Rita Ora: ‘I’m afraid of being alone. Love is like crack, like comfort eating’

Rita Ora

Rita Ora covers the July issue of Marie Claire to promote her role in Southpaw. This is the boxing movie where Jake Gyllenhaal buffed up his bod and started his Oscar campaign early by talking about the power of the moon on the cover of Esquire. Harvey Weinstein’s producing, so no wonder both Jake and Rita received prominent magazine features this month. Harvey previously described Rita’s performance as “breathtaking.” We’ll see how this plays out. Rita recently played Christian Grey’s sister for about 30 seconds, so no one really knows whether she can act. Maybe she’s better at acting than being a pop star. Here are some excerpts:

She used to DJ as a teen and pretend to be at sleepovers: “I would rip my T-shirts and be really punk and not clean. And I would have blonde hair, really dark eyebrows, red lipstick, lots of fake rings that made my fingers go green. I wouldn’t be smelling that great … But me and my friends, we were really, like, rebel-y. I feel like I lived a lot when I shouldn’t have.”

On love: “I’m afraid of being alone … I’m not afraid to admit that, you know. I’m not embarrassed to admit that. I just hope it’s not a never-ending cycle. Sometimes love just makes you feel crazy. And that feeling that we have as girls, just to have that feeling, even for five seconds, it’s like crack. I mean, dont compare it to that, but you know what I mean. It’s like comfort eating.”

On the Calvin Harris split: “There was a reason why I split up with him. And there was a reason why I’m at this point in my life where I feel like I have so much musical freedom, and I don’t have to explain myself to anybody… It was more of a thing where I was in awe. I was at that point in my relationship where I felt he could do no wrong. I thought he had my back and that he’d never steer me wrong. But then ‘I Will Never Let You Down’ came out, and everything started to go a bit weird. I don’t know if it was because business was mixed with personal or what.”

[From Marie Claire]

Of course Rita talked about Calvin during this interview (again). And why not? American audiences don’t know Rita very well, but we did hear about that messy breakup. Rita says, “there was a reason” for the breakup, but she’s only echoing Calvin’s own words with less profanity.

I do believe Rita when she says she’s hooked on love and afraid to be alone. Why else would anyone date Ricky Hilfiger? Rita freely admits to not being able to stay single for a moment. At least she’s being honest.

If you are not fit company for yourself not fit company for anyone else it’s ok to be on your own but I know many who have that same issue but sometimes you still end up being alone. Someone is really trying to make her happen.

  2. tacos and tv says:

For some reason I find her off putting. I can’t put my finger on it but I ain’t buying what she’s selling.

    • kiran says:

      I know! What is it?

      • Tacos and TV says:

I’m still trying to figure it out!!! I just can’t with her and the every time I think “oh she’s gone… it was all a weird dream.” she’s back!!! I have not more can’ts to give. It’s almost like she’s trying every avenue she can to be “in” I guess and it is just not working… at least for me.

  3. Blythe says:

Luckily, my love for boxed brownie mix can replace heartache. Do you, Rita.

  4. Loopy says:

Here we have J.Lo jr, I will never understand the idea of jumping from one relationship into the other,I would just owe it to my body and mind to get some REST. Especially if you have been doing this for decades,to each her own.

  5. NewWester says:

If Harvey Weinstein is lurking around the public will certainly be hearing and seeing more of Rita Ora.

    • Loopy says:

      Is that his muse?

      • NewWester says:

Not sure about that, but with Harvey W somehow involved in a project he tends to go all out with promoting a film. In particular if a movie gets great reviews from critics or up for a Oscar

  6. boredblond says:

Since I’m one of those who knows nothing about her except what I’ve seen on gossip sites, I was under the impression she was never alone..uh, isn’t she famous for ‘not being alone’?

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

That’s pretty much all she’s famous for, she picks jerks and then she cheats on them with other jerks apparently.

    • Elisa the I. says:

She is quite well known here in Europe. Do you have Radio Energy in the States? That’s one of the stations playing her music.
I don’t mind her too much, I find it interesting that she is Albanian.

