Zayn Malik made himself a hot topic of discussion here for a few weeks, much to my surprise, when he suddenly quit One Direction. The official story from Camp Zayn is that he wanted to be “normal,” but he immediately turned into Zudas by popping into the studio with producer Naughty Boy. Then we heard elaborate escape details, which revealed how Zayn plotted his way out for a long time. I’m surprised the guy didn’t use burner phones to leave what he considered to be a wretched boy-band experience.
Some more tea spilled when Zayn sparred with Louis Tomlinson on Twitter, and Louis went hard with no mercy. Zayn and Louis are no longer directly fighting because, well, Louis has another mess on his mind right now.
Fast forward to a week ago. Zayn started slamming Naughty Boy on Twitter:

This honeymoon phase won’t last too long. RCA must be paying him a bundle, but how long will Zayn last before he hates this arrangement too? He quit during a world tour. He’s not exactly dependable or mature. Good luck, Zayn Malik.

I’m not surprised this was in the works for a while. Simon was the one that arranged for his deal with RCA. So he didn’t burn all his bridges and I don’t think they are as blindsided as they want us to believe.
Fact is 1D started as five solo acts that Simon merged as a group…I’m surprised they lasted this long without someone wanting to go their original route with their career
Almost every ‘boy/girl’ band has ended this way – was always going to happen. I think most people thought Harry would have been the first one to jump.
Very true its just especially real for these guys because they WANTED to make it as solo acts. But apparently he writes a lot of the stuff for the band and carries the singing with Harry. I thought Harry would jump ship first as well
Zayn never wrote for the band, by his own admission he was never interested in it until their fourth album and then he got pissy when the one song he co-wrote and submitted didn’t get chosen. Liam and Harry carry the band vocally.
Zayn got to showcase his beautiful falsettos a lot but he never carried the band vocally. Liam is covering all of Zayn’s falsettos with no problem and Liam/Harry/Niall are handling all of Zayn’s vocals without issue as well.
Harry never would quit first because Harry doesn’t want to be seen as the bad guy who broke up 1D. For being the youngest guy in the band, he’s the one who seems to take this the most seriously and approaches it the most like a career.
Harry also seems the most level headed, he mostly stays off social media, the only posts seem to be the general thank you after concerts, most likely the bare minimum he is required to do. I really like his instagram account. Never in a million years did I think I would ever type that sentence.
Just so you know: On their first album ALL the guys collaborated on 4 of the songs
On second album Harry, Niall and Zayn collaborated on 2 while Liam and Louis collaborated on 4
On album three Zayn worked on 2, Niall 3, Harry 5, Liam 9 and Louis 12.
On album 4 Niall 3, Zayn4, Harry 5, Louis 9 and Liam 10
I don’t know why they don’t get more credit for their efforts as their songs are really good!

I’m not sure if he’s going to find success as a solo act, he may have pissed many fans with his behaviour.
he also doesn’t have the work ethic and stage presence to make it as a successful solo act. He’s just sort of there onstage and he’s always been content to let the other people in the band do the heavy lifting.
Robbie Williams, George Michael, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce –no one can say they don’t have an incredible work ethic. They also have that something factor that allows them to just shine onstage and feed off of the energy of the crowd.
Thanks to my daughter I know way more about one direction than any 43 should. Going to see them in 6 weeks.
The other issue besides no stage presence is that his interviews are terrible. They are almost painful to watch him. He does not engage, every answer looks like it is being pulled out of him, he always has that bored, aloof, would rather be anywhere than here look on his face.
I’ve only started looking at them closely for the past couple of months, and I always noticed he was more aloof, and not interested at all. Perhaps now that he can be his ‘real’ self he’ll look more invested and happier.
The poor boy does not remember that only George Michael and Robbie Williams managed to have decent career after quitting the band which made them famous…
And both of them proved they have great talent with the band(s) and beyond. It was well known that Robbie and Gary wrote a lot of Take Thats big hits and the same for George Michael and Wham. Other than the headband what’s he done for 1D – they dont write their own songs, never have.
Geri Halliwell quit the Spice Girls, had some hit songs and after disappeared.
Robbie is a great showman I’ve seen him on stage !

