Is it ‘difficult’ for Princess Beatrice because Dave Clark hasn’t proposed to her?

Yesterday, People Magazine published one of the strangest royal propaganda pieces in recent memory. Actually, People published three big royal stories yesterday, but the Prince William story and Duchess Kate story were pretty obvious in their intent, both of which were designed to make Will and Kate look “normal” and “middle class” and “just like us.” But in the wake of those stories, People did this one on Princess Beatrice and how she’s going to move to New York soon. That could have been the intent of the story – Bea is coming to NYC, yay! – but they veered off course a few times and I’m trying to figure out why. Here’s the story:

Princess Beatrice has been dating her boyfriend, American-born Dave Clark, for nearly 10 years – and rumors have long swirled that not everyone in the royal family approves. Beatrice, 26 – who was spotted eating out at The Ivy in London on Wednesday – is “very steely under everything – she is a strong character but a little bit more sensitive,” a family friend tells PEOPLE, adding that questions about her romance “must be difficult for her.”

The buzz picked up again after the birth of her royal cousin Princess Charlotte, whose arrival pushed Beatrice’s spot in line to the British throne down to No. 7. According to succession rules, only the first six in line must ask permission from Queen Elizabeth to marry. But Bea’s mother, Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson, 55, has given her endorsement, telling PEOPLE that she loves “Mr. Smiley,” as she refers to him.

“She calls him that because he is constantly smiling,” the source tells PEOPLE. “Dave is absolutely charming.”

The U.S.-born, U.K.-raised Clark is famous among the couple’s inner circle “for his cheeseburgers,” says a friend. “In fact, it’s a joint effort, as Bea helps too.”

Clark, who left Virgin Galactic to work at car service Uber, lives in New York City – where Beatrice is soon expected to join him. She is still on schedule to start a new role at a private equity firm in the city following the short finance course that she took on the West Coast earlier this year, a source close to her confirms to PEOPLE.

It was thought that she would start in Manhattan at some point in the summer, but the timing is yet to be firmed up, the source adds.

The elder daughter of Fergie and Prince Andrew hasn’t worked since leaving her job at Sony Europe last December. In the meantime, she has been enjoying some high-glam downtime on various luxe getaways. Last weekend she attended the glamorous wedding of London friends Joseph Getty and Sabine Ghanem in Rome, where she looked pretty in pale pink. She and her sister Princess Eugenie, 25, live a jet-set life, mixing with international billionaires, vacationing in St. Tropez and partying with their close friend, Virgin CEO Richard Branson, and his family.

“It’s a different lifestyle to most members of the royal family,” says a source who has met the princess several times.

[From People]

My theory is that Beatrice’s press people – who are probably Prince Andrew’s press people and they just try to run light propaganda pieces on Beatrice and Eugenie occasionally – were trying to kick back on a few tabloid stories that have been percolating for a few months now. But if they were trying to do damage control, it’s too little and too late. Beatrice doesn’t seem to have a “glamorous, jet-set life” as much as she seems to have gone on fifteen vacations in seven months’ time, and she hasn’t paid for a single one of those vacations herself.

As for the Dave Clark stuff… questions about their relationship “must be difficult for her”? Why is that? Because they’ve been together 10 years and he hasn’t proposed? Or is that he hasn’t proposed because several high-ranking royals have issues with Dave?

So, what was the real purpose of this story? I’m really struggling to figure it out. What was the goal here?

Well I don’t know what the purpose of this story was–and I think that’s an interesting question. I do think that given the very strange example set by the parents, the York girls may not be in a rush to marry.

    • jugstorecowboy says:

Yeah, marriage wouldn’t look too tempting to me after watching those two.
On an unrelated note, I like her fashion style (as my daughter would say)

  2. Talie says:

Well, it is a little bizarre to be with someone a decade and not have them propose.

    • bettyrose says:

Not if that decade is 16-26. They were just children when they started dating, and 26 is still very young to get married. Besides, a proposal is usually the result of a mutual agreement to get married, and we have no idea what their discussions on that topic have been.

    • Snazzy says:

meh, I guess if you’re into marriage, yes, as the Royals certainly are. But where I live I have have a number of friend that have been with their significant others for over 10 years and there has never been a proposal as neither have felt the need to get married – they are happy the way they are. To each his own

    • Mila says:

why? And if it bugs you to wait why dont you propose?

if we look at all the trends, marriages are becoming less and less. so its not surprising, Beatrice is from a generation in which probably the majority will remain unmarried.

    • Fue McCormick says:

I don’t think anyone should get married before the age of thirty. You won’t have the personality you will probably have for the rest of your life until after age 30 or 32. These two are still growing into their personalities. Let them wait.

      • Pandy says:

Totally agree. Although I have seen some teen romances still successfully together almost 20 years later … but they aren’t 40something yet.

    • Deedee says:

It’s the “Kate effect” in action. Everyone wants to wait a decade now to be just like Kate.

  3. Murphy says:

“she hasn’t paid for a single one of those vacations herself”

Yeah but the British people didn’t pay for them either. So lay off.

    • Kori says:

I think it’s a bit spoiled to be almost 30 and have mommy, daddy, granny or whoever pay for my vacations. But I don’t think it’s that unusual in that world either. And since it’s not the taxpayers as mentioned, I don’t really care too much. I just hope that she is able to settle down to a real job be it a regular 9-to-5 (or whatever passes for that in the upper crust world), being a mother, being a philanthropis, whatever. She is, by all reports, a nice young woman with a good education.

