Princess Madeleine gave birth to a baby boy in Sweden today

Well, that happened quickly! I know Sweden’s Princess Madeleine was due soon after her brother married, but I thought it would be a week or two. But no, Madeleine gave birth today in Sweden. She welcomed a son, name unknown, who joined big sister Princess Leonore. Madeleine was practically having contractions at her brother’s wedding! Poor thing. I saw some video of Madeleine looking very warm during the church service, and trying to fan herself. It seems like Madeleine’s husband, Christopher O’Neill, and Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel were all trying to help out with Leonore at the wedding too. Anyway, mother and child are fine!

Sweden has a new prince after Princess Madeleine gave birth to her second child with financier Chris O’Neill. The couple, who married in a lavish ceremony on June 8, 2013, now have two children under two. Their little girl Princess Leonore is 16 months old.

“The Marshal of the Realm is delighted to announce that HRH Princess Madeleine gave birth to a son on June 15 at 1.45pm,” read a statement via the royal family Facebook page. “Both mother and child are in good health.”

The new baby will brought up in London as the O’Neills are due to move to Chris’ native Britain by the end of the year. Madeleine and Chris will have been in Stockholm less than a year after moving from New York where they met. London is perfect for the family because the princess lived there before and loved the anonimity afforded her by the city. Chris, 40, also has a large circle of friends and extensive business interests in Britain. The son of an American and his Austrian wife, he grew up in London, supporting Chelsea Football Club. At the same time, the UK is close enough for them to make frequent visits back to Stockholm. This is important to the 32-year-old royal mother who has talked about the bond between Leonore and her cousin Princess Estelle, the daughter of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.

“(Estelle) is very fond of Leonore, which is very cute. She wants to change diapers, she wants to bathe her, she wants to feed her,” Madeleine told a local Swedish TV station. “It’s very nice for me, I hardly need to do anything.”

[From Hello]

I do think Madeleine and Victoria are very close, as sisters, and even more so now that their brother has married Sofia Hellqvist. It’s worth noting (because I love this crap): Madeleine was pregnant when she married Christopher. She gave birth eight months after her wedding, and then she got pregnant for the second time about six months later. Oh, well! I’m sure she’s very happy (ish) and I can’t wait to hear the name.

Holy cow, that was cutting it close.

    • *North*Star* says:

      Wasn’t it????

    • puffinlunde says:

They knew it was possible – the Swedish press wrote that there were contingency plans should she go into labour during the wedding

      • *North*Star* says:

Oh I’m certain they would have — they made sure she didn’t do the boat trip and a few other things.

  2. Maya says:

Um the baby could have been born early – that does happen as well. It doesn’t mean that she was pregnant when she got married.

Having said that – congrats to the family.

    • CG says:

And even if she *was* pregnant when they married, they had been engaged for months. It’s not like it was a shotgun wedding that they threw together in three or four weeks.

      • Scarlet Vixen says:

This ^^^ I was 2mos pregnant when I got married, and I absolutely didn’t have a “shotgun” wedding. We had been engaged for a year, and had a wedding date set for months. We knew we wanted to start having kids right away so I went off my birth control 2mos before we got married, thinking it would take me awhile to get pregnant (I have endometriosis). I got pregnant 4 days after I took my last pill.

      • CG says:

OMG Scarlet Vixen, are you my cousin? The exact same thing happened to her!

    • m says:

Leonore was born a week or two early, 39 weeks after her parents wedding. She was a wedding night/honeymoon baby. Madeleine said that the pregnancy happened very fast and suddenly.

  3. GlimmerBunny says:

Congrats! I think it’s cute that her kids are the exact opposite of Kate’s. In olden times they probably would have married each other 😀

  4. The Original Mia says:

Does it really matter if she was a few weeks/1 month pregnant when she got married?

Can’t believe she went through all the wedding stuff when she had to have been having contractions the entire weekend. You go, Madde! I wonder if they’ll bestow a HRH on him or let him just be baby boy Bernadotte O’Neill.

    • MP says:

It matters a little since she was pictured smoking and drinking at her wedding party.

      • Goats on the Roof says:

        @MP
Yes, she was photographed drinking and smoking at her wedding reception. If you look at the timeline, it is very, very possible that she didn’t know she was pregnant at that point. I doubt she’d risk fetal defects for a good time, especially given her position.