On the new albums (especially the most recent album, Four) they wrote extensively. Not just like one or two lines and were given a writing credit. Check your facts.

Zayn even admitted in an interview that he never was interested in writing until their fourth album. The other guys had been getting into writing and shaping their sound since album #2.
He got pissy when the one song he submitted for album #4 didn’t get chosen. Liam/Louis/Harry all write songs (together and separately) and a lot of their songs don’t get chosen. They write the most but even all of their submitted songs don’t get picked. It’s not personal. Not all songs are right for the tone of the album or their vocals or whatever. Zayn seemed to take it personally.
Just posted elsewhere what numbers they have ALL written on all four albums…they have done a HUGE amount of writing on their songs and get no publicity for it at all! They have activiely been writing their songs, in partnership with others since the first album.
It seems to me George Michael was an artist made into a heartthrob, not the other way around.
Also, neither were annoying, they were charming and appealing to various audiences.
The hashtag “realmusic” is a total dick move! He is the only one from the group that didn’t write songs (on the recent albums), or none of hem were good enough to be put on the album. He had the best voice but that was it. He doesn’t have the personality or charisma to make it solo. Harry on the other hand… I think he could make it.
From what I know, he tried getting his ideas in but kept getting shut down by the others for being too “hip-hop”.
He only ever submitted one song for consideration though and it was more like something appropriate for the Weekend apparently than one direction. The others write and for every 4 or 5 songs submitted maybe 1 song will get chosen. That’s just how writing goes.
He should never forget how he started.Showing this kind of behaviour will lead him nowhere.So sad.

WHO raised this boy? And why aren’t people scared of working with him? This is a bold move, to leave one of the biggest boy bands ever in the middle of a tour, be a complete douche about it, and try to launch a solo career while the little girls are still crying through their retainers. Way to show gratitude and reassure everyone that you’re a good investment.
I’m completely fascinated by this situation. Combined with the Louis apocalypse, this is quite unprecedented in boy band history and I’m old enough to have witnessed the Take That times.
I’ve been thinking the same. This is not some boy-band issue, the guy is an arrogant jerk. The way he attacked his old band-mate made him look like one of those people who will only act nice until they get what they want.
He dumps people in a horrible way when they’re no longer of use to him, who the hell would want to work with somebody like that?!

Remember this – those boys left home at 16 – 17 years old for an audition and they never came back. They hit the road and stayed on the road. We don’t know why Zayn left or why he felt such tremendous stress that fans could see him falling apart right in front of our faces. Zayn used to be happy-go-lucky – he was full of energy and joy. But as someone said up-thread – something happened in 2014 and his entire demeanor changed.
BTW – He has not attacked his former band mates so why is everyone attacking him.

You let your teenager be put into this boy band machine, you need to take responsibility for how they might turn out. And it’s not like he was a prisoner, as we now see. He left. Good for him. But maybe you don’t do it in such a douche-y fashion? Be honest, don’t lie to the fans, don’t start Twitter fights, don’t be a d*ck about the whole thing, don’t be smug, and don’t gloat. I can’t wait for the band to take a “break” so they can all start releasing solo music. Harry’s already got the name recognition so we all know he can kill it. Spare a thought for poor old Louis who not only is the weakest singer but now has serious baby issues.
I think Louis knows he has no shot at a solo career. That’s why he’s done this imprint record label with Sony Records/Simon Cowell and has gotten into writing and producing.
I think that’s part of the reason he was the most vocal on his disdain for Zayn leaving. He knows he won’t make it without the band. If Harry jumps this is over
No, Naughty Boy threw shade at !D, Louis made fun of his tweet and the battle was on…Louis ONLY fights those who attack his group. Also Louis has co-written 29 of the songs on their four albums as well as started up a label of his own, I think he and Liam are partners in that.
I think Louis will do fine in this world and I hope they stay together as they really do make beautiful music together.