  7. Boots says:

She and Calvin used to frequent the restaurant I worked at in college. She is very sweet. Calvin is…not, to put it mildly. Hopefully she can find someone better.

    • Mila says:

come on, spill the beans, details!

      • Boots says:

It’s not too exciting. She just has a very nice, respectful demeanor and Calvin is more the “you’re not a person, just a means to getting the food I want” kind of customer. Also he once tried playing the “I’m famous so I deserve better service card” by saying he had a concert to perform in a few hours (he name dropped all these other DJs who were going to perform at the same show) and needed his stuff immediately, not after a wait like everyone else. It kind of backfired because none of us really knew who he was at the time…

        cringe worthy.

  8. Naddie says:

She sounds as stupid and vapid as she seems. And no, she’s not happening, despite the effort. I was shocked to see her singing at the Oscar, and I thought two things: good voice, unremarkable performer.

  9. Trillian says:

Randomly dating people isn’t “love”. Just saying.

  10. JENNA says:

I hear her role in Southpaw is as big as her role in FSOG.

    • Kitten says:

      But it’s a “breathtaking” 30 seconds.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

That’s hilarious. My friend literally missed her role in Gray because she ran out of the theater to take a quick phone call and came back surprised she’d already missed it.

  11. Heartsease says:

This’ll show my age but does anyone else remember that Kid Creole and the Coconuts song called ‘Stool Pigeon’? Hang on…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3xU0fnjUcg

Well, when ever I see the Whora, I always sing ‘Starf*cker! Hachacha chaaaaaaaaaa’ to the tune of that. JUst me then? 😛

  12. Tifygodess says:

So is the dislike for her because of her “relationships”? I honestly don’t know all that much about her other than the Calvin and Rob thing. Which I’m not going to hold someone’s love life against them even if it’s sloppy. That just st*pid. I listened to some of her music this weekend and it’s not horrible by any means, first time I ever heard any of it, although I did recognize one song from the radio. Had no idea it was even her. Honestly It’s no different than any other pop singer out there. Most of it isn’t even available in the US.

    • Naddie says:

The problem is that she doesn’t deliver what they (whoever are trying to make her happen) promise. She’s just a generic pop singer with a good voice and songs about parties and hooking up with some guy.

  13. Mila says:

why would you say this publicly? i dont think it will make a future partner of her secure in the relationship. “its not you, it just that i need somebody, anybody.”

  14. moira says:

I met rita in Dublin, i dropped something and she picked it up and came after me to return it, she was so lovely and friendly, no airs or graces, really down to earth. I was a bit star struck so she was making jokes to put me at ease. Nobody else was around to witness it, she was just a lovely girl.

    • Eve says:

Aww that’s nice of her, I don’t know why people hate her so much when they freely admit that they don’t know much about her. My parents know her parents and she comes from a good family.

  15. JENNA says:

@Tyfigodess Her team is too obvious tho and her career still hasn’t taken off. Can you name one of her songs?

  16. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

I’m glad to hear from the people who say she’s nice in person, that is nice and I am happy when someone is still normal with people on a personal basis.

Sadly I also agree with those who say she’s off-putting for some reason except I have several ideas as to why. She comes off as desperate, desperate to belong, desperate to be famous. She’ll gush and get big publicity over roles that either end up being 30 seconds or get cut. For a while she was SWF Rihanna on Twitter and while she can sing she seems to have trouble getting material to sing about without dating her producers/writers. She has a reputation more than any other famous women because all her exes keep spilling the tea publicly. Being associated with Weinstein now certainly doesn’t help that rumor. Also…her clothes and outfits are like…REALLY ugly. Not even Gaga-esque ugly but “I woke up today and thought yellow stripes with leather would look good”

Tbh, I give her credit for not giving up, being able to come out and keep showing up even with her public reputation being what it is.

  17. kri says:

She needs Krispy Kreme in her life.

  18. Jess says:

I like her. She actually has a great voice and personality. I don’t know why some people don’t like her or why she gets on their nerves. I noticed she’s kind of immature, maybe she brings that out of people?