      • Petrichor says:

@ MP That probably just proves my point (below) that she didn’t yet know she was pregnant.

      • MP says:

I guess it was an accident then, since everybody should understand to stop with alcohol the same time they stop with birth control. Not after the test is positive.

  5. QQ says:

    OOFF!! that escalated Quickly LOL

  6. Goats on the Roof says:

    “It’s worth noting..”

No, it really isn’t. Madeleine and Chris had dated for years, and the wedding was hardly of the shotgun variety.

    • Petrichor says:

No kidding. If she was 4-5 weeks pregnant at the time of the wedding, she probably wasn’t even aware of it yet.

That said, I’m not up on my Swedish royal gossip. Do all the European royals hate Sofia for some reason? Is she deemed too “common”? I don’t know anything about her.

      • M.A.F. says:

All I know and have seen is that she was a “glamor “model and did a bit of reality tv.

  7. Dena says:

The difference is when they like you . . .

Sophia & CP were crucified for eclectic music choices @ their wedding, she for having a non-offensive tattoo showing as well as crooked teeth (Lord have mercy), and he for having a scraggly beard. Those things were treated like treason against the state. Yet, the wall of protection comes up for Madeline who perhaps had to have a shot-gun wedding.

They got to like you. If not, they will come for you with pitchforks @ the ready.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

Sigh…Madeleine gave birth 8 months after her wedding, a wedding that had been in planning for months itself. No matter how you slice it, it wasn’t a shotgun wedding.

    • notasugarhere says:

Maddie and Chris have been the main punching bags for the Swedish royal press since before they married. Sofia has been deemed the golden girl / press money maker and most Swedish press sites refuse to accept negative comments about her online. They openly encourage bashing of Maddie and Chris. Sofia is NOT a victim, she’s proud of every choice she’s made.

      • Dena says:

No. Notasugar. I dont think Sophia is a victim. Not at all. My point is that when we “like” someone, we tend to see their choices & mistakes from a more humanizing & forgiving perspective. We will provide a narrative or rationale that is in general supportive of that person. However, when the opposite occurs, our attitudes are much more rigid and uncompromising. We begin to chip away, chip away even at the smallest things. Some of us can recognize that in ourselves or in situations where as others cannot. Sometimes I’m guilty of it & sometimes I’m not. I’ve also been on the liked side as well as the disliked side.

My goal here today was to point out how “forgiving” or supportive a narrative can be when the person is thought of favorably.

      • notasugarhere says:

The majority of the narrative in the Swedish press is anti Madeleine and pro-Sofia. There are many people who do not like Madeleine and who share those thoughts freely. They may not be as vocal here, but they are vocal elsewhere.

There are many reasons to be horrified by Sofia entering the royal family and being paid by the taxpayers to represent Sweden. And on this site, there seems to be an enormous wall of protection for Sofia.

      • pato says:

        Why they don´t like Madeleine?

  8. MelissaManifesto says:

What it is with royal babies and their perfect timing lately? That was one well-behaved baby!

I am happy that everything went well. I am always overjoyed when babies are born. Congrats to Princess Madeleine and the family!

  9. Chinoiserie says:

There is no reason for continue to think that Victoria and Madeleine hate Sofie (even if they did at some point which could be just cossip). Victoria cried during the wedding and everyone looked happy.

Anyway happy for Madeleine! I knew it would be a boy! She looked very beautiful during the wedding considering how far along she was.

  10. Karen says:

At 1 month along she might have not even known, or just found out on around the wedding day that she was pregnant.

I’m sure they just wanted to start a family right away and got off the meds assuming it would take a few tries.

  11. aaa says:

The three Bernadotte siblings have always been close. If Victoria and Madeleine have gotten even closer it probably has more to do with them both being wives and mothers whose daughters are close in age rather than them bonding over their brother Carl Philip marrying Sofia Hellqvist which only happened a couple days ago.

  12. JRenee says:

    The Princess is beautiful!

  13. taxi says:

Most loving sisters would welcome a bride who brought such joy to their brother.

  14. msthang says:

Or they truly cannot stand her and they put on a lovely act for the media!

  15. ArtHistorian says:

How cute are Madeleine’s comments about Estelle and Leonore!