I always liked Zayn the most when he was in 1 D, but I don’t get what his long game is here? He’s -to me-just a really lucky/flaky person.. exceptionally good looking without trying, was the best singer in 1D without trying, one of the most popular in 1D even though he was (is) always moody/shy.. seems like the type of person who leans towards ‘artistic freedom’ and feeling comfortable (as in, being around people he knows, familiar with).. so why sign with another label? The inevitable will happen..ugh, lol.

I get the inclination for wanting to go solo. I’m sure they all want to do their own things at this point. It’s just the way he went about it was shady shady.
He walked out of a multi-million dollar world tour and left the band, the crew, the label, everyone hanging. They had to eat hundreds of thousands in merchandise to re-do them when he quit. The other guys lost out on a $3 million each bonus when he quit. He lied about his reasons for leaving.
He got to just walk away and apparently gets a great solo career with new management and a great label. The other guys had to clean up his mess while in the middle of a world tour and recording an album. Then he goes and says none of it was real to him in an interview and now shades them with #realmusic. What an ungrateful douche.
Sigh. I want to like him (because he’s super cute and seem(ed) genuinely quiet and introverted, but he has handled everything so badly. Fans are fast to forget that the only reason he left when he did was because he was caught cheating on his fiance. He would still be there if not for that. IHe was all set to go fo the new tour, even tweeting about how good it felt to be back on stage after their christmas break…. then he just dumps his bandmates in the middle of a world tour, like he couldn’t even finish the Asian leg which was 2 or 3 more shows and then they had a month off. He could have allowed them to get used to the idea in that month and then inform the fans that he decided to leave to go solo (which is clearly what he wanted – not to be a ‘normal’ 22 year old).. Instead they had to go out and out on a show when they had a sh*tstorm in the tabloids and a fandom in mourning.
Then the nonsense with NaughtyBoy – allowed him to diss Louis’ voice (supposedly his best mate???) then he tells Louis to gtfo of his business even though louis said nothing to him, he had his own beef with NB over the goading of the fans.
It’s just his whole demeanor. He coasted along for the past 2 years, barely talking in interviews, pulling sickies and then he pays back his ‘friends’ by going awol.
I just hope he learns to anunciate words because his solo stuff so far is just mumbling.

