Brian Williams will likely get fired from ‘NBC Nightly News’ this week

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten an update on the Brian Williams situation. Four months ago, Williams was caught in a series of on-camera lies. As it turned out, he was something of a serial fantasist, claiming to be the star of all kinds of heroic stunts and journalistic coups, none of which were really true. Williams was suspended from the NBC Nightly News for six months – his suspension will be over in August, but NBC is likely going to announce their final decision this week, following an exhaustive in-house investigation into Williams’ lies.

A decision about Brian Williams’ fate at NBC could come as early as this week — and it looks like the embattled anchor won’t be returning to “NBC Nightly News.” Sources tell Page Six that Williams will likely lose his anchor chair following the lengthy internal investigation into his alleged tall tales. But NBC brass — led by NBCUniversal CEO and president Steve Burke and NBC News chairman Andy Lack — have been looking for a way to keep him at the network in a different, yet-to-be-agreed-upon role. One source told us, “Brian’s six-month suspension is over in early August, and NBC chiefs are under pressure to come up with a solution. The talks are complicated and are ongoing, and there has not yet been a deal. But it is likely he won’t be back in the ‘Nightly’ anchor chair. A decision could be made as early as this week, if all sides can reach an agreement.”

Industry insiders said NBC News staff, led by Lack, have been encouraged to think of alternative roles for Williams. But we are told the veteran anchor and his hard-charging attorney Robert Barnett have yet to agree and sign off on an alternative role. One insider said, “Many options are still on the table and are still being discussed, including ways to keep Brian at the network, or even for him to leave the network completely.”

The Post previously reported that Williams “would not go without a fight” and would have to be paid a large portion of his contract, which is worth about $10 million a year for five years. NBC declined to comment.

[From Page Six]

I think still honoring Williams’ contract in any way, shape or form would be a GD joke. Williams could and should be fired for cause and there’s no way NBC should pay him $10 million a year following this disaster. And what kind of “alternative role”? There is no way Williams could anchor his own news magazine show at this point.

Meanwhile, it’s looking more and more like the substitute anchor of the Nightly News, Lester Holt, will become the permanent anchor. It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy – CNN ran a story about how Holt is doing really well in the anchor chair and his NBC colleagues love him and respect him. Holt is everything Brian Williams and Matt Lauer are not: a real newsman who treats his coworkers really well.

  1. David says:

Good, remove him and replace with Ann Curry.

  2. Kiddo says:

Williams should be placed on the News desk at SNL, where farcical news reporting, hyperbole and general exaggerations are to be commended and laughed at.

    • PunkyMomma says:

Makes complete sense to me – after all isn’t SNL Brian Williams’ brainchild?

      • Abbott says:

He writes all the jokes and plays all the parts, Eddie Murphy-Klump style. Brian Williams is the original Orphan Black.

    • runCMC says:

Wait, this is actually a really good idea! But is he capable of laughing at himself?

      • Kiddo says:

Who cares? It eats up the rest of his contract and Williams wanted to take over Letterman’s position, so it’s win/win.

      • Actually, yes. He’s been a guest host of SNL and did a send-up of himself on Sesame Street. I found him kind of pompous until I started seeing him poke fun at himself. It’s really a shame he’s said these things.

    • Hawkeye says:

      Or FOX!

      • Pace U. says:

Or..Fashion Police duty w Guilian Rancic but even that’s too good for him!
        Lol

  3. Amy Tennant says:

I guess he could be the highest-paid janitor in history.

  4. Nev says:

Lester is happening. Ann Curry is so happening. Williams had no need to be soooooo extra!!!!!

  5. Birdix says:

Why hasn’t he resigned? Why is he so shameless that he feels he has a right to negotiate for his job or for millions? Even if he does get fired, he’ll write a book and get paid handsomely for that. All that said, I’m glad to see Lester Holt get the spot, although I wish he could have the satisfaction of being selected for it rather than jumping in after Williams was booted.

    • BlueNailsBetty says:

Brian is a pathological liar. People like that will never admit they did anything wrong. They see any challenge to their lies as “the enemy” and they will immediately go to war with anyone who dares to call them out.

My brother is just like Brian and whenever someone challenges him (even in a nice/friendly way), in my brother’s mind that person becomes his nemesis and my brother will wage a slander campaign against them for the rest of his life.

People like Brian and my brother will never admit wrongdoing and on the rare occasions they do apologize they use qualifying words to do so (ex. “I’m sorry you feel that way”) and their future actions never match the apology. They don’t change their behavior because they would have to admit they had behaved badly.

I’m surprised NBC didn’t have some sort of morality clause in Brian’s contract. Or maybe NBC knew of the lies and didn’t take action and now Brian is threatening to blow the lid off the back alley behavior of NBC (I believe it’s the latter).

Regardless of what happens to Brian’s career I’m firmly on Team Lester. If he doesn’t stay as the news anchor, I’ll switch to a different channel for my national news.

      • Vava says:

My god, this resonates with me. One of my friends acts just like your brother. Can’t apologize for being an ass to save her soul. She ALWAYS puts it back on me. “I’m sorry you feel that way” as opposed to saying, “I’m sorry I hurt you and I am a complete jerk”. People like that do have issues, that’s for sure. I’m ready to run the opposite direction.

    • Lesley says:

Tom Brady was slotted in after Drew Bledsoe got hurt. Believe me, if you excel, everyone forgets your predesesor.

  6. PunkyMomma says:

I love Lester Holt – he’s the real deal.

    • DianaM. says:

He is! I love him, and his voice, since he was anchor on Chicago local station!

    • Liberty says:

Yes! He was my favorite when I lived in Chicago. He’s the real deal. Love him.

