Kevin Jonas offers advice to Zayn Malik: ‘He should go dark for a long time’

Kevin Jonas

This isn’t a huge story, just something that made me chuckle. Kevin Jonas, who was the least remarkable member of the Jonas Brothers, is doing some press to promote his new app. The best bit of gossip I ever heard about Kevin is how he fell in love with (and married) a random woman who cut his hair. She didn’t know who the Jonas Brothers were! Danielle Deleasa has since gotten with the program, and she and Kevin do reality shows and have a baby girl, Alena Rose.

Back when the Jonas Brothers split, the drama wasn’t as heavy as the current 1D crisis. Lots of fans were still quite upset. My daughter pushed her Jonas magnets to separate corners of the refrigerator. (“They’re broken up,” she sadly said.) With the benefit of retrospect, Kevin has offered some unsolicited advice to Zayn Malik. These musings come after Zayn slammed Louis Tomlinson and called him “bitchy.” Kevin spoke with Elvis Duran (via People) to discuss some hard realities about the death of a boy band.

The big Jonas split: “Notice how when [the Jonas Brothers] went dark, we went dark. We didn’t do a single interview, we didn’t talk to anybody, we just went dark. I just got really depressed for a while. There’s a mourning process!”

Kevin still misses the band: “I miss touring. I miss seeing people on the road. I miss that adrenaline rush, there’s nothing like it. When you go out on stage … and you greet the crowd, there’s nothing like it.”

Is he “Jealous” of Nick’s solor career? “I don’t know how many times I literally hear this,” he said of the persistent rumors. “It’s the worst pun in the world from some idiotic frat guy. It’s like, ‘You must be ‘Jealous’ of Nick!’ .. Constantly! It’s like, why? He’s doing his thing. I’m doing mine! He’s happy. I’m happy.”

His advice to Zayn: “In the midst of that intensity, he should go dark for a long time. You gotta go dark for at least six weeks! Like, underground, you gotta go hard, like you’re done. … You have to let the dust clear. Anything you do then will be scrutinized.”

[From People]

This is actually very solid advice. The One Directioners weren’t pleased at Zayn’s outburst. He immediately lost almost 100,000 Twitter followers, and that number has likely grown. Zayn made the problem worse by begging his former fans come back. He tweeted, “Don’t know why I’m being attacked for defending myself , people got it twisted! I love my fans ?! Every single one of you.” Yeah … he really needs to hand his Twitter password over to a trusted party and re-cultivate some mystery.

He’s actually quite right. And I remember he did go dark for a while.

    • Fue McCormick says:

I agree, as well … but 6 weeks seems like a pretty short time to me. If someone said to me, “I haven’t picked up my mail for 6 weeks” I’d think that was a really long time, but when I saw the headline for this post I was thinking, yes … 6 months to a year …

  2. Shambles says:

Hasn’t he already gone dark? He shaved his lusciously magical, lady-killing mane. That was probably the darkest moment of his life.

  3. Rhiley says:

Wouldn’t the worst pun actually be, “Supposedly, your wife didn’t nose who the Joe Bros were before she met you. True?”

  4. original kay says:

They use “going dark” in Covert Affairs!

    CIA agents. funny. random.

  5. Myriam says:

Some of the responses of the 1D fans are hilarious, like:

“the answer is literally right beneath your tweet so i don’t know why you’re acting like Dora the explorer pic.twitter.com/qQnvNwhLXF

    — 1D Updates (@1dwwgossipgirls) May 7, 2015”

Bwah. But I do agree with the Jonas kid. He should’ve gone dark for a couple of months and cultivated that “normal 22 year old” sound byte he spat. It would have at least APPEARED authentic.

  6. Rocket says:

this is complicated. Zayn wants a solo career so he cant afford to be written off as villain or even worse forgotten, which is what would have happened had he completely disappeared after quiting. His current approach is fine. Afew low key appearances but head held high. Using this time to recreate his public image, the head shave was good in that regard.

Right now he need give an interview to a serious music outlet, perhaps a radio station. It should contain a sufficient amount on his new artistic direction but he needs to express gratitude for the boyband nonsense. I’m sure theres an NDA in place but he can throw some clever pre-scripted shade not at the band members but at the machine. Even the most hardcore fans are ambivalent about the management anyway, feed that and then exit stage left. Return shortly after with first single (preferably a collabo) and video.

