All hail the new full-length ‘Macbeth’ trailer: all hail Michael Fassbender?

The new, full-length trailer for Macbeth was released yesterday, as part of official start of the awards-bait season. We saw the teaser trailer for Macbeth back in June and I liked it. I doubt this film will come to my town, but even if it did… I’m not sure I would want to see it in theaters. It would be more of a rental for me. Still, it looks very good. Here’s the trailer:

I saw some sites making Game of Thrones references, which I think is fair. If you watch GoT, you can see how that landmark show has changed and influenced a lot in film, television and pop culture. There is imagery here that seems very Game of Thrones, or maybe it’s that Game of Thrones is Shakespearean in its imagery and this Shakespeare adaptation is simply reclaiming it. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Meanwhile, I just saw some Irish outlets saying that Fassy just started filming on Assassin’s Creed. There’s also a new rumor that Fassy has been cast as chef Marco Pierre White:

He’s played the murdering thane Macbeth, the mutant villain Magneto and a sadistic slave owner and now Michael Fassbender is set to portray the enfant terrible of British cooking, Marco Pierre White. The Irish actor is getting set to immortalise the Leeds-born chef in a film directed by Ridley Scott based on his best-selling autobiography The Devil In The Kitchen, according to the cooking personality. The film will chronicle White’s life from his humble beginnings on a council estate through to his successes as the youngest chef ever to win two Michelin stars, and the first British chef to be awarded three.

In a recent interview conducted on Irish chat show, The Seven O’Clock Show, White gave an update on the film’s progress. He said: ‘Ridley Scott has agreed with him [Fassbender] that he has first option once the script is finished… The script starts on the first of September and will be finished by the end of the year.’

[From The Daily Mail]

There are some actors who, I feel, get stuck doing too many bio-pics. Fassbender might be one of them, even though he’s only played a handful of real people in his career (Bobby Sands, Steve Jobs, Carl Jung, and his 12 Years character was a real person too). Maybe the problem is that Fassy does real people very well? Anyway, Fassy and food? That might be interesting.

I saw this last night, and all I can say is I can’t wait! I actually think him and Marion are a very interesting on-screen couple. Plus I’ll watch anything with Fassy in it, especially 300 – does anyone remember him in that?

    • Ravensdaughter says:

Put me first in the ticket line! I didn’t see “300” because it was too violent-this looks no less violent, but what the heck.

    • Betti says:

300 and all those half naked men *swoon* Lena Headey was one lucky lady.

    • EN says:

There was Fassy in there? I tried watching it. Couldn’t get past the first 10 min. It was so boring.

  2. ds says:

I’d watch it on big screen: mostly because I think photography looks really good and I’d regret any other decision. Plus I can’t wait to see it; seems like it should have been out ages ago. I know I might sound as a hater, but I really can’t give GOT any artistic value. To me, it’s just a soap opera…nothing else. I know I’m a minority, but I don’t think it’s changing television production. Helping it develop while using all the technology, sure, but I don’t think it’s groundbreaking; just entertainment. So I feel sorry that this is being compared to it, though I’d have to see it first to do a fair comparison, ’cause one thing GOT really does have, are some pretty good actors.

    • EN says:

I can’t stand GoT , it is demeaning to all of the humanity. You are not alone )).
The GoT claim that the Middle Ages were like that did not convince me. It was a more violent and prejudiced time but they had their own code of honor. Violence for the sake of violence doesn’t make sense now and it didn’t make sense then.
We actually read the historical manuscripts from 12-15th centuries (recorded by monks) in history classes. Those people knew what was pointless violence and what was right and what was wrong.

  3. InvaderTak says:

His facial expressions look lazy or bored to me. I can’t really describe it, but he doesn’t look good here.

    • Saks says:

Agree. I was so looking foward to it, but although the photography looks amazing, I’m failing to feel the “raw” emotions he is supposed to be portraying.

  4. Tiffany27 says:

This looks so fu*king good! I can’t wait!

  5. FingerBinger says:

    That was underwhelming.

    • meme says:

Extremely underwhelming. I don’t see this being big at the BO.

      • Mia4S says:

It won’t be big at the box office but it was never expected to be. That has more to do with movie audiences being pretty dumb than anything else. 🙂

      • Maria A. says:

Art House flicks seldom are big box office. You could probably list them on the fingers of one hand: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is one.

  6. EN says:

I am hoping the movie is better than the trailer. The visuals are great. But neither Marion or Fassy are believable or “visceral” like the trailer claims. Meh! Expected better.

  7. Mia4S says:

    So, so awesome.

Honestly I would be so happy to be an actor under 30 right now….because over 30 the competition is bonkers. Fassbender, DiCaprio, Hardy, Bale.

    Damn.

  8. vauvert says:

Cinematography is amazing. Marion looks great, and I can say, for the first time, that I understand the fuss over Fassy:-) But in the trailer his performance didn’t seem impressive, although I will watch this anyway, if just for the beautiful scenery and costumes. I totally get the GoT comparisons and I can see it in some of the shots too. (Speaking of GoT, can’t wait until next year. And hope GRRM hurries up already with the book!!)

  9. Anon says:

Nope, very disappointed in Lady Macbeth. She comes off like a delicate flower when the character cries out for some heavy duty mojo. Both in voice and physical appearance. This is a woman who would strangle a puppy and all I got from those clips was a petite model vibe. Ugh. What a bummer.

I will try to push her out of my mind because I love the play and I love Fassy and am fascinated to see what he brings to the role.

  10. bored says:

the only thing to unbore me.

  11. Paul Ó Duḃṫaiġ says:

There’s always the Japanese “Throne of Blood” (1957) adaptation for those who want a slightly different take on Macbeth. Technically speaking Macbeth was a real person as well, though obviously Shakespeare’s hatchet job on him is fictional.

  12. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I think MacBeth looks great! I don’t think they’re showing Cotillard’s devious scenes in the trailer. I will be expecting to see those in the movie. Fassbender’s expressions look anything but lazy to me. MacBeth is wracked with guilt and losing his damn mind, and I see that in these scenes. The story is a great one, but very violent. I can see a lil GoT here, but actually Gladiator sprang to my mind! lol