    • kir says:

and Lester is a person of color.

      • FLORC says:

He’s honest and good at his job. His color should not matter. That it’s still thought about says all the wrong things.

      • Robin says:

Exactly, FLORC. Skin color is irrelevant to whether someone is qualified for or good at their job. Lester Holt does an excellent job. It’s racist to bring up his color when discussing how good he is at his work.

      • What if kir just didn’t finish the thought? Perhaps this could be read “and Lester is a person of color, which means that the network is finally rewarding talent and achievement rather than continuing to think that only white men and women are credible anchors.”

I don’t know if that’s what kir was thinking, but I do think it’s judgmental and unhelpful to cry “racism” when we don’t know what that phrase actually means to the writer. That doesn’t foster discussion or education.

      • Judd says:

        …..and???? That matters why?

      • taxi says:

@ kir – so what? If we’re all color blind & judge on skill & merit, why mention whether anyone is POC ? You’ve just introduced race into the discussion. I don’t appreciate it.

  7. Blythe says:

    David. Muir. Knows. Better.

  8. wendi says:

    it’s about time

  9. JudyK says:

Good. Lester Holt should get the permanent spot.

  10. wendi says:

Absolutely agree with Kaiser that this guy should not receive any financial compensation from NBC. They are not letting him go due to cutbacks – he lied on multiple occasions in a profession that’s all about finding and reporting on the truth. So, no golden handshake for the “good man” (reference from his daughter)

  11. Anastasia says:

I also love Lester Holt. We watch him every weeknight. He’s better than Brian Williams in my opinion.

  12. Snazzy says:

Do you think they would actually have to pay him out? That would be completely insane ….

    • belle de jour says:

Charlie Sheen once said in an interview that the reason you pay hookers is not for the sex; what you’re paying them for is to go away afterwards.

NBC’s problem is that they very publicly paraded around mistress Brian – showing him off all over town, even lending him & his image out to other shows, sharing him with other formats. Now, they’re having to involve lawyers and a massive palimony payout – no matter if he keeps putting out for the network or not. I don’t think they want what he’s got any more anyway.

I have no doubt they just wish he’d take the money they leave on the nightstand, go away, and quit embarrassing them. Mr. Holt seems more like the stable, stay-at-home marryin’ type. I bet NBC is more than ready to settle up and then settle down.

  13. Incognito says:

I love Lester Holt. I’m from the Chicago area and loved him when he was a local anchor. I don’t know him personally or anything, but he always came off as a really nice guy, very genuine and you never heard a bad thing about him. And I love his voice. It’s really great. I would totally support him as the permanent replacement for Williams. I also think Williams should leave the network. He needs to find something other than serious news reporting since people just aren’t going to be able to trust him again after the lies were exposed. And while he’s not writing the stories, it is important that viewers trust the anchors.

  14. Cricket says:

Yeah for Lester Holt! I really like him and he’s believable and has ethics and what a voice!

I can’t believe there isn’t some ethics clause in Williams contract they can use to terminate with cause? They could always put him on Morning Joe or something on MSNBC, does anyone even watch that channel anymore?

  15. meme says:

It’s about time. If he had any sense, he would have resigned.

  16. lila fowler says:

BW is shameless and disgusting. Anyone else would have resigned by now. He simply can’t bear the thought of giving up fame and fortune… and fame… and fame. He needs to go somewhere far away and stop telling lies. He can take his daughter with him.

  17. Littlebowbee says:

    I love Lester!! 😍

  18. Tracy says:

Team Lester, all the way. Brian, have some self respect and accept the repercussions of your lies, fibs and embellishments. Time to go.

  19. Shambles says:

    His face… Is shaped… Like a kumquat?

    Yay for Lester Holt!

  20. Teri says:

I’m curious to know if ABC will punish George Stephanopolous for not disclosing the huge donations he made to the Clinton Global Initiative and why he was allowed to interview the author of Clinton Cash

    • delphi says:

He’s not likely to get into any sort of hot water, because after all he used to work in the Clinton administration in the early years. He was the “golden boy” of the Democratic Party, and even James Carville pegged him as heir apparent to the Democratic strategy pool.

Oh, George…*le sigh* I had pictures of him on my wall as a teenager, next to Chris Chelios and Noah Wylie.

      Don’t judge.

    • Judd says:

George should have been fired immediately, as should have Williams. Journalism and lying, do not mix well.

    • feebee says:

Two different things. George Stephanopolous didn’t technically lie about anything, just didn’t disclose donations to a worldwide charitable organization. His donation is publicly available as far as I’m aware.

GS has never been considered an impartial journalist. I seriously doubt the word Journalist would appear in his resume.

  21. Giddy says:

Surely BW has made enough money to support his family. I think his only option, his only honorable option, is to go away quietly. Hopefully he will finally realize that only he was the architect of his own undoing. If he can ever sincerely embrace that truth and work to understand why he had such a need for fantasy, then he can work to put his life and career back together. Then I can see him writing a best-seller about how he had to face what he had done to his career and family, and how he has worked to change.

But I am afraid that I am indulging in a fantasy. I don’t think he’ll ever admit that he is a fantasist, a myth teller, a pathological liar. That’s a shame because he literally was a man who had everything. Why wasn’t it enough?

  22. tabasco says:

How he has a chance in hell of getting any continued payout from his contract is beyond me (a lawyer). Is there not an honesty-when-reporting-the-news clause in a GD *news reporter’s* contract? Would you even need one, given that it’s the basis of the employment?

Stephanie March needs to get Brian’s lawyer’s number.

  23. db says:

Brian caused his own downfall and has lost any credibility as a journalist or even newsmodel. See ya.

  24. feebee says:

The daughter is beginning to make more sense now.
