movie – which charts Judy’s rise to fame and her struggle with drink and drugs – that she may have to sacrifice other projects, which include a lead role in a comedy called The Fiance.

The Weinstein Company has optioned the film and stage rights to the Garland story.
A Tinseltown insider says: ‘Anne dearly wants to do a musical and this could be her chance.

‘The big attraction is that it really will be her singing, not recordings of Judy. She is determined to do it justice.

‘If she nails the part, she will be a shoo-in for some big awards.’

From The Daily Mail

Anne Hathaway has a lot of the same qualities as Judy Garland – she’s talented and ambitious, without being drop-dead gorgeous. She has a cuteness, a vulnerability mixed with bad luck and bad taste in men. They even have the same kind of sad, intelligent eyes. Anne is rather Judy Garland-esque, and I think if Anne signs on, it would be a brilliant choice.

Several years ago, there was a television-movie about Judy, going through the span of her life. They had a young Broadway actress portray the young Judy, then the incredible Judy Davis portrayed Judy Garland in her later years. Considering Anne Hathaway is the only one rumored to play Judy at this point, I suspect this film will deal with Judy’s life post-Wizard of Oz, but before the drugs really got to her.

I’ll definitley go see this movie, I’m interested in Judy, and Anne isn’t half bad either.

  2. audrey says:

i totally disagree.. she was a stunner!
I think what drew people in was her vulnerability.. I think she was absolutely gorgeous 🙂

  3. Alexis says:

It’s too bad Brittney Spears can’t act for shit because that would be an INCREDIBLE movie.
There is something about Anne Hathaway I don’t vibe with, I don’t know what it is.
Judy Davis was so AMAZING in the role. Can Anne Hathaway do that, without being annoying and mousy? We shall see.

  4. Shelly Shellz says:

Brittney Spears??? Really??????? I think Anne Hatheway is a dead ringer to for Ms. Garland. It’s the PERFECT choice

  5. neelyo says:

They’ve got it wrong. Anne should be playing Liza Minnelli. When they make that biopic, Hathaway will be a shoo-in for the role.

  6. viper says:

DEAR GOD NO! next Kightly is gonna play A Hepburn

  7. geronimo says:

Ditto Viper’s DEAR GOD NO! Seriously, is the current pool of H/W actresses so shallow that Hathaway is seen as the best option to play Judy Garland?

  8. Shelly Shellz says:

Blah, she is the besy option to play Garland

  9. Chiara says:

Good choice … any story of Judy Garland would not be complete without the insufferable abuse she suffered as a young woman from the studios.

Worth seeing, only if the project is honest.

  10. Mme X says:

I think she can do anything. As we saw at Oscars, she can sing, too. I’d line up to see it. She was amazing as Jane Austen.

  11. viper says:

The Oscars was a joke. TDK should have won nearly every category but everybody knows a movie on the holocaust is a promised win.

  12. nolongerhaydenfan says:

that would be a perfect choice!!! 😀

the original kate, I think I hated that movie more than you, if that’s even possible, lol. But I did watch “The Wiz” too many times to count.

  20. Aspen says:

Ooh! I like it! I think she can do it really well. I was fully prepared to detest Hathaway as Jane Austen…but she didn’t suck at all.

    This has potential, imo.

  21. eternalcanadian says:

they’re going to need someone to sing and dance if they’re going to make a movie about judy garland. the only time i’ve seen anne do both was in ella enchanted and it was horrible. the casting people need to look elsewhere for the person to play judy in that film.

  22. ash says:

I have always been the biggest Judy Garland fan. I have all of her books — love the sadness of her story.

I can’t imagine ANYONE portraying her in a movie. Okay so people think Anne can sing — but does she have the voice, vabrato and presence as Judy did?

It’s true — Anne always has been very mousy. Can anybody really get passed her doing those children movies?