” I just hope that she is able to settle down to a real job be it a regular 9-to-5 (or whatever passes for that in the upper crust world), being a mother, being a philanthropis, whatever.”

        Why should she?

” I just hope that she is able to settle down to a real job be it a regular 9-to-5 (or whatever passes for that in the upper crust world), being a mother, being a philanthropis, whatever.” – if that’s your idea of a good life by all means. Compared to so many other possibilities this one by far is the least attractive to me.

    • Mila says:

that wasnt about it, as far as i can tell. even if its not about tax payer money, it is still pretty weird. maybe i have crappy friends but i dont get 15 vacations sponsored lol.

    • Tia says:

I’m sick of people defending the Yorks!…the British public pays for these girls housing, or perhaps you can explain how an unemployed girl can afford rent on a prime apartment in a PUBLICLY OWNED PALACE?!. their indulgent grandmama gives daddy an allowance to pay for the rest| she gets HER money from the public ( royal estates were turned over to public purse after the Saxe Coberg Gotha royals went bankrupt and Parliment bailed them out!) all other private wealth was gathered as privileged representatives of the public….so I can damn well grouse about this lazy grifter and her parents!

    • bluhare says:

LOL! I most certainly will lay off now. Just because you said so. Not.

  4. Karitas says:

Maybe… encouragement to go ahead already and propose, Dave.
He doesn’t need permission anymore, and she obviously wants to be with him. Is this the York way of telling him to get with the program?

  5. Bluebell says:

This story/article (in People) makes me uncomfortable. I know this is a gossip site but it’s not really any of our business. Speculation on her private life and personal relationships is unfair. She’s not a celebrity.

    • qwerty says:

This is the 1st time I’m seeing an article about her private (romantic) life I think and I’m amazed there are any comments at all. Can’t believe there are people who care whether she marries or not.

    • taxi says:

      She’s not?

  6. Allie says:

He’s know for his cheeseburgers? Thank god.

  7. Kori says:

I’ve often wondered why Dave doesn’t come in for any ‘waitying’ complaints. I understand the situations are different–minor royal vs heir to throne and all. But this guy took umpteen vacations while employed with Virgin and Uber seems to be following the same path. It seems more that his employers like the PR he brings them as the Princess’s boyfriend (because every story I’ve ever read on him mentions where he works) and so they gladly allow him as much time to go on vacation, accompany her to weddings, etc…as needed.

    • anne_000 says:

Because Dave hasn’t put his life on stand-by just to be on beck and call for Beatrice.

He has his own life. He has his jobs. He has his own circle of friends and his own interests and hobbies, I’m thinking. He has a more rounded life than Kate ever did. His existence isn’t dependent on Beatrice’s whims, like Kate was with William.

And if Dave and Beatrice ever break up, one wouldn’t be able to say he wasted his life away waiting for Beatrice to marry him, which, on the other hand, could be said for Kate if William hadn’t married her.

      • bluhare says:

He may not have put it on stand by but he certainly seems to get an inordinate amount of time off to accompany her everywhere.

But I guess he’s providing free advertising for his employer. I know I’d like to go work there now that I know how great the vacation privileges are!

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Maybe she doesn’t want to get married yet, or at all.

  9. Zombie Shortcake says:

But is he named after the Dave Clark 5?

  10. seesittellsit says:

This is arguably the most “difficult” aspect of this woman’s life – perhaps that’s the point of the story.

  11. Liberty says:

Well, Charles is boring in terms of gossip juice, Then, Wm and Kate have disappeared into Carole’s kitchen with the babies for the duration. So the tabs have to have new fodder — young royals w love troubles, of course!

Re Bea — maybe, just maybe, hmm, Carole is pushing this story to take the glare off her Kate. Kate was never fond of Bea and Eugenie, isn’t that the past story, so….hey stop loping at Kate — look over there! I want to start a PR spin firm called Look Over THERE! haha

Bea’s still unengaged! And, poor Bridget Jone-like Harry! that sort of thing, so Kate and Wm can shop, travel, live separate lives and play in peace?

    • tigerlily says:

Love your idea for a PR spin firm. You’d definitely have a lot of clients.

  12. Delores Smile says:

Why wasn’t Kate and Carol fond of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Is King Charles going to be the last Monarch? I think so because I don’t have a clue how things came to be so bad that England has been flash-bulbed so badly the English have a blind spot to be unable to see the theft as close as their hand in frount of them.

  13. SleepingBeauty says:

The only reason for the Princess to get married is if she wants to have children. There have been rumors that the Royal family doesn’t like Dave. Also, the Princess’ mother, Fergie, wasn’t invited to Prince William’s wedding. I’m guessing family drama is preventing this marriage.

    • RobN says:

I’ve never understood why anybody ever thought Fergie ought to be invited. I certainly didn’t invite my uncle’s ex-wife to my wedding and she wasn’t even an influence peddler who embarrassed the whole family like Fergie did.

  14. TessD says:

The point of this piece is probably to have women relate to Beatrice’s “struggles” and possible switch the focus from her luxury life style and make her sound more like the rest of them.

  15. enike says:

I would like to see LAK´s take on this

after 10 years, both of them can propose, if they want to IMHO (as somebody pointed it out above, after 10 years its a mutual agreement)

I dont mind her vacations, good for her