Seriously I don’t think they would have kept Zayn anyway…in the “This is Us” video the guys were talking THEN about that time they were thinking of letting him go.
I was never a big 1D fan, but my sister asked me to go to a concert with her last year, so I’ve been semi-following them for a bit. I don’t think Zayn handled his exit well, but, he endured a lot of shit the other guys didn’t (tons of racist and Islamophobic comments were thrown his way). Also, their management was/is terrible. I remember seeing an article about the Sony leaks, and some 1D stuff was in there. Management purposefully crafted an image of him being the bad boy and mysterious one. They even asked him to change the spelling of his name to make it look more cool. I hate that I know this much, but in earlier videos (from ’12/’13) he’s very spunky, funny, and has tons of personality. But something changed in ’14, and he definitely became more withdrawn and quiet. He shouldn’t have bailed in the middle of the tour, but I think something must have happened behind the scenes, and he reached his breaking point. After he left, I read in an article he was on medication for depression and anxiety. Also, while the Louis comment was uncalled for, I’m pretty sure they moved past it. Liam said he’s spoken to Zayn recently, and they’re on good terms. I think the hashtag was more about Zayn finally being able to write/record music he loves and being in control of his career, rather than being micromanaged all the time. Just look at some of his retweets after that tweet he made.
It’s also rumored he has some drug issues, right? Maybe that’s why his behaviour changed last year?
I remember watching an acoustic version of Steal My Girl, I believe, and he looked off.
I watched that with my daughter (that’s my story and I am sticking to it), he looked so strung out in that video, like he had not slept for a few days. The red circles around his eyes.
Yeah, the racist tweets are horrible, but all the boys have had their fair share of hassle online. Louis and Harry have had an entire narrative where they are in a relationship and have beards and their every move is made into something it isn’t. Louis especially has had to take a lot of sh*t about his serious gf being for PR and it obviously has bothered him a lot. His friendship with Harry seems to be non-existent now. Harry has had crazy stuff said about him. Liam has been called fat, had the whole duck dynasty controversy.
i don’t think he and Louis are speaking. If they were they would rub it in NB’s face. And tbh, i wouldn’t talk to Zayn if i was Louis. What he did was really low because he knows Louis is insecure about his voice. It might not have been his tweet but he was sitting beside NB when it was sent. He basically okayed it. To think otherwise is fans just being in denial that Zayn could be so horrible.
Well I don’t know about Zayn being next to NB, but Zayn didn’t take a dig at Louis’ voice. He told Louis to stop making comments about his life, or something along those lines. Also, Zayn has since stopped working with NB. Maybe he realized NB was using him, and stirring up too much shit, so he decided to cut ties. It seems like the boys in 1D were more like family, not just bandmates. Sometimes family doesn’t get along. That doesn’t mean behind the scenes, Zayn didn’t apologize to Louis for the tweet, and isn’t trying to fix their friendship. Anyways, who know what really happened. I’m already ashamed talking about this on a gossip site haha. I’ll just wish the best for all the members and leave it at that.
I just cannot criticize him. If you have watched the interview with Morgan Spurlock, director of ID movie, “This Is Us”, then you heard him speak about how Zayn always struggled with being away from home and family. He went on to say that Zayn was his favorite member of the band.
I don’t know if he had a drug problem but I suspect that he did. I also suspect that he suffers from anxiety and depression from some of the interviews and articles I’ve read.
As for throwing shade at ID – I don’t think he meant that at all.
I know he’s made some questionable decisions but I still think he is a good and decent person.
I think one of the reasons I find it difficult to hate him, other than his good looks (childish, Iknow), it’s because we are around the same age, and I’m also uber shy and diagnosed with depression and social anxiety. So I understand how he can make stupid and terrible decisions as a reaction to feel safer in the moment. He needs a better team.
He needs a modelling contract as well. This dude is a great singer (they always kept him in the back in ID)…he is also exceptionally good looking !

Maybe i’m warped today but I don’t take Zayns tweet at shade at his band but at the position of being in a regimented group holds you to. Its not directed at bandmates but the group work as a whole.
Every boyband sings catchy pop songs. And they are all popular because members are pretty. And every one from the singers who sing lead parts (usually 2-3 members are leading) thinks that he is so talented and dreams to leave group and sing r n b and become solo star.
Only to realize that no one cares about him when he is not in boyband. And his songs dont chart and no one cares.
Zayn has a great voice but he really has a problem with enunciating his words. People think Ariana Grande sounds bad–Zayn is so much worse.
So Stupid. Nick Carter from BSB could not make it solo. And he has recognizable voice, talent and had prettiness back when he attempted to go solo. None of the members of Five, Blue boybands could make it solo.
Ronan Keating from Boyzone has like 2-3 big hits and then got lost. And he has talent and very good voice.
Gary Barlow, the one guy from Take That who was lead singer – did not make it solo. People were not interested.
Blond guy Brian from Westlife got forgotten week after he left group.
JC from NSYNC tried but no one was interested. And NSYNC was huge and he was lead singer along with Justin.
Only Robbie Williams and Justin Timberlake truly made it. And they had talent ant IT factor. This Zayn guy has nothing. Not a good singer, ordinary voice., not much personality. He will be very surprised when he will release single, album and no one will care. Maybe 1 ot 2 singles will even chart and will be played for a little. But then it will go away. And only few of his One Direction 13-16 years old fans will show up for his concerts in some clubs. Because its no like he will get 20 0000 arenas for his solo concerts.