    • Myriam says:

But what about being a normal 22 year old? Look, I have no bone in this fight because before this happened I didn’t know anyone but Harry and now I can safely say that I know and would recognize 3 of the 1D’ers. Small steps. I don’t begrudge him wanting to step out of the band boy light. It doesn’t last forever. Ask NKOTB, Backstreet Boys, and NSync (and I didn’t even include the 1-hit wonders), but his approach is WAY off. He basically left stage right when the rest of the band was performing, said, “I quit,” sent a memo to the world and his band mates that he wanted to be normal FINALLY, and walked into a studio to release a solo album with a producer who loves to engage in childish twitter wars whereas professional producers would do their music and keep it going. So nope. Approach is way off. But I am interested to see where this goes. I haven’t been this interested with 1D gossip since the Harry/Swift debacle. That was HILARIOUS!

    • serena says:

Nope I still think he should have gone dark. At least a month, then you go and talk about your solo projects and all. But if you do before it’s like he’s disrespecting the band and the fans (btw I’m not a 1D fan, lol).

  7. savu says:

I’ll admit I’ve seen the show. But I find Danielle so New Jersey that she cheapens everything she wears. Super jealous of the thick hair, though.

  8. Franca says:

The Jonas Brothers were family and 1D were four random guys who never met eachother before they became a band. That is nowhere near similar.

    • CK says:

Five random guys… there’s a fifth, but I’m too old (24) to actually know his name.

  9. CK says:

Not to be shady, but did Kevin Jonas really go dark out of choice? I feel like people just didn’t care what he did due to him being the 40 year old Jonas Brother. Didn’t he have to get a sponsor for his babies birth to get attention?
As for Zayn, going dark. I guess that would be the correct thing to do. I’m kind of enjoying the boy drama though so I’m hoping for a few more salvos between him and Louis, some major tea spilling (cocaine issues), and some crying fan youtube testimonials before he “reforms” (aka management comes in and shuts both sides down).

  10. Alex says:

Nah he’s right. All the JoBros did one interview about the split and then didn’t do anything for a while. And supposedly they were in a bad place and broke up so they wouldn’t hate each other later (Smart!). So I get what he’s saying. By the three of them not doing any press the news ran out and they were able to emerge unscathed which paves the way for Nick to go solo. It also helped them keep their family intact.

The 1D boys (well just a couple of them) are acting completely stupid. Zany should have never did the “normal life excuse” and just owned up to not being happy in the band. He is the most talented one aside from Harry and I wouldn’t have been surprised. But he should have finished out the tour and then left. Louis needs to stop acting like a 5 yr old with the Twitter swipes. He acts like that producer guy stole his boyfriend. Let it go

  11. Beep says:

I’ve read stuff about him being the ugly one and I’m like wtf he’s the cute one.kevin Jonas Is actually the cute and talented one .

    Can he sing? Serious question.

    • Anony says:

Have you seen his show? He is not attractive at all! Short, covered in large dark moles…no sex appeal whatsoever. There’s a reason he had to settle for horse face.

    • jwoolman says:

They all can sing and play instruments. I always thought they were good when I saw them on the Disney Channel. Their TV show was … well, acting is not their strong point and it was a dumb show. I have had no desire to watch Kevin’s “reality show”. But the music was good.

Nick was auditioning for a musical when he was a little kid and their mom brought the older boys along. The show was short on kid singers so she was asked if the other two could also sing. That’s how they got the job… But Nick was the one really always most interested in singing and originally he was going solo. Their parents were singers/musicians and taught them
all. When they toured as teens, the whole family went together (including their little brother) and the parentals kept things as normal as possible. Their parents seemed more interested in family than career, I didn’t get the stage parent vibe from them even though they were quite knowledgable about the business and willing to help the boys pursue it. The Jonas parentals were the ones who insisted that Demi Lovato leave the tour when she slugged a dancer and was obviously having drug problems. She was very popular and it was in the middle of a planned tour, so that impressed me. Lots of others would have covered up problems to finish the tour, but they got her on a plane to go home right away. That’s when she went to rehab.
