Jaden Smith wore a formal dress to escort Amandla Stenberg to prom

to all my loves: thanks for a great night

Jaden Smith hasn’t attended traditional school in several years, but he loves going to prom. He recently dressed as a caped superhero to escort a friend to her fanciest shindig. He attended another prom this past weekend with Hunger Games‘ Amandla Stenberg (she played the tragic Rue). Jaden’s made a habit of showing his fondness for wearing skirts and well-placed flowers. He combined all of these elements here.

I’m including several photos from Amandla’s Instagram. She and Jaden made a gorgeous couple (although they’re just friends, maybe). Jaden decided to go formal for this event with a long white skirt under a black tunic. The sneakers are okay, but combat boots would have been better. Some people think Jaden’s simply begging for attention, but he once told Billboard that he only dresses for himself: “If somebody is just wearing something for the blogs, that’s really sad because they’re not living for themselves, versus someone wearing a kimono who’s having an awesome time.” Most importantly, Jaden’s ensemble doesn’t overshadow Amandla’s dress. He’s just chilling and having a good time.

Hopefully, Jaden and Amandla danced the night away. His long formal skirt would prohibit quick movement, but there are few things that bring as much joy as a dancing Jaden Smith.

here's to highschool

sometimes I feel weird that I don’t feel weirder about a boy wearing skirts and dresses…

I know some people see it and think it looks weird…I haven’t gotten that feeling, even from this kinda weird kid.

Maybe it looks so much like JNCO jeans or something that it doesn’t ‘click’ in my head that its a dress or skirt LOL.

    • BengalCat2000 says:

I’m just glad it covers his junk, unlike that hippie who lived on my couch for 2 weeks in the mid 90’s. That was a terrible time for fashion. And I say this as a fan of grunge.

  2. Shambles says:

Amanda Stenberg is a goddess. I love her hair.

  3. kay says:

i think i love this young man..at least in a fashion sense. lol.
    go jaden. never stop.

  4. Amy says:

Not much comment on the dress (his – and is it even really a dress?) but I do wish every single girl would stop wearing the same nose ring.

Have celebrities always been this fashionably boring? I feel like they used to set trends and now I’ll see one celeb do something and see it mimicked ten-told in the next week.

I think they make a cute couple for the general look they’re going for; but his dress kinda sucked. Shapeless with no style while she looks gorgeous. If he’s gonna be wearing dresses then I hope he ups the ante beyond “Dude in a dress!” and actually makes them look good.

    • missmerry says:

I think things are mimicked beyond oblivion because EVERYBODY puts in online now.

We used to copy each other and only realize it weeks later or never realize it…now we can’t help but see the same trends over and over and over very quickly b/c it’s all on insta! (picture or it didn’t happen, right?) lol 😉

  5. tx_ava says:

other than the fact that the skirt is kind of an awkward length, he looks great & good for him for dressing for himself

    • Mare says:

He needs a stylist. This is not a formal dress. What he considers fashionable looks more like a sack.

  6. L says:

Jaden said he doesn’t do things for attention, so that must make it true. LOL

I don’t hate the kid and I don’t think he’s hurting anyone – he’s harmless and fairly irrelevant, really. But let’s stop playing naive and pretending that he’s not doing this all for attention.

He wants people to see him as ‘quirky’ and different, and it couldn’t be more obvious. He’s a ~ free spirit, you guys. It’s a bit try hard and there’s really nothing chill about him, but if it gets people talking and like I said he’s not hurting anyone, then who cares. Do you Jaden, whatever that means.

    • Pandy says:

Totally “look at ME ME ME” … but it’s not for attention.

    • AtlLady says:

Jaden is a kid having some age-appropriate, silly fun and good for him. He isn’t doing anything truly out of line while he is keeping his name out there. He has had to find his way without much parental guidance and could have easily become a “wild” child instead of a goofy, yet likeable, teenager. To me, he has become the most interesting Smith. (Plus, he gets props for wearing a white Batman suit to the Kimye wedding! How fun!)

      • Magpie says:

Yes altlady. He is just being a goofy kid, not drugging out or being a jerk. People need to cut him some slack.

  7. tx_ava says:

    & she is absolutely gorgeous

  8. Colette says:

I have no problem with him wearing dress or skirt but that outfit is hideous. He dresses like my elderly neighbor.

  9. LadyMTL says:

As much as Jaden Smith makes my eyes roll, he doesn’t look TOO bad here, I like the black and white. And Amandla is stunning; they make a really cute pair.

  10. Mixtape says:

I think they both look great here, and it’s a much more cohesive look than the Batman/traditional prom dress combo of a few weeks ago. I would love to see more kids drop the tux and ruffles hoopla and use it as a chance to express themselves and kind of document their personalities at that time in their life.

  11. QQ says:

So Jaden is Out Taking the Little Ladies to Prom and Serving LOOKs in the Process?? Oh OK Go On Buddy!

Amandla had a Kickass School presentation that went viral about Appropriation, She is So On point and aware , Such a Stunning young gal

    • Amy says:

Her presentation about appropriation was on point to the gods and I’m disappointed it wasn’t covered here. Girl laid out the facts like it was a dissertation.

    • I Choose Me says:

She’s gorgeous imo and yikes, they grow up fast. Loved her speech about cultural appropriation. Eloquent and so on point.

  12. Cynthia says:

Just wanted to say that I love Amandla!! She’s gorgeous and already so smart and conscious for her young age!

  13. Chinoiserie says:

Um. What happened to little Rue?

  14. Farah says:

It’s funny remembering these are Kylie’s age group. Not the Tyga’s and Chris Brown’s of the world.

  15. FingerBinger says:

He’s trying to be edgy. How about being edgy and getting an education.

  16. Mia4S says:

LOL…OK Jaden, OK. *pats him on the head, gives him a cookie, and sends him on his way*

  17. bella says:

jaden is a unique and cool kid, i think.
and, yeah, he absolutely does it for the attention…no doubt there.

not sure why, but he irks me.
could be because of his parents’ devotion to the COS.

i wonder, too, if will & jaden’s supposed impending divorce – for real this time – is impacting jaden in a negative way causing him to seek out more attention than usual.

  18. MARKWEER says:

I don’t have a problem with most of the attention seeking stuff he does. I’m a little peeved at the fact that as anti-school as he claims to be he still has no problem attending the good parts of it like prom.

  19. Dr.Funkenstein says:

Sorry kid, you ain’t gonna start a trend.

  20. JenniferJustice says:

If he is only dressing for himself and not for attention, why does he choose to wear these outfits to prom and not just out and about when he’s usually still wearing pants or shorts? Sorry, but he’s in denial about his need for attention, otherwise he would let the ladies have the spotlight on their prom nights. When I see a pic of him in a skirt where he’s not at some big function, I’ll accept he’s just being himself, but for now all I see is attention-grabbing outfits when he’s going to be photographed while dressing like every other kid when he’s not being photographed.

  21. Alexis says:

They both look great! I really like Jaden’s fashion sense. I don’t get while some are up in arms about a man who is wearing anything other than pants or shorts. It’s not a sign of not being masculine in many (maybe even most) cultures. And Amandla is so pretty!

  22. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree with what he said about dressing for yourself, and I thought the way he said was cute. He often grates on me, but not this time.

  23. G says:

Well it looks and sounds to me like he took the most beautiful girl in school. So, yeah there’s that. Go ‘head Jaden do your thang!

  24. I Choose Me says:

Him and his ‘duh’ face used to bug me but now he’s really growing on me. Kid may just turn out okay.

    • thelazylioness says:

Same here. I think his fashion choices are brave. I hope this kid gets out of Scientology and does something important with his life. He’s really starting to grow on me.

  25. Neelyo says:

So he’s okay with the prom part of school, just not the classes.

  26. Wren33 says:

I like the outfit, but his facial hair always drives me crazy.

  27. Tracy says:

Yeah, I especially love the toothpick hanging out of one side of his mouth. Lovely…. ::::eye roll::::

  28. cs says:

I’m not really sure why everyone’s freaking out about this? I feel like I’ve seen this look in Japanese male fashion trends for years now (admittedly it only tends to be the more fashion-y people who wear it, but it’s not that shocking). It looks pretty normal(-ish) to me. The only thing I’d really take issue with is that the 3/4 length style really makes him look short.

  29. Ali says:

    yes!!!
The TOOTHPICKS! I was waiting for someone else to notice that. Ugghhhh.
I saw Mad Max yesterday and Zoe Kravitz had one in her mouth in the movie…I’m pretty sure I’ve seen her with one before, too. What is THE POINT? Is this another ‘trend’?

  30. Louise177 says:

I’m baffled why websites is making such a big deal about. It doesn’t even look like Jaden is wearing a dress. Most of the time if nobody said anything I wouldn’t be able to tell. With the screaming headlines you would think he was wearing an evening gown with bows, ruffles, and sparkles.

  31. Nonny says:

Not sure why everyone is freaking out about this. Jaden should be allowed the right to express himself through his sartorial choices, these choices reflect how he perceives himself as an individual and only by affording ourselves the right to accept our individualism and express our feelings about it can we achieve self-actualization.
    Alternatively………..the kids an idiot………………

  32. gw says:

    Her face is exquisite.
